[Q] Omnia 7 signal issue - Omnia 7 General

Hi guys,
Does anyone know how can I improve my phone's signal? Sometimes it's very low, or oscilating between 1 and 2 bars. This happens at home, at my office, in closed areas mostly. But it's not a network issue, because I have friends on the same network but with different phones and they don't have this problem. I think it might be some code that I can use in the diagnostics screen to improve my signal, but not sure if I'm right.
Thank you.

The later firmwares solves some of the reception problems with the Omnia 7, but it still is a bad phone when it comes to reception and general HW design, unfortunately...

We should complain to Sony about weak signal.

I email Sony a complain about weak signal and this is what I got in respond:
Thank you for contacting Sony Ericsson Xperia Support.
We don't have a list of the newest updates for this phone, but I have heard nothing of your issue before, it is worth trying a reset if there is no update available.
Try resetting the hardware. To do this, hold down the two keys on the front with silver "-" signs. While you are pressing them, take the stylus and press the reset button through the top opening through the casing of the stylus.
What I also suggest is resetting the phone software via "Clear Storage".
To do this, select Start icon, then Settings, then tap the System tab. You will see Clear Storage in the top right corner.
1. The Sony Ericsson Update Service is a free download that can be found at www.sonyericsson.com, after you click on "Support" and then choose your phone model.
2. Select your country and region.
3. Under the section titled”Software and Set Up” choose, “Sony Ericsson Update Service”.
4. Download the application to your computer and install the program.
Once you have installed the program and run it, it will give you instructions on how to install it on the computer and how to run it on the phone afterwards. Please make sure the phone and the USB cable are not connected to the PC throughout the installation process. The Update Service is meant to update the software on the phone.
If you require more information, or have any other questions, please visit our website at SonyEricsson.com/X1 or call us at 1-877-7XPERIA.
Dunno what's going on here, I can't complaint: my reception is GREAT in both X1a and X1i
You should start a poll on this thread
1- Reception GREAT
2- Reception OK but...
3- Reception SUCKS
Reception good / great here... 2/4 bars of HDSPA all around my town...
signal is temprmental. i am not sure it is down to the phone though

Same for me..
Compared to my Motorola Q9h Global, my Xperia X1a (and my Nokia E71-2) appear to have fewer bars in the same place.
I don't want to insult anybody by suggesting that this is the case, but I hope we're not assuming that the Xperia has poor RF signal capture just because it's not showing as many bars as another device.
In my part of the world there is a notorious dead zone between Culpeper VA and Orange VA. There are very few phones that can hold an AT&T signal through this zero-bar signal area, and the Xperia is one of them.
reception is just OK. my n95 usualy has a far better signal then my x1. @ least thats for UMTS signals. GSM is fine with both.
probaly a problem of the Metal case

I'll second that, my N95 8GB has a better signal strength than my Xperia, i have owned a few Win mob devices in the past and they have all had poor reception compared to The Nokias i had at the time.
Done blame SE.. its a matter of fone operators.
nup, reception is much worse on the x1 than my k800i.
with my old phone I could get a little bit of reception at work (thick walls, no windows, lots of machinery..)
but I rarely get a signal now with the x1.. (and am unable to make calls, or they drop out half way through)
(and I am with the same provider)
But signal bars don't really represent how much signal you get. Making calls and it not dropping are the key factors you need to compare with.
Yes, however having comparison with SE P1, and my HP laptop with ExpressCard,
all on the same operator,
X1 is a bit weeker on reception.
Im also having same problem with signal on o2 in the uk, my blackbbery bold is fine, but x1 normally shows 1/2 bars
Really? Well here in montreal we have a tunnel, the Louis-Hyppolite Lafontaine tunnel. This tunnel is a dead zone, of course, but on a strong enough phone you get a link until nearly at the middle. With my X1, I got signal from start to end, the only other phones that I saw capable of doing this are the blod and E71.
Even if in my phone I see 3 bars, the signal is still very strong. Well maybe the X1 has better sensitivity, that would explain why you see 2 bars on the SE, when, conversely, you see 4 on a motorola.
X1 definitely has serious reception problem.
I am not taking about the number of bars but off and on signal are comepltely gone and it will start searching for a network.
I have tested this by putting the phone on the table and by observing the signals bars over a long period of time. Often I have noticed full signal bars and many time there are not signals at all.
Service is weak in my area but none of my pervious mobiles have shown such a poor reception.
My reception is just ridiculously bad!(I live in the Netherlands, Utrecht)
When I'm on MSN or browsing the web, or even when I'm SMS'ing,
the signal just drops. It's really starting to bug me!
I dont even have a connection when I'm on the bathroom @home..
I've noticed that it seems to be more due to the issue of HSDPA. It'll lose signal with HSDPA but then it'll connect with full bars of the older GPRS. In my opinion this would indicate that the service provider (vodafone) is the issue, not the phone.
I think another issue is that the radio antenna is actually part of the metal battery cover. If you take it off and turn the cover over you can see 4 exposed pieces of metal, I assume these are just that. Perhaps the signal you receive is so poor that even your hand covering the antenna is blocking it.
Here are the results of a hard comparison:
three (3) different devices -
HTC Polaris P3650 (ie. the 1st one)
SE X1 with radio ROM 1.11.25.76
Acer DX900
I used the same SIM card in all three in exactly the same marginal signal area (same verandah) in succession (total swap time to all three was about 10 minutes, no sudden electrical storms, weather fine and clear)
Both the Polaris and the DX900 easily found enough signal to work directly after boot with both HSDPA and GSM
The X1 obdurately stayed dumb and stupid, although it works OK in high signal areas
Conclusion: the X1 is useless in marginal signal areas. I suspect the aluminium case. It works fine if you never leave the city areas. When combined with the original underpowered battery, I now regard the X1 as an expensive toy ... pity, as it has lots of grunt (CPU, RAM, storage, resolution, GPS) but I'm simply not in the design market demographic.
I've tried 4 different radio ROM's now in the X1. WiFi, BT, GPS are excellent. GSM/GPRS and UMTS are hopeless in marginal signal areas.

GSM Signal weak in Prophet after update. Pls help.....

I had purchased a second hand o2 xda neo. It had wm 5 on it . I updates it with wm 6.1 roms available here.I find that the gsm reception is very poor inside my home.I dont know whether this happened after the update. In my office it is quite good. Even when I am outside i have no problem. Only in my home the signal is very weak. can this be corrected by some registry tweaks or some software. or is it a hardware problem. and if so can i get it repaired. pls help...
what rom are you using and what radio was recommended for use with it. Sounds like a radio issue to me but plz tell me rom and radio. you can experiment using different radios found on the wiki to see whatworks best.
you can flash different radios without loosing data on the device.
I have tried with 2.19, 2.47, 2.69 roms. but no effect. I am trying today 2.07 let me see if that helps. Does IPL/SPL effect the singnal strength?
mmm it might be just one of those things, in that there is interferance within your house (my house is made from granite so reception is very poor), if recpetion is good elsewhere it is unlikely to be radio.
Is there 3G network there? The quality of service on 3G can be unpredictable at best of times.
Signal is not effected by IPL/SPL to my knowledge.
The results of 2.07.20 radio rom. It shows good signal but i feel that it does not update it when the signal is poor. In my office signal is good. So it showed full strength. I went home. There too it showed full strength. when i did soft rest to clear my doubt the signal was poor as in previous roms. Do you think that the antenna has some problem. Can it be replaced. i find an opening above the mirror( near the camers lens) for car antenna. Can this help? if so how?. 3G network is not available in my country(INDIA)
hey,
i think u might have to accept that the signal is just crap in your house... a bummer i know, but if youve tried various radios and signal is good elsewhere, it cant be the internal ariel.
have u tried flashing another rom, more recent build?
Not sure it will help but you never know... at the end of the day, signal is never constant in any one place.
But friend. The signal is good in other phones. If the signal is crap then it should affect other phones too.
I should have also said that the signal is never constant betwenn too phones in the same place. It depends on antenna hardware and the location of it, like signal is reduced whislt making a call if you place your hand and fingers in the wrong place.
I think it unlikely that is a hardware issue if your signal is fine in other areas. Sorry my friend i dont know what else to suggest having tried radios and roms.
The prophet is getting a little long in the tooth now, so be time for an update?

Radio Problems ?

Hi,
I have my legend from 3 week s now, and very pleased with it... I has a Hero before and happy to play now with Android 2.1... However... I'm a little bit disapointed with the quality of my network signal nd some other bug that I hadn't on my hero...
Problems...
Wifi signal and Network GSM signal often bad or lower quality than previously... Is that normal and know for future dev...
Browser often doesn't load the Internet page when signal is not good and stop working or show the error loading message, and even if my signal is ok...
So basically my radio version is...
47.26.35.04U_7.05.35.26L
2.6.29-9a3026a7
Build 1.23.405.1 CL139791
Can you help me, is a new rom or radio planned for soon...
thx

did you compare the performance of your Legend with another phone?
my Legend is underperforming compare to my HTC Cruise, but I'm using H3G here in Italy, running only on 3G network.
Sent from my HTC Legend using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
No i do not compare I juste have problem qith signal quality at all... And yes compared to my hero, it is worst...
Same here, bad WiFi or Edge/3G performance compared with my iPhone 3GS or some other phones I've tested (at the exact same location).
Sent from my HTC Legend using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
I haven't tested my Legend side-by-side with other phones, but I have an overall feeling that my old HTC Magic was more stable wrt GSM/3G networking.
The main problem for me is that quite often Legend cannot keep connections/phone calls alive when switching between EDGE and 3G networks. I've never had such problems with Magic (on the same operator, Swisscom in my case).
I'm not sure if this happens because of weaker reception, a bug in the Legend's radio, or some sort of incompatibility with my operator's network. (The old Magic was Swisscom-branded, so maybe it was tweaked for Swisscom in some way).
same here
I can confirm radio is generally weak with Legend. It loses GSM/3G connection completely in places where my previous phones (HTC Snap & Magic) were showing weak signal but were still holding connection. Same goes with Wi Fi unfortunately. My conclusion: Legend's radio is weaker compared to other phones. Don't get me wrong - you may never experience any problems if GSM/3G/Wi Fi signal is strong in your areas of inhabbitance. But in my case (work phone - so got to be reachable 24/7) it looks like Legend has Failed.
I've had a magic, hero and nexus one before the legend, and for me the legend seems weaker than hero/magic (which are the same in my experience) but MUCH better than the nexs one.#
Overall the legend has been ok though, the only annoying thing I've experienced is when I go into a no signal area (e.g. underground) and come back, it sometimes doesn't pick up a signal again and stays on no network until I switch off and on. Annoying if it's in your pocket and you've not noticed for a while...
Bad Wifi
I've had the Legend for 2 days now and I'm experiencing severe problems with radio.
Specifically wifi:
* Signal on Legend is VERY low compared to Hero
* I'm also loosing connection all the time, where my Hero was extremely stable
* Problem is worse when I'm using my laptop's wifi at the same time
- When laptop is turned off, wifi is somewhat stable on the Legend, when I'm surfing the web on my laptop AND using wifi on the Legend, I seem to have problems with both. I loose connection on the Legend and wifi on laptop is very slow. When Legend wifi is off, I have no problem whatsoever.
* I sometimes have problems accessing Market, Browser and other apps that require net access.
* Switching between wifi and 3G/Edge seems slow and doesn't always work
I AM comparing the Hero and Legend at the same time. I have no problem with Hero and Laptop running at the same time, only Legend and laptop!
Edit: I now about "early adopter syndrome" where they release something before it's finished. BUT this really isn't a new product in that respect, it's supposed to be an improvement. I did not get the Legend for this hassle. If it persists and nothing is gained from my email to HTC, I'm returning it as a defect product.
Can someone expert here give us more info about this and future dev or problem source ? As for me Even if I like the legend I can not understand how they can launch a device giving lower result that it's previous version : the htc hero... ???
Sooooo, Hero radio is ok and get's good signal strength........Hero is made of plastic. Legend radio is weak, drops connection a lot....Legend is made of aluminum. Is it possible that we will never get good reception on the Legend, that it's not a bug, but a weakness with the metal used. Like The first iPhone......and why they are doing glass/ceramic back in the 4G iPhone....
Just asking...I have the Legend as well if you think I'm dissing the Legend here.
nexus one is plastic and from my experience has considerably worse signal strength
The problem for me is more on the wifi reception even if signal is 3/4 I experience a lot of time error in the internet browser, and it become unusefull...
I juste ahad a reply from the HTC support and SO PLEASE SEND THEM A REQUEST IF YOU EXPERIENCE THE SAME PROBLEM as they told me not too much people 've reported actually this problem so they can not sent the development to the dev team...
"New Response
Dear Thank you for your enquiry about htc legend. We regret but as far as we are concern there is not known issue on htc legend regarding the radio and wifi. Once we have a big number of customers with a similar case then we will report this issue to our developers in order to create an update, but currently we do not have enough of examples. If these steps have not helped, please let me know by responding using the link provided and I will be happy to check again for you. Best regards, Ivona HTC customer support team HTC Corp. FM Radio depends on your headphones/earphones since it uses that wire as an antenna.
I don't have anything to compare against, though I am pretty disappointed with the wifi reception... Does it use the ring around the camera lens as the antenna?
Has anyone tried WiFi Fixer?
I've been told that the Legend has trouble with Dlink routers. I have a Dlink 825 and my Hero had no trouble with this router. But with the Legend, I'm experiencing dropped signals and interference with my Laptop connection when the Legend is connected as well. My friend then replaced the same router with a Zyxel one and has full coverage.
Im having the same issues..even when i have strong wifi signal, it often cannot connect to anything and I have to turn wifi off and on. (netgear router)
I also have issues with 3G, the signal is all over the place...when other phones have a good signal, sometimes when i come from standby the signal is gone completely (showing a 'x' on the signal bar), this is in the middle of the city with strong signal from all other phones!
I have turned off 3G and using only GSM and have not had problems since.

well compared to my cowon S9 radio which is perfect the legend is useless. yes i know that its related to the headphones but if a pair of Q-Jays isnt good enough than i dont know what is
as for the internal recievers i have started to have a problem with the mobile data connection. even in a strong location it just doesnt recieve im betting its a software issue tho cause it reads full strength and still does it sometimes a reset of the phone makes it work again but it will randomly cut off after its been on for a while
No problems with wi-fi here (whereas my TP2 sometimes struggles to initially connect) but the GSM radio performance is below what my TP2 gets in the same location. GPRS is possible however. Don't have 3G signal here.
Not sure whether this indicates a big problem as have only had Legend for 1 day but have seen "emergency calls only" quite a few times It kinda comes and goes.
Having said that, the TP2 was a bit flakey here (all mobile network signals aren't great here at home) until the 4.xx.xx.91 radio ROM upgrade, now it's better. (started on 3.something, whatever Voda initially released the 6.1 TP2 with ... I forget tbh)
Hopefully we will see a radio upgrade.

[Q] Connectivity Problems: Nexus 4 on WindMobile Canada

I went through the forum and couldn't find any solution, so I decided to post it here and hoping for somebody to help:
There're 3 problems/issues:
1. The phone does not always show "H"(HSPA+) for data. It usually shows "3G", and when you try to access internet, after some 10 secs, it turns to "H". This is for when you are standing still in a location with good signal coverage.
2. When I'm in a moving car, the data speed gets really slow. Takes forever to load up xda for instance. Most of the time "3G" is shown. Sometimes "H"(HSPA+) appears for a random but generally short time period.
3. When moving out and in to Wind signal coverage, it takes very long for the phone to connect to Wind's service.
----------------------
Now don't tell me this is all because of Wind has bad signal, because if I put my sim card back to my old HTC amaze, none of the 3 issues above appears.
I know it's a known issue that Wind and Nexus 4 together has a problem, but I'm really looking for a solution to this as N4 is a really nice phone with Wind's unlimited data on it.
Someone help plz!!!!!!!:fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:
-------------
BTW. I called Wind customer support today and they give me no helpful solutions. They also admit that although they are officially offering the Nexus 4, they have no custom tweak on the radio/modem of the phone.
------------
update: since the phone stays on 3G when there's no internet loading, it's probably saving battery this way. But with Wind's poor network, it's better to always be on "H".....is there a way to do that?
same problem
When we first got on WIND eaarlier this year we needed to get a new sim card to fix reception issues so you may wantt to see if that's part of your issue? Wife's Google Nexus 4 iwas purchased right form tehgoogle store and is not modded in any way.
I don't know if it's the area I'm in (Burlington near upper middle and bronte creek) but reception on the Wind network is spotty at best. And it almost seems as if form Jan. 2013 to now it's gotten worse at my house.
We have the same problem on my son's LG Optimus 4X HD as my wifes Google Nexus 4 so maybe it's just winds coverage in certain areas?
If there's any mod. I can do to improve the crappy signal from WIND I would love it because right now we are shopping for a different carrier due to the reception problems.
I had a friend using Solavei with similar issues. Tried a new SIM card, same issue.
Eventually got a replacement from Play Store, solved issue - was a defect in first phone. The Play Store has great support.
Details like which ROM/build would be helpful. Which modems you've tried, etc.

[Q] Reception problems

I am on my third replacement because of reception/connectivity issues, the signal appears to be strong but placing your hand around the back of the phone at the bottom causes the signal to degrade significantly also network data is very touch and go. I can be in the middle of town with a perfect HSPA signal and get very mediocre results sometimes it just doesn't work at all. I have tried three replacement SIMs, changing the GSM voice codecs, flashing different baseband radio firmwares all with no positive results. I also tried my partners SIM which is on a different network and had the same problem. I'm just starting to think that the antenna design is not very good and has low-gain characteristics, although that wouldn't explain why the connection is still unstable despite the baseband reporting a strong signal.
Another problems is absolutely terrible call quality, there is lots of white noise in the background, speech is distorted sometimes, pops, clicks, and just general instability. I've read so many different threads on many forums with people describing the same issues, and they too went through many replacement handsets and different SIM cards.
Please someone tell me there is a fix for this or it is at least a known issue otherwise I'm going to return this POS and get the Galaxy S4 instead. My previous phone SGS3 was great with reception! Bah! I'll cast it to Davey Jone's locker... release the kraken!!

You can try setting your phone to LTE only.
Type in dialer:
3845#*802#,then the secret menu will come up...Then:
1. Go to LTE-Only
2. Modem Settings
3. RAT Selection
4. Select GSM / WCDMA / LTE auto or what ever selection you want
Job done...
P.S If you have another D80x just enter your model number instead " X " in dialer etc: 3845#*802 or 803 or xxxxxx (not my work BTW)
Or seriously consider changing phones.
I've had fantastic reception on my vs980 but maybe your area vs. Carrier vs signal just isn't going to cut it.
Sorry man, love this phone way more than the s4... The s4 sure is pretty though.
