My wife and I each have rooted Nook Tablets and love them. A friend of my Wife's where she works saw her NT and comment that she had one too and it didn't do all that my Wife's was doing. My Wife told her ours were rooted and explained what that was and what it allowed you to do. Her friend was very excited and asked if we'd root hers for her. Now that we know how to do it and how easy it is, we readily agreed.
However, when my Wife brought her friend's Nook home, I quickly found out that it is a Nook Color v.1.4.1, not a Nook Tablet. I know there are different rooting procedures and I'm not really familiar with them at all. So I'm coming here for advice.
My Wife's friend wants her NC to be pretty much like or NTs and by that I mean no full OS replacement. She just wants pretty much a stock NC with root access, gapps suite and an additional 3rd party launcher like Go Launcher EX. Which rooting procedure would best help me give her what she's wanting? Any advice would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Sincerely,
- Byron Followell

Why are you just doing yourself a headache?
If she wanted to be like yours then why just telling her getting a NT?
Anyway, you are such a good friend to her.

First, im apologizing in advance for being in my current situation. Ok so I paid a friend of a friend to root my mytouch 4g, and now I can't save my contacts to my sim card. After the root, is when I gained interest in software development...
I have been studying these forums extensively and I'm having a hard time learning. I'm a visual learner. I have tried to get ahold of the guy that rooted for me and he doesn't respond.
How can I tell what rom I'm running? I know I'm 2.3.2.? I need lots of learning. And there is just TONS of info on software that I'm not sure of.
Any reference links for "actual" beginners? Or videos? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Once again my apologies.
Sorry nobody answered earlier but there's a lot of videos on you tube but the thing I can tell you is read read and read again everything is much simpler than you think you just gotta know your **** first and you'll never get started without reading otherwise your phone will be an expensive brick
Most likely your phone is running cm7 if its 2.3.2

Thank you sir. I have seen several you tubes, non however performed on a Mac. I'm not certain if it will work correctly and I just want to be sure! I really would like a strait up tutor!! Haha anyone in phx up for it!? Anyway thanks again for the input. Any more suggestions are appreciated guys!
Never rooted a NC before but have tried with a Coby and it took me a week because so many guides "assumed" too much of the user and left steps out. I hope this time around it'll be easier and more straightforward.
Anyway, I'd like to install Gingerbread 2.3.4 but as a "stable" OS with working wifi please. Can anyone direct me to a guide that will show me how to do this from start to finish?
Thanks a lot.
You're asking how to do two different things that don't necessarily go together. Anyway, this is as "For Dummies" as it gets: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88qRbLLEAPQ&feature=channel_video_title
It's two months old, which is an eternity in CM7 dev time, but it looks like the uploader is keeping the links up to date.
Also this thread has some basic terms and references: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13657391&postcount=1
ETA: If you actually want to have some idea of what you're doing and why you're doing it, this might help, too: http://quinxy.com/guides/how-to-pick-your-nook-color-operating-system-and-install-options/
Thanks for the links, Taosaur. I'll check them out and see how I do.

make sure you understand all the steps . and do it in 1 row, not like me i did it in 4 days. And look if all the files are in the root-manual. do not download them from google etc. big chance for virus's
root-manual?
I would recommend KFU.... try to get a liliputing video guide... or rootzwiki. Hope this helps sorry I do not have any links.

Its really not to hard. Just go slow and follow each step as outlined in one of the many guides. Check the stickies and read them through to make sure you know what you are doing before hand. Also be sure to make a back up right away in case something happens. Finally dot freak out if something does go wrong because the kindle is pretty forgiving and able to be unbricked.

If you have any problems search the forums for your problem and spend a little time reading.
I will bet you any amount of money you problem has been discussed hundreds of times.
I have seen people post threads stating "OMG My Kindle Is Broken help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
And there will be 2-3 threads on the first page that had they spent 5 minutes looking could have solved their problem.
if you want to use a custom lock screen which is pretty cool, read my thread here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1497383
I’m a noob – LOVED the video
Hello, I have a ton of questions, but, after watching the registration video I would feel guilty if I asked any of them! So I’m writing just to introduce myself. My name is Valerie. I am a software engineer by education (and 15 years experience) but now I am a system engineer and I’ve been away from computer geekiness for about 6 years. I have just bought a Kindle Fire and I am excited to embark on an adventure back to geekdom.
My purchase of a KF was motivated by a) the discovery of an equestrian app that I would like to have that is available for the Android, b) the price point of the KF, and c) the knowledge that the KF can be rooted.
However, since I am new to the whole Kindle and Android world (I do not own any Android devices), there is a lot of terminology and slang that I am unfamiliar with. I am reading the KFFB, and the supplement to KFFB that describes how to root/install a ROM, unroot/revert to stock, etc. and trying to absorb them, but I think I’ll have to read them a couple of times before they really sink in.
My goal is to load the latest Android operating system (Jelly Bean?) on my KF and be able to run all the fun Android apps.
What is a little bit confusing is to me right now is the fact that there are multiple descriptions of the steps in the rooting process available on the web, each with its own list of required software utilities that you must obtain first, and I don’t have warm fuzzy feeling that I know exactly which process is the most up-to-date, and which process is the best one for me to use. But, I shall keep reading. If someone can point me to the most up-to-date source, that would be awesome and I would be most grateful
I also have a general question about sideloading. If I sideload a non-Amazon Kindle Fire app before I do the rooting, can I still run that app afterwards? Since Kindle Fire is based upon Android 2.3, the idea of running a Kindle app vs. an Android app is still a little confusing. The basic question of “Isn’t a “Kindle” app already an “Android” app?” is stuck in my mind. Oh well, as I said, I’ll keep reading …
Anyway, I just wanted to say Hello and I can’t wait to root my KF but I want to make sure I have all the right info before I do.
Thanks,
Valerie

I am a noob myself, also loved the video, but I have rooted my KF and flashed to gedeROM (LOVING IT)
In my experience, which is definitely not all encompassing, all apps I had loaded before flashing were still there. I believe as long as you don't do a system restore (hope I'm right here) your apps will stay put.
Also, I used Kindle Fire Utilities to do most everything, and except for a hitch with returning the KF to normal boot, had no issues at all. After doing it all once, I flashed back to stock to just make sure I could, and then cleared everything and started fresh with gederom again. After you've done it all once, you can do the whole process is about 5 minutes, from root to boot. It really is so much simpler in practice than the steps make it sound...once you've done it, you'll understand.
Oh, and as far as apps downloaded through the Kindle Store. After flashing a new rom, you may need to download the amazon appstore and install it to keep using those apps (I had to.) Once that was done, I was able to use them.
If I've gotten anything wrong here, I will correct or remove it as needed, as this is all from my limited experience
Hi noobs! Figured I'd step on in this room because I to am a noob wait, this is a thread I think? Anyway rooting is really easy... Just go to...
Forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399889
and download the latest "current version"
Read the thread and search youtube for some walk through vids and you'll be rooted in no time... Hope this helps, goodluck.

Oh ****, there goes the neighborhood.
Hello Everyone,
I recently welcomed myself into the world of Tables with a purchase of a Nook HD. I usually research everything so in depth before purchasing that I drive myself MAD in the process. I purchased this Nook Hd on Christmas eve afternoon for the wife, now before everyone or the women reading, says "typical man" waits until the last minute, know that this was in addition to several other gifts that where purchased several days prior to Christmas, I just felt she didn't have enough. Anyway! I was rather upset to find that the Nook was "incapable" (for lack of a better word) of performing what I would like to call "normal" functions. So I figured I would bring myself into the world of Rooting.
To make myself clear I am a complete NOOB / Beginner. Lets just say I know what it is I never tried to root anything. I've always been happy with stock versions of my original Galaxy phone, and now (SORRY) Iphone. Work makes me have that. So I researched and researched as I'm not a Moron when it comes to computers and such as I do have an Engineering degree only it is in Mechanical Things! HA! In my research I watched a million you tube videos read a million Posts on a million different Webpages and I came to find several very informative people and loads of information. I do believe that I’m one dangerous Hacker now. Well…. Maybe I should read a little more!
To make my story Short, I've never rooted anything, well anything electronic, I didn't have a clue what any of this terminology was until I came across this Website and these Forums.
THANK YOU leapinlar for the post and whoever else was involved in making those files!!!
I read and read and read and guess what I have a Nook HD. v 2.0.5 running the universal root CWM with google play and working fabousley!!!!
Thank you! Thank you! Now this "stupid' (for lack of a better word) original tablet has functionality!!!
