So I am currently running Virtuous Affinity and I seem to be having problems with an Android OS bug...but I'm not sure how I can fix it...if there is a fix. Below I have posted a screenshot showing that Android OS has used up over 40% of my battery. I have barely used my phone today other than checking my email a couple of times and one 10 minute phone call. Usually when my battery drains, it is because of the display, but lately I've been having more drain coming from the Android OS processes. The Android OS shouldn't be using that much of the battery should it? Does anyone have any suggestion for a fix?? Should I try a different Kernel...or maybe try using one of the OC/UV apps? Thank you for any suggestions.
I never have any problem with my battery, which rom are you using CM 7 or sense, what kernel?

There doesn't appear to be anything unusual running in the background. I even restart my phone as soon as I unplug it in the morning. But the Android OS thing seems more like a bug.

I am running Virtuous Affinity. It is a sense 3.5 Rom. I believe that the kernel that it came with is the Virtuous V10 kernel. I have not made any overclocking/undervolting modifications as the Rom is supposed to have some of those settings built in.

Yeah...I just don't know if it's necessarily a ROM issue. I had Virtuous Unity which was a pretty stable ROM and the Android OS problem popped up there too. Some days I'm fine when I just reboot in the morning...I can use it pretty heavily and it will last me all day. Other days it seems like something triggers the bug...and I can't pin down any one thing that does it. I'm going to try adjusting the voltage and cpu settings and see if maybe it is a problem with the built in governor. If not, I might switch to CM7 and see if that has the same problem...at least then I'd know that it is definitely an issue with the phone itself.
Android Tasks with Minimize/Exit option
Need to know whatif all Andriod applications have a mandatory Minimize/Exit option, so that the user can decide if they can run in background or be exited??
In case of older applications compatibility issue, perhaps this feature can be built onto the device OS itself.
This shall ennsure only the apps we require to be open parallely shall remain open, remaining can be exited, saving memory, improving performance, and increasing battery life.

I've run into this on different ROM's as well. When I notice the OS eating up the battery, restarting the phone seems to fix the problem. I believe I read around here to try different radio's to see if that helps. I'm in the process of auditioning a few to see if they has any effect.
I have for similar issues in Miui.us 2.2
I tried latest Virtuous unity too, but battery just goes down in the rate of 1hr =10% battery, with background sync off and lowest possible brightness, with no GPS.
In Miui i get 30% more battery life than unity, but still bad life from stock.
Not sure how people are getting morethan a day.
Some one in a thread said it could be the kernel, some say battery calibration(which i already did) and some say its bad battery(its same battery have a day last week with stock ROM).
Anyone, better suggestion?
Are you experiencing high battery drain or high o.s readings in battery stats? I've had this problem for over a year running any aosp rom. I've tried everything. Was told its a rogue app...etc, etc. I finally fixed the problem. Its Google doing it to us. Now for some, the issue doesn't happen but for others simply open your battery stats and look into your high o.s reading by pressing it. In the reading you will see GoogleBackupTransport. That is the culprit. Now using root explorer navigate to system/app then mount system and then locate Google Transport. Its normally right under Google contact sync. Delete it and restart your phone then enjoy your battery again. Check battery stats and you will see your o.s drop. Its taking me awhile to figure it out but it really does work. Try it and tell me your results. Post pics of before and after.

I've wondered the same thing. I can't find anything on it either. Its just something that runs in the background sucking on the juice. It comes bundled in gapps and comes loaded in miui/dxrom. I thought it would screw up logging in on Google or what not but nothing. Also thought it had to do with restoring my apps but if that's the case, I'll restore my own apps than burn battery.

Never had the issue with Sense. That's why I stuck to Sense. I'd flash stock and up to the charts with o.s readings then as soon as I'd go back to Sense it would drop.

That's what I thought.....I just checked on my Sense 3.5 (HoneySmartDroid), and I didn't even see the O.S. on the list of battery uses. But in Sense, Google Maps takes the place of Google Transport in AOSP. It is constantly running in the background, even in multitasking. Kept hearing to clear data then force close, never worked. So I just uninstalled!

Its like a new world for me now. I'd dread flashing stock roms because of that. I've done endless research on the issue with no real results. I've seen people say after charging it reboot the phone and it will lower. I've heard rogue apps did it but I'd never install apps. I've heard to not check in setup to allow Google to keep my phone backed up and it still would climb. No real explanation. I've even seen people with the galaxy nexus complain to Google on their website about high o.s drain and they didn't know. I've deleted it and haven't had a single issue with any Google related stuff.

I downloaded BetteryBatteryStats 1.7.1.0 based on what you said in another thread. My Android OS is high, but it's not a process anyone mentioned.
Under Process, "suspend" is the highest, followed by Tapatalk XDA.
Under Partial Wakelocks, the highest is ConnectivityService (Android System process). All others have nominal usage.
I'm running IceColdInsomnia 7.0 and have only had this issue for the last two days. Before that, I was able to go two full days (light usage) without charging. Yesterday, I couldn't even make 12 hours with light usage, and today I'm already at 60% (before noon...).
Any suggestions? Am I using the correct BetterBatteryStats?
I was so stoked the first few days I used ICI because the battery life was absurdly good. Now I can't even make it to dinner time (or a charger) before it dies.
Forgot to mention, running Shot of Awesomeness kernel. Not sure if this is relevant, since I was using it when the battery life was both absurdly good and absurdly bad.

Kernel sounds like the problem. Try using the stock kernel the rom came with and test it out for a couple days. Kernels take a few days to settle in so that's why you were getting good and then poor results. I saw someone say in the inferno kernel thread that they flashed 1.5 and it fixed o.s. readings. Just read the thread to make sure nothings changed. Too many ics roms to keep up with.

Hey Guys,
I apologize if this is the 2009th time this has been asked my search didnt show what I needed so I thought someone may be able to help.
Nook Color Running CynMod 2.2., everything has been running great for about 6 months, and now my battery has started lasting less and less, so I turned off my bluetooth
but when I look at "Battery Stats" the 2nd biggest user is CELL SERVICE
Can this be turned off and if so what the best way to do so?
I love the mod (I have ICS on my other NC) and its VERY quick, I just need more than 10 hours battery life in sleep.
thanks
J
If I recall correctly... that's just the way CM calculates the battery stats. The NOOK doesn't have a cell radio, so it's never going to use any battery, because it physically can't.
My experience with my feature phone have shown it to gobble up battery with the bluetooth feature on, so I tend to use it sparingly with the NOOK.
You're best bet for getting better battery life is to upgrade your ROM to something more recent - like the MiRaGe KANG build - the more recent kernel's make better use of CPU time and battery efficiency.
NCK
Thanks for the advice
do you think that the ICS release would be more efficient?

Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk 2
It's most likely not a ROM issue. I tried Adams and CM10 and had similar battery life. Make sure you turn off google now (just the cards that need to know your location constantly). It might also be that your update didn't go that well, so you might try a factory reset. It could also be a misbehaving app, so when you do a factory reset, maybe test the ROM before restoring/reinstalling your apps. Also, the more information you give us the better we can help. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I installed the stock factory image 4.0.4 and then waited for the official OTA. I updated and all works well, but I get around 15 hrs on a full charge with some Whatsapp and Facebook use. When I use it more intense with more screentime the battery drains the most. I think a factory reset wont give me more battery life then this, but I know my drain was not so big while I was on ICS.
By the way, which one is the most stable; CW10 (That chocolate river one??) or Jellybelly?

Sounds weird. But also keep in mind that there are still some apps that don't cope very well with JB, and Facebook has never been Androids best friend . But it doesn't make sense that it's only during screen on, most people report issues related to google now and apps doing **** in the background. If you want to switch ROM anyways, I suggest you use Adams Jellybelly, it's mostly stock (less features means less that can go wrong) and it includes thalamus kernel, which is IMHO the best JB kernel at the moment. I do not recommend any CM10 based ROMs if you're after stability. I assume you checked your battery stats and didn't find anything?
Edit: Chocolate river was abandoned when official OTA came afaik, so definitely Jellybelly . Make sure you do a full wipe though, if something's wrong dirty flashing isn't worth it.

Sounds good to me. Downloading Jellybelly now. I checked my battery stats and didn't find anywhing weird. I dont have much apps installed so there is not much that could give issues. When I leave my screen off (at night or while working) the battery life is not that bad. It's weird, but JB is still very fresh and new, so I'll just try some other roms =)

For some reason Kalin is posting new versions of CM10 on G+ now
Since I got my kindle fire last Christmas I've only used a rooted stock roms (whatever was latest). There would be weeks where I wouldn't touch my kindle then one day I would turn it on and still have battery left. It seemed the battery would never die, as if the stock kindle rom would go into some kind of super deep sleep.
Since going to JB I cannot reproduce this. Even if I don't touch the kindle it will run out of power in just a couple days. I went through and turned off all background sync and have it shut off wifi during sleep. Anyone have any tips to get the battery to last when the screen is off?
i have the same issue. the battery runs out so quickly on JB
my wifes battery life went to garbage when i flashed the JB rom on her kindle. She didnt really like the other ones i put on from the ics. but she likes the eye candy jb rom just that the battery life sucks
Ok, sounds like I am not the only one. I love everything about the JB roms except the battery life. I am sure we'll get there one day...
how about the ics roms??
which is the best ics rom??
None of the roms beyond stock give superior battery life. Only stock gives you several days of life. I charge my kindle everyday with daily use. If I want to conserve battery, I shut it off.

The CM7 ROMs have better battery life than the Stock KF ROM.
Anyone know why this is? Did Amazon write some super special sleep code that nobody else can figure out or port to ICS or JB? Or is it just that there isn't enough interest in the feature among xda devs?
I definitely miss this in my KF running JB. It was awesome to be able to use the stock system lightly for weeks between charges. One less device's power needs to be slave to.
Of course, the additional functionality in these custom roms is worth it!

This is what I was wondering too. One thing I noticed with stock is that once I brought the Kindle out of sleep it would take a bit for wifi to come back. I wonder if Amazon wrote something to just shut everything off when the device sleeps. I tried replicating this with JB but couldn't get the same results.
I probably don't have enough data to say for sure, but it seems like there's more to it than just Gingerbread vs ICS/JB. My old phone was running CM7. Would it have lasted for weeks in sleep mode without a charge? Maybe it would have in airplane mode? I never tried it so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. =)
Still, it seems like the stock KF is doing something special to deep sleep. I always was shocked how quickly I could connect to my wi-fi after instantly waking that thing up after a week without touching it and the charge level was still high. It made the KF have battery life comparable to my regular Kindle eReader, which is really saying something since I almost never turn on the wi-fi on my eInk Kindle.
To some extent this issue is less important now because I'm using the heck out of my JB Kindle Fire so I'm burning up battery from regular activity anyway. It is no longer a dust collector. I'm just curious if somebody knows the technical reason that these newer Android versions and/or non-Amazon ROMs are unable to achieve "deep sleep". Is it a lost cause and deep sleep is a thing of the past or do we simply need to wait for a developer who builds that custom JB ROM designed for arctic explorers and wilderness survivalists?

Your kindle fire should still be using deep sleep. The difference is that ics and jb are way more advanced operating systems. Therefore, there is more overhead power usage which equates to less battery life.

I don't think that is the issue.
On my HTC Sensation phone I get better battery life with ICS than I did with stock gingerbread.
I just think the deep sleep in the ics/jb kernel is not as optimized as the one in stock and it has power leaks.
Being more advanced operating systems they could consume more during active use (although I doubt it since ICS/JB use more hardware decoding/acceleration than Gingerbread and that means better battery life) of the device but deep sleep should be the same.
and yet, the question remains: why is it happening, and what to do about it?
I use SetCPU for such purpose in the meantime, with the profile to minimum CPU while with screen off
I think it's more of a kernel issue. The cm7 roms are fantastic for battery but lack all the latest goodies (and speed) built into ICS and JB.

My 2 cents:
Part of it is the kernel. Having been around longer, it's more mature in Gingerbread (CM7 and stock), having been refined/efficient over time.
The other part is features. There's simply more stuff in CM9 (ICS) and CM10 (JB). More stuff = more stuff tasking the system = higher battery drain. This is especially true for stock which is rather stripped-down compared to the more fully-featured custom ROMS.
I was able to squeeze a little more battery life out of JB by using Titanium Backup to "freeze" unnecessary apps such as anything referring to Bluetooth or voice control.
