Had an accident - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

I had an accident on my bike today... got bumped from behind by a car while going at 50 or so and lost control of the bike. Got saved by my helmet, rolling away and this fancy biking jacket my brother got me (think it has kevlar in it) but my bag flipped open and my Note went flying.
So I'm okay and thankful for that. But my Note hit the ground hard and split open... It's got two deep scratches on the glass (about 2mm long each) and a few lighter ones, plus a big scrape on the plastic casing at the bottom. This sucks so much .
Do you guys know if I could give it to Samsung to replace the glass? Will that be expensive? My phone's working fine but every time I look at it, those scratches almost physically hurt.
Its the first time I've ought such an expensive phone. Can't bear to see it like this...

Don't know about fixing the note but glad you are okay!

That was terrible man. Glad you are okay, but sad with your note. I have a question, dont you guys buy insurance with such an expensive phone?
I pay 36 norwegian kroner/month (about 7 USD) in insurance, so I am covered if my GNote get stolen or smashed in an accident like this.

Me too. Managed to slow the bike a bit so I was fine, didn't even get anything more than a few minor scratches on me. Was just a bit shaken up, and really pissed. The stupid car sped off when he saw I was okay.
Actually feel a little guilty for feeling so crappy about my phone when I'm okay.

[ignore this]Don't have insurance for phones easily available here. I think. (I live in India).
Sorry. Was just looking. I was just ignorant about that. There are insurance policies are there or phones here, just not advertised.

You should be happy your not injured as it could have been worse, especially when your on a bike, as for the phone...if you don't like it how it looks try and contact Samsung or take it to where you bought it from and ask how much it would cost to fix ...i'd pay £100 for it if it came to that for a phone worth so much.

I don't know where you are physically located, but in the UK, I'd expect the car driver's insurance to pay for repairs to your note (assuming you were not at fault of course!). Failing that, your household contents insurance might cover it.

Dave

What the hell dude? The retailers always ask you to insure the device when you buy it for a small one time only amount. I had my galaxy s2 insured. Didn't bother with the note though. Did you manage to get the plate number of the car? And yeah, hope you recover fast, physically and psychologically...

Just got my motorcycle permit, Im sad to hear what happened. Glad you are ok. Phones can be replaced. You cannot.
That said, motorcycle riders should look into Boblbee products. Specifically their class 2 back protector aka backpack and their cellphone holder designed to survive such accidents.

It's called "an accident" for a reason.

Sorry about your accident bro! All that matters is that you are ok. Last month i've changed my screen under warranty (screen issues, lines etc) and a saw that the glass is glued to the amoled, it's one big sandwich, it comes with the front facing camera, home button, speaker and the screen plastic bezel. The screen with all the parts is around 300$.
Good luck!

My son woke me up in the morning i bent over to look at the time knocking my HD2 all of 2 foot onto my laminate flooring..... screen has completely shattered!! this is one fragile device. Thankfully its insured through Vodafone I took it into the store today, but there doubtfull it can be fixed as it also chipped a piece of casing off as well. Now I'm a bit concerned they have no stock of the HD2 . I'll be gutted if thats the case.
Another reason why I wont be having kids...
Hi, I rang Vodafone today and I think they have a few replacement unitsleft, as they said they'd bee shipping me out one in the next few days... see my thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611939
I hope its actually a HD2 they are shipping me and not another phone, fingers crossed!!
The direct replacement number they gave me was 08448540430 but I'm not sure if thats the right one for insurance but you can try it. Let me know how you get on
Sounds promising, thanks! If I get another i'll be wrapping it in cotton wool...

This is quite worrying. I mean sure dropping a phone would not be considered "normal use" but surely it should have been taken into account when designing the unit that phones do get dropped?
My Touch Pro has hit the deck on more than one occassion and it's unscathed!! I'm not the careless type either, I look after my tech but these things happen. It's worrying that a 2ft drop onto laminate could cause the screen to completely shatter.
Strange, dropped mine 6 feet onto a tile floor yesterday, i was like nooooooooooooo!, picked it up, still perfect, must have been lucky.

Your Touch Pro also happens to have a plastic screen. Sounds stupid comparing it to a thin glass screen, doesn't it? You make it sounds like it's the coming of the apocalypse because the HD2 is the first of its kind to have screen cracked when dropped. Take a look at iphones, droids, hero, etc...
People here freaked out because it's probably the first capacitive screen they've owned and continue using it like it's plastic like past HTC phones. Be extra careful. Period.
You were extremely fortunate, either that or I was extremely unfortunate. Ive been reading about the HD2 apparently theres alot of internal stress so although the screen is pretty much scratch proof its not so good on when struck. Very annoying as Ive been very protective of this phone
its actually pretty tough

I'm not saying your wrong, but things like "drops" should be taken into account at the design stage of a device such as a phone.
Your car keys are not meant to be dropped, but they'd survive wouldnt they? A mobile phone, by it's very nature, is prone to a drop or two over it's lifetime...
Your reply is very condescending and poorly thought out.
Seems like the phone is a bit like an egg. Squeeze an egg from the top and it won't break. Squeeze from the middle however...! So some drop the phone and it shocks the "middle" while others drop it and it shocks the "top". Some are lucky, some are not. Hey ho, them's the breaks! (No pun intended)

Seriously. I let it drop like every god damned day from the 24th to the 1rst, and it's still pristine. no scratches. I even let it drop from my height (6 feet 2) while drunk and playing with a girl who tried to snap it out of my hands, my heart skipped a beat, but when I took it up, again, no scratches. I was like, God exists!
But neverthless, I ordered three different cases. I don't want to run out of luck.
Dropped mine from 1,5 meter on a stone floor, nothing happend....
Thank god!
I've dropped my HD2 more than 6 times already (usually from holding height, so about 4 feet) sometimes with the leather case sometimes without. It is still in perfect condition. Come to think about it, it think it always landed on the ends so that may prove the egg theory. I do not have it insured so I'm not gonna go prove that theory just yet
It really must depend the way it lands, but trust me 2 foot (bedside cabinet height) was enough to write off my new love lol. Or maybe someone didnt build mine and the other poor bast*rds phones right... maybe forgot to do up a few screws haha, but anyway all I'll say is be damned careful and take out that insurance it really is worth it.

Condescending? Poorly thought out? Like how you're comparing dropping your brick of a phone with plastic screen to a thin one with GLASS screen? LOL. I'm not even going to vilify that judging by your lack of common sense and logic.
Of course it's taken into account during the construction of the phone. Some people enjoy the finer things in life, and that means sacrificing some structural integrity for form factor. I'm sure being as naive as you are, you probably didn't think about that. You see, Syphon, the HD2 is like a Ferrari F430 comparing to your Civic of a Touch Pro. It has carbon fiber exterior mated with 490 ponies strapped to the back, and like any other cars out there, it has been crash-tested. It's expensive because of lightweight material, because of exquisite engine design, and because of engineering. All this to ensure that the driver gets the most thrill and satisfaction out of driving it. These cars are well maintained and pampered due to the common sense that these owners have and to be able to understand that these toys are expensive and you'd take the utmost precaution to enjoy them. Now the majority of the people who own these cars are smart, successful people who take pride in taking care of their valuables...the kind of stuff that you lack.
Your Civic, on the other hand, are a dime a dozen...and are the stuff that junkyards are made of. They're cheap, easily to get thrown around and can be easily fixed. The fact of the matter is, your civic is nothing more but a rolling scrap metal that attracts door dings, bird poo, and a variety of things that happen to a car with as much of a presence as a piece of rock. In case you're still clueless, your touch pro should never be compared to an HD2. It's a giant slab of plastic that doubles as a door stop.
Now, I was going to stop but you made another grand of a post. In case you haven't noticed, most car key FOBs are PLASTIC. Yep. Quite a shocker huh? You know what else is a shocker? It doesn't have a screen. All it is, is a small PCB board with a round battery attached to it. Though I wouldnt expect you to understand that based on your inane inability to understand what plastic is and what glass is. I suggest having a running start and smashing your head through your car window so you'll know what the difference is.
....I should aso tell you to put on a helmet to protect that smart brain of yours.

Screen cracked when in pocket

Hello All,
Took my S3 out of my pocket today and noticed that the screen has a crack all the way from the bottom left corner to the home button (picture attached). I have had my S3 for about two weeks now and am really disappointed with the quality of the product. I always keep the screen facing inwards towards my leg so am really at a loss as to how I managed to crack it.
I bought the phone from Amazon UK and am wondering if I can get a replacement stating manufacturing defect or should I contact Samsung directly.
Any ideas?
TIA.
Ouch feel sorry for you mate. No insurance I take it?
If you can prove it was a defect you have a good leg to stand on. They might realize if they can't find and marks or impact points. Good Luck as you will need it..

You can always try to get it replaced but I think the chance will be small they will replace the phone as it is cracked, they will definitely blame it on force from outside. Are there more phones cracked this easily as you described it that you are aware of?
Sorry to hear you cracked the screen, imo the phone is quite strong, mine dropped by accident from three feet high without any damage. But that doesn't get you anywhere, I know that...
Now I look at the cracked screen it looks like something pressured the left side of the home button strongly.
Verstuurd van mijn GT-I9300 met Tapatalk
Sometimes this just seems to happen. I've only seen one other person who had this happen with a Galaxy S3, but I've heard stories like this since the Nexus One came out.
I'm guessing some devices just happen to have structural integrity problems with their glass, I don't really know if much can be done because of how extremely rare it is.
You should have got insurance or been.more careful. It is **** when this happens buddy.
They (Samsung/amazon) will not exchange it for any reason as it will be seen as damaged caused in your possession and that when it was sold there were no cracks or anything.
I work for a phone retailer and deal with this kind of thing at least once a week.
Try protect your bubble or something like that , then make a claim.
Hope you get it sorted.

It looks like the glass underneath the home button is not very thick only a few mm, and looks to be the weakest point on the phone screen, see how it`s broken on the bottom left corner of the home button.
John.
Nope, no insurance unfortunately. Forgot to mention that the phone was protected by a gel tpu case...
Really bummed!
wow that sucks... feel your pain.. every time I read a post like this, the more afraid I am of getting this phone..
I've sent stuff back to Amazon within the 30 days they have for returns that were broken. Just stated return under poor quality, faulty and they just asked if I wanted another or a refund. Not £500, under a ton. But they are pretty good with returns.
Don't bother with Samsung.. they are a waste of time. Contact Amazon.
Funny thing is I`ve been not only reading, but also hearing lots of reports about the fragility of the S3. Bad thing is that I got mine last week. I am being extra careful with it.
I wonder if Samsung realizes they have delivered such a fragile product.
I've also heard that. But here's some sort of consolidation I have had 4 people come back into my shop with cracked screens on their HTC one x's, some claiming it just happened , others that they pressed hard on the screen etc. (Regardless how it happened the screen is still cracked)
Some had insurance (so only insurance excess to pay) and the others who didn't, HTC only charged them 79.99 for either a replacement phone or the screen fixed. ( which in my experience in a new £500 expensive smart phone is amazing)
So there you have it. **** happens. No phone is perfect and mistakes happen.

I contacted Amazon today and they were quite open to doing a refund/replacement. I went for a replacement as I am quite happy with the phone overall. Glad I bought the phone through Amazon.
Will most definitely get insurance on this puppy second time around!

I did not drop the phone thankfully. And it was not like I was wearing tight skinny jeans or sumthin, the phone had plenty of room to breathe in the pocket but somehow I still managed to crack the screen. I have had a Nexus One for 3 years and I was able to keep that crack free without a problem. I understand that it is one of those things but I am not feeling the quality love from Samsung on this one.
maybe it was a bump from human traffic etc etc that you might not have noticed?
since you already said your pocket has lots of breathing room, the only time that pocket is going to be tight is when you're sitting down. i don't think the pressure from that would be enough.
Gorilla glass or not it looks like the GS 3 has extremely fragile glass on the front. I have dropped both my nexus one and my sensational xl a couple of times without problem. Neither of those devices had gorilla glass! Also several users in my country even reported cracks on the plastic back cover. This comes as a shock considering the first 2 galaxy s devices are well known for their toughness. why this sudden regression in durability?
Just a postive side, i have nothing but great things to say about the make of the phone.
I, though it sucks to say....have dropped my sexy Gs3 6 times already(this is a first for anyone phone i have owned) the silver bumper is completely ate up, looks like i dragged the edges of the phone the concrete ALOT...lol
but the Glass after all six drops.....FLAWLESS, no scratches no cracks. and all six were from waist up. lucky or not, i am impressed to say the least.

Is the S 4 too weak?

I just pulled the S4 out of my trouser pocket (front) and the screen has been broken. :crying:
It did not drop or so but I went some kilometers in the car and it got some tension in the pocket Apparently the plastic chassis is rather soft and could not save the screen enough.
Can you show some pictures

Here you are. You can see the crack only when you look very closely. Don't know how to photograph this. When the screen is off you don't see nothing.
Id say it is a bit weak, Ive cracked my front glass (digitiser is fine) between the home button across the menu touch to the side. Ok I dropped it from 4 feet onto concrete but I dropped my S2 about a hundred times before the screen gave. It (S4) is still fully functioning so doesn't bother me, It was the second drop- the first just dented and chipped the chrome effect plastic surround bezel that really should be made of titanium on this phone as its so light and fragile.
I wont swap it on insurance exchange until I break it proper and it is unusable, Orange UK are very good with insurance, £25 admin fee and courier swap the next day.
Ive only had it 2 weeks !

Buy rigid screen covering cases, pockets aren't safe they're either tight and exert pressure or they're loose and bang about, the phone is worth a lot of money and deserves protecting.

That's a cracked amoled and not the glass, which explains why you can't see anything with the screen off.
If you've ever seen an s3 / s4 amoled you'd know exactly how thin and fragile they are. Best way to explain it is like an egg shell. It breaks to bits when any pressure is exerted on it.
So it seems that pressure from your trousers has flexed the body and cracked the inner amoled screen.

Thank you for your reply. It might be that there were some keys in my pocket when I had to carry some heavy stuff around.
Now I learned how fragile it is the hard way. I just hate those flip cover cases but it is "highly recommended" apparently.
I purchased the unit two weeks ago. I will see how nice the return policy is.
Your not alone Tricki There are at least 3 other threads with the same reports of the S4 breaking in pockets!
Mine broke in my pocket also!
To all these people saying there must be more to this story, mine was taken out of my car mount, put in my front right empty pocket (screen towards leg) after I got out of my car, I walked into my house took the phone back out of my pocket to discover the LCD had cracked! No physical damage anywhere on the outside of the phone, digitiser completely fine! Phone has never been dropped and hasn't been knocked on anything! Every other phone I have ever owned well over a dozen, over even more years has survived being carried like this!
To say the Amoled is very thin and fragile in the S4 is an understatement!
This is not new. Happend to the Galaxy S3 as well: https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/777720?start=0&tstart=0

Actually, your report made me think about amoled displays. If they have this type of weakness, it makes them really fragile compared to LCD displays.
Also, my tip was meant to be general. I sometimes forget my phone on the pocket but I usually tend to take it out before sitting. Your report makes me think about this even more.
I wonder if this happens on other non-oled devices.
And one more thing, just because your pocket is on the front does not mean that a phone does not slide to the side.
Never heard of problems like this from the S2. I used to have one. I never took special care about it. It just worked fine and survived some drops.
I think a phone should survive some stress. Perhaps it is just the combination of size and plastic chassis.with the Galaxis which followed the S2.
bad apple?

Am I the first to break the screen?

Yup, just a little over 48 hours after purchasing my G4, it slid out of my pocket when getting out my car and fell flat on its face ?. This is the first screen I've ever cracked. Usually people bring me their cracked screens to me so I can repair or replace them. My question to you guys and gals is should I go through AT&T's insurance or through LG's warranty department to get it replaced. I've looked into doing it myself as well. Just trying to weigh my options.
?????
Ouch!
Yeah, it made me sick to my stomach when I saw it.
I'd say whichever is cheapest, I wouldn't try fixing it myself risking to break it or something.
Damn, really feeling bad for you [emoji22]
Bad thing is I have a spigen case and tempered glass protector order and should be here tomorrow.
Damn that sucks man sorry.

Same thing happened to another guy a few days ago. Same story even. Fell out of his pocket getting out of his car in a parking lot and cracked the top left corner. I think he said LG wanted like $150 to fix it.
slid out of the pocket getting out of the car. Raise leg up, empty pants pocket. The height isn't even that high less than two feet.
Man that blows. You guys weaing skinny jeans or something. Mine fits all the way inside my front right jeans pocket. No way its falling out.

Dropped mine today case saved it
That sucks, bro. I definitely feel for ya.
That sucks. Look on the bright side, has this been a Z3, whole thing would've been shattered.
Does the touch screen still work? I remember breaking my g2 and it completely shattered and it didn't register touch at all!

Yeah everything still works.
It's not that bad, just an eye sore. I'm gonna be talking AT&T tomorrow see if it's worth using their insurance.

yes...it's really an eye sore!!!!
i guess we are lucky the screen cracked on the top corner...the LG service center guy told me..that if the crack hit the digitizer...they will need to replace the digitizer which will cost more..
for now, the replacement on the body frame and the glass will cost around sgd190..
Another great example of why not to Rock any phone 'naked'. Thanks for sharing and hopeful you get a resolution as soon as possible.

2nd day. Cracked. gonna cry

Case comes in Saturday....slipped off my lap getting out of car and this happened.
OMG. T.T I'm sooooo sorry. Yeah, this is the exact reason I bought cases before getting my phone. I can relate to having to wait to get a case, as that's what happened with both my S3 and S6. Was paranoid AF that I'd drop the phone and damage it.
Got lucky that nothing happened before I got the cases, though in the case of my S6, the guy I bought it from included one, which he didn't mention that he'd include one, so that was a nice surprise when I got the phone. But, since then, I definitely made sure I was prepared so I'd have something Day 1 of getting my S8+.
Is there anything you can do about it or... do you just have to live with a broken back?
Thanks. I'm going to switch out the back glass this weekend hopefully. Can't do anything about the scuffs on the plastic, but better than nothing
True, true. Until then, just be careful that you don't cut yourself on the glass. Just curious, how high was the drop? Crazy that it cracked so easily. Then again... it IS glass...
Literally 2.5 feet. Im kinda dissapointed:/
I already have two cases and a screen protector, i pick up my phone tomorrow.
Sorry this happened to you
it was my own carelessness not paying attention and lack of getting a case in time... altho i honestly didnt think id recieve the phone on the 19th either.
That's why I was using my s5 outdoor till I get my spigen case :crying: I'm sorry for your loss :crying:

Omg I want to cry for you, I know how this happened when I dropped my note 5 a few weeks after getting it! The phone doesn't feel the same after
The drops that hit the corners are often killers.

... That's not even waist height. :/ Expected a corner dent or whatnot on the metal frame, buttttt... didn't think the glass would break at such a low height.
Who you buy it through?

That corner damage looks worse than any of the drop test videos.

how can one be this rude, is the better question!
No need to pour salt in the wound with insults.
You put the phone on your lap in your car? You kind of deserve it. It's an expensive phone, you should have been way more careful with it, especially without a case.

I've done this multiple times. It's not hard.
I had a few slips yesterday so have ordered a case that was delivered this morning!
I was going to leave it a few weeks but came to close to amazing it. I even left it I'm the house where I went out to do some . Even errands.
Running
Rule nunber 1. NEVER EVER EVER put a phone on your lap when in a car.
Im sorry that happen to your phone that sucks.
My wife drop her note 7 (second recall device) 10mins after walking out the store. Only crack the bad. I did a claim for it paid the $175 got a new one the next day and then 3 days later oh note 7 recalled again.
