I have spoke with some people from motorola and asked some questions related to general business but also for upgrading Atrix with ICS.
I'm pasting here some answers without mentioning names, I think that this may show that motorola is doing more than they are ready to publicly say in this moment. To be on safe side You can think about this as rumor.
On Software upgrades, I wasn't aware of an announcement regarding ICS and ATRIX. Although Motorola tends to announce what it will do, not what it won't do, it doesn't mean it won't happen. You may be right, but I don't know the current status... The challenge we have with ATRIX however is Webtop, the full linux OS which sits within Froyo/Gingerbread... I imagine this has delayed any comment. The ideal scenario would be to upgrade all phones to the latest software, and I see that almost all high-end (non web top) phones have had ICS upgrade confirmed.

Agreed, but..... If they actually release a version of ICS for the atrix, it can be DEblurred and retain the webtop. So if one carrier actually releases ICS for the atrix we would be set..

What we need are drivers, webtop and kernels, and they will give us these if this is true
thats a lie dude ;D
Motorola's problem in releasing ICS is not WebTop's fault, is nvidia's! they will not release ICS drivers and sources, not until motorola pays them some good money.
So, our hope for now is that motorola pays for ics on xoom and then make a "hacked driver" of it to the phones with tegra2....

Perfectly acceptable titles:
- Unofficial information from Motorla regarding ICS for the Atrix
- I contacted Motorola regarding ICS for the Atrix, here's the answer
- If you were wondering about Motorola's stand on ICS for the Atrix, here it is
- So I decided to contact Motorola about ICS for the Atrix
Do you understand how the title is misleading enough for it to pass as obvious trolling? Don't apologize, just change the god damned title so people won't read it and get excited over some unofficial comments that do not really say ANYTHING at all about current development for the Atrix.
Thank you and have a good one.

kinda sad that a phone thats been out for almost a year is getting gingerbread before the atrix. i think its ATT's fault. they seem to delay OS updates, at least they did for the captivate. both rogers and bell got froyo months before att. maybe ATT wants to make sure all the features it wants disabled are in working like wifi hotspot?
True. Im already regretting buying my Atrix, too late to return it though. But also Motorola was asking for beta testers to sign up to test 2.3.

Looks like this is for unbranded galaxy s phones though. In the US it takes longer cause the carriers are modding the OS to add all their useless bloatware crappola an it's usually the carrier that pushes the updates not the manufacturer. But hopefully with the update to enable hsupa we get a couple of extra goodies.

it makes sense that the phone that's been out for a year gets it first....
since google released the 2.3 source code, the company has been doing nothing but preparing an update most likely. motorola however, needed to iron out kinks in their initial 2.2 release before they can consider developing a 2.3 OS, and then allowing carriers to modify it to your liking.
obviously you didn't think about what has to be done to come up with a polished 2.3 update before it can be released as an official OTA update. you really can't fault motorola for this not being out yet. it takes a lot of time, testing, and effort to release a finished product.
Raybond, I agree with everything you said, but its hard to cut Motorola any slack for this when the phone should have come with 2.3 in the first place. On top of that they lock the bootloader so we cant get 2.3 working on our own either....

well, the problem is that they probably started dev for the atrix's OS before 2.3 was released, so it would have been even more work, and probably would have caused delays in their release of the phone if they had shipped it with 2.3
I know locked bootloader is a massive drag for 3rd party dev, but you really can't fault moto for any decisions they've made with this phone other than that.

actually you're not skipping honeycomb....
honeycomb is a totally different series in Android OS, tablet-specific series to be precise (3.0)
So, gingerbread is 2.3, and ICS is 2.4. Also, rumour has it that ICS will have full dual-core support, so it would make logical sense for Moto to not waste any time with 2.3 and go straight for dev in 2.4

ice creme sandwich is a blend features of both gingerbread and honeycomb made specifically for phones. you will not be seeing honeycomb on an android phone backed by google. that one reason google is not releasing honeycomb source yet, they dont want to have honeycomb phones out there.

Motorola updated their update page today: forums.motorola.com/pages/00add97d6c
Now says:
ATRIX 4G (MB860): Gingerbread (Android 2.3) rollout began in July 2011. Further plans coming soon.
It was supossed that Atrix 4G was receiving ICS for third quarter (which end this september 30).
I'm really disapointed with Motorola/Google. They says this after they promised an update on February.
"Further plans coming soon."
Still some hope. Let's keep optimism on the Atrix XDA board...
Also its status has been "refreshed"... Which means there's activity.
LOL. I just checked the page last night and it still had the "In development, rollout begins in Q3" message. Now it's as you say.
Ah well. In the long run, it's just a phone that does cool stuff. Many thanks to everyone who figured out how to decrypt the bootloader, open up the capabilities this phone has, and were willing to show the rest of us how to do it. In another year the majority of us will be on another phone anyway, it's the nature of the tech beast.
sad story..., they did change the Canada one to staying on 2.3 and the EU (had no update before) one to the same as the US one
That's a shame. I wanted the goodies ics brings with hardware acceleration and a better use of my lapdock. Hopefully they at least release drivers/kernels so the devs can make it work.

What a horrible title. The fact that a bunch of other phones say "Will remain on Gingerbread" should tell you that the update isn't cancelled yet for the USA Atrix because it says "Further plans coming soon". At this point they are obviously way behind the Q3 date they said before, but if it they weren't working on it I doubt they would tell us that plans were coming later.
Read this article. Soni says they are talking with the different teams and establishing dates they know they can hit. That article is about the Bionic which was planned for early Q3 and now they're going to get it in Q4. Like Soni said, they will be sticking to the dates they set and obviously the Atrix isn't as far along as we all hoped and they can't accurately project a date. Wait until it says all Atrix phones are staying on Gingerbread before posting something like this.
http://www.droid-life.com/2012/09/2...raw-deal-new-motorola-will-try-to-fix-things/
I don't get why the Canadian update was cancelled. This means that I'll never get to see stock Motoblur ICS. And ICSBlur actually seems to be good, unlike GingerBlur (not to be confused with the custom ROM).
Well.. time for some questioning.. especially after receiving this only a few days ago:
"Dear Ryan,
Thanks for reaching out to Motorola.
I do apologize but we currently do not have any notifications regarding the exact release date of the official Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for the Motorola ATRIX 4G. It is scheduled to roll out as an over the air upgrade this third quarter of 2012. You will receive a notification on your device once the upgrade is already available for download. I'm so sorry for the inconvenience."

Thank You.
Thread Closed.
So after years of enjoying xda anonymously I had to ask: why the sudden secrecy about the ICS leak for the Atrix 4G?
I've been enjoying xda for my Bionic and over 'there' (lol) we don't care. If there is a leak we all go crazy and post howto's and upload it to a dozen fileshare sites, share info and just go buck ass wild.
Over the past couple of days I noticed there was a thread about a leak, then it got deleted, and ever since then it's "That ROM" and everyone is anal about providing info about it. What's the big deal? Really. Someone explain it.
I would love to get an ICS leak for my wife's Atrix 4G. She's having so much trouble with cellular data and Wifi it would be like a new phone to her.
I just went back to stock on my Bionic to wait for a soak test OTA for ICS I was invited for. If it works as well as the leak I've been running for months I'll be happy as a slinky on an escalator (sorry, had to use that one. It's from a US commercial and cracks me up).
So, what's the big deal with the secrecy?
The problem with XDA is perpetual misinformation.
Thread got deleted. People jumped to conclusions, thought it must be Motorola or some other company. Now everyone thinks if they keep it all "hush hush" that they won't realise people are bug testing and developing on the leak lol
The other day people got pissy and suspicious when someone who's been here for years (but only posted recently, sorta like how i started here) because he asked for AT&T APK's and logs (plaintext, anyone could comb through for personal info and remove it before sending).

I SAW THAT .. that was hilarious. I was really close to comment about that in my first post; something like "Don't worry, I promise I'm no undercover spook from Apple" (since they own the Atrix's fingerprint reader company now). Bringing Apple in here would have really stirred up some ****
I guess I'll wait until things die down and get organized. My wife doesn't like me messing with her phone so I need to get it right the first time lol
Initially there was a mis-understanding due to lack of information, people assumed and inferred too much from epinter's thread removal. Whether or not the paranoia is justified, fact remains that epinter wanted his thread removed and that some company wanted the leak hushed in XDA although they did not do it via the right channels.
Now I think it became the defacto standard to call the leak 'that rom', not due to paranoia but because people are familiar with that name. Its quite cool too, adds a story to our beloved phone.
We are all masons. That's why.

Atrix ICS/JB over due!!
Atrix deserves an ICS update!! Love this Phone.
Personally I feel that the community should set an example by creating a stable ICS/JB build for the phone.

You're new here, but don't ever expect anything from the community. They "should"? No, they shouldn't do anything, they don't owe you or me anything. Be happy with what they're already done.

Forgive my sense of humour...
If your wife insisting on ICS then the easiest solution is divorcing her, otherwise your marriage is safe in spite of her Atrix ownership.
A working ICS ROM is not going to happen from any ROM leaks unless Motorola finishs cooking the ROM. The support of ICS ROM by XDA members would be an issue, at least for me.

Cooking????? ROM??????
And why would a Firmware supported by xda developers be a problem for you?

Lol. My wife doesn't care what she runs but she has horrible issues with cellular data stability. I had too with my Bionic before I installed an ICS leak. That's why I'm banking on this leak.
I don't know the state of this leak, but if it is anything like the Bionic leaks it's good enough.

And if you ever feel the community should do something, set up an example and... do it then share with others.
Punit Soni needs to know that there is a lot of people intested in the kernel source of their incomplete work on ICS.
Let's ask him for that https://plus.google.com/111499908439497508351
I think it could help us to get an working ICS =)
Thank you Guys!
We were lucky to get anything other than a standard textbook reply from Motorola. Motorola will never release source as it has a lot of proprietary code and drivers to which they might no longer have rights to. Also, I can't imagine them releasing it only to be told that unpaid enthusiasts were able to do what their employees couldn't.

I don't think Punit Soni is the right guy for that.

But if we get only the GPL sources, we could use the proprietary libraries in the leak. If the proprietary libraries are ok, then we could fix the problems with the leak's kernel (like battery drain, deep sleep).
In fact, looks like they have reasons to not release the GPL sources... But doesn't hurt to ask Punit Soni about it...

He isnt the vice president of moto. He is the vice president of product management. For about a month straight the atrix and photon community asked him over and over to do something to no avail. By all means, try again. But just saying, its been done before.
Well let's just add a layer of anger. I'm pretty bored of this crappy company not giving us what we need.
imho Punit is the guy that's responsible for the cancellation of ICS update. He was talking about bitter decisions before the announcement.
And as an employee of Google, he wont give anything that will give more life to Atrix.
If you want a phone with 4.x, sell your Atrix or work some overtime and buy another phone.

May I ask why are you still following Atrix threads and posting posts like this?! If you have or made decision to buy another phone, just buy it and leave others without your advises.

Thanks for the advice. But couldn't you tell me how to get 300€ to get a Nexus 4 ? I bought my Atrix 6 months ago and I waited something like 6 months to buy it.
I think its worth a try to get a reply of what he thinks of helping us!

make atrix users post comments for need of atrix ics or kernel in his g+:fingers-crossed:
Krystian Plonski posted about engineering atrixes with enabled uart on headset jack. Let's put a "+1" on his request!!

Because I still use the Atrix, obviously. See how it does that nifty trick of saying what its sent with?
I'm not sitting here complaining about ICS for the Atrix. I use CM10 If you want ICS, get another phone. Very simple. Like me, I'm working overtime to buy another phone. But trying to spam a guy isn't going to get ICS on your phone.
And I should point out you are in the wrong place to tell someone they can't advise people abut phones.

This is not first time that you're giving that kind of advice. Someone is not willing to work overtime or just can't. Someone just like Atrix size and features, doesn't need anything better... So many reasons.
Actually you're wrong. I had Desire. HTC announced that will not be GB update. Community was so loud that HTC change its mind. If a lot of people request, Motorola must do something. The worst thing is to do what you did, buy another phone (doesn't matter which vendor) because that's exactly what vendors wish!

Buy Nexus. Problem solved. If you don't, don't expect updates. View them as miracles if they get pushed trough.
