[Q] Windows 8 and Skydrive - Windows 8 General

I am running Windows 8 Consumer Preview. It's great. But I'm not sure how it integrates within Windows Skydrive? Does it? Can I use Windows 8 to sync files across my desktop and laptop (both run Win8CP)?

bobbyelliott, to use Windows Skydrive, you have to associate your previous signed Microsoft Account (Hotmail) to the service, so when you login in a computer with W8, the SkyDrive will load your files that you synced. So first all you have to do is sign in SkyDrive with you Hotmail account and then use this in your personal computer so when you starts SkyDrive, you can just upload files.

Whats really cool, is if you have a Live account (to be called a Microsoft account in future) is great if you own more than 1 PC or WP7 phone.
So I have a WP7 phone. PC at work (of course) and at Home (have a Mac too but I digress)
When I logged into W8 at home, all my calendars, mail, people, social and DOCUMENTS from Skydrive sync'd to my PC.
I setup W8, background, lock screen etc. Set some links on the Start GUI.
When I installed at work, entered my Windows AD account, and linked my Live account, not only did I get my work stuff, but also all my photos and all the customisation I had made at home! Most of my docs are on Skydrive or SharePoint so I can now work where I want, and it all looks the same.
I've also tried playing Starcraft II under W8, and it worked flawlessly.
For a preview, that is amazing. Its slicker and quicker than W7.
Good luck with your new toy. Try it everywhere

Woooh! Slow down there! I do sign in with my Hotmail ID and password with Windows 8 at home and on my laptop. Then what? I don't see any sync'ing taking place. How do I use this functionality? Is there a folder that syncs or something?

bobbyelliott, like hwangeruk said in his post, once you signed in your first computer with your Hotmail ID, all customizations, calendars, mail, people, social, documents, photos that u made on it will be saved and once you login with the same id on your laptop, all this stuff will automatically loads... off course files with a higher size you´ll have to save offlive to your local computer, but most of then will be synced.

some of my applications (including SkyDrive) are in German, how to change language in applications Metro UI? The same thing I do with Messenger. I want to have in English of course.

Someone else probably already said this, but Skydrive is the cloud and the applications that use it can do so in various ways. For example, Windows Live Mesh allows seamless and automatic syncing of folders on your laptop to sync with all your computers.
Skydrive also allows you to collaboratively work on documents - and/or simply share files between all kinds of people. You can access those files with your tablet - incl your android tablet or phone.
Skydrive is a cloud which is growing in importance and seamlessly linking into various Windows world applications. For example, I've found Live Photo Gallery and skydrive to be a perfect match for storing, printing, sharing, editing and general mgmt of all media.
By far, the biggest point of Skydrive is the FREE 25 gig on a set of very fast servers.

Sync with Mac??

Hi,
Any Mac user here sync your Trinity with Mac OSX??
Kindly recommend some applications that sync your contacts and calender well with iCal and Address book in 10.4.9
Thanks in advance.
Mark
Take a look at Marks/Space as
The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile lets you easily connect and synchronize Pocket PCs and smartphones with your Mac. Sync with Address Book, iCal, Microsoft Entourage, iPhoto, iTunes and more. For work. For play. For life. It's really amazing what these devices can do for you when connected through The Missing Sync.
I found the program to be useful for dropping .CAB files to my PDA but I don't use that much anymore to intermittent issues and I prefer is to use an exchange server to sync my address-book, calendar, etc...
4smartphone offer this service and more for a fee (though you can have a two week trial). So I receive push email and I do all my editing of contacts etc which syncs with the server and my email app on the Mac (mail and entourage).
Hope this helps
missing sync F$%K up all my contacts birthdates...
missing sync
heya... just bought the missing sync... really cheap and quite cool... havent tested it deeply, but works quite well for me except i cant transfer files directly into the memory card, have to use the main storage temporarily. rest of stuff works quite well. i love the SMS archiver!
Yer SMS archive is a nice new feature......As to copying stuff direct to Storage card you should be able to perform this. Have you tried clicking on "Install" and then selecting the location from the pulldown menu?
Yer SMS archive is a nice new feature......As to copying stuff direct to Storage card you should be able to perform this. Have you tried clicking on "Install" and then selecting the location from the pulldown menu?
i kno it should work ;( but it seems kind of a conflict, as the memory card folder is seen erratically on the mounted directory: Either it is detected with no files on it, or with a partial list of files, or with "0 files, 2Terabytes free" ... as soon as I try to copy anything into the SD it says "the network drive has lost connection".... I've mailed MarkSpace about this... will post here the solution.
I know the missing sync for window mobile does sync your stuff, however, not correctly.
It messes up my whole contacts and calender with wrong mapping.
Omg, it took me a few good hours to fix up the mess.
Any other suggestions?

If youre not a radical mac user that would be offended by installing anything microsoft, Im using with success VMWARE with Windows XP on my MacBook Pro. I can then run Windows XP over MacOS, and ActiveSync (and many other apps) without problems.
I still dont have the guts to do a ROM Upgrade from it hahaa but i bet it works.
VMWARE FUSION is quite cheap ($60) and allows to install Windows XP, Windows Vista and Linux, and even run the three of them at the same time over MacOS. I do it.
i use parrallels desktop, vmware, along with missing sync also tried pocketmac...here are my finding......well when i plug my usb from trinity to usb port on mac pro 17" the computer crashes....ya no lie, cant find out why, also, this makes parralels not work for the phone as i have to select the usb port to use by that time comp has crashed.........vmware works better...pain to boot up though just cause i hate having windows running in the background.......missing sync is absolutely ****e..it sucks huge remapped my contacts and screwed everyhting up not to mention i got tons of foubles now as whne i sync with vmware it senses the changes and adds new contacts...arrrrggghhhhhhhh if only iphone had gps then and avoided these sync issues i would have gone to the dark side......as for pocketmac..dont make me laugh..that "lauren" is a fictitious person who just keeps harrassing me by email, yet never solving my problems...and i'm pretty sure that its their software that makes the usb crash my comp, thats why i always use bluetooth with missing sync which only works 1 out of 12 times..annoying as hell

I'd been using missing sync since early this year for my Trinity to sync with my MacBook Pro. MissingSync v3.3 with WM5 and MissingSync v4 with WM6. I din face much problem. It sync with the OSX Address Book and Microsoft Entourage Address Book plus my Trinity Contact perfectly. I notice it takes on the Microsoft Entourage Address Book format. Others like Calendar, SMS, Notes sync well between computer and device too.
They all suck. I used missing sync for a while but its buggy and clunky feeling and caused problems with my contacts. At one point it corrupted some of my data and just kept asking over and over how to resolve a conflict - I had to force quit it, and disable syncing of that database (calendar, I think).
pocketmac looks promising, because it integrates into iSync. But their website is ****e and I don't really know what I'm buying (should I get pocketmac Pro, or Pocketmac for Windows Mobile 5/6? They're the same?!)
I really wish their was an elegant, inexpensive solution for syncing address book, ical, etc.
p.s.
I have done many a flash ROM upgrade in parallels and vmware. Works just fine.
Oh - and I did just find this:

How to sync the Shift with Outlook on PC and sync files

The question is not how to sync SnapVue with Vista (because it is possible getting full WM), the question is another.
I think that all of us have a Pc or "big" laptop and the Shift, and in my case I have several emails account configured in Outlook (Desktop PC). Now, it will be useful if I could access the "same" Outlook on Vista side (Shift), but the only way is to configure Outlook on the same way that my Pc, leaving all the emails on the server, deleting theme when I check my email from my Desktop Pc. But doing so I do not have all my emails with me on my Shift. There is a way to sync Outlook on Shift with Outlook on my Desktop Pc without Exchange server? I do not have any access to any Exchange server, furthermore even if I had, I do not think it will be very fast to access all my 800mb of emails using outlook as a client of Exchange server, isn't it?!
How do you are working about this?
And what about files? Do you sync files or some folders from your Desktop Pc and Vista's Shift? If yes how? Some times ago Novell made iFolder (http://www.ifolder.com/index.php/Main_Page), an interesting client that syncs files and folders with a remote server on the web, and you can install many clients as you need on different machines, so when you create a new file or modify an old one, iFolder client send the differences to the server on Internet, and every time that the other Pcs goes on line it sync theme as well. The problem is that iFolder is not working and that project seems that has been left alone. Do you know if there is something similar?
Thanks
I'm currently using many ways to do the things you ask for.
I bought an exchange server space from an italian provider (don't know if I can post its name), and through that exchange I sync my contacts, calendars, to do's etc.
As far as files are concerned, I'm using at present Humyo, that gives you 1 Gb of free space for free, even if I use it in a 100 Gb - payed version. As I have a flat rate data plan with vodafone, I can easily have my files always under control. Of course I do the "big job" (heavy uploads etc) at home with an ordinary ADSL.
If you need a freeware solution and own a web space, you could try and install Relay, an open source project that does more or less the thins Humyo does. Of course the problem here could be web space. (HINT: I tried to "install" Relay on my Aruba server, but because of security reasons - I upload work files - I preferred to use Humyo).
Of course, if you need more infos, feel free to post on this thread
Ciao
ADDED: as far as 800 Mb of e-mail, you can always ask your Outlook to download headers (and not the whole message) and include or exclude attachments. And if you really need you 800 Mb always with you, you can always do the first sync from an ADSL...

I see--- but what about considering your web space as your HDD? I mean: you don't have to take all files with you and then sync them each day... You simply open the file from your space and work from there. That's the way I'm working with Humyo, and that's the best use for my Voda+Shift device.
Anyway I don't think it would be so difficult to find some script (or even "Sync folder" in Windows) to do the things you want.

Sync files is usefull because I do not have a flat internet connection, so in this way I can access all file on the hard drive and sometimes sync with my Desktop.
Sync folder in Windows works only when I am on the same network, but not when I have outside with my shift.
Finally, FolderShare is ok, but I have to leave my Desktop alway on! This is why I am looking about something like ifolder or Live Mesh.
Concernig exchange...I thinnk mail2web is the only provider that provide free Exchange access only from PocketPC, I cannot find any provider that let use their Exchange Server for free like mail2web but allowing connection from Outlook...so...no email and no automatic file sync for now. Anyway thanks for your help
I know I'm late, but you could be interested with Syncing.Net.
It's working via the net, and you've not to have the computers on at the same time.
The "bad" thing is you need an internet connection to synchronize, even if it will not use it.

See FAQ :
Does SYNCING.NET also work with Windows Mobile devices?
Not yet! A Windows Mobile Edition is planned for the future, but I can’t say when it’s available. At the moment SYNCING.NET synchronize only outlook data stored in a local pst file at a Desktop or Laptop PC.

That's why I prefer to use a (not so cheap but very stable) exchange account for my outlook-related stuff and a humyo account for files (they are both OS independent...). I recently met a nice virus in one of my desktop and had to low-level format all HDD. I didn't lose a single bit of my data (mail, calendar, tasks, docs etc): I just had to sign in again to my exchange provider and to humyo and everything was still there. As I told a few posts ago in this thread, I forgot what an HDD is (internal or external): I usually travel with a portable HDD, but I could even burn it and I would still be sure not to lose anything.
The point, IMHO, is: how valuable are the data you need to store? The more valuable they are, the more you are willing to pay for their security. If I lost my HDD and my contacts the damage would be much more chan a couple of 100 Euros to buy another HDD...
Well, I had to format my DD only 1 time in 18 years of computing, and it was because of the DD itself (because it became very slow in writing, due to hardware failure). I had the time to save my datas before that, so no damage. My antivirus and antispywares were always capable of getting rid of attacks.
Since August, we had an Exchange Server, so Outlook sync wasn't a problem, but now we haven't any server, so we're searching for alternatives. I tried some, and for me they have to be Internet-free (or almost !) because I don't always have access to a connection.
Syncing.net seems to be a good (if not perfect !) answer to my problematic.

My situation is exactly the opposite, and that's why I bought the Shift: I need to be "always-on" and I accordingl prefer a "totally online" solution. "De gustibus non disputandum est".

Sync Documents / Tasks...

I'm strongly leaning towards Android and the Hero specifically to replace my WM phone. I rely heavily on syncing contacts, calendar, tasks and documents. Active Sync works fine on WM, however I've pretty much sorted that by switching to google mail, I can sync my contacts and calendar. I've read tons of posts on this, but can't seem to find specifically about documents.
For example, if I modify an Excel file on my PC, it then syncs with my WM phone, and I always have an updated document on phone & pc.
Is this possible with the Hero?
Also, what about task syncing? I understand that google tasks don't sync, is there another way?
As far as I can tell there is nothing avaliable that is anything like the Windows Mobile Office Suite.
However.
I installed "GDocs" from the market place which gives me access to all of my Google documents. You can View Excel type files but you can edit Word type files. You can even create Word type documents straight from your phone.
I've been using it on & off since I got the phone & the app is pretty solid
Thanks, I guess I'll try out Google docs. I definitely like the idea of cloud based rather than Active Sync from PC to phone to laptop. Active Sync has been very flakey lately, losing connection, I've lost data a bunch of times and I'm just sick of WM and AS.

How many people have linked their phone to live?

I've only owned this phone 10 days now and I've always had a live account to sync my contacts from previous winmo phones. Few days ago I went to check my live account and low and behold the phone get intergrated to you live account. You go into your live account and hover over Windows Live then a drop down box will show up. You select devices and then a page pops up with your phone there. You click on Find your phone.. then the wow starts.. You can map where your phone's current location is with Map it. Ring it to ring your phone so you can track it down. Lock it so no one can use the phone... Then Erase it if there's no way in hell your getting it back. Pretty cool functions to have for a just in case. Nobody at the ATT store knew anything about it. Oh you also get a 25Gb Skydrive. You need to download Windows Live Essentials 2011 to access the Skydrive from your computer.
I am guessing pretty much everyone has it linked. It is one of the first steps in the wizard.
Hmm I guess but the 3 ATT employees I talked to didn't. shrug and didn't even know about those features.
I am an avid player of the Xbox 360 so of course I connected my account info to the phone. The best part is having my entire contact list backed up online and being able to map the location of the phone for free.
I'm syncing my contacts to Google Contacts, but otherwise it's the same.
I do have to say, though, I'm very disappointed in the lack of Skydrive integration overall. For example, your Office docs can't be saved straight to skydrive, and the only way to get OneNote docs from skydrive is through th web browser. Once they're on your phone you can update them and they sync, but the method is pretty much weak. Skydrive should be fully integrated so that ALL documents you create, including folders, sync 1:1 to your skydrive account.
In fairness, Skydrive *itself* is still fragmented. For example, docs you sync with WLE 2011 (using Mesh) can't be edited directly in the browser and are located in a separate location from your main skydrive account and files. That's also lame.
Skydrive needs to become a SINGLE, unified storage area, where documents can be saved to/from PC, WP7 or from the browser, and all editable in the browser, on the PC, or on the phone.
I'm sure we'll get there, but it's frustrating that they didn't have it ready by launch.

Hi,
I have used the MyPhone Explorer, but then again, there are restrictions in this too.
It does not sync "WORK 2", HOME 2, Company, etc numbers at all.
it only takes 1xmobile, 1xwork, 1xhome number.
for my work, i have a huge contact list with multiple work and mobile nos.
nice find. thanks for the tip!
Companionlink has worked for me, including multiple addresses and phone numbers as well!
