I can assure you my knowledge of HTC's and Android is alot better than you'd think.
Just because you may know alot about 1 device does not mean you'd be a good moderator. I quote MikeChannon here.
Moderating is not about having an expert knowledge of the device, it is about encouraging members to follow (and in some cases enforcing) the rules, whilst maintaining a pleasant, supportive atmosphere within the forum.

Now, I'll be the first to admit that I am not particularly active here, things are very tidy and there is a strong community spirit here. Why would I want to upset that great balance?

So, I pondered even posting but I feel that this needs to be addressed.
Since when has xda started taking nominations for moderator?
Also, I agree with Crump, and FDXRider. It's nothing personal against vicodan but, if you polled all the shift users you wouldn't be voted in, also, what has our new mod Andy even done?

Why are people so up in arms about a moderator we haven't seen in action yet?
Lastly... The fact that a mod does or doesn't have the device is so irrelevant... Even if he had the device, would he be able to offer some new found advice on the shift??? Probably not, this isn't a shot at the mod either, as the shift community is rather intelligent.
In my experience mods are here to keep the rules in check and make sure our section is orderly. If he isn't/wasn't doing this I could see where you are coming from with switching mods, but, again, he hasn't done anything other than listen to vicodan complain that he isn't the mod...

Edit: I also want to ask this... If the device that andy uses has/had a fully functional ROM, mod, etc. that could be ported to the shift and he offered to help port, would you still be opposed to him not owning a shift? I certainly wouldn't...

I've seen a lot of bashing on xda about the mods. We are all human and all have ways of dealing with things. But I agree that a moderator should have a good understanding of the rules and enforce if need be. One rule I've seen go out the door on xda is enforcing the GPL on kernels. Most of the mods don't enforce this and after speaking to the GNU/GPL webmaster about this he is quite disappointed in how online websites don't value GPL anymore as much as they use to. If you distrubite a rom, of course it has a kernel in it. Even if it's not your kernel you are required to post a kernel source link to the kernel source because you are distrubing that kernel binary. Look at how many threads there are that don't have kernel source links.

Here are MY ground rules:
1) If you keep asking me the same questions over and over again, don't be surprised that I either don't answer you, or give you a really stupid answer.
2) I can tell you what you need to know to get WM6 on your device WITHOUT bricking it. I can FIX bricks. Here's the deal. If you want general help, that's great. I can do it. If you want 1-on-1 support, you'll need to PM me and make arrangements to compensate me.

Legolas is saying on HoFo that he was banned because he criticized a Moderator. Just for the record, that is not the reason he was banned and the decision was not taken lightly.
To keep the spirit and quality of this site we will not tolerate abusive language particularly when used to describe other members, or those who cannot accept that this is a community where the opinions of others deserve respect.
We do accept freedom of expression where it is politely and intelligently expressed and does not constitute a personal and abusive attack on other forum users.
Members need only use common sense to see the boundary between reasonable good behaviour and repeatedly going too far.
This is not a forum where people should be tuning in to be voyeurs to the latest tirade of flaming and colourful language - there's lots of other fora you can go to for that.

I admit, he is a bit harsh and may have taken it a bit too far, but who doesn't get frustrated. I would rather take some good advice from someone who demands that I do my homework, than get bad advice and a $500 brick. He is knowledgeable and helpful, if not a bit abrasive Seriously, if I had a vote (which I don't), I would keep him around for his knowledge I'll take the personality quirks that go with it. I realize this may not be a popular opinion atm, but he has unbricked a bunch of Hermes.

If i myself would have only seen what all has happened on the surface then i would probably agree with you, but there has been a lot that has happened in the background that most people dont know about, nor will we make it public.. but i can assure you that the things that have happened in the background completely goes against the xda spirit...
Well, if nothing else, this story illustrates what we should all know well by now ... the internet and technology makes this a very small world ... and there no longer is the fiction of maintaining/making reputations in isolation ... a quick stroll through the HOFO thread make this point crystal clear.
Not to get biblical, but the "reap what you sow" line comes to mind.

Mods: now that the kinder and gentler elf is back, this thread can be cleaned up and locked. Removal of the previous post would be appreciated. I do think that mods should be paid some respect - even from seniors. Thanks.

Perhaps another mod should do the cleaning as I seem to be in the firing line here. I would just say that the above graphic was a purely humorous post originally created at the time M$ was making us take down the ROM archive (Hence "no Mr Gates don't do it")- it was certainly not any kind of criticism of Shogun for whom I have great respect. Let's not loose our sense of humour.

im no one special i just see tons of post by this guy disrupting the community and i am no dev but eithier is this guy but he claims to be and spams our community with multiple accounts he is nothing but trouble
people like this are the reason xda has been slowly receeding from the android community as a creditable source that is sad because we have a lot of talent floating around here and there used to be productive convos on this forum

and what do you call what he is doing do you see the 2000 views he has had on his bs thread about a droid x rom that makes everyone that is working hard to put something out look bad man we cant let him keep getting away with this its not his first time nor on his first device go read the 100+ post on his dominate rom post in your android dev forum i dont see you over there telling him to stop

Well Im going to be blunt about this He is a sick **** that likes getting his kicks off by posting fake threads, he is a dumb ass, a lier, and a ****. But even if he gets baned and he will because he has got baned before he will make a new screen name and do it all over again
It is pretty pathetic that his posts go to such an extent that he even puts lengthy changelogs for roms he never even makes.

what about my post history ok i have said some stupid things not understanding (Efuse) but i admit i dont understand and i take the things that people say and learn from them. i never claim to work on a project i dont have the know how to complete or even start.
never have i been a burdon to this community being slightly ignorant in the programing and hardware aspect of these devices and os is not a crime and i have always felt the it was incouraged to learn here. so thats what im doing learning im not a devoloper and never have claimed to be one i have offered up my device for testing because i can afford to replace my device if it bricks because i want to see the droid x become as custamizable one day as my poor excuse for an android eris but w/e man think what you will

This kid really does need the boot, he does nothing but bring drama to this community and this site. He needs to be banned not only for what he's done, but what he might do in the future, he's a virus. There are far too many good people here that want to learn and share info with each other, but this kid basically ruins it for the rest of us. After reading his thread about making a Nexus One kernel, I do agree it is getting out of hand but this truly is a job for the mods, the community IS his addicition, and all we are doing is feeding it. I wish I had a solution but after typing a few and then deleting them while typing this post I realize I am at a loss. Even if we all agreed to ignore him, what about the people who are visiting xda for the first time??? I have been visiting the Droid X forum daily since its inception here at xda(day oner), and it saddens me greatly to see this lunacy has spread from the Incredible forum which I have also frequented for some time.

Haha. i remember this guy from when I had an N1, and yet I'm so naive that he got me again. His act does kind of put a damper on things, but I agree with those who think that he is less of ****ty person than he is a troubled person in need of attention. In fact, while this thread obviously doesn't belong in the Dev forum (or xda at all for that matter), I find this situation fascinating. He would make a great case study for my Master's thesis.
Haven't seen one so I decided to start my own.......for all who have donated just a way to release the pent up joy of supporting our versatile and robust atrix dev team....when that webtop starts working oh boy!!!! Anyway if you haven't donated no biggie (u should if you can) but if you have feel free to leave con # and a brief statement.....enjoy.

I have no reason to donate, I don't use roms of any sort. The idea of flashing my phone all the time got old a few years ago.

Some of you know me, some don't. I'm more active trough PM then trough posting. But this is something that is bother me for a while and I think a lot of us.
And it can't be done trough PM, believe me, i have tried....
We all (if we are fair) know that the x10 is old mobile. And the most of us don't use a mobile longer than 2 years. So why o why read I so many post of people that are complaining about a update from a dev. Let them move on and give new dev's a chance
My personal top 3 irritations!!!!!
1) if you can't do it yourself, be grateful for everything they do for us and don't complain!!!
2) if we (the users) get a new mobile, how many people still stick to the x10 treads? So why expect a lot of people that the dev's must stick to the X10 forum and development further!!!
3) if a dev don't post for a while, don't post non related post in a DEVELOPMENT TREAD and complain about a update!!!
I have talk with a lot of members trough a personal message and told them about the post they have placed. But I think its a neverending story.
I think when the Mods are more harsher and give quicker a warning and ban people, then maybe people think twice what they post. I know that the mods help xda in their spare time and do all they can. But when you make a couple statements, the word get spread and maybe maybe this will work!

Even though i bought a Galaxy Note, i still read the first page of the General/Dev/Q&A section of the X10 forum daily.
You are right about people complaining to developers for updates, but that's just the way it is. It doesn't have to disturb you, or anyone. Most people ignore these types of begging posts anyway.
My experience in forums showed that having strict moderation won't do a thing. It will only lead to more drama. I know you feel you have to do something about this, but believe me its better if you relax and don't do anything at all. The mods know their job and doing the best they can. Talking to individuals via PM's and trying to explain why they shouldn't do this and that is not only time consuming, but as you can see, it lead you being frustrated enough to start this thread.
This thread will be read by (lets say) 1000, will be replied by 10-20, some may agree, some may not. It then will crawl it's way on the bottom of the page until a similar thread pops up. (There, just saved you some time )
Bottom line is, it's the interwebz. Don't get too attached.

Unfortunately, you are right. People feel its a right they possess to get the developer to work non stop for them. Things in the x10 forums are still relatively mild though... In the atrix forum, the CM7 thread had to be closed for a period of time due to people complaining and demanding for fixes. And the "thx" posts. Here's a classic example

I have just counted 93 posts deleted by moderators and with the warnings posted, about a dozen took vacations for ignoring the developer and moderators warning of being a Dev only thread. Just because you do not see warnings posted everywhere does not mean nothing is being done, most problems can be sorted out using the new infraction system, we use that all the time now, it is easy to use and straight to the point.
This type of thread cleaning and response is happening all the time, reported posts are dealt with much faster and if anybody needs banning, senior mods are available on gtalk to sort it out immediately.

You harsh, Nah. (I do however get the feeling it was you that closed my first thread posted here.) But having an Avatar that is a Happy Face , with a "Heidelberg Scar" doesn't really convoy a feeling of warm, fuzzy comfort to people. More like good mod / bad mod and Colossus= good mod; he even warns people in a very nice polite way. But temporarily freezing threads seems to be doing a great job of allowing the tensions to diffuse. Kudos for that.

Users should be able to mark posts as spam like on youtube and if it gets two or three times marked as spam it should be deleted. Keeping the dev forum clean would not only make things easier for devs, but also for us, if there were no ETA questions and feature requests or other spam (don't post NICE ROM DOOD, AWSUM!!! but instead use the thanks button) it'd be much easier for us to find out the ROMs bugs etc.
A note to the devs: I know I can't request anything, but keeping Post #1 up to date and include as much relevant information as possible might help keeping your thread clean but that's just a suggestion and many of you do it anyways

It just seems, at least to me, people just expect things to be handed to them and they feel that they are somehow owed something. I don't know the average age of the members here, but it may also have to do with that. I'm not giving them a free pass, but I've become kinda bitter when I see stuff like this because I've been using forums since middle school. I was that way once, but come on. How hard is it to read the OP?

Forums for Nexus S get closed, the phones are useless, just paperweights and we all have to get a new one. Probably an iPhone, because we're unworthy of Android. Seriously, what's the point of all the whining?! Life goes on, and so does developement. Is this the first time you've seen such things happen on xda?!
He said he will release another JB rom once he is satisfied with it, which I'm cool with. The knuckleheads that kept asking the same thing over and over again didn't help either. You see it all over the place here. The answer half the time is in the op or a few pages back. But a site this popular will have many more people like that, so sadly it seems unavoidable.

Its the cycle... as a device gets older, it becomes cheaper. When it's cheaper, younger ppl can afford it. Younger ppl aren't as mature as older ppl (usually), and when they become part of the community, they bring a lot of young ppl problems.

All those examples suck, yes. Why do you think the 10-post-minimum was added? But to prevent it completely, you'd need a mod cleaning the threads continuously, that would be a boring fulltime-job. As for the attitudes: It takes two to tango... ^^
I agree with this post. Its like all of the members that left us for a Galaxy Nexus recently passed down or sold their Nexus S to a breed of idiots. It has never been this bad.
