Hey guys,
I've just switched to the HTC Legend and I absolutely love it so far. Great device and I'm very happy I changed to Android from my brother's old iPhone 3G.
One thing I've noticed, though (like a lot of the phone's reviewers) is the crappy WiFi reception. I expected it to be bad... but not this bad. I have to be either in the next room to the router or upstairs directly above it to get signal above 1 bar, and if i move 10 feet away it cuts out entirely.
Contrast this with the iPhone 3G or even the HTC Touch2 I had last year, which were both able to pick up WiFi from my backyard or the street out front (both 15 meters away from the router). I'm not expecting the power of my laptop's wifi radio, but is there any way to boost the reception on this thing? It's not the end of the world cause I have a fair bit of data included in my plan, but it's nice to do some guilt free youtube surfing around the house without worrying which room I'm in.
Cheers,
Jennan
Simple. Either update your phone's radio firmware or buy a range extender for your router.
Ah, thanks for that. I'm fairly new to smartphones, how would I go about updating my radio firmware?
Cheers

What's your phone's software version number?
I checked the HTC website today and followed the step by step guide to finding out what my software version number. Unfortunately for me, it was up to date, so it looks like this is as good as I'll get Wifi radio wise.
Thanks for your help though
I find the WiFi reception reasonably good. Remember where the WiFi transceiver is positioned (to the left of the camera) and make sure you don't obscure it with your hands. Also, check that your router is not on the same WiFi channel as your neighbours (and ideally about 3 channels clear either side). You can use WiFi analyser from the market to survey your WiFi.

Just to clarify - that's the left of the camera as viewed from the front of the phone.

Get high gain atenna(s) for your router?
boost wifi ?
I have same problem. My previous HTC diamond had much better WIFI reception.
I found here a more recent rom from the one I have and all instructions needed

keep in mind that in order to upgrade radio you need to root the phone and doing so you'll invalidate warranty.
That's why I am waiting for Froyo update and then I'll decide if to root or not
A less practical, but theoretically valid solution, would be to take apart your Legend, and add a bigger wifi antenna. Just replace the black bit surrounding the camera, and bolt on a small satellite dish. Point it at the router, you'll be fine.
If you were to use a ROM that let you hold the phone at upside down, and still see the screen "the right way up", that may improve the Wifi reception, it worked with the Network.
I'm using SuperFroyo

Hi,
I have my legend from 3 week s now, and very pleased with it... I has a Hero before and happy to play now with Android 2.1... However... I'm a little bit disapointed with the quality of my network signal nd some other bug that I hadn't on my hero...
Problems...
Wifi signal and Network GSM signal often bad or lower quality than previously... Is that normal and know for future dev...
Browser often doesn't load the Internet page when signal is not good and stop working or show the error loading message, and even if my signal is ok...
So basically my radio version is...
47.26.35.04U_7.05.35.26L
2.6.29-9a3026a7
Build 1.23.405.1 CL139791
Can you help me, is a new rom or radio planned for soon...
thx

did you compare the performance of your Legend with another phone?
my Legend is underperforming compare to my HTC Cruise, but I'm using H3G here in Italy, running only on 3G network.
Sent from my HTC Legend using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
No i do not compare I juste have problem qith signal quality at all... And yes compared to my hero, it is worst...
Same here, bad WiFi or Edge/3G performance compared with my iPhone 3GS or some other phones I've tested (at the exact same location).
Sent from my HTC Legend using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
I haven't tested my Legend side-by-side with other phones, but I have an overall feeling that my old HTC Magic was more stable wrt GSM/3G networking.
The main problem for me is that quite often Legend cannot keep connections/phone calls alive when switching between EDGE and 3G networks. I've never had such problems with Magic (on the same operator, Swisscom in my case).
I'm not sure if this happens because of weaker reception, a bug in the Legend's radio, or some sort of incompatibility with my operator's network. (The old Magic was Swisscom-branded, so maybe it was tweaked for Swisscom in some way).
same here
I can confirm radio is generally weak with Legend. It loses GSM/3G connection completely in places where my previous phones (HTC Snap & Magic) were showing weak signal but were still holding connection. Same goes with Wi Fi unfortunately. My conclusion: Legend's radio is weaker compared to other phones. Don't get me wrong - you may never experience any problems if GSM/3G/Wi Fi signal is strong in your areas of inhabbitance. But in my case (work phone - so got to be reachable 24/7) it looks like Legend has Failed.
I've had a magic, hero and nexus one before the legend, and for me the legend seems weaker than hero/magic (which are the same in my experience) but MUCH better than the nexs one.#
Overall the legend has been ok though, the only annoying thing I've experienced is when I go into a no signal area (e.g. underground) and come back, it sometimes doesn't pick up a signal again and stays on no network until I switch off and on. Annoying if it's in your pocket and you've not noticed for a while...
Bad Wifi
I've had the Legend for 2 days now and I'm experiencing severe problems with radio.
Specifically wifi:
* Signal on Legend is VERY low compared to Hero
* I'm also loosing connection all the time, where my Hero was extremely stable
* Problem is worse when I'm using my laptop's wifi at the same time
- When laptop is turned off, wifi is somewhat stable on the Legend, when I'm surfing the web on my laptop AND using wifi on the Legend, I seem to have problems with both. I loose connection on the Legend and wifi on laptop is very slow. When Legend wifi is off, I have no problem whatsoever.
* I sometimes have problems accessing Market, Browser and other apps that require net access.
* Switching between wifi and 3G/Edge seems slow and doesn't always work
I AM comparing the Hero and Legend at the same time. I have no problem with Hero and Laptop running at the same time, only Legend and laptop!
Edit: I now about "early adopter syndrome" where they release something before it's finished. BUT this really isn't a new product in that respect, it's supposed to be an improvement. I did not get the Legend for this hassle. If it persists and nothing is gained from my email to HTC, I'm returning it as a defect product.
Can someone expert here give us more info about this and future dev or problem source ? As for me Even if I like the legend I can not understand how they can launch a device giving lower result that it's previous version : the htc hero... ???
Sooooo, Hero radio is ok and get's good signal strength........Hero is made of plastic. Legend radio is weak, drops connection a lot....Legend is made of aluminum. Is it possible that we will never get good reception on the Legend, that it's not a bug, but a weakness with the metal used. Like The first iPhone......and why they are doing glass/ceramic back in the 4G iPhone....
Just asking...I have the Legend as well if you think I'm dissing the Legend here.
nexus one is plastic and from my experience has considerably worse signal strength
The problem for me is more on the wifi reception even if signal is 3/4 I experience a lot of time error in the internet browser, and it become unusefull...
I juste ahad a reply from the HTC support and SO PLEASE SEND THEM A REQUEST IF YOU EXPERIENCE THE SAME PROBLEM as they told me not too much people 've reported actually this problem so they can not sent the development to the dev team...
"New Response
Dear Thank you for your enquiry about htc legend. We regret but as far as we are concern there is not known issue on htc legend regarding the radio and wifi. Once we have a big number of customers with a similar case then we will report this issue to our developers in order to create an update, but currently we do not have enough of examples. If these steps have not helped, please let me know by responding using the link provided and I will be happy to check again for you. Best regards, Ivona HTC customer support team HTC Corp. FM Radio depends on your headphones/earphones since it uses that wire as an antenna.
I don't have anything to compare against, though I am pretty disappointed with the wifi reception... Does it use the ring around the camera lens as the antenna?
Has anyone tried WiFi Fixer?
I've been told that the Legend has trouble with Dlink routers. I have a Dlink 825 and my Hero had no trouble with this router. But with the Legend, I'm experiencing dropped signals and interference with my Laptop connection when the Legend is connected as well. My friend then replaced the same router with a Zyxel one and has full coverage.
Im having the same issues..even when i have strong wifi signal, it often cannot connect to anything and I have to turn wifi off and on. (netgear router)
I also have issues with 3G, the signal is all over the place...when other phones have a good signal, sometimes when i come from standby the signal is gone completely (showing a 'x' on the signal bar), this is in the middle of the city with strong signal from all other phones!
I have turned off 3G and using only GSM and have not had problems since.

well compared to my cowon S9 radio which is perfect the legend is useless. yes i know that its related to the headphones but if a pair of Q-Jays isnt good enough than i dont know what is
as for the internal recievers i have started to have a problem with the mobile data connection. even in a strong location it just doesnt recieve im betting its a software issue tho cause it reads full strength and still does it sometimes a reset of the phone makes it work again but it will randomly cut off after its been on for a while
No problems with wi-fi here (whereas my TP2 sometimes struggles to initially connect) but the GSM radio performance is below what my TP2 gets in the same location. GPRS is possible however. Don't have 3G signal here.
Not sure whether this indicates a big problem as have only had Legend for 1 day but have seen "emergency calls only" quite a few times It kinda comes and goes.
Having said that, the TP2 was a bit flakey here (all mobile network signals aren't great here at home) until the 4.xx.xx.91 radio ROM upgrade, now it's better. (started on 3.something, whatever Voda initially released the 6.1 TP2 with ... I forget tbh)
Hopefully we will see a radio upgrade.

I have exactly the same problem on both wifi and 3G, it deconnect even if signal is ok... and I Have to turn it off and turn it on... Can a specialist confirm this and tell me if the problem come from our phone, the radio firmware or the mattalic case of the legend ???

Does anyone know if its possible to boost the strength of the antenna (either by software or hardware)
I'm located on a mine site in remote West Aust where Telstra Next G is the only coverage we have.
I've found that out of all the my work colleagues, the HD2 has the worse reception of all. Comparing it to a friends iPhone he can get a signal in many places I get none, and once I've reached an area where I do have 1 bar (out of 4), he's usually got 3 bars (out of 5).
I've done a fair bit of Googling/etc but haven't really found anything. I've updated to the latest Telstra ROM (1.72), and that was no better. Also tried a couple of other ROM's from the HTCPedia site (eg Dutty's) but they were even worse.
Are there any software tricks to boost the signal? Can I get it modified to have a better antenna installed, or even have an external antenna connection fitted? I've tried one of those inductive antenna's that clips to the back but that didn't help.
Cheers
Peewee
HD2 antenna
I have a similar problem and have fired an enquiry off to the guys at 'comnet' to see if a high gain antenna can be hooked up to a universal inductive cradle for my HD2.
I will only try it out if I can find someone who has got it working.
There are such things as local area booster relays, but, you would have to get one for the correct frequency and they are not cheap.
Try the latest release radio in the radio thread in the ROM development forum. Its the best so far.
Make sure its compatible with your ROM.
i tested USB Dongle with a laptop to all areas that I would use the mobile at high-speed, loads of places worked and then order a batch of HD2's, the signals are so poor on the HD2 that made me anoyed.
I do have vodafone's suresignal which helps, but not the point.
I have wondered if the metal plate on the back is being a problem, but not tested any combinations yet
I've tried an inductive booster (~30cm aerial), definitely makes it better, but still worse than other phones.
With removing the metal cover and using the inductive aerial its a little better again, but still not as good as other phones.
Most the phones I have had have lost reception at the back of my local Coles, including a Blue Tick SE W705... But not the HD2... Not only do I keep signal I've had several calls there while shopping...
What phones do your mates have?
Maybe its a band issue...
Maybe because the OP is in a mine site? It may hinder the reception, I dunno.
I'm on a mine site with only a Next G tower, and its been specifically positioned so you can't get reception in certain parts.
However, standing side by side with a few other phones, I'll get nothing on the HD2 (sometimes even with the inductive aerial) and mates iPhone 3GS will have a bar, as will another mates Nokia 6120.
Hi there
I got my Desire HD last week from MPD with an upgrade on my o2 contract. Generally it all works pretty well and I'm very happy with the phone, what I have noticed however is that the phone reception is actually worse than it was on my Touch Pro! On my drive home from work I used to be (using a hands free kit) make the odd phone call even though it's a fairly remote office, but with the new phone the reception is at least one bar lower or it can't find any reception meaning I can't make calls.
Anyone else experienced signal issues on any phone network?
I was hoping this wasn't just me, looks like it is though :S
Mine seems as good if not marginally better than some of my previous phones (hd2 - Iphone 4)...
Could be a temp issue with a Cell tower or something ???
My signal is far more shaky than my old Nokia n96. Not sure why yet but the phone seems to have a pretty bad death grip problem. Loses 2 bars of signal and a bar of wifi.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Mine also seems to be worse than my htc magic
Better than my HD2 (Vodafone Impaired OS) and the girlfriends Hero (2.1)

Same problem here,
I've tried several simcards from diffirent carriers, no luck though.
I don't know if this solution has come through this board yet, but what i've found out @ some other board is,
Menu > Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Network Mode
this option i've put it on "only gsm" instead "only WCDMA" or "automatic WCDMA/GSM".
for 2 days i've had a pretty good signal without losses, @ the moment i,ve the same probs again, since i am listening MP by earphone.
i will try again without earphone and update this reply asap.
edit:
well, i've put the earphone off and no response, still no phone signal.
a reset will do the thing for me. i't pretty annoying.
Thanks for the response, i'll try the gsm only option and see how it is at work.
If that works the next thing I need to do is get it to stop asking me to choose an alternative network when it can't find o2.
click under the option "network mode" on mobile carriers/providers and then on automatical select.
tbh most phones made out of metal are more sensitive to the so called 'death grip' is the DHD like the legend where the antennas are built into the rubber covers ?
cause when i had the legend reception is good until you hold it in ways that more or less completely block the antenna locations on the legend blocking the top would drop wifi and blocking the bottom cover would drop the mobile reception.
while you notice it i never once had it make me drop a call even in low reception areas. however i would imagine most unibody phones would have similar issues because you know metal tends to shield the antennas

Yes, the antennas are built into the rubber covers
i'm like just like 12~15meters from the source but all i get is a tiny dot in the signal, is there an app that can boost the signal of the HD2?
i think I won't try to go the HardwareMod way if there are any
tnx

wifi is a two way system, you need both the router and the device to have higher power. If one is lower than the other it can only go at the speed of the slower device interfearence will also have an effect, Bluetooth devices, microwaves, power lines, wireless video cameras, hell, most of the wireless gear you can buy uses similar frequencies sooo. However, the big question is why you dont get a reasonable signal 14 meters away, soo, whats between you an the router?
in answer to your question, no, however the HD2 does support 802.11N which on paper should have a stronger signal, if your router supports N then enable it on your device and router and see if thats better, but my money is still on something stuck in the middle thats screwing with the signal
edit, uping the wattage is unlikey to be possible, and would generate significant heat and draw more power,as well as poentially being illegal, hardware mods may be possible but unless you can check out the radio ROM i doubt you'll be able to see whats possible, if anything, in a software sense.
Some hd2s have a hardware defect where all the wifi signals are lower than normal
Really depends what's in those 12 to 15 metres! At home, I struggle being ~2 metres away from my router, but there are 2 walls and the stairs in between. You could try moving your router or setting up another access point.
my wifi worked perfect for two weeks, then the signal got weak, stumped.
thanks for your inputs guys, yes there are walls in our office & i guess our MIS has really limited the transmitting power just in the display room coz even when i'm at the door of that room I only get two bar.
Hey guys, ive been tethering for awhile now, and had no problems, just really noticed this after my second month of service.
But, when tethering, HTML web browsing is pretty slow, and my Network Meter widget on my computer says im loading webpages at only 25 -30 KB/s but when i download a torrent/file or anything else (even streaming youtube) my dl speeds go up to 130-208 kB/s. So i thought it was IE9 but then when connected to an actual wifi access point, i experience so issues. Also, i downloaded Google Chrome and the same thing happens. Secondly, when im skyping or oovooing, it will randomly disconnect and hang me up, but yet the icon on my phone says that im still connected to data and everything is fine.
Question is this: Do you think the issue resides in my laptop, phone, WiFi tether app, or T-Mobile network?
I must add both the speedtest app and website (ran from computer) yeild the same speeds. Im completly stumped as to why its like this, im putting my money on the tethering app, but at times when i get kicked off skype and it says i have no internet connection, i try loading a webpage on my phone and it takes a bit longer. (Its really hard to say) but i really need ideas as to where i can start diagnosing and eliminating things.
AS USUAL THANKS GUYS
Are you on Magldr? If so, can you test it with cLK? I'm tethering wired and wireless with cLK and it had been pretty fast- the only time I see a lag in losing any page is if the site is a known, slow one (like the Indian Railways reservations site!)...

Im on CLk, i dont like MAGLDR because i have the red key digitizer error. Where the touch screen becomes unresponsive when you use the end key. I might tear it apart and try to fix it someday. But a thought just came across, could T-Mobile somehow know im tethering and throttle me then?
Ah! You didn't mention TMo (am on XDA app, can't see it even of you have added it to your profile!)
It's very much a possibility- other TMo users, can you check this one out?
And how do you tether- wifi or wired? Built-in or an app? I use built-in for wireless and the wired tether app. The app shows the speeds in realtime, try it if you already haven't...

Haha sorry man! Wasnt sure if it mattered. But i have a feeling its my phone, as something strange happened just a few minutes ago, i was tethering, and i lost connection, so i enabled Airplane mode, then disabled it, and it said 3 bars of service no matter where i was.. it was like the radio got stuck/froze or something. Im gonna flash another radio just to check it out. Also, i use the WiFi tether for root users app which actualy uses built in wifi tethering. But i cant really see the speeds as my phone only gets 3g on my window sill xD and i use VNC viewer to control my phone from my computer. And the tether app uses the wifi port to monitor speeds, so it goes way high when im controlling my phone with VNC from my computer so its hard to say. Im more convinced its the phone :/ but just dont know what.
I think ive narrowed it down, after changing ROM, RADIO, kernel, location, only one thing made a difference, and that was location. I think the connection is unstable because there are no bars showing, just shows the H and that its connected, so i think its just that my signal is horrible, wont know till i get my SGS2, if i get it. :/ my HD2 sucks with signal, can a bad SIM cause this?

Are you sure your place has a good signal, and its just the HD2 that is not picking up? Try with another phone. I used to have black-spots in my home a long while back, and used some app for Symbian for my E72 to check the signal strength at various places within the house as well as the cellular towers that is available for me - maybe something like that is available for Android (should be available for sure, is Symbian has it Android will have a million alternative!).

Well i tried with my Sprint Touch Pro 2, and it got really good edge signal (doesnt support 3g on tmo) but when id put my hands around it it would loose service, but in general, it was much better then the HD2. and actually, we went to see a circus, and inside the stadium, HD2 had no service, but Touch Pro 2 had full bars... so im guessing its the HD2. :/
