i was wondering, what if i got a USB harddrive, and plugged it into my hermes?
would WM6 even notice its there?
this is assuming i've got a externally powered HDD that uses the normal USBHOST.
i searched "usb harddrive" in the hermes forums and not many things turned up..
If you have one lying around, give it a go?!

that might be the clue to your answer..... the usb port in the phone lacks the capability to host an actual usb device, whether the external device is powered or not... But give it a go anyway... i cant think of any harm in trying... unless there is some kind of major power backflow, but that shouldnt happen unless your external device is faulty
the OS may support it, but hardware-wise - i dont think the Hermes supports USB hosting? or does it?
My brain says no...
But the hope in me says yes...
Wondered about this myself before.
Doesnt the HTC have the ability to act as an external UsB drive through the USB port when connected to a PC using the Advanced USB settings. Maybe its just a question of reversing the settings maybe with an added utility or something i have an external hard drive but not converter to convert the full usb to a mini usb

having the device mimmick and external drive and plugging in external storage through USB are 2 completly different things... and it all comes down to the USB host... when you plug your phone into your pc your computer then is able to act as a usb host, as it has the power and the drivers necessary for that... the phone itself lacks the abiltiy to be able to become a usb host...
but hey, at least your thinking
So it may be possible to access a USB HDD if we catered for it using a driver of some sort (written by us guys ofcourse). This may even show up in the file manager as something like /Hard_Drive.?
main procesor (and also OS itself) have support for USB host, but for some reason HTS decide to not enable this feature, it was asked many times, but solution doesnt exist yet... I used this functionallity on my old Fujitsu-Siemens LOOX n500 without necesity to install any drivers, or registry hack, after connection device had available after few second. It was WM5 device.
well think about this:
keep a laptop usb HDD in your car, 160GB of music at your command, with TCPMP who needs a ipod?
i've already modded my stock headset cable to have a 1/8" miniplug AND RCA's on it, so i'm set for the output, but my 4GB of microsd cards just don't cut it
so i'm working on tryin' to find a usb mini b male to usb b male cable right now, might just have to solder one up myself-- i'll post to see how it goes.
I think I've seen them for sale at Radioshack and Compusa - might try peaking in there though if you have a bunch of USB cables kicking around probably cheaper to solder
IF you look around on the net somewhere, someone successfully made a wifi hard drive, and i think it was fairly inexpensive... He loaded tons of mp3's and would access them from his phone via wifi.

Looks nice!
I just tried this. And nothing happens. Tried a usb memory key (low power), an external HDD (on its own power supply) and a card reader, none of them did anything.
thanks for the go.. after my weekend spent messing with *nix and tryin' to get into locked up wifi, i was spent.
hey all
Just got in my x1 and it works a beauty... however i am experiencing a strange issue when connecting the x1 via USB to my PC.
I have a MicroSD card, though my PC identifies it correctly and i can browse through it, when i try to transfer certain files ..it takes horribly long time like 2-3 mins for ~ 1 MB or so (which is very bad for a USB 2) and most of the times the connection breaks up, with a Windows error ,saying the connection was terminated due to an I/O error or remote device terminated.
I have the same problem using both Active Sync and direct USB transfer.
I have checked this with 2 different cards and both have the same issue, so its a prob somewhere with the phone...
Did/Is anybody encountering a similiar issue ? Any suggestions.
I have tried changing the USB cables as well as installed the s/w's many times.
Cheers
Try using a shorter cable. Or use something like this:
http://www.incomp.hu/bolt/arukepek/USB -MINI USB GYUJTO.JPG
I have a couple of these adaptors and they eliminated the problem for me. I don't know the reason for the problem, or if I'm right about the length of the cable, but it worked for me.
Never had the problem again.
Try changing the USB hub that you use.
ya..i tried changing the USB hubs and cables as well... still no luck...
I just googled I/O error and there are plenty of topics. I couldn't find anything useful though.
Some people suggest that it is either a pc usb hub malfunction or a defect in the micro sd. Which is strange, because I have never had that problem since I changed my usb adapter.
Keep looking man and if oyu find a solution don't forget ot post it .
ok...i uninstalled my USB drivers and reinstall them on my PC...and things seem to be working fine ,so this is not a problem anymore...though when i tried to do Internet sharing via USB , my x1i froze to death, it happened a couple of times...so need to still look out.
I had similar issue when I use longer usb cables, especially when they are of low quality. With short USB cables the problem seems to be missing, so I guess it is something connected with the USB communication, not exactly X1 issue.
Hi. I have a problem here. Is it possible to flash new rom directly through bootloader, my activesync is not working properly, and something is wrong with my usb connection - when I connect my device to PC via usb, in bootloading mode - it gets connected and disconnnected about 50 times in one minute, no .RUU is able to recognize it for long enough to complete the instalation. I've tried to reinstall the activesync, did hard reset of my phone, deleted relationships - but no luck. What worries me most is that usb connection problem. It's only with HD2, all other devices connect properly. Anyone knows the answer, what should I do in order to fix that? P.S I always remove sim and sd card, and disable my antivirus programs and firewalls during my flashes....
Bricked it.
And now - I'm stuck...seemed I finally got connected via usb through bootloader for longer than two minutes, so I started fleshing my radio... and it got disconnected after a minute by itself again, in the midllle of the process...Now, there's an upgrade rom code error on green field of my bootloader, telling me to try again, only - I can't do recovery, cause my usb connection gets on/off 50 times a minute, whenever I try to do the recovery .... Any suggestions?
Have you tried another USB port? Perhaps even another computer.
Have you also eliminated the posibility of the cable that you use to connect your HD2 is damaged in some way.....
You can also flash ROM/Radio via SD card......
There is a sticky thread that explains how to do so.....
You basically need to extract the main file from the rom/radio and rename it to LEO.img, place it on the root of your SD card and turn on the phone whilst holding vol. down.
Check this thread for a more complete set of instructions.
Hope that helps......

Have youctried a different USB cable to see if you can keep a connection then? Youmight have a bad USB cable. If trying another USB cable and different USB ports does not help you might have a faulty USB port on your HD2 in that case you can still use your SD card tocflash Windows Mobile ROMs and radios but if you flash a official ROM via SD card it reverts HSPL so be aware of that as you will not be able to get HSPL back if you have a faulty USB port on your HD2. Go to the link to lean about flashing via SD card.

Thanks for replies and suggestions... I did try different usb ports, but haven't try different cable, I'll do that tomorrow, first thing I get myself one. I'm not planing to flash official rom, I plane to flash another custom, as soon as I deal with this radio interrupted. I do hope it's not faulty usb port of my phone though ...and if it is, that it can be fixed...

If it is a faulty USB port for your HD2 it can be fixed but by replacing the USB port if needed or just resoldering some on your existing one but from what I read it is really best done by a proffesional, go to the link below and read through thatcthread as you will se what I mean, it is only 3 pages long so read the intior thread it is not much reading.

The easiest way to fix a bad USB port on a HD2 is to replacecthe intior main board.
Thanks for the thread, T-Macgnolia, if it turns out to be faulty usb port on HD2 - I have no intentions to fix it myself, it'll go to service right away ... I do hope it's not, though, as I never had a problem charging my phone, it charged good and fast until this "accident" . I like to believe that it's not gonna take a new motherboard in order to be able to use my phone in the way I used to, and cause of which I'm addicted to it

I hope you don't have to have the main board changed either. Bit know this in the USB port on the HD2 has I think 4 pins in it two are for charging and two are for data and it sounds like your data pinswould be the ones with a issue if your USB port is bad as you still have to wait until you can try a different USB cable. At any rate though I wish you the best of luck.
Ok people, I've sorted it out ... Lucky me - no faulty usb port on HD2, no faulty cable, and, no faulty HD2 ... I've flashed a different radio from sd card, and also rom, and now - connectivity with my pc is - never better ... Even ActiveSync is working like it hasn't been in 6 months, hahahhhh ... Point is - it was my pc punishing me for playing with it's registry, few nights before ... I was really confused, cause HD7 had excellent connectivity with my pc, but HD2 really bad, so I really thought there was something wrong with my beloved HD2 ... Than, I remembered I've messed with my registry the other night, and deleting some non-existing pocket pc paths in it... So, I repaired my windows on pc, and now everything works like a charm .... What can I say - curiosity can have very high price, sometimes .... But - fortunately I'm lucky, as it gets ...
I didn't think not having Mass Storage USB would suck this much. Just about every large file I transfer errors out.
This is a huge problem.
This happening to anybody else?
Fixes?
Is your SDcard formatted in fat32? I saw that with a 32GB thumb drive that I had.
What is the suggested large file compatible format to use with Android?
Card is FAT32.
I can't even put the files on phone storage.
Camera mode does the same thing.
define what you consider a large file and i will see if my phone has the same trouble.
I can transfer data from the phone to pc via usb connect but can't go the other way.
I can't transfer data from the pc to the phone via usb connection.
someone please help!!!!

are you using the usb cable that came with the phone or an aftermarket cable?
i had this problem before with an aftermarket cable that was solved by using my usb cable that came with the phone. I couldnt tell you why one worked and the other didnt though.
fat32 will not take files above 4GB its just not possible you prbly need to reformat your memory card inside of your gs3
I'm having the same problem - I am using an old samsung usb cable though. I can't get the picture files off of the phone via ptp nor can I get the usb mtp driver to install. I'll have to try when I get home to use the cable it came with. I'm wondering if the port on my s3 might be bunged a bit too.

No, it's the cable - I'm thinking the pinout changes for MHL are making it touchy about old cables.

Might have to stick with transfering via kies air for a bit until I confirm that idea..
I can transfer little files back and forth but anything over 400mb or so gets about half way and fails.
I have not had any trouble with the WebSharing app on the market even with very large files...
Sent from my SGH-T999 using XDA Premium HD app
Only the exFAT format is able to accept files larger than 400 mb. FAT32 will not work.
*I meant 4000 mb, my bad.

Not sure what's going on. I just transferred a 700 mb file to the phone and then back to the computer without any trouble. This was using the cable that came with the phone on windows 7 64 bit home premium.

just my two cents..... but i can transfer a 1.95GB zip file both ways
to both internal and external memory
I have trouble transferring a large amount of files such as backing up my internal storage.

Hi Random, here are a few things I'd try:
1. Try one or two different USB cables and see if you get the same results.
2. When the phone is connected to PC, you need to go to the phone and under the system notification, specify what you want the USB Preferences to be (Use USB for: File Transfer, USB Tethering, etc) just to make sure.
I can't help with the OTG as I haven't used it yet, but maybe one of the other members can shed some light on the issue. Good luck and I hope you get it sorted.

I've used another cable, it's still the same.
But our desktop can detect it.
usb drivers
since your desktop can detect it try this.
connect it to your desktop and go into device manager and find what USB driver is being used.
now check if that driver is also present on the laptop. if not copy it over and restart the laptop.
