Hi all.
Is there a way to access the FAT32 partition on the SD through the USB cable (the same way I used to do with the Magic)?
Disabling the USB debug mode won't help!
Thanks.
Yes, just plug it in and there should be a notification asking if you want to 'mount' the storage. When you mount the storage it will become visible to your PC just as if it was a usb memory stick.
so for the idiot's guide (not calling you and idiot, but you clearly have not read the manual).
When you plug the usb cable in, at the top of the phone screen there should be a usb sign.
drag the notification bar down.
there should be a line for usb stating click to mount.
Click.
A popup will ask you do you want to mount, click 'mount'
DONE!
Please remember to unmount when disconnecting. do this either by ejecting the drive in windows OR the same method as mounting but the popup will ask you to unmount.
but again again again this is in the manual/.
And before I get any H8's saying you need to mount to access the manual, its also on the HTC site. so Raspberry to you.
It simply doesn't work. I did read TFR!
OK.
Are you trying this at work? It's possible through a windows reg change to disable the usb ports, my place does this but can be fixed with a simple reg script.
Have you another usb drive to try in the port you are using?
Just checking that your connecting it to the back of the computer as they are the main ports (ones directly connected to your mobo) as sometimes the front ones wont work if not connected/enabled.
If you do have another device/drive and this works in the port then bad times.

It would be more useful if you could tell us what it does do, rather than that it simply doesn't work.
1. When you plug the USB cable in, do you get "USB Connected" notification? If so, when you bring this up, do you get the option to mount the SD card?
2. Have you tried a different USB cable and/or connecting the phone to a different PC?
3. Have you tried with a different SD card in the phone?
4. Have you repartitioned your SD card in any way? (i.e. added swap, ext3 whatever?)
Regards,
Dave
1. No, I don't get any notification at all.
2. Different cables, same result. USB memory stick and USB hard drive work on the very same port.
3. Yes, same result.
4. Yes, I did the "usual" 3 partitions.
5. I'm running MoDaCo 2.1
FIXED while troubleshooting!
6. I switched to my Nokia DKE-2 cable and it magically worked.
7. The old cables used to work with ADB but not in storage mode.
8. All three cable can charge the phone.
9. I presume a problem with the cable, but have no idea about the nature.
Anyway, the thing was really not working at all. Please give first a look to my first post. I already tried a number of things before posting.

Just as a matter of interest, did you try with the cable that came with the phone? At the very least that should be working too.
Thus far, I've had no problems with 3 or 4 different USB cables, but I have seen issues like this in the past where cables didn't have all pins connected.
Regards,
Dave
I've lost my original cable some thousands kilometers away from home.
This is why I got using my digital camera and USB hard drive min-USB cables.
I got no problem so far apart of not being able to mount the phone's SD.
I presume a weird wiring problem. Maybe this thing can be put in a FAQ.
I have a TMO HD2 US version. I am running 32-bit Win7 Ultimate with WMDC 6.1 I can sync the phone with the bluetooth on. I could have the factory TMO usb attached it will charge but not recognize the device. I attempted to update the latest OEM ROM and it just got to the multi color bar screen.I have tried the device on several other pc's with no luck...Windows 7 32bit,XP SP3,no luck. What gives is there a way I can update without the usb cable? Any input would help. Thanks in advance.
Here is a link to my tutorial on how to flash via the SD Card.
Have you tried a different cable? If there is a problem with the phones USB connection, take it back and have it replaced.
whenever you plug in the phone it comes up with 2 options to either connect via active sync or use as mass storage. could this be the problem? hope this helps
Thanks guys!
I am going to try another cable first...i traded my... need I say... iPhone for the HD2 that I have now. I must say its different.I am definitely not happy about the sync issue.MS,TMO both are claiming they have not had that issue. I doubt that TMo will repair or replace a second hand phone purchase. :-(
try restarting your computer and phone, I occasionally have this problem as well, that seems to fix it
It was the cable!!! The T-Mobile
The T-Mobile micro usb cable is JUST FOR Charging. I picked up a data/charge cable at Target for around $15.Problem solved. Many thanks for the replies.

My cable works just fine for data and charging both. I didn't know that different types even existed
I'm heading to Target now to see if I can find an extra cable though, everywhere else is charging $19.99 and up (the Shack wanted $34.99!).

Well I would say this is the best place to start then...
-Different USB port
-Different computer
-Different cable
If you had already done the first two, then it's obviously worth trying the last

Found the fix, not sure how it will work on Vista or 7, but on xp, if you have set on your phone to default always auto connect, you then have to manually activate the phone in driver details under properties of "mycomputer" then device manager
So I can't get my desktop OR laptop running XP Pro 32 to even recognize the phone. As in no audio plays and nothing appears in the system tray. Tried with/without debugging mode, installed the samsung drivers etc. The phone doesn't even show up in device manager at all- not even as something unrecognizable. Its as if the port is dead. The phone does 'ding' though and charge ok so it is receiving power... though nothing at all appears in the android notification tab when connected. Any ideas or anyone know of any apps on the pc or android side to take a closer look at whats happening on the bus?
The only way that I can get it to work is to put it in media mode. It shows up as a media device in Win7. If I put it on, "ask every time" or whatever it doesn't work and in mass storage mode it shows up as two unreadable drives, they are grayed out in Explorer... Basically...don't use the "ask every time" for USB function.
This function seems like such a simple thing, not sure why Samsung has so many issues with it considering they have been making media devices for a long time.
Anyway... do you have access to a newer OS to at least rule that out as a cause. Not saying it shouldn't work with XP 32 but just something to check out.
I was having similar issues at first. I take it adb doesn't work either? Well my fix was to delete my whole Android SDK folder, then I redownloaded it (though I just kept the "tools" folder this time). Then I downloaded "USBDeview" (google it) to delete every USB driver that had to do with android (basically just left the printers, HID, and my Sansa drivers), restarted, then I downloaded the samsung drivers from the thread on here, plugged my phone in and manually pointed the driver search to the drivers.
ADB and Mass Storage has been working fine since. All I can tell you is to keep checking cause there's something you're missing, I also thought to myself "what the heck else can I do?" since I had done each one of those steps previously, but maybe I just had to do them all together. Good luck.
another possible solution is to change cables if you're not using the samsung provided cable - some cables are charger only (no data) - some of the motorola cables are charger only and we've already had one poster that had that issue
I couldn't get it to work at first either. I more or less did this.
I plugged in my phone. I did not enable mass storage mode on my phone. Walked away and let my PC think for a while. I came back and I noticed I had two new drives. I then enabled mass storage mode and could connect.
Two of my machines I had to do this. I'm not sure why it wasn't instant, but it just took a bit of patience and walking away from the machine to let it think for a while before I guess it installed the drivers and made its peace with the fact it wasn't the G1 any more.
Say into voice dialer "Open SD card" -> check "Enable USB mass storage". That works if port on PC is OK.
If it's a driver issue, open device manager and uninstall the usb ports. Unplug everything from usb and when you reboot the computer it will automatically reinstall the usb ports.

I ran into the same issue. It was a problem with the USB cable I was using. As soon as I tried a different cable it worked fine.

I second this, I forgot my sammy cable at work on Friday and on way home stopped at T-Mo and picked up a charger w/cable and realized right away this was just a charging cable as soon as I connected it to my PC. I'm returning the cable back to T-Mo tonight. At least I was able to charge my phone over the weekend.
UPDATE: You guys are right, it is the goddamn cables! I bought an extra wall charger + cable at the t-mobile store and was using that at home. I had left the original in-box cable at work. Tried the cable at work today and now the drives pop up. Still don't appear writeable but I can look into that when I have time, probably the typical driver issue. As far as I can tell those separate cables are power only! $15 for a two wires + dc adapter. Thanks Samsung. Grr.
i suspect the mfgrs have gone to charge only cables to help keep folks from tethering - just a suspicion
if the "drives" are popping up, have you "mounted" the phone (pull down notification bar, clik on USB connected and it should give you a window asking to mount the cards or drive)
FYI....The Rocketfish cables you get from Best Buy do not work. They are only capable of charging.
@larryccf...I don't think certain manufacturers are implementing this on purpose so we can't tether. I think their just being cheap.
Where I got my cables on the cheap! and my problem.
I got my cable at monoprice.com. Check it out that is a 10 foot usb cable for $1.69 and it works for me. They have different lengths and even some colors. Now my Mass Storage issue . . .
My Mass Storage via USB works fine unless I enable "USB Debugging" which one of my apps needs to work. Once debugging is enabled I loss the ability to see my sd card and internal storage on my XP netbook. any ideas????
Same Problem
I have the exact issue, tried many things have'nt found a fix yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks,
crx

Yes phone is mounted, and can be seen w/o usb debugging enabled. However with usb/debugging on it does not read the phone being connected. Meaning that I cannot connect to ADB which is my main concern.

Ain't that the truth!
If you are running windows (x86 or x64), it would be wise to install the samsung drivers. I was having this exact problem, but as soon as I installed the drivers from samsung, viola!
I had the latest drivers from google, and they did not work for me.
Here is a link to the thread containing the links to the drivers, thanks to TGA_Gunnman:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
Let me start by stating that I have read through pages of various threads on here & haven't found an answer... Or at least I haven't found an answer in laymen's terms that I can understand. So, if/when offering help, please break it down for me a little. Thank you!!
I just purchased a Nexus 7. When I plug it in to my Windows 7 PC, nothing happens. It doesn't install any device drivers. It doesn't appear anywhere in my device manager. Nothing. After reading several posts, I downloaded drivers from Asus's site, but now I don't know how to install them. I came across this comment from "MrTrackZed" in another thread (one I can't yet post in):
"After you download the driver, unzip/extract its contents. Then you go to your device manager on your PC, and plug in your Nexus. You'll see it with a yellow exclamation point, right click it and select update driver. You can then select this driver manually. Also, if using Wug's root method, make sure you configure the fastboot driver as well. I don't have my PC with me, but I believe its step 6 in the driver install process. Its all very easy, sounds confusing, but its not. Good luck! "
I totally understand that, but what do I do if the device isn't even showing up in the device manager? I've plugged it in to 3 different computers (2 windows 7 & one Windows XP) and it does nothing on any of them. The device does show that it's charging, but nothing else. Please help. This is driving me nuts. Oh, and I've done all of this while having debugging on & off. Same results.
~Clint
U may just have a bad device! I have seen posts similar to this and after a device exchange they have no problems.
The fact that It doesn't register on three different computers means that or a bad cable.

When you plugin your phone, on your phone, you need to click USB Storage, did you do that?
Another thing to try is to enable Debuging on your phone, and install drivers, to check if device manager can detect it.
We have a package contains the right drivers for your device, you may want to download and try it. We have Nexus 7 users works fine.

This is for our vmlite vnc server, but it may help you, as it installs USB drivers.

I did as you suggested & installed both the PC client & downloaded the app from google play. Still nothing... The device works perfectly except for this one issue. It's making me crazy!
can you run this command to debug? (open a command window on Windows)
"c:\program files\vmlite\AndroidAppController\adb.exe" devices
what is the output message?
It just occured to me that some USB cable is charging only, this morning, I got such a cable, there is no USB device showing up in device manager with that USB cable, once I switched to another data cable, it works.
You may want to change to another usb cable to test.
Problem Identified
Okay, so after much research, I think the problem has been identified. The one thing that I've found in common with all the threads that discuss this problem is that we've all, at one point or another, used a USB car charger to charge our N7. I've found that most cheap USB chargers only put out at about 1 amp. The N7 is trying to pull 2 amps. This is causing the USB cable to overheat & damage the USB connector on the N7. Unfortunately, once the damage is done, it's done. Fortunately for me, I purchased my N7 at a local retailer that had a 30 day return policy & they gave me a new N7. It works great & I've ordered a 2.1 amp USB car charger to prevent this from happening in the future.

Thank you for the reply, but I am using the OEM N7 USB cable. Plus, I used 3 other cables to no avail. See my previous comment though. I've identified the error.
Sorry for the bump, but are you saying that (under)charging at 1A essentially breaks the N7? Wow. You'd think it would break if you'd feed it 5A or so, not at less than 2!
I think I'm having the same issue now. I can charge, but no debugging for me since my computer doesn't even notice a USB device. Must have happened in my car once when I was trying to charge my phone and my N7 at the same time. (Since then I can't charge any phone at all in the car using that charger.) Let's see if I can find the warranty slip.
Good Morning All,
I had a quick question. When I connect my pixel Xl to my Windows 10 pc I get the drop down android system option to change from USB charging to file transfer.
On my Essential when I connect it makes the noise where windows notices it but on my phone I don't have the option to change from charging to file transfer.
I'm sure it is something I am missing but would appreciate any input. I believe it is a driver issue as my other windows 10 laptop recognizes it and I am able to change to the transfer files option.
I checked device manager and it is not showing up under portable devices.
Thanks
On my HTC 10, you can make the change manually by going to Settings>>More(last option under Wireless and networks)>>USB connection

Yeah, I was thinking there was a way in developer options as well, but I don't have my cable with me so it wasn't showing up.
I have an older laptop that makes the "recognition noise/ring" when I plug in my phone, but it takes like 2-3 minutes before the screen pops up asking what I want to do with it. Don't know if that could be your issue, but you may try just letting it sit for a few before unplugging it and see if that changes anything.
Or, it could be just like you say, bad driver.

It is usbc and only have one.
I plug my pixel in on the same port and it shows up in portable devices. With the essential plugged in my computer makes the noise that it is connected but it does not show up any where in device manager.
I uninstalled the driver with my pixel plugged in and re plugged in the essential still no go. I plugged in the essential and the driver was installed. It is strange as it shows up under my other windows 10 pc just fine.
I had the same problem and I eventually got it to work by using a USB A to C cord, not my usbc port on my laptop.
Had the same issue last night, turns out for me my computer recognized the phone and used the adb interface driver, had to go into device manager, Uninstall the driver associated with my essential phone, and then replug the phone in for it to be accessible via mtp

I also noticed that it didn't work in a USB 2.0 port for me, only in a 3.0 port. And my front facing 3.0 port on my desktop that I use for flash drives didn't work either, so not sure if there is some long cable signal integrity issue there, but USB 3.0 port was the only way I got it recognized via my computer
I did use this USB Device Viewer from Microsoft and found that it is showing up with this error.
Though not sure how I'm supposed to resolve it. https://imgur.com/w1tz12s
It is at least showing that it is connected.
Maybe I'm not understanding but on mine when I plug into PC the pull down menu shows charging and then I tap on that and get a menu that has file transfer and 3 others and I select file transfer. Have you tried that?
