maybe a suggestion?

Now I'm fully aware of my n00b status, and will not deny it at all, however last night when I was in the midst of my ROM installation fiasco (worked out well in the end!) I thought of something that might be pretty useful when doing all this flashing back to stock in order to load a custom rom...(and then messing up the custom rom, then loading backup, then messing that up, then almost bricking, then freaking out over possible brick, then figuring out how to really use ODIN3, then starting stock, lol....the past 12 hours has been a serious learning experience, but fun now that it's done)
The process I followed to install the Cognition ROM involved taking my bone stock captivate and rooting it, then installing ROM Manager, then backup, etc....Here's my suggestion, take it for what it's worth, and if I'm overstepping my boundaries, try to be nice about letting me know
I've noticed that there are many root "packages" where it installs root, and lagfixes, and a ton of other stuff, but (and maybe I haven't looked hard enough, but I've looked...) I noticed there isn't just a root "package" that ONLY roots the phone and installs ROM Manager only...this is my suggestion- make one! Maybe include Titanium backup, but since I was a bone stock Captivate, I didn't really have too much invested in apps, since I knew I was going to be going back and forth, and I intend on keeping it that way for a while, since I am still learning. But yeah- Root, ROM Manager, and Titanium Backup package would pretty much be the sh*t!
Now, I know I haven't contributed a damn thing to this forum, but this seems like it would be a handy tool to have, and while it's benefits are marginal (you save the whole 3 or 4 minutes to go to the market and install these apps) it makes life a little easier in a world where life isn't always easy (as I found out last night/this morning
If something like this exists already, forgive me for my ignorance and please point me in the right direction. I'm not trying to step on any toes or offend anyone, I just think this would be handy to have, and judging from the knowledge floating around this forum, it *seems* like it would be something fairly elementary for some of you extremely knowledgeable folks to do..
My apologies for such a long-winded post, but I tend to be that way, and again...thanks to all on this forum for a treasure trove of information to read through and slowly acquaint myself with the Android OS...It's hella better than the 3gs Iphone I previously had.......

There are one click root methods, there are other packages that remove AT&T bloat and toss in a few other goodies. A word of caution, read, read, read, learn as much as you can from all of our mistakes before you go making the same ones. You should read an entire thread before jumping ahead and flashing, that way you avoid fiascos and possible brick your phone. Read all of the stickies at the top of the page, then browse all of the topics discussed, usually if you read an entire thread your questions will be answered in it. If you run into trouble and need help you will find it here. Happy hunting!

+1 to this and yes there is indeed a one-click root already (as bare as you can get). installing ROM manager and titanium can be your job after that (how hard is that? takes like 5 seconds). and yes, read! reading is your friend! read read read read and then when you feel like you've learned everything you can, read more because you still haven't figured it all out. and again, because this doesn't provide anything NEW or unique to Android running on the Samsung Captivate, please keep it to General.

As far as reading, that's all I've been doing for the past 2 months (hence, my low post count...didn't want to post when an answer is around the corner) Coming from the Iphone, this is a whole new monster, and all the reading I've done has benefited me infinitely

Enjoy your phone, I love mine, I'm a noob too and I spend hours everyday studying these forums. Everyone on here is very helpfull, I use Designgears stuff and love it. His new ROM is amazing it will make your phone fly. My phone has never worked like this, my battery life has improved drastically since flashing this ROM last night. youtube walkthroughs?

Hey guys, looking through the various threads in general, and development I see so many people with questions from the basics up to the most complex stuff. I was thinking of doing a series of videos that go step by step through the basics and beyond to the most complex stuff. Would anybody be interested in a series of videos like that? I just ask cause I don't wanna spend all that time doing them to get nobody watching them. And if you guys have specific questions you'd like to see on there feel free to give your ideas/comments.

i think its great! I would like step by step to updating unoffical updates ie 3.1/3.2

WiFi root would be good. The Xoom is my wife's. Life would be so difficult if I bricked it.

MZ604 walkthrough would be perfect. im a noob when comes to rooting and i dont want brick mine xoom because im not sure about guides. show everything step by step, and give direct links to apps on rapidshare etc. will be soooooo grateful.

Informational videos are always apprieciated! Most people willing to learn will definately watch them. Let us know!

I would love to see a walkthrough of going from fully stock 3.2 (WiFi Only Xoom) to rooted and running a Tiamat 3.2 kernel or ROM.
Hell if someone could explain the difference between a kernel and ROM that would be a great start.
I know there are many "how to's" and "idiot's guides", but for me actually seeing someone do something is so much easier to understand. There are always little steps or tricks that get left out of written instructions that a video would be great. There are just as many "help my Xoom is stuck in a boot loop" or "help my Xoom is bricked" type posts that obviously this type of walkthrough would be helpfull. I know I would appreciate it. I have read many of the step by step guides and am still apprehensive of making that jump.

ABC how to root,install rom.

I did my first post to day after many hours reading about how to root.
I made it with out help,but I was not confident.
I got a privat message Where someone aked how I did it. I have to say " Don't ask me".
The reason is that there seem to be a lot of traps along the way.
I read about one metod and started that,but then there was a warning and another suggestion. Then I went for the next one and again another suggestion.
I gave up and just picked the one with largest tread .
The things I'm wondering about are . Is there a sticky about how to step by step do it ,or do everybody need to read a lot and still be unsure about whitch way to go for?
Normally one way is better.
Is it not possible to concentrate it around one way?
There are lots of treads about how to do it but I'm confused about the warnings " if yod did it that way you can't use this file ,but need to look around for a file that you can use"
I did put in a new kernel and want to try a complete Rom,but I don't know if I can use a kk9 rom for my phone. There was a warning about use CF ready or made Rom ??
Is there,or if not, why is there not a sticky about how to tweak the easiest and most widely used way for beginners in this forum?
Then more people dear to start. More people is more money to those who make the files.
If there are many ways and conflicts,maybe a link to the compatible way can be posted together with the rom,kernel or what type of file that's posted.
Please correct me if I'm the only one that feels that there are to many choices for nearly the same thing.
Maybe I'm spoiled from the way the Norwegian apple forum was build for beginners to professionals.

Yeah after paying what I paid and probably would have to deal with a nightmare of a return I'm not about to root or anything until its been run through it's paces a million times. Actually since there don't seem to be any solid ROMS yet I have not desire to anyway.
Also I rooted and unrooted my ATT Galaxy S2 a bunch of times and it ended up not able to connect voice calls for some reason. Had to return it. Not sure if it was related but I don't want to risk it with the Note.

I used to enjoy the video's explaining the Jailbreaking process from start to finish(iPhone). Has anyone seen a video guide for rooting/Roms? The only experience I have with Rom flashing is from the Windows mobile days, where as easy as jailbreaking(easier infact)

Within it is a (Great) review of the Note. It is IMO worth to read it through, although it is very long.

[Q] [noob]Looking for advice: My goal - kindle fire, rooted, cyanogen mod 7

Ok so first and foremost, I own a samsung captivate, so I know a little about android. I've rooted it.
Now I'm looking to enter the tablet scene. Being a college student, I'm looking for cheap ones lol. I've seen a video on youtube with someone running cyanogenmod 7 with working sound on the kindle fire and so i found that to be my best bet on getting the most out of a cheap tablet.
reading up on the rooting for the KF, I found people with version 6.2.2 to have met a lot of issues.
I Plan on ordering one later this month, so I'm putting my guess on it'll be in the latest version (6.2.2) and that gives me the caution that makes me write this post
anyways what are your (the experts from XDA - being anyone not me) thoughts, and advice for me to avoid bricking and ruining a 200 buck investment (or perhaps 180 if i get refurbished)?

i bought kindle fire when the 1st time it released. during that time, superoneclick is the utility to root, now with new firmware, we can use burritoroot.. so far i haven't heard total bricked issue (i think so). common problem usually bootloop, stuck in bootloader. etc but all can be fixed... i think no need to be afraid. i already root, unroot, install various recovery, backup, restore backup, etc and not a single problem.
if u want to install cm7, that is a good choice but some minor bugs still exist but so far cm7 is most stable compare to other custom rom (except "custom stock" rom)..

The Kindle Fire is a great choice. I have two (one for my wife) and have loved every minute with them. I ran the factory rom for all of 2 weeks before rooting and eventually settling on CM9. I really enjoy the ice cream sandwich version despite the minor bugs. These are very quickly disappearing as the wonderful devs are pounding away the code to make our life better.
So as a college student get a kindle they are cheep and I have found to be very robust. Then quickly ditch the horrible and limited kindle rom. CM7 or CM9 is a fine choice you will be happy with your sweet tablet. I get comments on mine all the time.

Awesome, you guys are reassuring me with making this purchase.
I'm quite intrigued by the comparison of CM7 and CM9.
any personal opinion on the difference? (I'm watching youtube videos now, but I like cutting down false feedback from trolls in the comments lol.)

CM7 is stable and work flawlessly for me
CM9 is (yet) in experimental phase
If you want to make experiments with your rom, take CM9
If you just want to flash rom and forget about it, take CM7

I have no problem helping people out, and I hate to be the prude who calls you out, but there are tons of threads just like yours already in the forum which people have already answered. Basically you want a tutorial, which there are many of in the forums, but you instead made a new post. In the future, spend more than 5 minutes in the forums before calling out for help.

after KF was updated, I ran across the instructions to use burrito2 or 3, in which case upon searching, 3/4th of the posts found was "I'm having problems"
I simply wanted to take an extra precaution before making a big jump in a budget... I apologize if that seemed redundant to the people who take the time out to aid people like me, but I assure I thank you all regardless of this point ^^ .

good point. The price point on the KG has brought a flood of noobs who don't understand forum etiquette. And there are plenty of posts that offer bad help. I am like you and spent five days reading and bookmarking and rereading. Do all the root with adb and not the scripts is my best advice. Good luck.

Hello, I have a ton of questions, but, after watching the registration video I would feel guilty if I asked any of them! So I’m writing just to introduce myself. My name is Valerie. I am a software engineer by education (and 15 years experience) but now I am a system engineer and I’ve been away from computer geekiness for about 6 years. I have just bought a Kindle Fire and I am excited to embark on an adventure back to geekdom. 
My purchase of a KF was motivated by a) the discovery of an equestrian app that I would like to have that is available for the Android, b) the price point of the KF, and c) the knowledge that the KF can be rooted.
However, since I am new to the whole Kindle and Android world (I do not own any Android devices), there is a lot of terminology and slang that I am unfamiliar with. I am reading the KFFB, and the supplement to KFFB that describes how to root/install a ROM, unroot/revert to stock, etc. and trying to absorb them, but I think I’ll have to read them a couple of times before they really sink in.
My goal is to load the latest Android operating system (Jelly Bean?) on my KF and be able to run all the fun Android apps.
What is a little bit confusing is to me right now is the fact that there are multiple descriptions of the steps in the rooting process available on the web, each with its own list of required software utilities that you must obtain first, and I don’t have warm fuzzy feeling that I know exactly which process is the most up-to-date, and which process is the best one for me to use. But, I shall keep reading. If someone can point me to the most up-to-date source, that would be awesome and I would be most grateful 
I also have a general question about sideloading. If I sideload a non-Amazon Kindle Fire app before I do the rooting, can I still run that app afterwards? Since Kindle Fire is based upon Android 2.3, the idea of running a Kindle app vs. an Android app is still a little confusing. The basic question of “Isn’t a “Kindle” app already an “Android” app?” is stuck in my mind. Oh well, as I said, I’ll keep reading …
Anyway, I just wanted to say Hello and I can’t wait to root my KF but I want to make sure I have all the right info before I do.

I am a noob myself, also loved the video, but I have rooted my KF and flashed to gedeROM (LOVING IT)
In my experience, which is definitely not all encompassing, all apps I had loaded before flashing were still there. I believe as long as you don't do a system restore (hope I'm right here) your apps will stay put.
Also, I used Kindle Fire Utilities to do most everything, and except for a hitch with returning the KF to normal boot, had no issues at all. After doing it all once, I flashed back to stock to just make sure I could, and then cleared everything and started fresh with gederom again. After you've done it all once, you can do the whole process is about 5 minutes, from root to boot. It really is so much simpler in practice than the steps make it sound...once you've done it, you'll understand.
Oh, and as far as apps downloaded through the Kindle Store. After flashing a new rom, you may need to download the amazon appstore and install it to keep using those apps (I had to.) Once that was done, I was able to use them.
If I've gotten anything wrong here, I will correct or remove it as needed, as this is all from my limited experience
