Radio Problems ? - Legend General

Hi,
I have my legend from 3 week s now, and very pleased with it... I has a Hero before and happy to play now with Android 2.1... However... I'm a little bit disapointed with the quality of my network signal nd some other bug that I hadn't on my hero...
Problems...
Wifi signal and Network GSM signal often bad or lower quality than previously... Is that normal and know for future dev...
Browser often doesn't load the Internet page when signal is not good and stop working or show the error loading message, and even if my signal is ok...
So basically my radio version is...
47.26.35.04U_7.05.35.26L
2.6.29-9a3026a7
Build 1.23.405.1 CL139791
Can you help me, is a new rom or radio planned for soon...
thx

did you compare the performance of your Legend with another phone?
my Legend is underperforming compare to my HTC Cruise, but I'm using H3G here in Italy, running only on 3G network.
Sent from my HTC Legend using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk

No i do not compare I juste have problem qith signal quality at all... And yes compared to my hero, it is worst...

Same here, bad WiFi or Edge/3G performance compared with my iPhone 3GS or some other phones I've tested (at the exact same location).
Sent from my HTC Legend using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk

I haven't tested my Legend side-by-side with other phones, but I have an overall feeling that my old HTC Magic was more stable wrt GSM/3G networking.
The main problem for me is that quite often Legend cannot keep connections/phone calls alive when switching between EDGE and 3G networks. I've never had such problems with Magic (on the same operator, Swisscom in my case).
I'm not sure if this happens because of weaker reception, a bug in the Legend's radio, or some sort of incompatibility with my operator's network. (The old Magic was Swisscom-branded, so maybe it was tweaked for Swisscom in some way).

same here
I can confirm radio is generally weak with Legend. It loses GSM/3G connection completely in places where my previous phones (HTC Snap & Magic) were showing weak signal but were still holding connection. Same goes with Wi Fi unfortunately. My conclusion: Legend's radio is weaker compared to other phones. Don't get me wrong - you may never experience any problems if GSM/3G/Wi Fi signal is strong in your areas of inhabbitance. But in my case (work phone - so got to be reachable 24/7) it looks like Legend has Failed.

I've had a magic, hero and nexus one before the legend, and for me the legend seems weaker than hero/magic (which are the same in my experience) but MUCH better than the nexs one.#
Overall the legend has been ok though, the only annoying thing I've experienced is when I go into a no signal area (e.g. underground) and come back, it sometimes doesn't pick up a signal again and stays on no network until I switch off and on. Annoying if it's in your pocket and you've not noticed for a while...

Bad Wifi
I've had the Legend for 2 days now and I'm experiencing severe problems with radio.
Specifically wifi:
* Signal on Legend is VERY low compared to Hero
* I'm also loosing connection all the time, where my Hero was extremely stable
* Problem is worse when I'm using my laptop's wifi at the same time
- When laptop is turned off, wifi is somewhat stable on the Legend, when I'm surfing the web on my laptop AND using wifi on the Legend, I seem to have problems with both. I loose connection on the Legend and wifi on laptop is very slow. When Legend wifi is off, I have no problem whatsoever.
* I sometimes have problems accessing Market, Browser and other apps that require net access.
* Switching between wifi and 3G/Edge seems slow and doesn't always work
I AM comparing the Hero and Legend at the same time. I have no problem with Hero and Laptop running at the same time, only Legend and laptop!
Edit: I now about "early adopter syndrome" where they release something before it's finished. BUT this really isn't a new product in that respect, it's supposed to be an improvement. I did not get the Legend for this hassle. If it persists and nothing is gained from my email to HTC, I'm returning it as a defect product.

Can someone expert here give us more info about this and future dev or problem source ? As for me Even if I like the legend I can not understand how they can launch a device giving lower result that it's previous version : the htc hero... ???

Sooooo, Hero radio is ok and get's good signal strength........Hero is made of plastic. Legend radio is weak, drops connection a lot....Legend is made of aluminum. Is it possible that we will never get good reception on the Legend, that it's not a bug, but a weakness with the metal used. Like The first iPhone......and why they are doing glass/ceramic back in the 4G iPhone....
Just asking...I have the Legend as well if you think I'm dissing the Legend here.

nexus one is plastic and from my experience has considerably worse signal strength

The problem for me is more on the wifi reception even if signal is 3/4 I experience a lot of time error in the internet browser, and it become unusefull...
I juste ahad a reply from the HTC support and SO PLEASE SEND THEM A REQUEST IF YOU EXPERIENCE THE SAME PROBLEM as they told me not too much people 've reported actually this problem so they can not sent the development to the dev team...
"New Response
Dear Thank you for your enquiry about htc legend. We regret but as far as we are concern there is not known issue on htc legend regarding the radio and wifi. Once we have a big number of customers with a similar case then we will report this issue to our developers in order to create an update, but currently we do not have enough of examples. If these steps have not helped, please let me know by responding using the link provided and I will be happy to check again for you. Best regards, Ivona HTC customer support team HTC Corp. FM Radio depends on your headphones/earphones since it uses that wire as an antenna.
I don't have anything to compare against, though I am pretty disappointed with the wifi reception... Does it use the ring around the camera lens as the antenna?

Has anyone tried WiFi Fixer?

I've been told that the Legend has trouble with Dlink routers. I have a Dlink 825 and my Hero had no trouble with this router. But with the Legend, I'm experiencing dropped signals and interference with my Laptop connection when the Legend is connected as well. My friend then replaced the same router with a Zyxel one and has full coverage.

Im having the same issues..even when i have strong wifi signal, it often cannot connect to anything and I have to turn wifi off and on. (netgear router)
I also have issues with 3G, the signal is all over the place...when other phones have a good signal, sometimes when i come from standby the signal is gone completely (showing a 'x' on the signal bar), this is in the middle of the city with strong signal from all other phones!
I have turned off 3G and using only GSM and have not had problems since.

well compared to my cowon S9 radio which is perfect the legend is useless. yes i know that its related to the headphones but if a pair of Q-Jays isnt good enough than i dont know what is
as for the internal recievers i have started to have a problem with the mobile data connection. even in a strong location it just doesnt recieve im betting its a software issue tho cause it reads full strength and still does it sometimes a reset of the phone makes it work again but it will randomly cut off after its been on for a while

No problems with wi-fi here (whereas my TP2 sometimes struggles to initially connect) but the GSM radio performance is below what my TP2 gets in the same location. GPRS is possible however. Don't have 3G signal here.
Not sure whether this indicates a big problem as have only had Legend for 1 day but have seen "emergency calls only" quite a few times It kinda comes and goes.
Having said that, the TP2 was a bit flakey here (all mobile network signals aren't great here at home) until the 4.xx.xx.91 radio ROM upgrade, now it's better. (started on 3.something, whatever Voda initially released the 6.1 TP2 with ... I forget tbh)
Hopefully we will see a radio upgrade.

TYTN - Weak WIFI Signal

Hello All,
I am wondering if you can help. I have a Linksys N router at home which is supposed to be 4x the area of coverage from a g. It is in my basement and the signal in my bedrooms is very weak. I purchased a Linksys signal booster and plugged on the first floor to repeat the signal to the bedrooms.
Here is the problem: I use my TYTN on the first floor close to the basement window and the signal is ok but when I move farther on the first floor the signal becomes very weak - not to mention how weak it is upstairs in the bedrooms.
I tried it with my Univeral and it is a killer full bar signal. This leads me to believe it is either my wifi is busted on my TYNT in terms of reception or they have very weak WIFI antenas. Can someone confirm if they have a similar problem?
Thanks,
Gilbert
yes i think there is a problem with the signal
he is very weak!

At least it got better WiFi-signal than the Wizard...
Change the mode to 'best performance' and try again.

I don't know about Universal, but I have a BlueAngel and it doesn't have better wifi signal than Hermes. Hermes a lot better for me, mine is an HTC TyTN (WWE) #628.
FWIW I have both Blue Angel and Wizard devices -- the Wizard's WiFi is far superior to the BA. The BA can barely pick up the signal for my office network, but the Wizard can connect to it from outside.
You should try to adjust the battery vs. performance slider in wifi settings
and report if the signal is stronger then.
I haventh had the opportunity to test the wlan yet myself.
Guys, i have use ALL HTC devices so far and i can surely say that their wifi chipsets in terms of signal strength is totally crap( i have made lots of tests comparing to other PDA brands).
I haven't used an HTC Hermes so far but i am afraid( judging from your saying) that the problem still persists.
I've done a quick test: opened wififofum on BlueAngel and Hermes, and walked around the house.
BA found 13APs, while TyTN found 22. At some point BA was seeing 7/13 while TyTN 11/22.
So, TyTN is far superior
Well here is the deal.
I tried my universal in my bedroom and it has full bar and then tried it with my Tytn and it has one bar!!!!!
I have a linksys N router in my basement and a signal booster in the first floor and this is adquate to boost the signal to my second floor bedrooms. But instead, all other devices have excellent reception but my tytn has one or two bars to the max when i put it in best performance mode. I am running a surge on wifi signals in my house and it is still weak.
WTF

Sorry If I'm kinda jumping or hijack this thread. Although this thread I guess is better than I start a new thread. My Prophet also sucks when receiving WIFI signals. I have an Alpine, an 02 Zinc, a nintendo DS, a laptop. dudes, my prophet couldn't even receive signal on the next room adjacent to where my router is. but for everything else in my devices, it can go as far as outside my house. probably 15meters away from the wifi, but can still browse. my prophhet can only receive wifi signals if i put my phropet besides the router itself. then slowly moving away but not exceeding 10 FEET. I mean what the hell is the wlan for if it ain't going further than 10 eet from the router. in my devices here's from the farthest to the weakest:
1. My Laptop of course: can still watch youtube outside the house.
2. My Alpine: dudes the signal rocks! even thru my inside gates.
3. My Zinc: slightly nearer than my alpine.
4. My NDS: kinda halfway than my Alpine.
5. My Prophet: worse: you should be beside the router. then why i don't i just open my dang PC and browse from it.
I have all these device with me.
for about sometime I also had the nokia n91. wifi signal's pretty good too. I just sold it out since when browsing heavy sites, the explorer turns off. I freakinly hate my prophet for it's ridiculous wifi connection. Currently I'm flashing all available rom there is just to test my WIFI reception. Hope you guys observe my tests. thanks!
What I want to say is that the wifi singnal has matters with the barrier in the space and the network condition itself. Beside that ,I made a test before, the wifi singal on WM6.1 was better than WM6.Maybe you can try to update your OS version.

frustrated with hd2 losing signal

I have trying to use the HD2 over the last 3 days and getting real problems with intermittent signal loss.
I know i have low signal from the mobile operator in some parts of my home but that has never been a problem with other HTC phones i used before. If the signal was too weak it would just drop out but come back if i moved a bit.
With the HD2 once the signal indicator turns red it stays that way even if i move to a strong signal area.
The weird thing is sometimes i would leave the phone sitting in one place with four bars and then minutes later it would show up with no signal and i can't receive calls.
Even stranger is that in all these cases where there is no apparent signal, all i need to do is press the send button to try making a call and the signal "magically" re-appears and all is fine. I've tried at least four differnt radios as well as the energy ROM ... no change.
Any ideas ? this is reaallly frustrating!!!!!!
do the problems resemble what I experienced here?:

change radio ROM, well experiment with several of them by trial and error (read the sticky/tutorial first).
OR
buy an indoor signal booster.
Well, regardless of the radio version ive had really odd intermitant service.
the best way ive found to help this is turn off 3G / HSDPA
Doing this forces the device to remain on GPRS, it means the battery lasts a hell of a lot longer and it doent drop the connection every time the device feels like trying to connect with HSDPA or drops it for no apparent reason.

it seem that you were losing data connection .... i'm a lot worse off ... i lose data AND voice .. all connectivity ... so i don't receive calls
as i said the weird thing is as soon as press send to initiate a call, cthe signal bars come back and everything works fine!!
as i said, stop 3G from working, when switching between the two due to what ever reason the HD2 decides to drop it will kill your connection, voice and all until it switches back. there is an issue with 3G and im wondering if its everyone or just folk using TMOUS radio and thus recieving the extra RAM
To disable 3G/HSDPA to test,
Open Comm Manager and click on Phone (not the on/off switch) to go to phone options. Scroll to bottom and select BAND. Switch network type from Auto to GSM.
3G/HSDPA is only needed for internet surfing. Time, weather, stock updates and email downloads don't really benefit from it. So turning it off this way will make these type data connections go through the EDGE network which is plenty fast enough for it. When you need to surf the net, go back and switch it to Auto and you will get 3G or faster speeds for that.

If its just 3G then its probable just T-Mobile or then again a Hardware/Firmware issue
try a different ROM, Radio
I have this same issue I running a T-Mobile USA (using radio 2.12 but then again it was doing it on 2.15 as well) and it just drops all connectivity and says no service I have to search the network again.
My phone is unlocked I don't know if that might have anything to do with it as well
I've had this problem on my HD2 since i got it.
Edge (E), works but slow as all get out. 2-4s ping times or time outs. 3G (and when i say 3G i mean when it says 3G in the status bar) doesn't work at all. HSDPA (H) works great, WHEN it stays that way, which it doesn't.
It can switch between 3G to H every 10 seconds.
And i'm using it for tethering primarily, which makes working painful. Lose your VPN and SSH sessions constantly. Some days it's ok. But most, horrible. btw, i'm in the Denver area.
I've tried stock roms and custom roms (primarily Energy). All radios. Nothing fixes it!
This is the only thing I don't like about my HD2 and/or t-mobile. And it's a whopper. I'm almost ready to get another phone or carrier, depending on what's causing this.

I have 4 HD2's with one having the problem you describe and have come to the conclusion it's a hardware issue. Probably a cold solder joint on the antenna lead.
In WinMo or Android the signal bars jump all over the place but the signal level in 'about phone' shows a constant signal even though the bars show nothing. I don't drop to many calls but miss more than a few incoming. I travel for 5-8 hrs in the same area everyday and very familiar of good and bad areas of reception. I have tried stock/cooked ROM's/Radio's with no noticeable difference.
I'll probably send mine in to HTC to be looked at.

[Q] Any way to boost wifi reception?

Hey guys,
I've just switched to the HTC Legend and I absolutely love it so far. Great device and I'm very happy I changed to Android from my brother's old iPhone 3G.
One thing I've noticed, though (like a lot of the phone's reviewers) is the crappy WiFi reception. I expected it to be bad... but not this bad. I have to be either in the next room to the router or upstairs directly above it to get signal above 1 bar, and if i move 10 feet away it cuts out entirely.
Contrast this with the iPhone 3G or even the HTC Touch2 I had last year, which were both able to pick up WiFi from my backyard or the street out front (both 15 meters away from the router). I'm not expecting the power of my laptop's wifi radio, but is there any way to boost the reception on this thing? It's not the end of the world cause I have a fair bit of data included in my plan, but it's nice to do some guilt free youtube surfing around the house without worrying which room I'm in.
Cheers,
Jennan
Simple. Either update your phone's radio firmware or buy a range extender for your router.
Ah, thanks for that. I'm fairly new to smartphones, how would I go about updating my radio firmware?

What's your phone's software version number?
I checked the HTC website today and followed the step by step guide to finding out what my software version number. Unfortunately for me, it was up to date, so it looks like this is as good as I'll get Wifi radio wise.
Thanks for your help though
I find the WiFi reception reasonably good. Remember where the WiFi transceiver is positioned (to the left of the camera) and make sure you don't obscure it with your hands. Also, check that your router is not on the same WiFi channel as your neighbours (and ideally about 3 channels clear either side). You can use WiFi analyser from the market to survey your WiFi.

Just to clarify - that's the left of the camera as viewed from the front of the phone.

Get high gain atenna(s) for your router?

I have same problem. My previous HTC diamond had much better WIFI reception.
I found here a more recent rom from the one I have and all instructions needed

mind the **
keep in mind that in order to upgrade radio you need to root the phone and doing so you'll invalidate warranty.
That's why I am waiting for Froyo update and then I'll decide if to root or not
A less practical, but theoretically valid solution, would be to take apart your Legend, and add a bigger wifi antenna. Just replace the black bit surrounding the camera, and bolt on a small satellite dish. Point it at the router, you'll be fine.
If you were to use a ROM that let you hold the phone at upside down, and still see the screen "the right way up", that may improve the Wifi reception, it worked with the Network.
I'm using SuperFroyo

Signal Issues

Hi there
I got my Desire HD last week from MPD with an upgrade on my o2 contract. Generally it all works pretty well and I'm very happy with the phone, what I have noticed however is that the phone reception is actually worse than it was on my Touch Pro! On my drive home from work I used to be (using a hands free kit) make the odd phone call even though it's a fairly remote office, but with the new phone the reception is at least one bar lower or it can't find any reception meaning I can't make calls.
Anyone else experienced signal issues on any phone network?
I was hoping this wasn't just me, looks like it is though :S
Mine seems as good if not marginally better than some of my previous phones (hd2 - Iphone 4)...
Could be a temp issue with a Cell tower or something ???
My signal is far more shaky than my old Nokia n96. Not sure why yet but the phone seems to have a pretty bad death grip problem. Loses 2 bars of signal and a bar of wifi.

Mine also seems to be worse than my htc magic
Better than my HD2 (Vodafone Impaired OS) and the girlfriends Hero (2.1)

Same problem here,
I've tried several simcards from diffirent carriers, no luck though.
I don't know if this solution has come through this board yet, but what i've found out @ some other board is,
Menu > Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Network Mode
this option i've put it on "only gsm" instead "only WCDMA" or "automatic WCDMA/GSM".
for 2 days i've had a pretty good signal without losses, @ the moment i,ve the same probs again, since i am listening MP by earphone.
i will try again without earphone and update this reply asap.
edit:
well, i've put the earphone off and no response, still no phone signal.
a reset will do the thing for me. i't pretty annoying.
Thanks for the response, i'll try the gsm only option and see how it is at work.
If that works the next thing I need to do is get it to stop asking me to choose an alternative network when it can't find o2.
click under the option "network mode" on mobile carriers/providers and then on automatical select.
tbh most phones made out of metal are more sensitive to the so called 'death grip' is the DHD like the legend where the antennas are built into the rubber covers ?
cause when i had the legend reception is good until you hold it in ways that more or less completely block the antenna locations on the legend blocking the top would drop wifi and blocking the bottom cover would drop the mobile reception.
while you notice it i never once had it make me drop a call even in low reception areas. however i would imagine most unibody phones would have similar issues because you know metal tends to shield the antennas

[Q] Reception/Internet connection on Orange

Hi All,
I've had my DZ for about a week now and on the whole have been very happy with it.
I have however had some issues with reception and internet connectivity.
Firstly the phone appears to lose signal more often than my previous phones. I thought if anything it should probably be better than my Tytn/TytnII.
Secondly sometimes it will appear to get 'stuck' on G instead of moving to 3G or H when I get to an area of improved reception. On these occasions I need to either reboot (and its fine) or turn flight mode on and off.
Other than this it's a great phone so if anyone is able to help (do I need to change any APN settings?) then that would be great.
Thanks - Jon
+1
I'm on T-mobile, and my Streak gets a lot better reception than my DZ.
I'm same network as you and I'm having no problems, it's even roaming to T-Mobile with greater ease than my Pro2 did!
I'm kinda the same. I had a hero on Orange which did the same thing, like you I cycled mobile network on/off to fix it. I suspect its somewhat dependent on where you are in the country though. My phone is sim free and I was going to switch to 3, everyone using them seems to report great 3g service. Anyone with experience?
