I bought my housemate a used epic to replace his palm pre until we can look at the note or galaxy nexus later this year. So far registration with sprint has gone fine - they said the ESN was clear and it's been bound to his account without a problem.
The issue is that the data connection is stuck saying 'error 67: username/password may be incorrect'. Looking through "phone settings -> about phone -> system status" shows his phone number and MSID according to what sprint told us, but the 'user name' is still apparently the previous user and a factory reset via the menus and even a full wipe/repartition back to EC05 via odin doesn't get rid of this.
Is there anything we can do here at home or is the only option going to be to go into a sprint store directly?
Try updating Profile. If that don't work then Sprint will have to walk you through a hard reset. You will need advanced tech support for that.
The profile update failed twice on the phone with tech support, took about 5 minutes and timed out with username/passwd failure. We also tried dialing in some numbers on the keypad ##somenumbers#, edit the phone number and MSID by hand, saved and rebooted.
It is definitely a provisioning error. Make sure you are in a strong 3G signal area and try the profile update a few more times. If the tech can't make it stick you probably have to bring it in to a store.
Nevermind.. it's been about half an hour since the last attempt, we tried again with updating the profile and it went through that time. We're all good here! Thanks for the feedback though :]

Glad you got it working.
Make sure is old device is powered off. Power his new novice off for more than 60 seconds to clear the VLR (this is network side). Power device in and then dial ##72786#, follow on screen prompts. You will need your msl. You used this to program your msn and MSID earlier. This will clear your device radio without wiping all user data. After it is done it will try to iota. If it times out again, esn swap to another device wait 5min and the swap back to his epic. You can do the swap on the website. This should get you going. Hopefully you won't have to do the swaps. Also make sure your signal strength is better than -101dbm.
Edit - guess you got it before I finished typing. Glad it's working.

My wife flashed her hero to the official sprint 2.1. She had never rooted or flashed a custom rom before, so her going to the official 2.1 didn't really bother me much. However, now she's running into an issue with her data not working. A couple days ago she noticed she wasn't getting her e-mail. Strangely enough, mine quite working too (I'm on fresh 2.1.1). I rebooted my phone and mine started working. So I went to her wireless and network settings and turned off her data. I then turned it back on and after 30 seconds or so it said it was connected and everything started working just fine.
The strange part is there are no errors and even when the phone tries to check e-mail, it doesn't report any errors. Now, on my phone when this happened, my HTC Mail app threw a fit because it couldn't connect to the exchange server. Since I could refresh my gmail account and got no errors I thought it was just our exchange server. I signed into my account on my PC (for exchange) and it was in fact working fine. After I rebooted (just this one time as mentioned above) gmail kicked off with new mail and exchange connected fine.
Today, she has told me 3 times now that she went in and reset the connection (turn it off and back on) and a while later it would quit working again. She turns her phone off every night, but for good measure I am having her reboot it now.
Anyone else have this issue? She never had this problem on 1.5, so I don't think it's hardware. I've only had the issue once, but I'm also not in her area right now (tower related, maybe? My data borked when I was at home where she is at right now).
Thanks

This does seem like a tower problem. However, if you want to troubleshoot, you could always reset your data settings via the Sprint ## codes.
For data, enter this code: ##3282# on your Dial Pad. Give it a second and it'll ask if you want to view or edit your settings. Trouble shooting this problem would mean you have to Edit the settings, but in order to edit them you need your MSL code, which can be obtained by either contacting Sprint CS and asking them for it; or you can search around here on XDA and I'm pretty sure some people posted other ways to get your code.
Once you have your MSL code, choose edit when you get the pop up window and then click on your menu button -- there should be an option for you to choose reset -- enter your MSL code and your phone will reboot.
This may or may not fix your problem; I've had success whenever I've had data problems.
Hey thanks! I did a search for MSL and found a thread with a procedure to get it through CDMA workshop but the drivers don't want to work with Windows 7 x64.
However, my wife was complaining the other day that it takes a long time for her phone to start ringing when someone calls. I think I'll call sprint tonight when I get home and just tell them I need to fix that and see if they give me the MSL... Might kill two birds with one stone.

On the taking a long time to ring:
1) Move the ringtone off the SDcard into the phone, in some cases the SD card is to slow to read it fast enough. - Worked for a buddy of mine
2) There is a polling rate you can set when you get the MSL - but I have heard sprint forces a particular rate from the tower even if the phone has one set. - This will also decrease battery life.

This may be too obvious of an answer, but have you tried using the device self service tool and updating your profile and prl?

No problem, hope everything works out.
I had the same problem, took it to the sprint store (Waste of time!) and ended up hard resetting it, seems to have fixed the problem. you can hard reset by turning off the phone and then holding down the end, back and home buttons and selecting "clear storage" or "clear user data" (sorry, can't remember the exact wording). It will completely reset the software but it will wipe the data off your phone.
I got her MSL code via the logcat method that was just recently posted and reset her data and also changed her slot index. Although some people say that it is overridden at the tower, I also changed her priority. I updated her PRL as well. Before, it was ringing after I would hear about 3.5 rings, sometimes 4 full rings. Now it's ringing on the second ring. Also, her data was essentially turning off after about 30 minutes. After doing all of the above, she is saying it hasn't stopped working yet.
Thanks for all the suggestions, looks like it might be fixed.
Well it's still not fixed. She has it happen a couple times a day and now my phone is doing it too. It's not happening consistently that I can tell, just seems to randomly stop working.
Also, I'm on Fresh 2.1.2 and I'm getting some really really bad lag. I don't use any custom ringtones, just the ones that came with the phone and sometimes my phone will start to ring and the only way I know is because the vibrate starts. Then a good 3 seconds later I'm still getting a black screen as the phone is trying to tell me who it is.
I will randomly pick up my phone to surf the web too and it won't respond or do anything for like a good 10 - 15 seconds. I open up ES Task Manager and usually one of the mail apps is trying to update with like a 5% - 10% cpu usage, but that's all that has any CPU percentage. I'm not really sure what to try next. I've removed some apps that I don't really use and a couple that I just recently installed just to see if they are the culprit.
I'm using the Launcher Pro Beta too. Maybe that's it?
I've had a similar issue... only happened to me a couple of times since the update though... but I've just been turning "airplane" mode on and then off it turns off the radio and then turns it back on... seems to have worked for me...
again.. for me it's only happened a couple of times since the update to 2.1 so it could be a different issue.
I never thought of airplane mode. Doing what her and I are doing just reconnects data, not turning the radio on and off. I'm going to have her try that next and see if that fixes it. She says that she turns the phone off every night, but maybe she isn't some nights.
OK this is annoying the crap out of me, i had the evo for 1 month now so that makes my 30 day trial for sprint kind of useless,
my internet was working perfectly with no problem since the first day i got it,
did the update yesterday and had the problem with the flash browser and had to do a factory reset and everything work flawless and smooth after the reset.
after i did the reset and update the internet was working perfect on my usual places like work and home where i always get full bars and internet with no problem.
no when i went home last night and start playing around with my phone i KEEP GETTING INTERNET 3G SIGNAL DOWN, even in places i know theres perfect internet connection. its keep randomly giving me signing and right after i open my browser or application that uses internet the signal of the internet goes down and i dont even get a open it, i can make calls and message perfectly but no internet damn it.
CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHATS GOING ON, EITHER THE UPDATE MESSED UP MY INTERNET 3G CONNECTION OR IS THAT SPRINT REALLY SUCKS AFTER 30 DAYS OF TRIAL?????????
My 3G was lame after a hard reset, but a few hours later it started picking up, and now I'm getting twice the speed I was getting before the Froyo update. I'm seeing as high as 1700kBitps on mobilespeedtest.com and dslreports.com/mspeed, 1400 on speedtest.net.Maybe the phone goes through some verification process and runs on a slower network masked by a 3G connection until it's verified, after the hard reset.
You could always do a reset with the MSL. You'll need you MSL code to make it work. I think the process is: dial ##786# and then when it loads, hit menu, reset. It will ask you for your MSL code. Enter it and the phone will reset. When it comes back on, it will reactivate on the service. This will do another factory reset by the way, but it resets more than just the data and system partitions.

how can i check for my MSL CODE???
do i have to contact sprint to get the code or just go to my settings???
srry not to much of a smart guy with this tech stuff lol.
Quick disclaimer, yes I am a noob with an Epic4G. My experience extends only as far as my rooting and flashing roms and modems for the past couple years, and recently PRL's using QPST. That being said...
Prelude:
Due to ever decreasing signal with Sprint in my area, I recently attempted to put my phone on 100% roaming on Verizon towers - I went through a few different Verizon PRL's - the first couple would work briefly then would give me a "Welcome to Verizon Message" - the last one worked a couple times and then I got the "Error number 16" message every time I tried calling out. At this point I left my phone on roaming and tried to push the roaming data over their 'limit' to see if I could get booted w/o ETF. I gave up after 1.5gb of roaming data, reflashed to stock, switched PRL's back to Sprint, rooted, and discovered that the "Error number 16" had followed me back to my Sprint PRL and stock GB ROM w/EC05... After some further attempts and research it looked like I was going to have to call or chat - but given I had just suddenly downloaded 1.5gb in a couple days on roaming I did not want to have to explain that...
Simple solution (kinda):
Requires any old sprint phone, working or not.
1> On your phone with the Error 16 : Factory Reset your phone so that it will try to "Hands Free Activate" upon next boot
--- You can do this via Odin Reset Phone EFS or the ##xxxxxx# MSL reset
2> Power down the phone - do not let it start up at this point - if it tries to off a reboot, pop the battery.
3> Go on sprint.com, log into your account
4> Click the drop down menu for your device and select "Activate New Device"
5> Put in the MEID for whatever old phone you have that you aren't currently using (I had a broken EVO Shift that I used)
6> Watch as sprint "activates" the "new" phone until you get the screen with the programming instructions
7> Immediately go back to your devices and "Activate New Device" again
8> This time put the MEID in for the phone that has the Error 16
9> When the phone is activated on Sprint's website and you see the programming instructions, power it on and let the Hands Free Activation do its thing
Viola, Error 16 is now gone. Root, flash, whatever you want. I am back on CM7.2 with no more Error 16s at all. I would use CM9 but it is not truly stable on the Epic4g. I am not 100% sure if you really have to reset your error-ed phone first, but I wanted to make sure it did not try accessing my sprint account in any way except to try to activate from scratch. I am sure someone much more experienced than me can take and rewrite this better or more accurately but here you go. Clear Error 16 from your Sprint Phone in 5-10 min without calling or chatting with Sprint. Just need an old phone that doesn't even have to power up or work.
sprint error 16
So on a technical discussion.. what causes the error 16 issue? what is causing sprints system to trip that error code? I can confirm the activation of another phone then putting the phone back will fix the issue but I guess the question is why...
Hi everyone,
First of all, I did search the forums for similar issues.
I just went up to T-Mobile and got a microSIM card to activate my Nexus 4. (replaced my old Samsung Vibrant) I'm getting signal (4 bars) but I'm not getting any data at all. It's just showing grey signal bars. When I connect to WiFi it turns blue though. My APN settings are at default and I don't have airplane mode on. Even the T-Mobile guys couldn't get it to work.
Make sure your APN settings match these and then reboot your device
Thanks

Didn't work... Still showing no data.
Might be a silly suggestion but I've seen it before.
Check to see if you have data enabled. Settings>more>mobile network
Sent from my Nexus 4
^I've seen that before too
Are you able to send texts? Calls? MMS?
My wife's mytouch 4g had the same issue until we did a factory reset.
Same exact issue for me. I'm on my 5th day of this. I've gone into T-Mo stores, called customer service multiple times, been elevated to engineer resolution too and still no fix. Switched my Sim twice, factory reset twice, finally even rooted my nexus 4 and installed other ROMs and kernels... Still nothing! Any advice?
My APN is set to default, all data enabled. I get days when connected to WiFi, but as soon as WiFi is turned off my bars go gray again and the error message tells me I need to upgrade my plan to include data (I'm on the 30/mo unlimited plan).
What is going on?!

EDIT: "days" = "data" in second sentence of second paragraph. :good:
Is that the "$30/mo, 100 minute, 4GB data" plan, or a "$30/mo unlimited minute, no data" plan?
Check Settings > Data usage > Set mobile data limit > (unchecked)
Dial *#*#4636#*#* > Phone information > WCDMA prefered
Also, try enabling data roaming (just a thought).

I am having the EXACT same "grey bar" issue, with my phone telling me to "Sign into T-Mobile," and when I click on that notification, the webpage opens telling me according to their records, I have no data plan. I have confirmed with T-Mobile tech support that everything looks OK on their end.
I even reset to Google official ROM and did a factory reset and reflashed the radio(s) with the official Google one. Same issue.
Irritating.
So I finally got my situation worked out. I knew all along it wasn't my phone b/c of my multiple factory resets/wipes, new ROMs/Kernels, and even RMA's my freaking Nexus 4 for a brand new one....problem persisted. Went to a different T-Mo store b/c the guy at the other one was useless. He swapped my sim into his Nexus 4 and his phone then had the same issue as mine...and his sim worked perfect in my phone. Tried new sims...and still the problem stayed.
Finally I got the store manager to call up T-Mo and have them completely delete my account, create a new account with the same number, and transfer my balance over to this new account. Finally a solution! The T-Mo system for some reason had a hold on my account for data, even though all payments were up to date. The dumb thing is, no one could see or change this "hold" as EVERY rep said "There's no problem on our end..."
Anyway, if you experience this issue, have T-MO reset your account. The only solution.

Thanks for the info. I will print this out and bring it with me to the store.
Unfortunately, I have a family plan with two other lines on this account. This sounds like it has huge potential for service disruption to my family.

No problem. I had this issue for a week and a half before I finally told the T-Mo guys that I'm not leaving this store until you fix it. Literally spoke with over a dozen reps via phone, and two different T-Mo stores...each with multiple reps. My issue was even escalated to "engineer status" multiple times after running through trouble shooting procedures a half dozen times. The engineers didn't fix it and never even called me. Such a frustrating 10 days...
You can reset your account which is instantaneous and "shouldn't" disrupt your service. Since I had them actually close my account and create a new one, I was out of service for about 2.5 hours. Not too big a deal since I use GV anyway, so all of my VMs and texts were stored on the GV app/website. They ARE ABLE TO DO THIS even though every rep will tell you "I can't do that, sir..." I was very polite and understanding the first 9 days. On day 10 I called their BS and asked them to get it done or I switch providers.
I hope your experience goes smoother than mine!

Issue resolved. They didn't have to reset my account. I had made a data plan change a week or so ago to 2GB, and then had reset it so that it went back down to 500MB at the end of the month. Apparently, this triggered something weird in their system. I don't know why it only started affecting me yesterday, but that's what happened. So the rep (who was over "chat," not even on the phone) set my account at 2GB and then set it so that next month it would go down to 500MB. I asked her why, if T-Mobile data is always "unlimited" (even if throttled), I would *ever* have no data, and she couldn't tell me why. She said within two hours though, my data would be back. And it was.
All good this morning, so hopefully that was the end of it.
Don't know if this will help anyone else, but...
Cheers.
Hey all, I just got my GN3, still am using the GN2 though BC Verizon can't get the phone to activate to my phone number? Actually Verizon says it show the GN3 activated, but l have no service/phone/data/anything at all. They tried 5 different GN3's and 13 different SIM cards before they gave up trying to activate. My number works/activates just fine on my GN2. So they gave me a temporary number yesterday to see if it was a problem with my particular phone number and sure enough, my GN3 activated on the temp number. When I switched back to my reg # it wouldn't connect...again. Then I went to work which was about 10 miles away and the GN3 activated on my reg#. I called my wife, made a few texts, surfed the net, etc... for about 2 hours, when I got about 8 miles from home, I lost all connection again... What gives here? It's the weirdest problem I've ever seen. I'm home now, and tried activating it again with no luck. Any thoughts??
I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum for this thread, if so please move??
Mine wouldn't activate for the first 20-30 minutes or so. I removed the sim card, reinstalled then went on the website and updated the Note 3 in formation for my line. Had keep refreshing my lines info on the Web page about 2 more times and hit accept before it Finally activated. Took about 5 additional minutes after removing the sim. Not sure if that will help, but hope you get it working.

Well seeing as how I got mine on 10OCT2013 at 10 am and it still hasn't activated, I think it's not going to at this point. I may sadly have to go back to my GN2 and return the GN3 altogehter. :crying:
Mine seemed stuck on activation, ended up using my old sim card, activated almost instantly.
Update: just got off phone with Big Red and they said that for some reason when I'm on my "home" towers, my activation has trouble letting go of the GN2?? Maybe it really is hard to say good-bye...
They are working on it now...
I've always had an issue activating my old number on a new phone with a new SIM.... I've always just switched my old SIM card in and it's worked perfectly lol
Make sure the SIM card has been linked correctly to your phone number. The easiest way is to look on the VZW paperwork that came with the phone and make sure it's your phone nbr and not another person's on your plan.
I am having more or less the same issue.
To make a long story short, whenever I leave the "home" cell tower that the phone was activated on, it will not connect to any kind of network whatsoever. It just shows a circle with a line through it, and at the same time it reboots itself, randomly and frequently, even when it isn't being touched. All of these problems go away as soon as I get back home to that cell tower. I wonder if the original poster activated his phone at work the first time, and that's why it only works when he returns to work?
I have tried 3 different SIMS to fix this: the one that came in the GN3, the one from my old Galaxy Nexus, and a brand new one from a Verizon store. I have done half a dozen factory data restores.
My next step is to try an in-store swap. A local store around here first refused to hold a phone for me to swap, then when I got there (or rather when a family member got there), we were told that there was a master ticket for this issue and there was a freeze on doing any exchanges until Samsung released a "fix". My subsequent conversations with Verizon tech support have confirmed that the whole story about a master ticket and not doing exchanges was a complete lie. The stores are actually required to uphold the 14 day worry free guarantee no matter what. Obviously this store didn't want to give up a phone to me that they could sell to someone else. They weren't just being unhelpful, they were running interference on resolving my problem for their own greed.
I had an activation problem in store yesterday when swapping my note 2 for note 3. The sales rep entered the sim card info that was on the sticker on the box for the sim card that comes with the phone.
It all ended up causing major activation / service connectivity issues because the sim card info on the box did Not match the actual sim card number for the sim pre-installed on the phone.
This is apparently an issues for some other people as well. If the sim card in the phone is not reconciled with the info on the box prior to entering the info into Verizon's system.... You will be in for a time consuming headache

Switching your device or SIM will not work. I have now gone through 6 GN3's and almost 20 different SIM cards. It's the towers/service from Verizon. They have noted that this is a problem and are working diligently to fix it...lol Meanwhile, I've returned my GN3 and will wait until they fix this disaster. This rollout is almost as bad as Obamacare...haha

Mine kept trying to activate on the phone and would continually fail.
I thought I had a faulty device and was going to go to the store. Something told me to login to MyVerizon online on my computer [since I kept my old phone off as directed via the on-screen instructions] and poke around and see if there was anything there that might be able to help me.
I clicked on my line, and the Manage My Device link on the left hand side of the screen and ended up being able to complete the activation via the website. Re-booted the phone, and then voila~! Activation complete.
FYI, I was migrating from an iPhone 5 to the GN3.

Yeah I tried that as well. I'm not sure there is anything I haven't tried. I've returned my device and decided to stick with my Note 2. Maybe when Verizon gets their heads on right and fixes this, I'll come back.
