Hi All.
I'll describe the symptoms.
Phone gets very warm
Battery discharges about 10% per half hour, even when in standby. With my usage, battery usually lasts around 3 to 4 days.
Temp/CPU widget tells me CPU is running at 100% usage
This happens very occasionaly, perhaps twice a month and a reboot solves the issue. I have Advanced Task Killer pro and a manual 'kill apps' doesnt solve the issue.
This has happened with Cyanogen Mod 6.1 and my current Cyanogen 7.0.2.
I cant replicate this, it seems to happen at random. Anyone else experienced this and know what's caused it? Also, is there an app that can work like the Windows task manager and shows you what is running and how much resources its taking up? I can only find app killers on the market.
Its no biggie, it happens rarely and is cured by a reboot but I wouldnt like to not notice and run out of battery prematurely.
Probably best to look at your log files from adb run
adb logcat -d > log.txt or
adb shell dmeg > dmesg.txt
for your kernel log to see what's causing it.
Or you can run the command top from a console on your phone and see what's using all your cpu.
First, let me tell u that I'm on stock froyo.
My usage never gave me a battery backup for 3days. I use edge on my phone with continuous data sync which gives a max of 1day backup. But even this will never make my phone heavily heated. I noticed some battery heating while watching movies which never bothered me.
But I use the edge connection to tether to my pc via usb. And when I download continuously on the pc, my phone battery gets heated heavily since it charges + discharges + continuously uses edge. I even feel heat on the touch screen. And the charging red LED blinks alternatively with red and green colours. I'm not sure about the reason of that blinking, but I think it is a warning that the phone got heated. Then I switch off the device for 5min and use it again. Haven't noticed the cpu percentage but the phone was laggy.
Regarding app that shows the cpu and ram usage, search the market for "Android Assistant". It shows the RTCPU% of processes which I think is out of the total cpu % used. It also has quick boost feature which may help u to overcome the restart thing.
Ok. Just shared regarding my device.
Thanks for the replies.
Meknb.
I never got my head around the ADB bits, but will give it a check.
bharat....
As I stated mine is a rooted handset with Cyanogen Mod 7. I dont know what cyanogen do, but ever since I went with one of their roms my battery lasts a lot better, often about as twice as long as with stock Eclair or WildPuzzle rom. I always have all connections and syncs enabled except bluetooth as I have nothing bluetooth to link to ;-)
I'll check out Android Assistant.. thanks for the tip

download CPU spy to check and make sure it's still going into Deep Sleep when the screen is off.
Also if your rooted use No Frills CPU (or any other CPU tuner type app) and change the governor from interactive to hotplug, hotplug disables one of the CPU cores when not needed thereby saving battery.
Even for me as well and so many issues so many things missing in the update like
1.Screen capture app is missing.
2.Lock screen is stock in portrait not turning to landscape unable to solve it.
3.Battery is draining so fastly as compared to before.
4.All the apps not responding instantly it is taking time to respond and even i need to reopen it as it is not opening for long time
5.Main thing is Notification bar is too small compared to before and unable to see signal info properly
6.And the home screen seems more crispy i didn't like it at all
and finally before it looks like a tablet now it look like a phone in considering with the notification bar and typical buttons like home screen......

Daniel, it is going into deep sleep.. It's driving me crazy the way it still uses up battery..Also like said by others, notification bar is too small..Can not read anything on it (battery percentage, wi-fi signal, notifications..)..Any other ideas?
I saw massive drain after I installed the latest Samsung push service update. I unistalled the update and everything back to normal.

Has anyone else noticed a decrease in battery life since the 4.4.2 patch?
At first it seemed comparable to 4.3 battery life: 6-7 hours of screen time with Chrome:The Battery Hog. It also didn't discharge AT ALL when idle. Maybe 1% overmight or so. That is with most programs set to sync hourly and wifi off when screen is off.
However, I've let it fully discharge one time from 100% to 0% battery. It turned off and i immediately put it on the charger. I cant remember if it was since then or a few charging cycles later (100%-15% ), but now it uses a lot when idling: around 5% per hour or so. Screen on time is also terrible. See screenshots for details.
Can you guys share your thoughts on this matter?
More than likely it is your Google Play Services that are killing your device. This issue has been occurring ever since 4.4.x
Is that fixable or do i have to wait for a new update?
Also, I remember that the battery drain started when i connected to a friends phone to tether via his phone over wifi. Does that have to do anything with it?
I cleared data on Google play services, and put my location settings to battery saving. The GPS on all the time drains the battery. With moderate use, I'll last about 10 hours.

You could use an application called Disable Service but it requires root access.
My video playback battery life have dropped significantly since I updated to from 4.3 to Kitkat
details can be found here
The following are using MX Player Pro, H/W+ Hardware acceleration, 720p videos( in 16:10 aspect ratio to fill the full screen). I seen no visible change between 4.4/4.4.1/4.4.2 AOSP in battery life.
Android 4.3(AOSP), Full brightness(15/15 or 583 nits), 6 hour 6 min for 86% or 14.1% per hour
Android 4.4(AOSP), Full brightness(15/15 or 583 nits), 5 hour 15 min for 86% or 16.4% per hour
Android 4.4.2 (DJLKang 4.4.2+ElementalX 2.5), Full brightness(15/15 or 583 nits), 5 hour 30 min for 86% or 15.6% per hour
Android 4.3, 2/3 brightness (10/15 or 389 nits), 8 hour 5 min for 86% or 10.6% per hour
Android 4.4.2, 2/3 brightness (10/15 or 389 nits), 7 hour 20 min for 86% or 11.7% per hour
Android 4.3, 1/3 brightness (5/15 or 194 nits),10 hour 41 min for 86% or 8.06% per hour
Android 4.4.2, 1/3 brightness (5/15 or 194 nits),10 hour 13 min for 86% or 8.4% per hour
I usually get 5 1/2 hours of on screen time max. Pretty annoying.

That's pretty normal if you are maxing your brightness all the way.
This is the battery time I got while using it for two days. Not bad in my opinion.

I keep my brightness almost all the way down. And I have location services, and always listening turned off.
Okay so ive had another cycle. Now, it drained 10% overnight. The screen on time seems okay but ive switched to art with this cycle, and ive seen people get 10+ hours with that.
Im going to try to delete google play services data as you suggested, but it doesnt use as much battery, as you can see in the screenshot.
Android system and Media server seem to use the most energy, though at the time of the screenshot, 80% of my screen on time was whilst using chrome. Also, theres this process called com.android.chrome:sandboxed_process4. What is that? I have googled it, but to no avail. Ive seem multiple imstances, ranging from 0 to 4, in my battery usage list.

Thank you for the information, but im no IT specialist. Could you decode the page for me and tell me in short what it does?
These are screenshots with the tablet idling. Ive let it rest for 8 hours straight, and havent opened any apps.
Seems like it drains 5% per 8 hours. Previously, it drained 0-1% overnight (also 8 hours). Seems like there is the problem.
Wifi seems to drain a lot too, even though i have the "Keep wifi on during sleep" setting set to never.

Yes, I am. Thanks. I will give it a try.
Or install app ops since you're rooted and disable keep awake for all android stuff, especially Google play services and Android system . For some reason Googles devs thinks drainage is less important than whatever they do but fortunately we can adjust their mistakes to our benefit. I get 3 days 10+h SOT. When the Google devs push out an update for something outside of play store "android OS" usually keeps awake until a reboot is made but luckily it doesn't happen too often.
And also, use a superior browser. I recommend Next or Dolphin.

At my age (15) I do not have much experience in developing/understanding how operating systems work but I'll try to explain it in a way that is understandable:
Android and pretty much any modern operating system has a way of "sandboxing" applications or programs. Basically picture a sandbox with sand in it. The sand cannot escape the sandbox because it is around that box. (This is where we actually get the term 'sandbox')
When Google was designing Android, they basically made an implementation into the system that reduces the frequency and impact of application security issues. With that being said, this was made so you can use the default file systems and such without harming the system itself. If you were modifying the system, you could potentially open your device to a exploit. The sandbox features come into play so it can isolate your application from other applications. If it wasn't like this, any application could execute code to steal data/code from other applications. You can still do this with exploits in the kernel and such, but it isn't as easy as it seems.
You may have heard of the software on Windows called Sandboxie which is designed to to prevent "permanent changes" changes to your system, files, etc. It basically separates the system from the application itself. It is commonly used to test to see if software that you have is infected. In short, this is similar to what Android has.
--
The site I linked you in my other post basically explains how Android creates these processes in a more technical manner. But that link was specifically for Google Chrome, but it can be pretty much used in any other application if needed.

I would suggest greenify and put everything but the system to sleep and see if that does it for you. If you unlock the bootloader, install TWRP, root and install a custom ROM on your tablet you can use a custom kernel and adjust (in layman's terms) the power your tablet consumes and when. You can remove some of the system apps you may not use and cut back on ROM usage too. Google adds all kinds of apps to the system that will function just fine as user apps.
hoping to get some help...
i have update my SM-N9005 from 4.3 to 4.4.2 through Odin. rooted. with CWM Recovery.
tried probably 3 custom ROM that support 4.4.2 and end up on the Official leaked.Build 4.4.2 ( rooted)
the battery performance is driving me crazy.
on 4.3 stand By mode i used to loose 0.8 per hour now with the same setting same features turned on. i loose 2.3 percent per hour.
on 4.3 screen time with the lowest Brightness i lost 1 percent every 10 minutes. now i loose 3% with same brightness level. 3 percent every 10 minutes.
Android OS and Android System are always on top of screen in the battery Graph. i
media is also on top of the screen in the battery graph.
have tried a lot of solutions and factory reset with no luck at all. ( i have placed the device with Airplane mode with no SUCCESS )
installed a lot of battery analyzer apps did not have a clue who's eating all the Juice.....
any idea how to fix this??

Partial Wakelocks are usually caused by apps running in the foreground. There's usually not much you can do about that. If you are actually using the phone, battery will run out. What you need to find out is what happens when you are not using the phone.
Do this:
1) Charge the phone to 100%. Disconnect the cable.
2) Let the phone sit idle for 1-2 hours with screen off.
3) Get Kernel Wakelocks from Better Battery Stats.
Then you'll know what's eating your battery when you are not actually using the phone.
In my case, I get ril-fd, l2-hsic and wlan_rx_wake wakelocks the most. I know the causes, but I can't do anything about them without rooting.

I've noticed the first 10 percent (from 100 to 90) go away fast as hell. Use your phone as you would today, just make sure you have enough juice by the end of the day. Leave it as it is overnight and then post your screenshots.. You don't seem to have any wakelocks so your battery shouldn't be draining.. Mine is going like 1% for 8 hours or something, the problem starts when I turn me screen on lol!
I had this problem on my all my Samsung device
the only solution was to take out the battery for a few seconds
worked for me on

i am loosing more than1.5% per hour where on stand by mode... everything is switched of.f im surprised there is no wakelocks showing... ill wait till the end of the day.
its been 4 hour since last charge and now im on 93%..
im assuming the drain is happening due to the bad reception where i am at.
how do you manage 1% per 8 hours that's Awesome (knock on wood) .. is this with WIFI and Data on?
i don't understand ... how come i have no wakelock after screen off.. and my battery draining 1.5 % per hour on stand by mode.... and android Os always on top ?
BBM.
And I haven't done anything special, actually you have to do something to NOT get great battery life while idle. After a factory reset, nothing disabled (so G+, G search and all those wake cycles still present) with WiFi off and Mobile Data ON I lost the usual 1 to 2% per 8 hour sleep. The problem starts for me when I turn on my screen, not when it's turned off

It's caused by broadcast packets sent by other devices in your network waking the phone up. The solution is to install a custom kernel that filters such packets.
My Son's Nexus 10 had served its purpose. But Started to die at Random percent, Mostly above 50%.. So Got a new Tablet for him. But Did not want to throw away this Gem of a Tablet.
After weeks of Trial and Error finally found a solution Thanks to input from a Redditor.
Issue/Problem: Dies at Random % showing battery %0 and Shutdown. But In Recovery with Full Brightness it does not Die for hours.. (as later found out.. Recovery does not need much CPU power)
So What did I try:
1. Changed Rom's (All the way from Base Google Images to Oreo) >> Did NOT fix the Problem
2. Clearing battery stats.. etc. ( incl completely discharge and Charge and all those cycles usually we do to calibrate the battery) >> Did NOT Fix the Problem
2. Ordered a New Battery - (Samsung Model From Ebay - I guess it was used or who knows ) >> Did NOT fix the Problem
3. Changed Multiple chargers (Wall Adapters/ Cable from multiple brands which i have at home.. LG, Samsung etc etc) >> Did NOT Fix the Problem
Solution/ What Fixed:
Thanks to redditor.. Who mentioned about CPU power consumption.. And Old Mother board might not be providing enough Power to CPU. (As this tablet is Old.. It was just an Hobby to make it work and Did not want to spend more money on MotherBoard)
By this time I was on Marshmallow Linage OS Rom.. (As Everything works), Gave Root access to one of the CPU app's and Did this..(See Below) Enabled on Boot to keep the same settings.
Setting the CPU max to 1200MHz and Min to 200 it WORKED! I tried every damn thing before. For some reason... this idea did not strike my brain. So its the Power consumption from CPU.
EDIT 1: after some more testing You can go upto MAX 1600MHz (Your mileage may vary)
Finally Battery drained till zero without shutting down.
LET ME KNOW IF THIS FIXED YOUR TABLET TOO.. If you have the same issue as mine. (I Know many had this issue like mine.. but none had solution) Hope this helps.

Humm... Anyway @1600 mine died at 30% .. So made it 1500 and past below 18% and Still running. So I guess 1500 is max I can go
Also Before coming this conclusion: I did the fowling
Charge 100%
Delete Batterystats.bin
Run this command from adb "adb shell dumpsys batterystats --reset"
And then Changed the CPU max (Please NOTE , Select "On Boot" to keep the same parameters). Once u change the CPU settings .. Reboot and see .. if its keeping the same settings.
Many thanks. I tried all of the the things you tried and setting the cpu max frequency is the only thing that worked.
I could get away with seeing it to 1600.

Streetmart you absolute legend. I'd never thought I'd see the day my Nexus 10 would drain down to zero again. I tried 1600, then 1500, to no avail; then I said screw it I'll just go down to 1200 (with little hope of it working).
It feels so weird to actually have an internet “solution” work. I'm super happy. I didn't want to buy another tablet. I love this one and it worka perfect for what I use it for.
Thank you! :good::highfive:
OMG! thank you for this thread! i was just posting to look for a replacement for my 10... i hope this fixes it BTW.. what's the normal max cpu speed? I REALLY don't want to replace it as the new dropbox 3 device thing really screws me..

I think the normal is 1700MHz. It's what the program showed before I changed it. All the best! Keep us updated.

What a difference... i installed that a few days ago, and i haven't used my N10 much but on standby it's still at 99% usually it would be WAY lower.. i think that program did more than just lower the max cpu a little.. don't care though. the N10 lives on!!
If you still have this issue, I have been updating the kernel and also found some of the power control settings needed tweaked. Disabling "opportunistic sleep" "logging time spent in suspend" and enabling "advanced power controls" seems to do the trick. had an issue where the device would shut off if battery level reached 20%. Haven't had it happen again yet.

I'm currently running at 1600 with this guy modified kernel and wow, besides no more suddenly shutdowns it runs very smoothly, it reminds me the pre-marshmallow age of this tablet.

Where are you finding these control settings to change?
I have replace the battery of my N10 because of low capacity.
Now it charge from 0% to 52% then it goes to 100%. On discharge it goes from 100% to 46% then shutdown and battery shows 0%. Percentage is the same in TWRP.
Since replacement of battery it have aroud 10 charge/discharge cycles without any changes.
Any solution for that?

I have to agree on, that the N10 chipset/cpu/powersupply has degraded somewhat & as the battery voltage gets lower during discharge, it can not supply stable power any longer :crying:
If i reduce the CPU speed from 1700MHz to 1200MHz I get to go down to 20% instead the N10 shutting down abruptly at just 30%
I do have a spare battery in the fridge for later on. Once I open up the N10, I'll see if there is a capacitor or two, that could replaced in the power supply area to possibly fix the issue.
Note:
1. On second full charge since lowering the CPU to 1200MHz the battery got down to 14% & I have decided to charge it instead of letting it die at some point at a lower percentage
2. I should have mentioned earlier, that I still use the original N10 battery & plan to replace the original battery with a new aftermarket battery later on if I need to.
3. I use the N10 in an air-conditioned room for no longer, than half an hour at a time only browsing & reading articles with a short 10min video from YouTube.
4. Before lowering the CPU clock from 1700MHz to 1200MHz, the tablet consistently has shut down abruptly, at 27-30% battery level to my dismay.
5. Tried complete battery drain / cache reset to 0% in Recovery mode & then fully charging it while shut down 3 times without success.
6. So far lowering the CPU clock has made a difference & for prof now I am evaluating the N10 battery capacity with AccuBattery.
7. I charge my devices at around 20-25% or higher up to 80% to prolong battery life using apk's to stop charging or alert me.
I have switched to the UNOFFICIAL Resurrection Remix for Nexus 10 (ResurrectionRemix-M-v5.7.4-20161208-manta) MM ROM after rooting my N10 (Danke schön Corinna ) & had to update the baked in Kernel Adiutor.
Installing from APKMirror the "Kernel Adiutor (ROOT) 0.9.73 beta (Android 4.0.3+)" has allowed me to lower CPU MAX Frequency and have it stick after BOOT!

I don´t think so. The capacity of new battery looks really good. I use the N10 as wall-mounted control tablet for my home. With activated DT2W, full brightness, showing cams on motion, controlling home and audio over the day, my new battery runs about 28 hours before it stops. With old battery it was around 15-18 hours from full to off. My workaround: Reading battery with tasker and starts charging at 50%
I think the china batterys have different voltages than samsung batterys and N10 can´t work with this.

Hey,
That sounds very interesting. I may find out about that, when I replace the original N10 battery to my replacement battery from China.
I forgot to mention in my post earlier, that I am still using the original N10 battery. The original N10 battery keeps crashing at 30% unless I lower the CPU clock to 1200MHz.
After the first charge at (1200MHz max CPU) I got the N10 down to 20%+ before crashing to shut down & after the second charge I got it down to 14% at the same 1200MHz without crashing to shut down & just recharged it. Mind you I was just surfing the net & watching YouTube. I am also using AccuBattery to estimate the battery capacity atm. (Oh & don't install Battery Charge Limiter, because it boot-loops the N10 after install!)
DT2W sounds awesome. Which ROM are you using on your N10 to get DT2W, if you don't mind me asking?

Sometimes it shuts down at 20% and other times it won't. I'm almost pretty sure it doesn't have anything to do with advanced power settings or any kind of internal power settings with the kernel. There are no thermal configurations on this device and they don't add any drivers for it or support for it until much later versions. Heat seems to play a role especially down here Florida when outside. So far in my experience it's most likely to shut down at 20% if it's too hot and not likely to do so if it's been idle for a bit or not plugged in.
