[Q] How to update between Updates on SD builds Americanandroid - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hi All,
I apologize im a noob just learning my way around android and was wondering how to perform this update properly without messing anything up. I have done some searching and found some brief explanations, but was wondering if someone could possibly give me a little more thorough "how to" explanation on how to update between SD builds. Specifically AmericanAndroid 2.3.5 to the newest 2.3.7 American SD build. From what I understand i have to copy and replace the "old" android folder with the "new" update one and overwrite everything except the data.img file?? if this is correct again, if someone could explain in nooby words id appreciate it! Thanks in advance!!

Yep this is completely correct. Just overwrite all the files but keep the old data.img.

So i just copy and paste new Android folder into the old one, then at that point prompts will come up asking if i want to overwrite them, and click yes to all of them except for data.img?? or is there another method? Do i remove the new data.img file from the new before overwriting? Also, will This will keep all my themes and homescreen configuration the same? or will it wipe out everything? would you happen to know of a thread that explains this in detail by chance? Thanks for your help.

Yeah that works just fine, just make sure you don't overwrite the old data.img or you could lose all your data. In fact, you should probably make a backup of it to guarantee its safety, just copy and paste it onto your hard drive/USB somewhere. Everything will remain the same as before, just the build will be updated with new features from the new version.

You need to move one of the data files into the android folder then delete the 2 folders - try that.
thanks for the reply, still is stopping at the boot stage... am I going to need to flash a new rom? thanks!

You are aware that files are to be copied to a folder, in general called android, and not to the root of your SD card?

Do you have any tips for switching from a ROM with Sense to one without? I am thinking about trying a more stable ROM because the Sense seems to be causing me issues.
Would the Sense related settings be crossed out, and I would uncheck the crossed out options during the restore? Did I understand that correctly from the video?
Also, you touched on the Apps installed from the market. Do you have to install those manually? Or, will Titanium Backup restore those for you?
In need of help
I have hd2 running gingerbread from magldr and would like to switch back to the original rom so i can send it in for warranty .. any help would be greatly appreciated.....thanks
Nice guide, many thanks from me too!!!
Don't forget to backup the SD Card
One other thing that is probably worth pointing out: Once you have backed everything up, you should probably copy it off the SD card to another computer. I read somewhere about someone doing something that wiped out their SD card, and they lost their backups on it.
To back it up, I copied the TitaniumBackup directory from the SD card to my laptop. Also, I copied the clockworkmod directory because i had backed up the ROM as a whole from the AD Recovery.

restore backup

I updated to mango beta and followed the steps to backup and now that the firmware update is out I went back to restore and it doesn't show up in Zune. I read the post about where backups are located and it show my files there that I did do a backup. Any hints on what I am doing wrong
I've got the same problem..
From what I have read, after the back up has been made you need to save it somewhere else on your computer too, because the Zune software will overwrite it. Im hoping that there is a way to get a stock back up or recover overwritten once. If anyone knows anything else that would be awesome!
Hopefully you guys are official devs... As Microsoft will offer you assistance if you are...
Otherwise you will most likely have to save whatever backups you have an hope that the community helps you. The problem with that is you'll probably not get the firmware until around Mango officially comes out and the hacker community starts dealing with all those who ignore the warnings from Microsoft...
MS docs were pretty clear.. yo, after you make the restore point.. make a copy of it.

I have three backups/restore points saved in my premangostate folder though, Im not sure what Im doing wrong..
Could you attach one of your restore points here so I may take a look at it? Please attach the oldest one, also, if I get it to work I'll give you a step-by-step instruction on how to do it.

I'm only able to provide a part of the file itself, the whole thing is about 3.8 GB but since megaupload only lets me share a certain amount I put in a small sample of the data files, perhaps you could just look at it and see if there is any file missing from it, I would be great.. I separated out the .dat files from the other folders it gets housed in..

first check the SD builds forum - easier as no flashing required, then pick one (e.g. ACA my personal favorite), read the installation instructions (usually just create Android folder on your SD card, then copy the build there), then run using any file manager clrcad.exe and haret.exe which are the android folder, wait for 10-30 minutes until 1st boot is finished, and done
hi thanks for that do you have direct links on these you could put up

links are marked by brownish font by default, check my previous post,
as for SPL, HSPL etc., you don't need to bother as long as you run Android from SD, that's the beauty of SD builds, enjoy full functionality of android, without the hassle and risk of bricking your device
some general FAQs here and here, but if you want to start fast, you can read those later, installing an SD build is safe

That SPL and radio version are fine, just download the ROM, extract it, click on CLRCD, then HARET, then you're running Android.

first boot can take up to 20-30 minutes, as the data file (default = 2GB) is created, if nothing happens after that time, remove the battery (fastest way of resetting the device) and try again

what's more to know for the start?
- no need to reinstall from now on, it's just that for now your device will always restart to WinMo, however: find yourself so called "android loader" to automate android loading, there's few of those to choose from, e.g. Android Loader v6.0
- connect android with your google account so your contacts and emails are synced (Settings / Accounts etc...)
- install Battery Monitor Widget, so you always know how much mA your device uses and how much battery is left,
- also search xda for tips on conserving battery power (e.g. disable 3G if not needed, switch off GPS, tweak backlight autobrightness in CM Settings etc.)
- be aware that for now the USB file transfer does not work, to copy files to your HD2 use WinMo or Card Reader or File Expert
- backup often: 1. invest in Titanium Backup, 2. from time to time copy data.img to your PC
- browse through the ACA FAQ and thread (I know it may be hard to read all 14995 messages at once)

All apps are installed on your card, the whole idea of an SD build is that WinMo still sits in ROM, while Android basically consists of two files (sitting in the SD\Android folder) which are mounted at the start: system.ext2 (all system files and apps) and data.img (all user apps and settings). From user point of view you won't notice the difference. Additionally, once you run out of space in your data.img, you can always resize it, there are tools for that, but lets put it aside for now

all links are in my previous post, click on the brown text "Android Loader v6.0" to open,
installation is standard for WinMo: while in Windows Mobile, copy the .cab file to your SD Card and run from within any file manager, then it will guide you, also when in doubt search its thread for more info
i have downloaded it there is no cab file when i extract it from the zip folder.

you have this file: File Type: mskip_Android_Loader_V6.0 Final.cab? that's the one, do not try to unpack it on your PC, just copy to SD Card and then run from there

do i have to be in winmo for this

how to use an old rom on your new phone..

My old EVO took a swim but I was able to save my microSD card. I got a new phone and just today was able to root it. I want to reinstall my old custom rom onto this phone, but understand there are some things that need to be changed/deleted/whatever, like my WIMAX keys and the like. Maybe I missed it, but could someone point me to what exactly needs to be done to reuse an old backed up rom on new hardware?
Thanks,
Paul

I would suggest against using it bbut if you feel you must then definitely remove the wimax key info out of the nandroid. The issue is the img's are more than likely signed and you will probably get an error when trying to restore. Which rom is is that you are trying to restore. IMHO - think your best cause of action is to just flash from fresh especially since you dont know what other problems may arise from that old rom.
You dont want to start a I just restored my old rom and think I bricked my phone thread... People will really bash you....lol

Honestly, I don't recommend doing that, as you can brick the device cuz system files have changed.
What you should do is re-download the rom itself, flash it in recovery. if you backed up your launcher settings to the sd card, re-install all the apps. Then from titanium backup restore apps and data, NOT system settings, or you will get problems.
i was going to do this but decided to just flash CM7 fresh.

You dont want being a little lazy to cost you your phone... I agree with just flashing the rom again which is probably on your sd card
then thats exactly what I'll do. Thanks all!
