[INFO] Google creates similar app like Siri but much clearer - Nexus S General

Apple's Siri voice control system is as a 'digital personal assistant' designed to allow you to talk to your phone like you talk to other people.
Many Google Android functions already have similar apps built in - although not quite to the specifications of Apple's much-hyped control systems.
Now it seems Google may be about to unveil an official Android rival to Siri - called Majel after Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, the actor who played the voice of the Starship Enterprise in Star Trek.
The name was reported by sources speaking to the Android and Me blog this week.
The name tallies with earlier comments from Google staffers about a 'Star Trek'-like approach.
Google is definitely working on such a system - and this week announced that it had acquired the company Clever Sense, which offers a voice control app.
'I say this year because I’ve heard that engineers at Google X are working around the clock on finishing the first release and the NYTimes previously reported that one product would be released by Google X this year,' wrote Android and Me.
Google X is the search giant's 'blue sky ideas' division - a secretive lab where engineers are free to go wild with ideas such as talking fridges and lifts that take you to space.
'A January or February release might be more realistic,' said Android and Me. 'Other more advanced features like controlling phone actions and applications with natural language commands are expected to come later.'
In earlier interviews, Google acknowledged that it was indeed working on such as product - and that it would be rather like the voice of the Starship Enterprise.
'Our approach is more like Star Trek, the Starship Enterprise - everything is voice-aware,' said Google's Matias Duarte.

Looks like a good idea, and I can't wait to reboot my phone and hear, Last time on your nexus S!

Hope there will be a French support version ...

OMG! my dream has come true

Im glad they are doing away with the quirks and making it more serious, I don't really like the idea of my phone making jokes when I ask it to do something for me

This doesn't seem to be that big of a deal. I have never found a use, really, for Voice Recognition on my phone.

Well, apple just applied for a patent on, well basically multitasking. Something their phone doesn't even really do.
I wonder how long it will take for them to blow all their cash suing other companies.
The sooner the better IMO.
I hope Google gets majel to do the voice for this app. Then fire a couple quantum photon torpedoes at Apple and make them have no patents and have to pay licenses to every single tech company in the world.

You hate Apple for this?? this is ridiculous,
If you must hate something, hate the patent office who granted the patents.
Hate the judge who indeed confirmed this was a violation of license.
Apple indeed patented this, and used it in their software (check the mail program in macos for example, it will parse automatically date, locations etc and create events for you, it is sweet and very well done.). Microsoft did not copy this, because it is PATENTED, HTC decided to simply use the patent without permission, who are they that they can steal other's technology while other vendors won't?
HTC violated it. Apple has to protect their assets, what's the point of patents then?
See, same thing with the great instant DHCP stuff in macos, microsoft + linux don't have that. Linux is thinking about doing something similar to improve their product, but they are intelligent enough to simply not steal macos code.
Be mad at the judge, be mad at HTC that they didn't have the R&D to come up with their own so now they'll go down, be mad at the whole Patents/copyright stuff and sure, be mad at Apple for developing the technology and protecting it.
This is ridiculous.

You're right, there's plenty of blame to go around.
That doesn't change the fact that instead of trying to develop, instead of trying to be innovatitve, to keep in the market...they are sinking their claws into any company that they can.
They literally probably had their programmers going through code to try to find patents that might possibly have been violated to sue, instead of having them ya know...program.
It's sick. It has to be stopped.

It might be sick, but this is the nature of the business, it has been this way for years, and every company is expected to defend their own patents/copyrights.
This is the reason you would see other companies buying out smaller companies, sometimes just for a few patents, or get rid of the competition.
In this case, i don't know what Apple and HTC exchanges were, but normally it would go something like:
Hey HTC, you are violating our patent X and Y, please remove this from your product.
HTC says, sorry no can't do.
Apple says, fine, we'll see you in court and have the judge decide.
Judge says, yup. HTC, pay up, or remove that crap out of your product.
This is normal, this is what happens in pretty much any business.
I do like HTC and their products, and not a particular fan of apple, but this is simply Business As Usual. Choose to hate apple for other reasons please.

Who knows. Corporate lawsuits are always on going and will always be something excepted. Most of the time they are used as a way of stopping your competitors or at least trying to compete against you. Really not very legitimate. Apple is a prime example. They steal from others, like Microsoft has done for many yrs and start legal action. I can't make this stuff up, research it.

havent tried it yet, but from screenshots I guess I can see why people would say that. So were going from xbox looking to winmo7 looking? I guess its a slight improvement... aside from aesthetics, does it navigate better? The thing I like about android is that it will probably change way before winmo does, just like TW will move on from its similarities to iOS way before iOS does... so who cares? As far as lawsuits, it does appear to just be corporate tactics, even if just to get a headline on engadget for a day, free advertising. I love apples one of wanting to see what samsung has coming in the future... looks like apple is developing something new, and this is how they do it!

This, not settled yet (patent purchases from nortel still need reviewed by trade commission and fcc), and...
Firstly, love the new market.
Second, good freaking luck if microsoft tried that. Remember, this just the market's new interface. The "look and feel" you're refering to is windows phone 7's entire homescreen UI. Apples to oranges
On a side note; this is exactly why I think that a lot of apple's suit against samsung I going to go down in flames. They're trying to compare iOS's homescreen UI to touchwiz's app drawer. This would make te other half of the suit, that the external hardware appearance of the device's look similar, also somewhat shaky. I have a hard time believing that a judge will buy the arguement that people are choosing one device over another because of the external aesthetics alone (if you go with my first theory that the UI part will be thrown out), considering there have certainly been other devices with a middle select button that were never taken to court.

Apple thinks that they invented electronic devices. They have some pretty wild claims. Glad they don't make cars.....could you imagine that mess? They'd be claiming they invented the wheel, anything with 4 wheels is just copying them. They'd be trying to trademark items like "Sports Car", or "Coupe", and "Windshield Wiper".
They need to be slapped down with common sense approaches in the legal system.

Good post, this is actually pretty spot on in my opinion. All these apple lawsuits accomplish 2 objectives for Apple as far as I can see.
1) Gets Apples name out in the tech blogs/sites regularly and gets the publicity.
2) Makes software and hardware manufacturers spend more time dealing with public/court/etc. After all, time is money.

As Apple said, its about the "Ecosystem" they don't have to be right...they just have to point fingers....
It kinda works like this, if you keep claiming a person is a "murderer" and spread the word around, people somewhere deep down will partly believe it. Negative news travels faster then positive news. So the general public will gain the impression that everyone is "Stealing" or "Copying" Apple regardless of whether its true or not...

Which phone is this? But I think the problem is that most likely Samsung didn't actually patent the design of their phone. Thats what Apple does. They patent everything in the broken patent system, especially generic non-tangible things like the rough layout of their UI. They even go as far as to trademark the "highway 280" logo for their IOS maps app. Then they go off and sue everyone that relatively may somewhat be sorta kinda similar to them. All this instead of simply making a new and more innovative product. Hey if you can't beat em, litigate em.

Well I will probably get flack for this, but here goes. Before you get all happy about this aquisition by Google. Remember who Motorola has been in bed with for the better part of their phone "Greatness" , Verizon . The original we're going to throttle your data, you better not be tethering (even though your paying for unlimited) , if we can't charge you for it you can't do it, we're going to control everything you do on your phone carrier. So even though it's Google new company, the employees are still the old regime. With the old habits, especially the Executives. I'll always remember a quote from one of Verizon's press releases stating " the Companies bottom line is always the most important aspect in considerations involving customers" . I understand this true for any company. But to say it in a press release like that says a lot about how they perceive their customer base. Yes, I understand this is only my opinon
No flack here, you make avalid point

i live in seattle and googles from redmond, theyve been on the news about this quite a bit and theyve even said themselves they just wanted the patent portfolio to help in defending android and the developers against apple, microsoft and the rest of the other bull**** patent trolls.
I see where this will certainly help Google, and Motorola, with regards to patent lawsuits. But how will this help Samsung, and HTC? Is Google going to step in, and say "Get out of here, patent troll....check this out....PWNT!!!"

I'd imagine that since these patents are typically incredibly vague such as "scrolling menus" that if Apple sues HTC or Samsung over infringing on one of their vaguely worded patents then Google could jump in and brandish one of their equally vague patents and say that Google actually has the patent for it, not Apple.

Edit: In regards to the post above there is no real reason to buy HTC
1)they are doing great on there own
2) HTC would not give up sense and google would not want sense
3) HTC would be like 3X the amount that Motorola was
4)Motorola already had made the commitment to android and that was its sole operating system unlike HTC where they make phones for WP7 and Android.
4) Motorolas patent portfolio is much bigger
5) Motorolas not getting sued lol
Just my 2 cents theres probably other reasons too
Google did it for the Patents
I heard its to help cover their a$$ with apple lawsuits

ICS launch postponed cause Jobs died.. wtf?

it appears that Samsung and Google have decided not to launch the Galaxy Nexus (or Nexus Prime, or whatever it's called) and Ice Cream Sandwich at their October 11th Unpacked event. The two companies sent out a joint announcement reading:
Samsung and Google decide to postpone the new product announcement at CTIA Fall. We agree that it is just not the right time to announce a new product. New date and venue will be shortly announced.
The press event on the 11th was expected to be not only the debut for the successor to the Nexus S, but our first good look at the next version of Android. For whatever reason the companies have decided to delay that launch. But, if Eric Schmidt is true to his word, we shouldn't have to wait too much longer... he did promise us that it would launch by November. We'll let you know as soon as we get a new date to expect "something big."
Update: A Samsung spokesperson issued a follow up statement to CNET, confirming speculation that the reveal was postponed out of respect, following the passing of Steve Jobs. "We believe this is not the right time to announce a new product as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs's passing," the spokesperson explained.

You, sir, will single-handedly lead Apple into the new era.

you can be sarcastic all you want, but the truth is, other people respected steve, but steve respected noone publicly.
i can almost guarantee that he would not have put off a keynote due to someone else's death.
the man, while brilliant and revolutionary, was a ****
If you read.....they are only delaying the announcement not the release date. The delay of the announcement days after Steves passing is respectable and I actually like google/samsung more for doing so. Without the launch of the phone I think smartphones wouldn't be where they are today due to competitiveness.
It's basically just good public relations.
You don't want to make a major product announcement in an environment where it is not the biggest story of the day. The tech press and the mainstream media are still focused on Jobs and Apple.

All I'm gonna say is for those that want to know "more" about Steve Jobs (and Gates for that matter), watch "Pirates of Silicon Valley".
You can find it in YouTube for free to watch.
IMO that is a 4 star movie (lots of drama too in there), and definitely worth watching!...

no, ICS is the next Android update that Google is making. it's going to merge Honeycomb and Gingerbread into one OS, and then it will be released to companies like Moto and Samsung. then we will see an ICS update in the future, with blur or touchwiz incorporated into the system.
it's just the next major update to Android ICS = Ice Cream Sandwich.

[Q] Any chance Apple may go after the Nexus 7?

Now that Apple has got an injunction to stop the sale of the Galaxy Nexus, do you guys think they may go after the Nexus 7? Or is it more of an issue with Samsung?
You can never tell who Apple might go after next, but i think google would've covered themselves from all angles. It ****ty even thinking about it, patent wars are killing the tech industry and innovation.

Now that Jobs is gone the world could do without Apple
The Apple business model has replaced innovation with litigation, so they might sue anyone for anything.
I especially like the cartoon showing that, from the right angle, an IPad looks a lot like a refrigerator. Based on that, they got an injunction against selling refrigerators.

Yes they will. Both legally (cause they're apple) and with a 7in iPad.

Annoying thing is, google arent that type of company and dont actually copyright loads of their stuff anyway. Apple will make a tablet after google then claim google copied them and sue google. Because thats how they understand things...
I think no

Well, Tim Cook isn't Steve Jobs. Rumors have been swirling that prototypes were being produced, success of the Nook, Kindle, and Nexus will pressure Apple to make a competitor.

He also said that no one would want to watch videos on an ipod.
It's up in the air. Especially if the GN lawsuit succeeds, there's no reason they wouldn't use the same patents to get rid of the Nexus 7. If it seems like an open-and-shut case, Apple has more incentive to pull the trigger.
Reasons they might not: I haven't seen Apple suing Asus yet, either because of lack of popularity or because Asus has a large enough defense portfolio. If the former, it could quickly happen. I don't personally have much confidence in the latter.
I just hope I receive my N7 before Apple stops them. I'm sure they will try.

What a shame. All the money in the world and all the legal shenanigans can't bring Steve Jobs back from the dead.
The vindictive SOB can't go "thermonuclear on Android" - his words, not mine.

One of them was "Slide to Unlock". You know, the thing we have been doing with deadbolts for 200 years.

They'll probably go after google trying to say the new Google Search is too much like Siri. Even tho we all know it's nothing like Siri or IOS.
