Live Wallpapers (like for example Planetscapes) are very laggy/have slow frame rates on the 7.7 compared to for example the Galaxy S2, even though the 7.7 has a faster CPU. I have tried several laundhers (Go, ADW EX, Stock) but the Live Wallpapers both update slowly and the scrolling when switching home-screens is jittery.
Any way to improve this? Maybe Gingerbread is to blame?

Well on the 7.7, you're using the same GPU and only a ~17% faster CPU to render 640,000 more pixels than you would on the S2. So, yeah, it should come as no surprise that active backgrounds are going to be more sluggish on the 7.7 compared to the S2.
There is no way to fix this. Use static backgrounds and/or disable wallpaper scrolling.
P.S. Gingerbread is not installed on the 7.7

Yup. I was thinking about the increased pixel-count too. I meant to write honeycomb.
As you say, the 7.7 has 166% more pixels.. That's quite a lot and I guess that explains it. :|
3D games play smoothly on the tab7.7 so i doubt its a hardware limit.

3D games are usually GPU accelerated. Live wallpapers usually aren't.
The same livewallpapers run smoothly on the galaxy note.
I think it is honeycomb problem I have galaxy note (same screen resolution as 7.7 tab) and same processor and i tried hundreds of heavy live wallpapers from market with no lag

Let's hope so. Maybe it will be smoother with the release of ICS.

I recently got a hold of a Samsung Captivate and was amazed on how smooth and snappy the phone was, but couldn't help notice that it was faster than my Tab at stock. I mean apps were loading instantly and the browser running at lightning speed.
I compared the Captivate to different firmwares that I was using on my Tab, such as XXJM6 and JPJK2 which are the most recent ones.
Is it possible that the firmwares are still not fully optimized for the Tab? I thought most of the hardware was almost the same across all the Galaxies? I'm just concerned that maybe my Tab is defective.
Note: Forgot to mention that Market is also very slow to load in comparison too. It's instant on the Captivate without lagfix on both devices.
Now, I have a Samsung Vibrant and a Galaxy Tab and I have to admin there is little notices such as the market slower a lil bit slower on the tab, but other then thatthe tab is over all smoother then the vibrant.
Oh and in case this ever comes up both the Vibrant and Tab I have are stock.

One thing to bear in mind is that both the Tab and Galaxy S use the same processor and GPU. However, due to the increased resolution of the Tab, it is throwing around 60% more pixels to the screen than the Galaxy S, which will certainly be a factor in any performance differential.
FWIW, I've not noticed any significant difference in speed between my Tab and my HTC Desire, and anecdotally the Desire is just as fast as the S except in gaming.
Vis-a-vis the Market - usually, the slowness of the Market is at the Google end, not the device. It may be it's just handling the fingerprint differently.

Dave
The title says it all really, but just wondering how future proof everyone sees the GT 10.1 being???
I know that no tech device these days is safe from being outdated pretty quick, but what "life span" does the GT 10.1 have taking into consideration the Tegra Chipset and its age. Also how many Android updates will be compatible in the future???

Not much. I knew that before buying it since it was purchased to replace the ipad that i had
1. Kal-el tablets are right around the corner
2. Higher res screen should be getting released early next year
3. Tegra2 isn't all that great. Not enough native codec support for multimedia
I figured I would get 12-18 months out of the GTab 10.1 before turning it over to one of my sons and getting something newer/fresher. More importantly, I am thinking I won't be buying any $2000 laptops in the near future (say 3-5 years), so the ROI is decent.

Well the battary will last you around 3 years, its still a decend product 1GB Ram and dual core 1GHz truely isnt that bad. If you can wait atleast 2 of those 3 years you can get a really nice Wayne or Logan tablet (tegra 4 & 5) which will be an extremely big upgrade. With that i bet Android 4.0 Icecream sandwich.
I'm just looking to use mine until the second round of kal el tablets are released which should be a bit more optimized than the launch devices. Tablets really aren't all that expensive imo to prohibit frequent upgrades.

If you want h264 1080p high profile video and a faster 3D gaming experience, this tablet will be out of date by early 2012.
If are looking for a great web browsing experience and productivity ... this tablet is more then fast enough. It already provides a beautiful browsing experience that is nearly as fast as a desktop.
For reading mags, browsing webpages ocasional gaming and watching films this is more than good enough.
For hardcore gaming and 1080p video its going to be out of date by end of the year.
But than again... Who on eabrth watches 1080p on 10inch screen?
What sort of games you're going to play on it?
I'm guessing that with new retina displays for tablets tegra 3 will be to weak.
Compare desire hd with 800x480 screen and xperia mini with half of that screen resolution. Scrolling and overall framerate of the system is a lot better on xperia.
Try to run any 3d game that was designed for 800x480 screen and run the same game on 1280x800 honeycomb screen. This game framerate will be a lot slower.
Apparently tegra 2 is a lot lot faster than any single core cpu on mobile device and yet it can't run games designed for smaller screens.
See the irony here?
With bigger resolution you need more processing power.
Try to run reckless gateway on any phone and run this on tablet...
My point is whatever you buy its not going to be enough. Get the galaxy tab and enjoy for next couple of years

And you can always sell the outgoing tablet to help make financial room for the new. Imo get the galaxy tab and enjoy it. Worst case scenario you can always sell and get the latest and greatest down the road. Quirks aside, I, love this device.

Based on my experience watching the same 720p video clip on the galaxy s2 and galaxy tab 10.1, i wouldn't mind a bit more resolution on the galaxy tab 10.1. In comparison to tegra2 setups on cell phones, exynos + mali400mp setup in the galaxy s2 might be more than enough to drive those resolutions (iirc, prior to the release of galaxy s2, there was a tech demo showing 1080p demo game running at 60fps on tv)

And I fully expect to see an Exynos, or Exynos Plus or Super Exynos, or Super Exynos Plus running in a Galaxy Tablet in the future. But that's, well, the future.
This is now.
I may be dead in Q1 of next year, you may be as well. Waiting more than a few weeks is a sucker bet when buying tech, especially when you're waiting for unannounced speculative products that may or may not be all you were waiting for.

Sorry but don't get me wrong.
Remember that this chip built in to the phone needs to run an os, wifi cdma other tasks at the same time. On this video you have pure chip.
Remember that demos of tegra 2 had similar presentation. 1080p on the tv 60fps and that was year a go.
I've had few apps that didn't scale right on my gtab (just tiny window) and they were running perfectly smooth whereas on my dhd I had some lag and glitches.
I just don't think that with kalel there will be so much improvement especially with retina displays
I don't have tegra 2 phone but bang bang racing on gtab/transformer never went above 30 fps, i bet any money that on smaller screen this game is smooth as butter.
Also gouriella bob, try playing normal version and thd. Tegra 2 cannot handle thd version on 10 inch screen its just not smooth enough

Don't forget the fact that SGS2 with chainfire is able to run the same games designed for Tegra with quite a bit of AA turned on(16x in some cases)
This is before we get into the media decoding capabilities builtin.
As for the demo, they did say that same thing ran in stereoscopic 1080p at 60fps which means processing two separate 1080p rendering at 60fps (it's capped to 60fps)
a year maybe!

To be honest this thing will be obsolete by the time nVidia's Kal-El releases. But I'm completely satisfied with my tab 10.1 and could care less what new specs tablets come out with later. This thing is fast enough for my needs and has better hardware than an iPad 2, albeit minus the plastic back but the metallic gray still looks cool. Before this thing came out, my only wish was for a tablet as thin as the iPad 2 but with Android instead.

I wouldn't go as far as saying tegra2 implementation is superior to ipad2's A5 + SGX543MP setup. Simply because of the fact that single core SGX540 setup is very comparable to tegra2 in a lot of ways on android side and there is no NEON support on Tegra2's A9 setup
hey guys,
so i'm looking to pick up a Galaxy Note in a few hours- done quite a bit of research as i've been very excited.
i just want to hear from people with first hand experience- if you owned a Galaxy S2 prior to the Note, was the leap really worth it? If so, why?
Thanks!

Do a search for S2 in this forum. You will find numerous threads comparing the Note to the S2. I have not read one post where someone was not happy they moved to the Note.
It is worth it. I upgraded today and I am not looking back. The Note is amazing!!! Love the HD screen. I just need to get a copy of the Netflix HD apk from the Razr.

I bought the note and its not compareable to the sgs2...
Its slower, for what reason ever (im using the lighting rom on [email protected],4ghz), if you load the same website on both for ex youtube desktop the note is much lagg a bit but much... even @ quadrant (I know its a bench but my sgs2 scores 4600 after 4months of useage the note 3400 out of the box...).
Maybe someday a custom rom will boost it up, but at the moment its ONLY BIGGER with a higher res bit greeny colorized display...

^^ that's what i feared... any other opinions or experiences? both positive and negative
i'd like some confirmation on CM7 coming over to the Note, as i've had some good experience with those ROMS on my old devices making them much more responsive.
$500 over my SGS2 just doesn't seem to be justified for a 1" bigger screen and less responsiveness... decisions, decisons...
i don't have GS2 so i can't say that its worth to upgrading or not but my note is great i could not be happier . i don't see any s pen issue (i set on right hand writing ) if i set left hand writing and using right hand with s pen then it will look a bit off like on the youtube video. and lastly i don't notice any greeny colorize .

My tweaked SGSII is faster and smoother then my SGN, stock browser and desktop mainly. Still the SGSII is shelfed since I have my Note. SGSII actually looks to small to be usable.
I have a S2, I think its worth to upgrade. I love the larger screen.
I had to go back to the S2 for a few days because my Note's screen was faulty, and it is surely no torture to use the S2, it feels smooth.
But, the Note gives a dimension to mobile computing not comparable to smaller devices like the S2 or iPhone.
I don't care for the s-pen, maybe I'll find some use it besides impressing others...
If however, your main use is calling, maybe a smaller device is more suitable...

I love the Note. LOVE it.
That said it is significantly laggy compared to my SGs2.
I figured it would be with no mods initially...but its slower than I thought it'd be.
I compare them both clocked at 1400.
The difference is the lack of exynos processor I think.
You can bridge the gdap with Launcher pro (and loose the cool tW widgets)and put scrolling settings at top speed....along with Rom Manager Pro an XDA dudes app which scripts the OS to optimize memory and speed.
So yeah surprised and dissapointed in the screen responsiveness (specially after Engadgets review (has it faster than SGS2 in all benchmarks).
Whatever...developers should have it all stepped up in a month or two.
thanks for all the replies, fellas
i'm looking forward to what's in store for the Note in the near future...

The galaxy note has the exynos processor, why do people think otherwise, i havent seen a single publication post otherwise.
I really like the note so far, those it is slightly laggy as others havee said
Useful video comparing the Note with the S2.
It's in Italian, but the video should still be easy to follow... Possibly a tiny bit more laggy on the Note in parts, but I don't see that being a long term issue. The hardware is definitely good enough. Really want to see ICS run on it. I suspect it'll fly.
An appearance of lagginess doesn't mean it's slower necessarily, right?
Could just be software inefficiencies, if I'm not wrong....
once development catches up, i'm sure it'll be on par at least
in any case, i ordered one today lol
thank you everyone for your input and opinions!

It might just be a matter of updates, but I'm fairly certain that the Galaxy Tab (the original one, which this is the forum for) has never received TouchWiz 4. Furthermore, subsequent Tabs have been Honeycomb-based, so they received TouchWiz UX (which is only a light modification).
My only other guess is whether you're asking about Android 4.0 which includes Hardware Acceleration on selected hardware. Unfortunately, that upgrade won't be coming to the Tab through official channels, so you can't be sure of acceleration support.
As for your comparison to the iPad, I find my GT-P1000 runs just as smooth as the iPad (and even the 2 most of the time) without any acceleration. It's very snappy and zooms and scrolls very smoothly for me.
The touchwiz 4 doesn't have hardware acceleration. Only the firmware Ice Cream Sandwich has this feature. I have the hope that one day we can enjoy of ICS in our Galaxy Tab. It works so good!!!!!

Unless the app calls for it, is not 3d and the user has the force gpu setting on in the.dev settings of ICS, apps arent HW accelled, only the UI.

To clear up the confusion:
The standard Galaxy Tab does not include TouchWiz 4
Honeycomb-based Tabs feature TouchWiz UX and therefore also do not include TW4
Stock Ice Cream Sandwich features HW acceleration on the OS only, not in the apps
The Galaxy Tab has no official ICS update at this time, and therefore will be unlikely to get HW acceleration.
The matter of performance comparison to the iPad is a wholly personal preference and depends on what you're doing on the device.
Remember also that the Galaxy Tab is a 1 and a half year old portable device and is therefore not in the same performance league as newer 10" dual-core models.

It's not about confusion, it's about users demanding way to much from the gadgets they have... That"s a discussion that will live as long as there are gadgets. Remeber the 3D-class-act-hype on HTC's Tytn II , the Kaiser...
People should learn to live with what they get for the money they want to spend....

Always seem mildly dissapointed with the Notes screen responsiveness and panel/app movement speed. Been a while but pulled out the GSII... Both on 1.4mz...SGS2 on GB launcher Pro. Note on ICS (Stunner) Apex launcher. Both with cache and dalvik cleared w/reboot......and..
SGS2 just significantly faster opening apps, switching launcher panels etc. Screen itself on the SGSII just seems hypersensitive to the touch compared to the Note which almost requires a little bit of pressure. The Notes not 'slow' perse...but compared to simultaneous touch tests with my SGSII it seems slow. Was kind of surprised at the extent.
Guess it is what it is with larger screens huh?
I'd imagine my pre rooted Note was faster also...can't remember or compare.
its not the size of the screen that is the issue.
its the resolution.
galaxy s2 = 800 x 480 = 384000 pixels on the screen at any given time
galaxy note = 1280 x 800 = 1024000 pixels on the screen at any given time
it has to render 2.66 times as many pixels at any given time with the same GPU. if you have any experience at all with computers, you'll know its the same thing. run need for speed shift 2 at 640x480 on max settings with a gtx580, and you'll get 300-400fps. run it at 2560x1600 on max settings with the same gtx580 and you'll get 60fps if youre lucky.
dont expect that the note can magically perform just as well at the same clock speed when it is under 166% more stress at any given time compared to the s2. its expected to be slower.
I hear this a lot but I personally dont notice it..I have switched my ex wife,gf and her daughter all over to the SGS2 and none of them seem any faster then my Note.
As a matter of fact, I have a 9100 in front of me running Hydrogen ICS and it just embarrasses the Note. I love my Note but that is the truth.
EDIT - But then again, Kernel sources have been released for the S2.
In my opinion the Note with original rom is absolutely slower than the GS2. Flashing Stunner rom is THE solution! Pretty close to Iphone 4s experience.
I admit that i would have expected my note a bit faster, but i think the resolution is the cause. Fir me the best thing to do is to wait the ics official rom, which sould ensure higher performances, ar least i hope so
Thanks. That's right. Appreciate.
I look forward to over clocking on ICS
Stock when released.
QUOTE=Souai;25209788]its not the size of the screen that is the issue.
its the resolution.
galaxy s2 = 800 x 480 = 384000 pixels on the screen at any given time

i used to think the same thing, but using the CM9 ROM and go launcher has sped things up considerably- no more lag on my home screen- i can even use effects without them mucking up!
For everyone who expects something for nothing, please read post #2
A good friend of mine got a SGSII after giving his Nokia N8 to his wife,I helped him with updates and installation of couple of application.since he was a complete Android newbi.
Will try to make an speed test tomorrow,as both of our devices are stock and unrooted.
My epic 4g touch running Caulkin's rom under clocked at 1ghz and undervolted still feels faster then CM9 on my note. But the note is still fast enough for me. I'm more interested in battery life then performance.
Having tested the latest Stunner release, I take back my words. The Note is on par with the S2 I have with me!

It is also worth noting that the Note will likely have less available memory available for applications than the GS II, given that they both have 1GB RAM, and the Note's frame buffer is going to be 2.66 times the size of the GSII's frame buffer too.

Dave
I have had my GS2 for almost a year now with heavy daily use, it has had every rom under the sun that is worth flashing, flashed.
Without a doubt, my new note is considerably slower but its expected, and its not slow enough to be a bother.

note does have less free ram. on my brother's s2 running gingerbread, he averages 550mb free ram. my note running gingerbread has around 300mb free ram average. its quite noticeable when i run a beefy game, most other apps shut down and i have to wait for the desktop to reload all widgets and icons when i exit a beefy game.
Thats right, with the devices side by side I see a total of almost 900MB Free/Used on the GS2 while the total on my note closer to 750MB.
One of the first things I do when rooting is to remove all the samsung apps from system that run and waste ram. Usually a good start.

I agree. I owned a SG2 before I bought the Note and the SG2 is definitely more zippier than the Note.
But, I wouldn't exchange my Note for a SG2 anymore. I just love this beautiful, big screen !
so you are comparing a fully optomised sgs2 against a leaked ics version of the note?
Having used an SGSII for 6 months as my daily driver , then sold it for the note I can give you my observations:
1.S2 is faster than the note ,and has more ram ,but then again the S2 was smoother than my freind's iphone4 so I guess the note being slightly slower doesn't make it bad ,but makes the S2 a phenomena
2. screen colour of the S2 are better and don't have gamma corruption or black clipping as on the note.
3.the note's screen is much sharper than the S2 , and much larger.
4. Audio quality of the note is higher than the S2 , volume level of the spreaker is lower on the note though , headphones volume levels are the same or slightly higher on the note.
5.battery endurance of the note is 150% higher than the S2.
6.GPS of the note is a phenomena , and puts the S2 to shame.
Overall the note is pretty good and I can't imagine myself using a 4"smartphone again.
I really miss my Galaxy S2.
I only sold it because the headset jack wasn't working. I really should have replaced it with another S2.
