CM7.2 high CPU utilization - HTC Aria General

I'm running CM7.2 (2/10/2012) and the phone is experiencing high CPU utilization. Using top, I see that process "system_server" is constantly running at greater than 90%. I've rebooted the phone. I have also wiped it completely and reinstalled CM7.2. The high CPU utilization condition persists.
I didn't see this problem with the previous builds of CM7.2.
Any ideas on what is causing "system_server" to run constantly?

I have been running this since an hour after being posted and am having no problems as you describe. Did you update from another rom and not do the standard wipes for a clean install?

The problem does not happen right away but, once it does start, it will not go away.
I had installed this build back on 2/11. Things were fine then also but one day, I noticed that my battery was draining faster than usual and also noticed that the CPU speed was stuck at 806MHz (it normally spends most of its time at 245MHz). I found "system_server" stuck at 95%+ CPU utilization. I rebooted several times with no luck in clearing the problem. So...
I re-installed CM7.2 (build 2/10) last night along with all my apps. No problems. Then a short while ago, I notice that things were a bit sluggish and sure enough "system_server" is at high CPU. And now, it will not go away.
For the CM7.2 installations, I do a full wipe and re-format system partition so it is a very clean installation.
-John

I haven't had this issue and I've been running a clean install of the 2/10 build for several days.
Are you using DC's kernel?

No, everything vanila CM.
-John

Well. It's the HTC GPS libs. I put back the orginal CM7.2 "gps.liberty.so" and the high CPU is gone.
-John

I'm using the HTC stock GPS libs as well, although I haven't used the GPS extensively since updating.

The older HTC GPS library is not playing nice with CM7.2's librpc.so. I dragged in the stock HTC version of librpc.so and that resolved the high CPU issue.
To use the HTC GPS libs, it looks like these three older files are needed:
/system/lib/hw/gps.liberty.so
/system/lib/libgps.so
/system/lib/librpc.so

Oh, I see, you were just manually replacing the files. There are some flashable zips that include all the correct files that simplify the process here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19106745&postcount=3688

I've installed manually on purpose. I wanted to keep as many of the current CM7.2 libs as possible.

The three files that you mentioned are the only ones that are different. The rest are identical.

Battery drain
Hello guys,
I'm definitely trying this since im having issues with extreme battery drain but my issues are related to the display, i think, because I notice that the battery drains really fast while the display is on but if its off it lasts pretty long.
Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Yes. Ever since 2.3.4 or so, the battery drains absurdly fast with screen on. I'm talking 1.5 to 2% a minute.

"libc.so" and "liblog.so" are also different. However, the current files from CM7.2 seem to work just fine with the older stock HTC GPS libs.

Is the brightness turned down or is set to auto? It make a big difference to kick the brightness down.

true, but strangely, when using sense-based ROMs, the battery is quite good

com.android.kineto consuming 8 - 20% cpu (wifi calling?)

In a root console, "top -m 5" tells me:
PID CPU% S #THR VSS RSS PCY UID Name
2705 18% S 37 248200K 17768K fg app_21 com.android.kineto
It bounces between 8 and 20%, when idle with screen off.
It most likely is wifi-calling as that process will fc if the wifi calling apk is removed (until reboot). Uninstall wifi calling if you don't use it, reboot and see if it helps.
Thanks, although i already figured out it FC's if you delete the apk. Scared me for a little bit, phone went all wierd.
With the APK removed and the phone reooted my average standby CPU usage dropped from 25% to around 8%.
What if your uninstaller says the uninstall has failed? It dosnt stop running and takes over 20% of my battery's power.
You can also freeze it withTitanium backup, which of course makes it so if you do need it as some point you can just unfreeze it and use the app. I have found the app useful especially at a friends whose house is made of lead or somehting cuase I get no bars inside and full signal outside.

SwiftDroid - Android 2.3.2 by Mur4ik - Battery draining problem - Solution...

Hello everyone!
Since I'm a newbie to this forum, I can't post in dev. branch, so I'm posting this here.
Yesterday I flashed Mur4ik's newest 2.3.2 Android ROM and I'm most satisfied with it, apart from the heavy drain on the battery. I'll try to solve that problem and post the results here. My main suspect is the Cyanogen's CPU OC control in Settings. Here's why...
Yesterday in the evening I charged the phone to full and left it on the table overnight. In the morning my battery was at 55%!!! Immediately, I went and checket CPU clock times in Android System Info and percentage of time the phone used max CPU speed was over 50%! So, this morning I installed SetCPU and used the same settings I used with the built-in CPU speed setting tool and I manualy set the speed to be min. 245MHz and max. to 806MHz. Then I added a profile for "screen off" to use min. 245MHz and max 245MHz too. I think this could be the solution, but we'll see.
I'l keep u posted!
Cicko
I'm kind a notice it myself. When update to new 2.3.2 without OC battery last for two days with heavy using and after OC to 806 Mhz its one day.
Sent from my GT540 using XDA App
I'm already seeing improvement with SetCPU and screen off profile! CPU time spent at 806MHz is rapidly decreasing in favor of 245MHz --> Battery drain slowing down proportionally! And the phone is responsive as ever.
I'll keep track of it in the next few days and post results.
Greets!
Mur4ik, thanks buddy, for an excellent job so far!
Thanks for the info, hopefully we'll be able to sort this out.
I'm living on battery fear land now

ill try it... i got the same problem with cyanogenMod 7 ... when i was with official LG Eclair.. battery was great...
cyanogen extremly drain my battery life...
when im chargin it.. some time it stucks at random percent... sometimes stuckst at 50 % , 70 % :S
Update:
My battery life improved, but not as expected...
I didi a little research myself and found out that there is a similar/same problem on other Gingerbread ports for other phones. But, people there are saying that they have problems with sensors daemon (akmd2) which is using more CPU than it should. I noticed almost the same thing on my phone. There are two possible fixes proposed by some people:
- First is to set a huge polling delay for akmd2 which reduces responsiveness of orientation sensor and compass. It's done like this:
adb shell
echo 250 > /data/delay
- Second option is to rename or move the akmd2 binary from /system/bin, which would turn off the orientation sensor and compass.
I don't like these "fixes", since they are disabling some of the main features of the phone, or rendering them almost unusable...
I'm considering a downgrade to openswift 4.4 untill this is resolved...
Another thing I noticed is in the logs. When the screen is turned on there is a error message regarding sensors which could be preventing the akmd2 process from working properly and thus draining the battery. Log entries say:
I/power (1266) *** set_screen_state 1
E/Sensors (1266) read_sensors_state
Edit #1:
I checked logcat on my friends HTC Magic and it says (when screen turned on):
I/power ( 144): *** set_screen_state 1
D/AKMD ( 110): Compass OPEN
D/Sensors ( 144): sensors=00000001, real=00000001
Edit #2:
I restored my previously backed up OpenSwift 4.4 (Android 2.2.1) ROM and from logcat i see this when screen powers up:
I/power ( 1151): *** set_screen_state 1
D/Sensors ( 1151): using /dev/input/event3 (name=compass)
D/Sensors ( 1151): sensors_data_open: fd = 99
E/Sensors ( 1151): sensors_control_activate active=00000000 sensor=00000002 new_
sensors=2 changed=2
D/Sensors ( 1151): open_akm, fd=101
D/Sensors ( 1151): sensors=00000002, real=00000006
After seeing this it seems to me that in SwiftDroid 1.3 sensors stay ON (they all work normally when needed) even after screen goes off, so that could be the main problem with battery drain.
Anyone pass this to Mur4ik, please?
Never mind, I got the post count to 10...
I used set cpu in cyanogen and the battery life were improved a lot.. mie i can use it about 1 day. I hope cyanogen moders can fix this problem asap.

Battery problem
Hi 540 maniacs
After i flash it my 540 with CM 7 2.3.2 battery was alright for over 2 days and I was surprise that is so good but then after recharged; phone discharged in 8 hours (LOL?). So I started look around WTF and SetCpu profile for screen off + Auto Rotation Off and that cause my phone have 60% of battery from 18/02 5:50 AM. So it could be sensors as well draining battery ehh hope for quick fix.
Peace ^_^
I don't user overclock, then I use CPU tuner.
With SwiftDroid 1.4b the battery life is increased. Try it.
I am trying it already and it's great so far!
Sent from my GT540 using XDA App
1.4b is better but still draining too fast as compared to the stock 2.1.
It's doing well for me. I just had to disable the built in overclocking app and use SetCPU with speeds 245-806 MHz (ondemand governor) and a screen off profile with 245 min/max speed and it works like a charm! No more meaningless battery drain.
If anyone has a better profile for SetCPU (more efficient) please share it with us!
how you disable cyanogens utility OC?
Sorry for re-posting from the general forum
I am having some trouble with the 2.3.2 by Mur4ik. The problem is when I closed an application like K-9 Mail of Facebook or whatever, it takes about 20 seconds to reload the android home screen. During that time I get only the wallpaper and I have to wait to load the shortcuts and widgets.
Another symptom is when I move from and application to another without closing the first one, and then I go back to the first one through long press on home button, I find the application restarting.
For example if I am at the opera browser and I press home and open K-9 mail or a notebook app, and then long-press the home button and choose opera I find the page gone and it says loading, just like starting the app all over again.
This happens with all apps not only the browser.
Is this because the memory is simply not enough so the phone kills everything not currently active?
or is it a bug in the OS that needs to be looked into?
@SrkeeOSK:
I just unticked the option in overclocking "set at boot" in Cyanogen's settings menu. Then installed and configured SetCPU as normal.
@Dr.Alani:
Maybe you haven't flashed properly, maybe Your SD-Card needs to be reformatted... Try to follow the exact procedure for flashing the rom (wipe first with "fastboot -w"). make sure that You don't touch any settings if You are unsure of what they do!
Good luck
Apparently there was some app killing the launcher automatically. I looked into it after a friends advice over @modaco and foound that the app "super manager" has an autokill thingy in its widget.
Uninstalled it and testing now.

First time I flashed my 540 with CM 7 2.3.2 battery lasted alright for almost 2 days buty after that it hardly lasts 20 hours with implementing all advice to increase battery life for this ROM. Definitely in this ROM the battery is not charging to full and OS is reporting wrong percentahe during the charging and discharging. Any one found the reason why it is and how the wrong % can be corrected. As soon as the OS reports 100% phone stops charging the battery.
I had (1.3) problem with battery too, i did battery format:
1. full charge battery (when is full, unconnect charger, and then connect again, i did it twice)
2.wipe batery stats
3. normal use (1,5 day - without usb connection!!!)
4. at 5% i try to discharge battery completly (turn off and turn on, again and again until device start)
5. then i charged to full (unconnect charger, and connect it again)
6. normal use (3 days - without usb connection!!!)
7. at 5% charge to full
8. normal use 94 h (alamost 4. day)
normal use by day: appr. 1 hour call, sync on (edge/hspd), mailing, every evening at home wifi switched on, i am not using oveclocking, i don't play games, gps active only once for 1 hour walk, instaling apps a lot, for datatranfer bluetooth (to prevent be charnig from usb)
Percentage looks more accurate too, after charging 100% is for 30 min, then fall down to 95, and slowly to 75, then very slowly to 5% (before fast to 50% and then stuck there, and then fast to 5%)

[Q] HTC HD2 Android Battery Drains... :-(

Hi All,
My HTC HD2 battery drains in 5 - 6 hrs while using normally (Music, Only Gmail Sync, Watsapp , Mails , and few Calls .
Note : I have only edge connection and also my mobile was not connected to Wifi )
I have tried installing NexusHD2 gingerbread 2.3.6 and Froyo 2.3.4 earlier.
But was facing same Issue.
Now i am using cyanogenmod 7 Android Gingerbread 2.3.4 but having same results.
I have seen many post where people say that they can use there HTC HD2 android for 1 day on normal use (with wifi connection).
Can any one please help me on this...?
I've seen posts and expiramented with different radios, roms, tips, and tricks.
I've found (with my tmous) radio 2.15 works best (with most roms) ... also if you only get edge connection (as do I) make sure you turn off 3g connection. the constant search for a 3g signal kills ... fast! also try clearing the battery stats in recovery, charge battery full, discharge until 5 percent, and then recharge so a more accurate battery state can be obtained.
what works for me won't always work for you ... especially when operator error is the main problem
Thanks rubledub.....
I have done all necessary settings like lowered brightness, checked only 2G, disabled sync of contacts, etc.... after reading many posts....
But it just helped me to save battery on standby mode...
In standby mode 1% of my battery drains in every 15 min..
But when im using phone it start draining @1% per 3 min.....
I am using following config :
1 Radio : 2.15
2 hspl : 2.08
While typing this message my 4% battery was drained...
Please suggest something

Download current widget from the android market and report your battery drain. It shuold be around 4ma, which is what I get normally. With Wifi on I get 6ma and airplane mode 2ma. If it is any higher than 10ma I would think you have a problem. 6ma gives me 1%/hour battery drain/
Also be sure to have juicedefender and setcpu installed, these help A LOT.
While using phone I get high battery drain too, can't do much about that.
If you battery drain is in fact OK (under 10mA) then you need to calibrate your battery.
Stupid question: What do the battery usage meters in Settings and Spare Parts tell you?
For me it's 60+ percent display, 15% cell phone standby, and the rest....

SetCPU will give you the ability to set different profiles. Just trust me, use it. You can set the CPU to perform at high levels when screen is on but at 248mhz when screen is off, thus greatly reducing battery drain.
Current Widget is also essential and saves time. You can check whether your changes have made any difference within a matter of minutes, not hours. It's free by the way, on the Android Market. SetCPU is also free if you search for it here on XDA.

Guide ? Tips ?
Download Battery Calibrator from the Market (free) and then follow it's instructions. Basically it involves charging your phone to 100%, then using the app to deliete Android's "history" of previous battery use, then draining your phone back down to 1% / 0%, so that Android knows your battery capacity exactly.
I've never been quite sure if this improves battery life or just the reporting, but is still very useful.
Thanks everybody...
Hi,
Thanks a lot to everybody who helped me with their valuable suggestons on this thread.
My HTC HD2 's battery life has really improved.
I did the following this :
1. Now I am using Nexus HD2 ROM
2. Installed Juice Defender and SetCPU
3. Calibrated my HD2's battery
I tested it on following scenarios :
Scenario 1 :
- HD2 mostly on standby
- Only few calls and messages.
- Only Edge Connection, No Wifi
- Gmail and Facebook Sync
= My battery was active for 19hrs.
Scenario 2 :
- HD2 used moderatley
- Used Apps and Games for 2 hrs
- Wifi Connection for few hrs
- Gmail and Facebook Sync
- Calls. Messages and Mails
- few hrs of Music too
= My battery was active for 7 hrs.
Another question :
1. JuiceDefender and SetCPU has improved my HD2's standby performance. It never used to give me 19hrs on standby.
But when im using HD2 , its battery had made hardly any improvement.
Earlier it used to give me 5-6 hrs, now it is giving me 7hrs. Any other tweaking required..?
Or this is the normal battery life of hd2...?
I know I'm not answering your questions, but one more thing to do.
In SetCpu, enable profiles, then add one: 'When screen off, Max CPU only 245mhz', then enjoy another few hours of battery life! I've done this on a dozen Roms and it causes no issues and does not lag when turning back on.
I also bought the official extended battery for £30 and get about 30 hours in total, plus a neat kickstand!

Never fails means? battery life increases? Dramatically? on which Kernal are you tested with this mod? Looking forward for the clarifications..
So if I'm getting 235mA with an sd installed MccMBoxmax SS Transformer v7.0 ROM it means it's way too much? the 10mA you mentioned is that on a NAND based installation or SD? because I guess the SD should take more power? My phone also lasts pretty much half a day with average use whereas before on WM it would go a day with hard use easily...

Nope, SD should drain around the same, I got 4ma battery drain with ACA SD. Just to confirm, 235ma is immediately after the screen is turned on right? Not whilst the screen is on?
after how much time I need to change battery on my phone ?

[Q] Battery temperature on CM9

Hello folks... i have a Defy with bayer module. I have been tried CM9 builds from Eppy and Quarks and i have same problem: battery temperature on normal use it's 40 degrees.
I have been installed CM9 from 0 ( wipe data/factory reset ....) it's stock vsel settings, deep sleep it's working fine but my phone is heating.
Any hint?
P.S: what is your battery temperature on CM9?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for asking! My defy+ reaches 43 degrees easily, and I'm getting kinda worried. Is it the GPU which heats up because of HWA? Battery life decreases if it gets hot, no?
no fix for this issue?
Its normal for the battery to get hot to 40-42 deg..
Depending on the environment you use it in..

normal use, no other apps installed , only CM9 with default vsel settings.

Battery temp rise with tasks that consume battery.
Music/Video player, Cell Radio etc.
While if you just keep it idle and still see the rise in temp then that is not normal.
sometimes it,s higher than 43 degrees, but seems OK for Defy+.
dont worry about it!~

[Q] Android System 4.4.2 drain

Hi i have a non rooted phone and i have a terrible battery at the moment due to issues with android system
In my battery stats screen android system is using over 20% and then occasionally in an instant jumps up to 25% then slowly goes back down
Under my CPU processes i have seen something called krtccd and it pops up using quite a bit of cpu. The phone sleeps well but when the screen is on it looses 15% in 10 minutes. The CPU never goes below 5% either
Can someone please help as i have already factory reset the phone but that hasn't helped at all. The screen is only using 39% but android system is 20 - 25 and Android OS is 15%. In 4.3 my battery was lovely with the screen using 70% but now i have to charge to 100% then take it off at 8AM then charge it again at about 1PM becuase it is near 35%. I can just about get an hour and a half at the moment when i used to get three nearly

Flash a new rom?
Root and disable ant+?
I don't know your experience on the matter but i would start there.
It seems fine for the stock rom with Samsung crap. Try greenify, it helps me save battery a bit
If you root ur phone and loose ur warranty, then there are many things you would be able to do to preserve battery
Sent from my GT-I9500 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Its related to RUNTIME_COMPCACHE (/drivers/staging/android/rtcc.c).

To get rid of it you need to compile a kernel without this config.
Yeah, its a source of battery drain. I dont know what performance gains we can extract of it. I disabled it on my own kernel. It drains about 5% of cpu time when idle.
Sorta old thread, first Google result though....
If you are rooted, you can simply turn off the zRam swap file. This will stop the krtccd process from using any CPU = draining battery. You can do this per boot in terminal as root, or use something like ROM Toolbox Lite to automatically do it on every boot, as it does not persist across reboots.
Example boot script:
#!/system/bin/sh
#
# Turn off zram swap for GS4 stock 4.4.2
swapoff /dev/block/zram0
You can check the progress of the command if your device has been on for a while, and / or the success of the command by running cat /proc/meminfo and reading the output. If both SwapTotal and SwapFree are 0, the swap file is off. You can also run cat /proc/swaps, it should output headers and nothing else (no swap files).
i cleared all notifications and that helped - krtccd reduced cpu usage
