how to use an old rom on your new phone.. - EVO 4G General

My old EVO took a swim but I was able to save my microSD card. I got a new phone and just today was able to root it. I want to reinstall my old custom rom onto this phone, but understand there are some things that need to be changed/deleted/whatever, like my WIMAX keys and the like. Maybe I missed it, but could someone point me to what exactly needs to be done to reuse an old backed up rom on new hardware?
Thanks,
Paul

I would suggest against using it bbut if you feel you must then definitely remove the wimax key info out of the nandroid. The issue is the img's are more than likely signed and you will probably get an error when trying to restore. Which rom is is that you are trying to restore. IMHO - think your best cause of action is to just flash from fresh especially since you dont know what other problems may arise from that old rom.
You dont want to start a I just restored my old rom and think I bricked my phone thread... People will really bash you....lol

Honestly, I don't recommend doing that, as you can brick the device cuz system files have changed.
What you should do is re-download the rom itself, flash it in recovery. if you backed up your launcher settings to the sd card, re-install all the apps. Then from titanium backup restore apps and data, NOT system settings, or you will get problems.

i was going to do this but decided to just flash CM7 fresh.

You dont want being a little lazy to cost you your phone... I agree with just flashing the rom again which is probably on your sd card

then thats exactly what I'll do. Thanks all!

i know,i know i am soooo noob,lol
but i noticed alot of you guys have alot move free space than i do but with more programs/apps/games etc. installed
i've heard alot about this "HARD-SPL" APP, should i have installed that after i unlocked my phone & installed the Apps or should i have installed some of these roms to save more space? gee i'm a noob,i've never had a windows based phone. Ooh BTW i have a 1gb storage card, hopefully gettin into a 4 0r 8gb.
my friend even has an app which he doesn't tell me where he got it or show me on his phone the name.but when he opens his keyboard and closes it,it responds quickly into landscape and back to portrait,REAL FAST. what App is that..he doesn't wanna share his knowledge, that is why i told him about this site but can't find it..wow he newbie..but anyways, hope to learn more & more from you guys...ALL YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME WITH ALL YOUR WORK ON APPS/PROGRAMS,KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
Thanks In Advance for all the help...be safe fellas
G'day Joee and welcome. 1st, the reason other people have a lot more free memory is because they're running a cooked rom... This means that all the bloat programs/carrier crap has been removed and other better apps put in. You can find the cooked apps by going to the wiki and doing a search for hermes cooked roms.
Now, so saying, you need to install the Hard SPL onto your phone BEFORE you flash a new os as this decreases the chance of "bricking" your phone or increases the chances of recovering it if you do(we all have this happen sometime).. I'm glad you asked this before becoming another noob begging for help because he's bricked his phone and cant recover. As I say though, there is still a chance of permanently bricking, no guarantees. If you decide to flash your phone up you need to be aware that if something goes wrong and it has to be returned you may find your warranty voided. However ther are ways to return your phone back to the stock rom if you look.
You may read about radio roms and think you need to flash yours up to the latest... WRONG.... Depending where you are and who your carrier is depends on what radio rom you should have. If you find it works fine, DONT TOUCH IT as mast bricks are caused by flashing the radio rom and having something go wrong during the flash. 9 times out of 10 you cant recover, even with Had SPL.....
Now you're sufficiently afraid of flashing, Please read Mr Vanx's guide as this will REALLY help if you decide to do it. I personally recommend flashing using the sd card method as it is safer and you dont need to kill anyone who even looks at your computer while its flashing. Using the computer can cause hassles with people accidently hitting reset buttons, pulling out usb cables or just a good old fashioned blackout. SD card method just relies on a file on your sd card and the fact you have 50% battery power.. You can find out how in the wiki...
Anyways, if I haven't frightened you off completely, I would suggest , as a first rom, TNT SE. Its a fairly stable rom with a heap of 3rd party apps or if you want LOTS of memory go with a lite rom... Anything from Schapps, Matt_KR(also known as pandora), Faria, K's Pays or PDAViet (many more but you get the drift). Wait for a little while until you get experienced with wm06 before trying wm6.1 - still has teething problems.
Well, Welcome & Happy Flashing......
ultramag69, your pointing me the right way, thanks!!!! also thanks for responding to my thread,i'm glad i ran into this site. you guys are doing lots of amazing things with alot of the apps/progs,all in all you guys are AWESOME!!. i'm glad you answered me before i would had made a mistake and brick my phone. As for the carrier i'm using, i'm using " IMMIX WIRELESS", i think they are associated with Keystone. so once i "reset my phone to factory settings i use "hard-spl" & use a rom, i automatically lose all the "junk" AT&T add to their phones. yeah, free space i guess,COOOL. Oh BTW,what hard-spl do i use? V7 or V9? probably will be hard to find the "lite Rom" as you suggested.
thanks alot for the help again & hopefully learn alot more before i actually do the "HARD-SPL" flash & go modding happy.
Ok, you DONT need to reset to factory. you can just Hard SPL your phone straightway. You can then install a rom as well. Just remember that when you flash a rom you will wipe everything off the phone.
As to what Hard SPL to use, if you read about each one you will find that ver. 9 is for developers, people who muck about and improve things on our phones. We get the benefits later, but if you just wanna start off easy to flash and upgrade I'd go with ver.7. You can upgrade SPL's later if you start to get into flashing hardcore...
If you did some reading you would've found this out. I like helping people, I was where you are now once, but some people DO get nasty if a question is asked with you not looking through the forum first. Chances ae your question has been asked AND answered multiple times over. Word to the wise......
AS for the flashing.... flash Hard SPL off your computer. I find this easiest as it literally takes about 2 secs.... Howver for the rom I would suggest the SD card method(It's my personnel favourite)as its safer than with the pc. If you follow the guide you will need to backup your sd card then format it fat 32... If you've already formatted fat 32 and want to keep all the apps installed and pics etc... on there I've found you can just install the .nbh file directly onto the card WITHOUT formatting and loosing anything. Just remember to ename it to "hermimg.nbh". Put your hermes into bootloader with the card installed and it will automatically detect and start the flash process. Follow the prompts.... MAKE SURE YOU HAVE GREATER THAN 50% BATTERY POWER... very important..
Happy flashing and good luck.....
thanks again
ultramag69, thanks alot & i'm sorry if i asked q's that were answered b4, i guess i would i have to search with the correct wording 0r word...once again thanks for the help..i know i will learn alot from every1 here and who knows i'll be like you guys in no time
thanks again
thank you very much, did my 1st flash rom,i used Faria R32...nice,fast & good storage..you pointed the way for me & i thank you for the help...like i always say,YOU GUYS ALL ROCK!!!

How to create a custom ROM ?

Hi there,
i have been around here since i got my X1 and got quite some info from these great forums. Now that the Hard SPL is out i wonder if it is possible to make a ROM of my current Phone state, like an Image with all working stuff that i can just reflash whenever stuff goes wrong / i dont like a custom Rom etc.
I simply dont want to reinstall everything when i do a hard reset for whatever reason.
Is there a way to do this for the X1 ?

Spb backup works really well and is easy to use. only 25usd. I think you can download a trial.
SPB Backup
does that also backup all installed applications/settings and stuff like that ?

Well the fact that you were wasted says the guy who wrote the instructions did a damn good job lol. Props to them.
Second go download the Pre-Kitchen from geekfor.me
This will let you put those craptastic sprint apps back on the phone..but i guess if you use it you use it.
There is no getting contacts back that were not "google" contacts. Google contacts are backed up in the cloud. If you login to your Gmail if you see them there, they will be back on the phone. Its also tons easier to reenter them on Gmail than on the phone..big screen and keyboard and what not.
flashing simply means loading a new ROM on to the ROM chip...well we don't have a "Rom Chip" persay as they did years ago. Just into that part of the dev block. No big deal, I digress.
The benefits of the rom you have Vary depending on what one you have loaded. Personally I stick with Fresh. Seems faster to me. However fresh 1.1 kind slowed down so I went back to 1.0
well as far as getting everything back there is really not much you can do unless you did a nandroid backup before you flashed fresh 1.1. I know it sucks but I did the same thing when I first got my phone. I would suggest that as you rebuild your contacts make sure that you put them in as google contacts instead of phone that way if you wipe it on accident again then you wont lose your contacts.
as far as the point in running a different rom is mainly that they tend to be faster than the stock build because they have been optimized nad some things have been taken out that slow the phone down. and some cool stuff has been added like wifi teather and such.
now for getting some stock apps back. download the fresh kitchen it works great and is easy to use.
what is this kitchen i always hear about anyway??? can i select what apps i reinstall???? cuz i definitly dont want them all.... i actually remember thats why i did all this to get rid of thos sonsabitches.... also how can i get rid of sprint apps that are on here that i still dont want like music for instance??
is there a way to root and use sprint roms but remove most of the apps i dont want??
dam Kcarpenter beat me to it lol I wanted to be helpful for once
also i have gotten my contacts back... i was more concerned about the apps i lost and cant find cuz i dont remember all the apps i had

the kitchen is a program that was created to allow you to do common tasks witout having to actually use the code
yes you can pick and choose what apps you want to reinstall and it also now has the option to remove any file.
k i downloaded kitchen v2 how do i install it???
Also sorry for asking all these questions.... I am on a very very very tight schedule in winter and dont have time to really look into/research this stuff on my own this time of year
I also downloaded lockscreens and am still tryin to figure out how to install both of them
just extract it where you want it then run the .exe
the kitchen will allow you to install the lockscreens as well just move the zip files into the themer folder that you extracted for the kitchen
so i extract to a folder on my comp then run the program on comp and plug usb into phone etc.??
yes extract it to a folder plug the phone to the comp then just run the .exe and the kitchen will open. flipz has put in prompts telling you what each tool does the first time you go to use it
yea im just totaly not understanding how to intall the lockscreen... i downloaded it ... extracted it to same folder as kitchen... open kitchen went to push file selected system>app>htclockscreen.apk then selected push location as /system/app
and then it starts then gives me error...
could not find part of the path C:/folder/system/app/adb/filepush.bat
please report error.... kitchen closing
You shouldn't unzip lockscreens just point the kitchen to the zip file. It will do the rest.
dont extract the lockscreen file, in there folder that you extracted the kitchen to there should be a file labled "themer" and in that folder there should be a folder named themes, move the zipped file into that folder.
in the kitchen go to the tools&tweaks tool and choose install theme then pick the lockscreen zip file and hit install
should work.
great... got it guys ... thanks
np enjoy the new stuff

Why not use backup software like SPB Backup, Resco Backup etc. You can save all your settings, emails, contacts or just bare rom after installation. Then you can flash another rom and return to previous saved rom at any time you want.

[Q] How to update between Updates on SD builds Americanandroid

Hi All,
I apologize im a noob just learning my way around android and was wondering how to perform this update properly without messing anything up. I have done some searching and found some brief explanations, but was wondering if someone could possibly give me a little more thorough "how to" explanation on how to update between SD builds. Specifically AmericanAndroid 2.3.5 to the newest 2.3.7 American SD build. From what I understand i have to copy and replace the "old" android folder with the "new" update one and overwrite everything except the data.img file?? if this is correct again, if someone could explain in nooby words id appreciate it! Thanks in advance!!

So i just copy and paste new Android folder into the old one, then at that point prompts will come up asking if i want to overwrite them, and click yes to all of them except for data.img?? or is there another method? Do i remove the new data.img file from the new before overwriting? Also, will This will keep all my themes and homescreen configuration the same? or will it wipe out everything? would you happen to know of a thread that explains this in detail by chance? Thanks for your help.

Yeah that works just fine, just make sure you don't overwrite the old data.img or you could lose all your data. In fact, you should probably make a backup of it to guarantee its safety, just copy and paste it onto your hard drive/USB somewhere. Everything will remain the same as before, just the build will be updated with new features from the new version.

Perfect! Thanks. i feel much more confident about going into it. Sorry about all the questions. i usually just go for the most part by trial and error, but being this is my wifes phone, and she hates losing settings etc i wanted to make sure i had this pretty much figured out. again really appreciate all your help!
