[How To]Change Your PRL!! Faster Data! (video tutorial) - Nexus S General

EDIT: Read the second post for more info/alternate hybrid PRL/how to revert back to stock! I know it's a read but it should answer any questions you have!
This is a video tutorial I threw together on how to change your PRL. There has been some confusion as to how to change the PRL/some people having trouble doing it. I hope this helps!
WARNING!! Use this at your own risk! People have had their accounts terminated by using too much roaming data.
That being said, I've used this have for a few months now, and I haven't had any trouble, but others have.
This hack loads a new PRL onto your phone. It tells your phone to use roaming data instead of Sprint. Normally you only roam on 1x, but this makes you roam on Verizon's 3g all the time. In my area it is over 10x as fast as sprint. In my house (with 2 bars) I get 1.3 mb/s average download, and when I have any more bars I get well over 2 mb/s consistently. This is compared to dial-up like speeds on Sprint...
Let's get started, shall we?
---------------------------------------------
Links for the downloads are below!
Watch it through and follow the directions. This will work on most ROMs, One I know it will work on is Codename Android 1.4. Here are the directions in writing:
1. Get your MSL number. Do this by getting an app from the market called terminal emulator. type in:
su (hit enter)
getprop ril.MSL (caps sensitive, then hit enter)
your MSL will be there. It will be a 6 digit code. Write this down for later!
You can also call Sprint and if you ask nicely they may give it to you!
2. Install drivers for your device on your computer. Look up a Youtube tutorial on how to do this. It was the hardest part for me.
3. Download the file "00001.prl" and QPST. Links to both are below. On your computer, extract the QPST file, open it up, and double click on setup. Go through the installation process.
4. Go back to the phone and open up the dialer. Enter this: *#*#8778#*#*
5. On the menue that pops up there will be a secton labeled "USB". Change it from PDA to "Modem"
6. Back to the computer. Hit the start menu and open up device manager. Double click on "ports" and you should see your devide there. at the end it will look like this: (COM#). Write down the number at the end of the COM.
7. Hit the start and search for QPST and open it. At the bottom corner click on new device, and when it asks for the port enter COM# (using the number you found in the last step), and hit ok.
8. Now go to "start clients" and hit "SERVICE PROGRAMMING". It will ask what port you will be modifying, just click your device and hit ok.
9. there will be these tabs with CDMA, CDMA-2, ESN, etc. Click on the one that said "Roam". In the lower box hit browse, and find the 00001.prl file. hit ok.
10. Finally, hit "write to phone". The phone should reboot, and you're done!
11. I forgot to add this in the video. Once it boots up, go back to the dialer and enter the *#*#8778#*#* code again. Change it back from modem to PDA and you are done!

Here are the files:
00001.prl: http://www.box.com/s/esb2ot5z8avjymqspxec
QPST: http://www.x-drivers.com/catalog/flash/mobile_phones/companies/qualcomm/models/qpst/12051.html
Post your results! How are your speeds before and after? Use the speedtest.net app to test. And don't forget to hit the thanks button!

So due to the rumors circling, I decided to clear them up here.
Read this before posting!
These are the drivers I use with my Nexus s 4g:
http://nexusshacks.com/nexus-s-hacks/how-to-install-nexus-s-windows-usb-drivers/
The PRL I included in the first post will make your phone work on VERIZON! It shows up on your plan as roaming data. If you use the 00001 prl then you DO NOT have to make your phone force roam or anything of the sort. It just works on Verizon, and your phone will NOT show that it is roaming, yet it is. Got it?
When you flash a new ROM, the PRL isn't touched. So you don't have to redo this if you flash a new ROM. Also, if your ROM doesn't do anything with the dialer code, then make a nandroid of it, flash a new ROM (I know for a fact that CM9 V3 and codename android 1.4 work), do the hack, then restore your nandroid. It's a little round-about, but it works!
How to use BOTH networks:
======================================
Now you can use a hybrid PRL. These have you on Sprint and they allow you to use the Verizon 3g if you force roam. I used this on my EVO 4g, but I haven't had great luck with it on my Nexus s 4g. Others have. Try it out if you want, here is a hybrid PRL (11114):
http://www.box.com/s/yrml7pzfgjc1od8hbp2j
You apply it the same way as the 00001 PRL.
Once it is installed, you will still be on Sprint's network. If you want to make your phone work on Verizon, then you have to make your phone force roam. You can do that with this app: roamctrl.com
Now you can switch between using Sprint and Verizon 3g!
========================================
Reverting back to stock
If you want to go back to the stock PRL, you have 2 choices. Both of which are pretty easy.
The first would be to go an official Sprint ROM, go to settings>software upgrade>update PRL or settings>about phone>update PRL.
If you are on a ROM where you can't do that, then you can just put the stock PRL on your phone using the same method that you used to put a custom one on.
As of this post, this is the latest sprint PRL:
http://www.box.com/s/fc67ca1qfx7nymqnfozy
Download it and use QPST to put it on your phone. Easy as pie
Finally some info on Roaming on Sprint:
Now your plan includes "unlimited roaming data". Sprint, however, says in the fine print that if you go over 300mb you can get into trouble. I have used this hack for 4 months using 1-1.5 gb of data. Never had a problem. I only know one guy first hand who has ever gotten kicked off their plan from this. So know it is a possibility, but unlikely. And they send you a warning letter before they kick you off. If you get the letter just revert back to the stock one!
If there is anything else I should add here let me know!

Interesting. Will this give me over charges for roaming then?

Roaming is unlimited on Sprint's unlimited data plan. So nope!

So when they terminate your account do you still have to pay them or isthat it? This might be good for me. I might flash my ns4g to BoostMobile and I might try this.

Be very careful with that 00001 prl. There are others like 11115 etc that won't get you in any trouble.

I used to use that PRL on my EVO, but it isn't working on this phone. It was just using Sprint even when I force roamed.
I'll use the 00001. I've used it for 4 months and had 1-2 gigs of roaming data. No Trouble yet!

wont this cause Sprint to cancel me as I will be roaming on over 300mb?

I hope you never do(have trouble that is)! Did you use it (00001) on the Evo as well? If you did, did you notice any speed differences between that and 11115? And great video by the way! Especially for your first on youtube!

Someone confirm that this works?

Thanks! It is just my first video on this channel.
I did use the 00001.prl on the EVO. I ended up using the 11115 on my EVO as well. It worked ok on that phone, but I wasn't getting data as fast as the 00001. And I couldn't get the 11115 to work on my Nexus.

Warning!!! Do NOT do this hack constantly! I personally have a friends who did this on his Evo for about a month straight and Sprint sent him a letter and ended his contract with no fees. His service was terminated within 2 weeks of receiving the letter from Sprint.
Edit: yes, he had unlimited roaming on HIS plan as well. So there's little truth behind Sprint's claims.

There are whole threads on this over in the EVO 4g forum. OF the many who use this hack only 3 or so have had this happen. And they weren't the heaviest users. If you get the letter then just undo the hack and you're fine!

Sounds like a win win to me! Use Verizon speeds while I'm under contract and then IF Sprint terminates my contract I'm free and clear to take my NS4G to boost or go get the (Insert latest new device) as a new customer with no ETF's???!!! YES PLEASE
On a side note, would this have any effect of 4G? I ask because I live in a no 4G area on Sprints network but Verizon has 4G in my area. Just curious if it would give me 4G as well. I have no idea how 4G networks work as I haven't ever used it.

A lot of people use the hack to get out of the contract. They use crazy amounts of data to get noticed. Funny thing is, most of them haven't gotten "the letter" yet. It seems almost random.
And this wouldn't give you Verizon 4g. Totally different radios.

Use Verizon PRL on EPIC?

So I got my EPIC and freakin love it, such an awesome upgrade from my crappy hero. My question though is that I know on the hero you could type in ##PRL# and put in your MSL code and you could force the phone to use a verizon PRL. This is really handy because at my work i get HORRIBLE 3G reception and much better with verizon so i usually switched to a verizon PRL whenever i was at work. I noticed that the PRL code does not work on the EPIC though, anyway to do that hack?

I would like to know the code for this as well. Although I want it because the latest prl (60670) gives me 1x and I would like to downgrade (60664) to get 3g access again. Thanks to anyone that can help.
Any updates on this?
...bump...
yea same here, i tried the ##775# from the evo guide and it's obviously not working, and neither was the ##778#, so if anyone finds a code that works, please let us know.
I am sure this is possible, the question is when will it be done? Hopefully sooner than later.
Still waiting, I'm an xray tech and work in a hospital so that means lead walls Sprint service SUCKS pretty much everywhere in the hospital, however there is a verizon tower on the hospital so all my coworkers who have verizon get 3g literally everywhere, and when i had my hero it was soooo nice being able to switch PRL's and also have service, now with the epic i'm hurting BAD.
bump bummp
Perhaps this is gonna sound dumb, but I don't think you're looking to install the Verizon PRL, which contains the preferred roaming for Verizon users (ie, Verizon users don't roam on Verizon), but are simply looking to force roaming onto Verizon?
There's Roam Control in the market which forces roaming. Using it now. Seems to work.
he means is theres a prl you can load to exclusively use verizon but it is roaming however you get full 3g speeds not just 1x with normal roaming
So roaming, even though it says 3g, is not as fast as it can be? Interesting.
normal prls and roaming actual roaming (showing the triangle) is limited to 1x speeds do not know why it still says 3g while using the hacked prl like 00001 will give u verizon towers and signal and 3g speeds with no triangle so to the phone you are not roaming (set it to sprint only and youll see) i use to do this with the hero but sprint caught on and starting showing data roaming
I use this hack on my evo constantly. My wife just got epic and after much research, using qpst or similar program is the current alternative. There's no native program (like epst) that interfaces with the dialer on the epic, hence no ##775#. You need the msl and put the phone into modem mode ##8778# for qpst to recognize programming.

Can you go into a little bit more detail about using the MSL and ##8778#? Also, is this a permanent solution?
Get a copy of qpst programming software. I'm pretty sure its considered warez here so i can't distribute it. A Google search will get to it.
I think the more appropriate term would be persistent, rather than permanent. It can be changed, just go to update prl on the handset's android menu. Also don't use verizon prl's use alltel. You can get evdo service wo roaming in most cases.

thats ur msl
A_flying_fox, that's a menu u can get into by using an msl which you can get from sprint and be able to access a menu where too can load different prl files into the phone to use other carriers towers if you have issues with your connection in different spots.
Also thinking out loud, would we be able to manually place the desired prl file where the current sprint prl is on the epic and just swap it out manually through root explorer or some other program.. Can anyone test this?

3g cap exist?

Im thinking of getting 3g. Is there a 10gb cap? How fast is tmo edge? Ty. I want to tether
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
By 10 Gb cap are you talking about T-Mobile bottlenecking your phone's bandwidth after hitting 10 Gb of usage in a month? Yes, from what I've read that exists, but I've never ran into it and I think it's lower than that (around 2 Gb). T-Mobile Edge sucks, but if your in an area with HSPA+ (they're version of 4G) you should be alright. I think I get around 2 Mbps down/800 Kbps up.
Its actually a 5gb cap for t-mobile as of mid-October. It was 10gb but most people don't know about either of these numbers because the plans were sold explicitly as "unlimited", and technically they are because they don't actually cut you off and charge per mb after the 5gb cap like Att. They just "throttle" your speeds for the rest of the billing period from 3g (2mb) to edge (56k), which can be found in small print at the end of the terms of service booklet that comes with the phone (after you pay for it- cs reps DO NOT disclose this while selling you an "unlimited" plan).
You will know if you're throttled if you get a text from T-mo saying you've exceeded the cap, which has happened to me for the last 2 months. Luckily, the techs at T-Mobile are retarded and you can get around this by either replacing the throttle files in your rom.zip or by using an alternate apn. Search for "how to defeat data throttling" on xda and there's a complete guide on how to do both of these in the thread. I have heard that 4g phones wont get capped though, so you might want to look into that before buying a 3g. Speeds on 3g are decent though and I use both pdanet and wireless tethering to connect to my laptop on a daily basis. USB is faster, but I average around 1.7mb download and 1.2 up. Your location and distance from cell towers will be the biggest determining factor on speed.

Thank you for your time mike. And for the long descriptive info. May I ask what keyboard you use. I must say, i admire your flawless spelling.

I live approx 8miles from the nearest hspa tower. In los angeles all the city near the real downtown have fast 3g rate.. whqt do you think the most u can use before tmo slows u? I am a heavy user, about 18gig a month. Btw if u are 5gig capped, and say u used 4.5gig and switch apn, it reset to 0?
btw 4g as in the g2 and mytouch.4g?
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
T-Mobile's 4G. Dunno about the G2, but yes to the myTouch 4G.
Haha thanks its just the keyboard that came with the latest cyanogen nightly, but it is slightly different than the keyboard from 6.1 rc1 and seems to be more responsive. I don't think it matters if you switch the apn before or after 5gb because they don't throttle the internet2 apn for some reason. I go over 15gb/month too because of tethering so i just use the alternate internet2 apn while throttled and switch back to epc.tmobile when the new billing cycle starts. Deleting the 7 throttle files is a more permanent fix but I hate dealing with adb and fastboot. And ya I meant the new mytouch and I'm pretty sure the g2 which are t-mobile's only "4g" phones atm. I really want to switch from my mytouch 3g to a 4g phone too but when i got this phone it was one of two t-mo androids at the time (ironically the g1 and mytouch 3g) and a month later they came out with like 10 more so I'm gonna wait for my upgrade cuz I know they're gonna pull the same BS with 4g after they get all the ppl with money burning a hole in their pockets to spring for the new mytouch and g2. If you're getting a new plan tho I would take a close look at their specs compared to the nexus s, I'll bet they don't come close. I live in central Cali btw, how do you check where the nearest tower is? Speedtest.net runs off a Modesto tower which is 45 mins away, I'm hoping my 3g tower is closer than that.

BTW, I added the hypertext for the guide that I'm assuming that you are referring to.
I was thinking of changing. My stupid verizon, in my area is charging me DOUBLE. I pay 40$ for verizon (internet+phone home) but they are charging me an EXTRA 20$. Which is BULL. So, im at a Pay or QUIT, and I QUIT.Screw that if your going to charge me 40 bucks, i might as well get 3G/4G. I will try to verify, let me reactivate my data plan..I will post back. Thanks for posting the link, I know that the alternate apn works and there are a few dozen ppl that have tested and confirmed that the other process works, with the only common issue being force closes on the networks setting menu. I have gone through the first steps of finding the 7 throttle files in the rom zip and changing them through adb using smali and the concept makes sense, but you have to delete these files for each rom install and Im currently testing the stability of the latest cm nightly build compared to 6.1 rc1 so I didn't want to finish until I decided on a rom. I believe there are a few ppl on that thread that have been compiling update.zip files that can be applied to any rom using recovery, but I tried one and got a bootloop so had to use nandroid. No throttle definitely makes 3g more bearable but to answer the question in the op, edge and 3g speeds suck compared to 4g and if you like the g2 or mytouch 4g I would buy one cuz there's no point getting stuck paying the same price for slower speeds for the next two years. The only thing holding me back is my contract, and $200 is looking more worth it every time I see 3g vs 4g speedtest posts.

So if the throttle files make sense then so should this? Very simple actually:
Make a nandroid backup at the beginning of the billing period.
Use up your 5gb limit.
Restore your nandroid backup and see if you are still being throttled.
If so... doesn't work. If not... then there might be something to it.
Uh binary. Was Xda taken out of tapatalk for a few days? Couldnt access on phone. But curous what is a nandroid? I see it in my clockwork. But. Never did one. Explain to a Noob xD

I dunno about tapatalk. I haven't heard anything about it. However there is a member that has been posting his QUESTIONS in the Development section almost on a daily basis that I have to keep moving and at the bottom of all of his posts have the typical "Sent from..." on it. So maybe it was just yours?
Nandroid = Clockwork backup:
A complete backup of essential data and rom components.
It consists of the following:
[*]BOOT.IMG
[*]CACHE.IMG
[*]DATA.IMG
[*]SYSTEM.IMG
[*]RECOVERY.IMG
[*]SD-EXT.IMG
[*].ANDROID_SECURE.IMG
[*]MISC.IMG
These files can be restored by using the same tool to produce the backup. (ie Clockwork backups are restored by Clockwork Recovery, Nandroid.sh script can be restored by the nandroid.sh script recovery commands.)
There all pretty much the same. Nandroid and BART scripts aren't commonly used since Clockwork came around but all pretty much do the same thing. Since Clockwork is constantly updated it is the most recommended method of producing a backup of your phones current state.
Also worth noting that with some these backups they can also be restored by fastboot. Fastboot flash userdata data.img, Fastboot flash system system.img, Fastboot flash boot boot.img, Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img, Fastboot flash cache cache.img. Not certain about the SD-ext.img and .andoid_secure.img though.
So in my previously mentioned suggestion if the throttle files are the only cause of being throttled after exceeding the 5gb limit then the fix is simple. Restore the system.img which contains the framework's services.jar file. But I'm very skeptical that this would even work because I'm pretty skeptical that the method in the guide is effective. Hell... to make it even easier what's to stop you from exceeding your 5gb limit and simply putting your sim in another phone and using the data from that device? I think T-Mobile is smarter than that... aren't they? Using a different APN perhaps... but not editing the serivce.jar file. That's just my theory anyway.
If you want my opinion, I think that the provider (T-Mobile) throttles it on their end... not by ours. Broadband providers (Comcast, AT&T Broadband, Roadrunner, etc) don't throttle your bandwidth by replacing the drivers on your computers network card. It's all on their end.
I have a hypothesis, built on what binaey said.. I think that every sim card has a unique tracking code. So on 3g. When you request data, it will use your unique id. They save the info on their logs, and disable you when u hit 5gigs. Nevertheless, i will still try.
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
Oh and the switching apn ideas seems pretty concrete.

If you want my opinion, I think that the provider (T-Mobile) throttles it on their end... not by ours. Broadband providers (Comcast, AT&T Broadband, Roadrunner, etc) don't throttle your bandwidth by replacing the drivers on your computers network card. It's all on their end.

You're right, the throttle files are activated OTA by t-mobile once you reach the cap. These files are built into the rom and, once activated, constantly bottleneck data speeds from your registered account, meaning that switching phones or loading a backup from the beginning of the month wont work because the data usage is stored on t-mo servers and your rom will still contain the files they need to automatically throttle you. The key to all of this is cost effectiveness through automation. You would think the techs at T-Mobile would be aware of the fact that simply deleting the files and replacing them to essentially trick the phone is possible, and I'm sure they are. The problem is that it would be a lot more expensive to pay employees to manually update individual users accounts and maintain them for the entire throttle cycle. T-mobile's system is undoubtedly flawed, but (beside the fact that only MAYBE a few hundred thousand ppl of their millions of customers know about it, and theyre making up for it from the ppl who manually updated and are actually paying $15 to tether) it has already been worked into all their phones and would require either new infrastructure and manpower to fix, or the cancellation of developer's data plans altogether for violating TOS. The mod has been thoroughly tested with all positive results though, and the entire time we've been discussing this I have been "throttled" at 2.0mb lol. I didn't bother with the mod because the internet2 apn has been working great. Incidentally, after the throttle was deactivated mid-morning yesterday my speeds jumped from ~2.0 to 3.2 consistently for 6 tests under internet2 apn, and ~2.5 top on epc.tmobile apn. Along with the fact that a t-mo rep on their forums said that all employees use internet2 and that is also what cs reccommends to customers with bad service before they cancel their contracts, I am starting to come to the conclusion that the alternate apn is a solution to several issues including throttle and overall connection speed.
And by the way JP, nandroid is one of the most important things you can do when modding your device. It essentially creates a backup of the current state of your device so that if you ever get stuck in a boot-loop or black screen, you can boot to recovery and reinstall the backup. It only takes 5mins to make through recovery or rom manager, and is very valuable to have just in case (saved me from a bricked device 2 weeks ago...after staying up all night trying to figure out what buttons to push to boot to recovery without the internet
EDIT: tested both apns again using speedtest.net app and went from 2100kbps consistently on epc.tmobile to 1650kbps avg on internet2 so I could be wrong about the speed improvement. Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
Update: Alternate apn fix no longer works as of this month. Have fun answering the phone tmobile cuz ppl r really going to complain now.

Sprint 4G works on an Evo flashed to Metro?

A close friend of mine got an Evo to put on Metro recently, and after he got the MetroFlash done to it, I went ahead and got the web, gps and MMS features working on it by flashing the MetroDroid rom over it. Once I got it done and confirmed working, another friend of mine and his sister who also have Evo's on Metro wanted me to do this to their phones, as well. I did so, but during the process, I realized that her phone was connected to and running on Sprint's 4G network. One of my cousins also has an Evo on Metro and I just confirmed with him that his 4G takes him to the Sprint one-day pass for $9.99 page just like the other Metro Evos do. I've dealt with 5 different Evo's that are on Metro, and this is the only one that has 4G working on it.
I did a ##3282# to compare the Wimax settings of her phone to the others, but there were no differences that stood out to me.
Does anyone know if there are any version of QPST or CDMA workshop out there that have the capability of reading/writing the WiMax parameters of these phones? I am sure there are setting that can be adjusted using a dedicated program that aren't available using EPST (##3282#), but I would need some help getting this done.
Does anyone have any ideas? Or is there already a fix out there for Evo users on Metro to be able to use 4G that I did not find when I searched? If not, I'd love to get this out to the community. I'm sure this would also work for people who have their Evos on Cricket, too.
The wimax for Sprint is provided by a separate company, i think its called "clear wire". Anyway they provide wimax to lots of places. You get a contract with them and use the EVO to pick up the signal. You don't need Sprint.....

Thanks for your insight, but I am aware of the fact that Sprint's 4G signal comes from Clear and that you can get a contract with Clear if you were inclined to do so. However, that is not the case here. This phone is fully flashed to Metro and still says "Connected to Sprint" when you turn on 4G and works at 4G speeds. She does not have a contract with Clear, yet it works. Somehow, the way her phone is set up, it runs on Metro's network with 4G off and Sprint's 4G network when the antenna is on.

No, it is always connected to Metro, the only thing that runs on sprint is the 4G, the $10 pass is also technically from sprint, this is because the wimax mac address is assigned to sprint. This will happen on any Evo, as long as you don't corrupt the RSA Keys. No you don't need QPST/QXDM to rewrite the MAC Address, it can be done thru adb, but with the evo it has an additional level of security of the RSA Keys, so it wouldn't help.

I understand that it always runs on Metro and that the 4G is on Sprint. I meant that it switches back to Metro's coverage if there is no WiMax signal or if you turn off the 4G antenna. I also know about the RSA keys and about MAC addresses. However, I do have access to a phone flashed to Metro and it connects to Sprint's/Clear's 4G all the time. If one phone can do it, then any phone can do it; which is the entire point of this thread. What I need help with is figuring out why that one phone does connect AND run on 4G.
Again: I have no use for this personally, as I am on Sprint. I only want to know how it works so I can share it with everyone.
That sounds like an error on sprints side of things. Like that device is unknowingly accessing the network, or it's permission was never revoked.

I know metro PC's has 4g coverage in certain markets. I am pretty sure she is getting 4g provitioned through metro. Also when flashing metro it always does not change the sprint sign on top. Even though it is running on metro. I think one way to find it is to ask her how much she pay a month. Because metro pcs plan with 4g is 10 dollars more.

That's a possibility, as I found out after making this thread that her phone was brand new in the box and activated on Sprint, but it was never used on Sprint at the time it was flashed over to Metro. All the other phones were used on Sprint and later disconnected from Sprint at one time or another and for one reason or another.
Is it possible to re-write the WiMax MAC address on the phone? If so, then I could back-up her WiMax settings using Amon and try flashing the RSA keys from her phone onto another phone after the MAC address has been changed to match hers. It's just a theory......I don't know. I'm willing to hear out any other ideas you guys may have.

That is definitely not the case. Metro's 4G network is not compatible with Sprint and will not work on the Evo. Sprint is the only carrier that uses WiMax for 4G, and the only way she should be able to connect to 4G is if she was paying Clear for their service.....which she is not. Her plan is the basic $40 a month for talk & text.....nothing more.
Using Rom Manager should make a FULL back up....including ALL wimax setting.

Agreed. However, the RSA keys for your WiMax are married to the MAC address on your phone. MAC addresses are not backed up as they are particular to individual hardware. Therefore, in order to try this I would first need to re-write the MAC address on whatever phone I'm flashing the WiMax back up onto to match the MAC address of the phone from which the WiMax back up came from.
Even then, it's a theory and it may not work.
Oh sorry I didn't knew that. I stand corrected. Also if you don't mind can you tell what sort of 3g speed you get with metro pcs.

No need to apologize.....input is appreciated and necessary to figure something out.
3G speeds? None. lol More like 1x speeds. Also, my Evo is on Sprint, so I wouldn't be able to tell you exactly what the download speeds are. I can tell you that it makes Sprint's super slow data speeds seem faster than lightning. lol
Next time I'm with any of the people who have a Metro Evo (which is quite often), I'll try to remember to download and run SpeedTest just to see what it does.

The EVO Flashed to Verizon

I'm more than likely posting this in the wrong section but it regards to an EVO so I apologize in advance....
Would it be possible to flash a Sprint EVO onto verizons network I want the EVO I looked into the thunderbolt and I think its nothing but garbage just my opinion, I had it for 10 days and it was so bad I went and returned it and went back to my incredible since I don't have 4g in North Dakota it would be an issue I got my MSL code from Verizon. I've seen the EVO on boost and pageplus unfortunately I only have IDEN coverage for boost no cdma or I would just go that route. So would this be possible??? I know there are sites claiming they have the files that will make it work but I'd rather not pay for something that might not work. I know what your thinking why not just switch to Sprint well we don't have coverage here. So my choices are Verizon, AT&T, & Nextel. Nextel is out of the question for the fact I believe its still completely IDEN which means not smartphones except for a blackberry and there is no way I will switch to a blackberry I had a hard time switching from winmo 6.5 to android.

Ugh... That's what I came across in my six hours of searching, but didn't they pass a law in 2006 that made it legal to switch carriers and flash it, since its your device you paid for it you should be able to do with it as you please within reason of course, also would it make a difference if the esn/meid is clean?
I mentioned pageplus in my op its a prepaid company owned by (Verizon) the evil V as I call it lol I know they got it boost which is as we all know is a prepaid company of Sprint which is seeming more and more like the best of the "big 4" soon to be the "big 3"

It is legal to do so, but the carrier has to approve the device and one big thing that won't be approved is the Sprint logo on the front of the device. Also I could be wrong, but for basic network coverage not counting Wimax since Verizon doesn't use Wimax, I believe Sprint and Verizon use different frequencies but I could be wrong.
There was a time when Sprint announced that they will activate any Verizon phone on their network. I can't remember if Verizon sued them, or if Sprint backed out. It was a very huge deal.

that's for their "4G", not the CDMA 1x/EvDO spectrum
Ah, that's true, I totally blanked on the fact that he doesn't have 4g coverage anyway and that issue isn't on the table
Thanks for all the input guys, maybe I can find a friend of mine that happens to have an EVO they would be willing to let me borrow to try this out on, and update prl and everything else and see if I can get to VZW ota programming prompt and if I can get that far, I should be close to in the clear see if I goes through completely or somehow rewrite the esn/meid's which probably isn't legal but I'm sure can be done lol, and browsing around early this morning I found out I can get page plus coverage haha but I refuse to give up my unlimited data, I know there is a way to flash it to them though.. but thank you again for all the input

Yeah but that's data roaming, little different.
It's possible just a few things you need:
1) Verizon has to approve it for their network
2) You would need your number AND your MIN as well as your cellular email address: it would be something like your10digit [email protected] verizon has for .com
3)Your MSL so you can program the phone for verizon (if you're rooted, MSL Reader from the Market will get that for you)
4)Verizon PRL
My evo is programed for cricket. AND the Evo can be programmed for boost. I went with cricket because there is no grey area there. Just program my phone for cricket, call them up and have them add my Evo's ESN.
Cricket was more than willing to give me the information I needed (MIN is the only thing I needed from them) and I got someone (who i guess works for cricket, one of those cricket forums) to add my ESN to my account. (you don't even have to change the radios, just change the PRL)
I look at it like this, Verizon takes a loss on every phone sold. Well every postpaid carrier does. So I would think they would jump at the chance for you to save them some money while spending money with them in the process.
How would I get them to accept the esn and accept the EVO for their service? I'm on a prepaid account now so I would be paying retail anyway...

The PRL you asked for is not the newest one bro, the current one is 52515 as of september 21.....I uploaded as a .txt file because XDA doesn't let me upload it as a .prl file so just edit it in rootexplorer or whatever file manager you got and take off the .txt....GOOD LUCK on whatever it is you're trying to do!

I believe when on the verizon PRL, it shows up as roaming; so people were getting notices/terminated for excessive roaming. Its an extreme use at your own risk deal.

im gonna do it after work. Im tired of sprints crappy data & I hope i get terminated in all honesty.
A few weeks ago, I got a phone call about excessive roaming data. I'm not on a Verizon or Hybrid PRL, and I have great signal, but data is extremely slow, and for some reason my phone will switch to Verizon or US Cellular. I didn't worry about it because the contract I signed said UNLIMITED data, both on and off network. But the call I got, the lady said I get 300MB roaming and 5GB Sprint 3G. She told me to take my phone to a Sprint repair center to get an exchange (I haven't been able to update my PRL or Profile since 01120). I declined because I refuse to get a refurbished phone. She then told me my line would continue to be monitored for compliance, and if not they will help me cancel my line or help port my number to another carrier.
I guess be careful using an unofficial Sprint PRL if you like Sprint's pricing.

So, I have a question. I have an HTC Merge and have downloaded the PRL posted here just in case. I have backed up my APN and everything else just in case, because I am wanting to use a custom version of the new Gingerbread rom released by USCC. Is there anything else I should do just to make sure I am still able to use my phone?
does any body have verizon 52669 prl? would you please share it?
I need to upgrade my roaming list...
thanks!
