Hi Folks,
I've had a TP2 for a while now and modded it loads of time with help on this site and wanted another unit with android so I bought the magic from another user on here called thedalmeny, the deal went through flawlessly may I add.
I am not a noob when it comes to modding but I am when it comes to the magic! I have a Vodafone branded Magic in the UK 32B.
Now the Magic was rooted when I got it and has Qteknology Devs Roms for VodaMagic 32b.
How do i find out which SPL has been used on it?
Also, I'm finding this rom to be a bit slow, which one's could I use instead?
And i'm getting a notification, "SD card is damaged" it's asking me to format it. If I do this via the phone is that ok?
thanks for the help.
I don't wanna be an ahole, but seriously. You just asked a ridiculous question, it's the most simple and most basic question. it's answered EVERYWHERE because you NEED it if you even wanna root your phone, it's the first thing you check. Seeing as how you modified your TP2, you should have some knowledge on how to look up info yourself. Please don't tell me people spoonfed you every step of the way.

Have you even tried looking for help? Start here: I click on the dev section and theres a bunch of stickies. People also always ask which roms they could use, take a look at the other 8126189217 threads. But seriously: Do something yourself. Spoonfeeding = more horrible questions. I don't see why your questions should be answered here when they're all already answered elsewhere. Trust me, you'll continue asking more and more. There's a lot you have to know and you could learn all this if you read things and searched.
As for the third question, I guess thats an ok question, not really but sort of. Why is it not ok to format via phone? I don't see how it could damage it more or anything. Just make sure everything on your sd card is backed up incase.
Hopefully from now on, you can do some research yourself and if you get really stuck, we'll definitely help.
Haha, love it. Don't worry, I don't take offence easily!
Come on, I see these types of questions all the time and they always get answered.
Yes, I realise this one has been answered, not exactly the way I would've liked it but still it is much appreciated.
I have already done a whole bunch of reading, I just wanted the learning curve not to be so steep...
Flashing a TP2 rom seems a piece of cake compared to all the messing you have to do with the magic.
My real q was to do with the SD card really, I added the other 2 as a cheeky try to get info easy, don't worry, lesson learned.
The reason why I asked about the SD card because I've read that you need to partition this and that and did not want to format the sd card incase the format would not make all the necessary partitions and it would in some way brick the phone. I know, I know, how could the sd brick the phone. Just wanted to check.
Cheers.
Yeah the learning curve is a bit steep, but if you need help or something you can just send me a pm and hit me up on google talk or something. The SD card only has to be Fat32 and you're set. Theres other things such as swap/ext partitions which are explained in other help topics but to be honest, you don't need them. It's more for the old G1/Dream devices. You can use swap if you want but I find my phone perfect without it. if I'm correct, it may even cause some damage on your sd card (although im not 100% sure). But yeah, if you really do need help (I personally find it easier talking to someone rather than reading a billion instructions as well) then let me know via pm.
Hello, I was wondering what the benefits of rooting the My Touch 4g would be? Would this allow me to remove the bloatware that came pre-installed on the phone? Also I've heard talk of a possible better rom to put on the phone. Would someone be able to explain why this would be better and what rom might be better?
Thanks

Disclaimer/Advice/Humble Opinion:
My advice (without trying to hurt anyone's feelings too much) is DON'T ROOT. I would suggest you familiarize yourself with everything (Linux, ADB, XDA, Google) before diving in head first.
Despite popular belief, having root does NOT in fact make you cooler.
Way too many new users are trying to root because they think it's cool or heard it's cool. You need to learn your device first.
If you don't know how to perform a Nandroid backup, or restore a previous ROM backup, flash updates, install custom ROM's etc, then you should NOT root. You should browse the forums here, read everything until you know it well. Google search related topics. Exhaust all available avenues, then ask questions. After you've executed all of these options you might consider rooting and starting to tinker with your device.
I second what CBC has said. They lock these phones down for business and support reasons, mainly that having root lets you pretty easily screw things up. You shouldn't root unless you have a good idea of what's actually going on, how to back out of it, etc. Just page through some of the root/unroot threads and look at all the stupid questions people post. If they don't look stupid to you, please read read read before thinking any more about rooting.
Don't take any personal offense to this, it just that there's a real chance you can brick your device. The software root itself is fairly safe but at least the original method to disabling the write protection--flashing the engineering hboot--modifies your last line of defense in fixing a broken device.

Benefits to you zero. If you can't do a simple search of google to find out the benefits or if rooting is even for then I can say it will have no benefits to you

Wow, so much for friendly forum help huh...
Sorry not trying to be rude or unhelpful I'm just blunt I could've sugar coated it but what would be the point. You obviously found us using one of the many search engines out there just change your query and you won't get flamed.
As a side note anyone else in the future please do some research before asking this.

Sometimes the benefits are little things that are not found in change logs. Things that are only discovered through usage by people who have already rooted their devices.

Amen! I could read all day long till I am blue in the face and I have. I did not think asking people who are familiar with the process would be such a bad thing..
Good job with the flaming though. I'll just chalk it up as internet small man syndrome...
@spazfishy
I first started tweaking my phones with a couple WM HTC devices. I did it mostly to increase performance and become a member of a community of geeks (for lack of a better term). BTW, when I say tweak I don't mean building ROMs or writing code. I'm an idiot in that regard.
I'm a year and a month into having Android phones and I still don't know anything about SDK, very, very little about ADB push/pull, etc. Still, I've managed to have fun with my phones and have rooted and toyed with them without any issue worse than a boot loop here and there. It's fun to be the first guy to get an update for a ROM because you're eagerly hitting refresh on the supporting thread. There's also a satisfaction in reading a ****load of info on these forums and figuring out something by yourself or with a little input from the guys here.
I can agree that you should read as much as you can about how these phones work. However, you don't need to know as much as you might think. What helped me was watching some youtube videos...walkthroughs of rooting and tutorials for installing ROMs.
It's **** like this, XDA.
Instead of telling this guy "sorry, rooting is too difficult for your little brain to comprehend, you're just going to end up bricking you're phone" why don't you try to help him with his problem?
I've been following XDA for a while now, and it bothers me that many of you would rather treat this as some type of subculture when we're only talking about ****ing cell phones. Instead, why not try to grow this little community, and show carriers that consumers not only desire open source, they demand it in products they spend their hard earned money buy.
Things will only get there if we can rely on developers and enthusiasts to help spread their knowledge. Modaco and Cyanogen already do a really good job of it, and so does AOSP.
I say to spazfishy, yes. Root you're phone, but not right now. Wait a bit. As more stable ROMs became available, this is actually a good way of getting your phone to behave the way you want it to. And if you've been on this website before, you know the risks involved so do you're homework, and happy hunting.
Hopefully you'll find someone with talent willing to help you.

I SECOND this sentiment. yes, I agree with the overall concept that people should do a search on the forums first and that we don't "need " several separate threads with the same info... however how much better is it really to have a bunch of threads floating around (taking up just as much space as the redundant threads that everyone treats as a plague) chastising and mocking people who just want a little help with their friggin phone??
I've recently been spending a lot of time on these forums after picking up my mt4g and as useful as these forums are - every third thread is someone belittling a poster for asking a simple question. it's pathetic and not beneficial to our community.

Its not that we are flaming anyone its just that we see the same questions over and over. If the question was I've rooted my device now what can do any pointers you would've gotten much more answers. I remember before I rooted my first device I had the same question so I googled that and it came up with pros and cons simple as that.
As far as the small man syndrome over the internet I drive a huge diesel truck with smoke stacks chew and work out endlessly but I'm 4'11" so I don't just do it over the internet. ;-)

Ya so he could send it back thus driving up the price of new phones and causing phone manufacturers to lose money and causing more headaches for them as well as others.

yes, heaven forbid he not do EXACTLY what you did!
in a Q&A forum no less..give me a break. and no, I'm not gonna keep going on and on about this in this thread. i'm done.
it just proves the original point i was trying to make - which is now we just have another thread on this boards of people being a**holes and talking down to other people just because they don't possess the exact same information you do or because they aren't going about your perfect prescribed process for obtaining said information..whatever.
if someone asks a question you don't like - why don't you just go re-root your phone? or put your wife's cat in the microwave?
if you have the answer - why not take the 90 seconds it was going to take you to be a giant tool and just answer the question?
OR if redundant posts is really THAT big of a problem on here - then have moderators just delete these posts? or figure out how to become a moderator and then you can play forum cop in all of your spare time and delete these posts and actually be part of a solution not just a part of another problem.
see all you happy campers in another post
have a nice day.
(and btw - CBC - at least your initial reply had some actual information in it and geniune advice. jjackson was just being a jerk. that's what i thought was totally unnecessary. and as far it being 'my turn' - since i've been regularly reading this forum, i do answer questions when i feel like i have something to contribute..this is my first android phone and i have only temp rooted so that's why i didn't answer his post to begin with)
Ok well I'm sorry if I otherwise offended anyone with my rants.

Hey, a big thanks to the people that were actually helpful. For real this reply will be short and simple but seriously to the haters. Why do you even waste your time replying if you do not like my question? Are you simply here to feel powerful and mock people? Like why would you go out of your way to call me and idiot and assume I am going to break my phone? I really don't see what's in it for you besides a self attained ego boost. Hence the small man comment...
So to the helpful people: thedroid, daryllh, Sl3PR, ckisgen and anyone else with a helpful word or two your comments are much appreciated and with your wisdom I am slightly more educated and will make a decision. And to the others well I didn't know my text took up so much space!! Good luck in scaring more new users away! I hope you guys get a lot of people to click your donation buttons!

lol sorry, I'm quite new to this. Only grabbed the device yesterday. I've been an Android person through and through since the launch of the original Droid, so this is all new territory. I'm guessing that's a hint to head that direction. Specific links are always appreciated though otherwise I'll just do more snooping tomorrow. It's not quite like Android, Google-ing my questions doesn't always yield answers. Or perhaps I'm just not googling the right thing. Time will tell.

With NoDo, Assuming your in the US, you got the Verizon Trophy that was shipped with the NoDo update. Your only method to "unlocking"(to allow you to sideload or other mods) your phone is to go with a Dev-unlock.
It's a process but, you could get it unlocked directly through MS, for dev reasons. If you have a .EDU address, it could be free.
So, in looking for a unlock, you do have a Nodo based device, so use that as a general look when you looking for updates or unlock methods.
If your a Noob with WP7, spend some time in the WP7 areas and READ !!! Spend a few hours reading the threads, save yourself headaches later... and Do some searches before asking questions, most newer questions have been asked a ton of times.

Good luck !
(PS. If your going to Mango, you can Dev-unlock fine but, Backup, Backup, Backup....Don't understate this)

Thank you kind sir, that's what I was looking for. And I do have a .edu account so I'll definitely look into that! I was loathe to ask this question because I know it's always frustrating to see a question asked that has an obvious answer elsewhere, I simply did not know where that elsewhere was. With Android pretty much any question is a basic Google search away, and if not that then simply go to the device-specific forum but it seems it's not quite that way with WP7. Or perhaps it is and I was just immensely confused. Regardless, now I know where to start though You are most kind.

Just want to help if I can.
Just remember if you get it unlocked, with mango your limited to 3 Sideloading apps and on CDMA(Verizon or Sprint) based devices there is no current work around for it. With NoDO if you apply the reg hacks, you are unlimited as far as I know for sideloading. Note the limits before you pull all your hair out.
Again, going to mango, make sure you have a backup, you can NOT update to the final version if you do not restore.
Don't forget the thanks button if I helped you, that's all I ask.
If you need to deploy more than the 3 limit in mango, I figured it out....

Okay... we're getting too many threads here with the same problems.
If you think you've bricked your phone or can't figure out what you've done or are stuck, you need to search the forum. There is a LOT of information already here that can help you.
Honestly, if you feel like you could easily get to this point you should probably do more research before doing any modding of your phone.
If you can't find anything, then go to the #Samsung-Continuum channel on IRC ( http://webchat.freenode.net/ ) And see if anyone is there to help you. If not, wait.
If you cannot wait, then search again using different terminology.
Then, if you haven't gotten a fix, you should post your problem within the thread for whatever it was you were trying to do when you messed up your phone.
This will keep our forums usable and the important information where everyone can see it.

Somehow I ended up with my device, and a bunch of other random forums... like this one .
I am happy they gave me my device tho .
Directions are not good....
I started downloading the files, but honestly guys - I've repartitioned harddrives on a desktop before, reformatted them from DOS into a Windows OS, I've assisted in networking (using windows home based server) a small office (4 people). Your directions to do this are so vauge, I'm not even gonna try in fear I screw it up. I appreciate everything I read on your forum, but not even a google search of all this is helpful, cuz all that's found, is you guys, and your directions are far from step by step. YOu wouldn't be having people post with so many issues if you laid it out for those who are not all that great with technology. Being quite in depth and knowledgeable myself, I know that if it were laid out a little less "techy", even those unfamiliar with these processes would be able to get done without so many issues. Sorry, I don't mean any disrespect, you guys are awesome, helpful, and plain extremely smart, and for those who arise to understanding all the tech lingo and can get themselves partially through this process without a step by step, more power to them. Just thought it would be helpful since I see so many "I screwed up my phone posts".
thank you.

none of the above
if u have read the "i screwed up my phone posts" or been in Irc, you would find out that most were failed flashes found on other sites,
our directions do not "brick" phones, when did our post start pointing guns at the reader?

This is a DEVELOPERS forum. It's that simple. If you're not up to speed on modifying your device it is not our job to get you there. Read and re-read until you understand and if that doesn't happen then DON'T TRY IT.
That said there are a lot of people around here who would be more than happy to try to help you. Just use the PM function or the IRC chat, please. ;D
it annoys me when people post sounding threads all frantic saying i think i bricked witch is a term thrown around far to much these days because the fact of the matter is, is its almost impossible brick a samsung device
A while back I bricked my phone and was not able to find a correct ROM for it, ROMs posted on various forums which were specifically tagged to be for HTC 816G dual SIM or HTC 816H dual SIM didn't really work. After searching for a long time I got to know there's two HTC 816G models, one is quad core and one octacore, I have the Octacore one. Tried searching again with this new piece of information and found a ROM, flashed it using SP flash tool, this was a ROM from needrom website, this also failed.
Now that I was back to the square one, I tried searching again and found a ROM that finally worked but not as expected, I flashed it, phone came back to life but the problem I have now is that dual SIM support has been revoked or removed. I am stuck with single SIM for a while and was busy so didn't search any more. There are a lot of threads about this particular model and people keep tagging it but I have searched almost all and none seem to work in this case. It's a request to all of you, please don't tag a post in the reply if you haven't understood the real problem... Thank you
Well If someone doesn't understand the "real problem" it's probably because you didn't explain it properly in the first place maybe in a previous post. This one looks like a very good explanation but good luck getting many helpful responses with that smarmy " don't waste my time " final comment. Hope I'm wrong and someone does help but you should leave that last part out next time if you expect much help.
what thoctor said.
There's a difference between helping and wasting time...
And that's the attitude that's going to get you none of the "first" and as for the "second" your right! I'm not going to let you waste any more of my valuable time so good luck and keep up that humble appreciative attitude. I'm sure It's what's gotten you to where you are right now.
Common you can do better I guess... u seem to have sheer experience in wasting time and pretending to help...
Yeah, my history of helping people here is pretty good so whatever. The issue is you cant take constructive criticism and thats your problem not mine. You do realize your the one coming here with a broken device needing help right? Because i dont think you get that part very well yet (i.e. all your "trash" talking.) Oh well. Some people just like learning the hard way I guess. Good luck to you and you can send something else back but i wont be reading it or responding anymore so save your typing fingers.
In a good mood today, thank you for your HELP
