Hey guys,
Recently there's been talks about piracy on Android and how developers seem to shy away from it and produce games for iOS. That's actually the reason why developers of Infinite Blade refuses to port the game to Android. I've recently gotten the chance to speak with the creative director Matt Small of Vector Unit (Riptide GP). In this interview he talks about piracy and how its equal on both sides of the os. You guys really think its that bad? In truth when GTA 3 came out today someone already posted the apk on this forums mere hours it showed up in the market.
Anyway check it out:

IOS apps are easily pirated as well.. I just don't see how that is a legitimate reason to turn down some extra profits by porting it to Android.
Piracy runs rampant on any OS, mobile or not. The Infinity Blade developers might use that as an excuse for some secret underlying hatred for Android

lol infinity blade? sorry didn't hear you I was too busy playing blood and glory because GLU aren't picky developers.
I've may have downloaded a few apps with my *special* discount, I try to help developers out when I can. Especially if they're small and offering a good app, I'd feel too guilty otherwise. But if I'm short on cash one week and you have an app like adobe kuler going for 10 dollars...
I mean c'mon its 10 dollars for an app that selects colors. I guess if you have an indecisive wife who can't make her mind up about which blouse to wear it pays off eventually... but for the rest of us it's robbery.
Also it's always nice to try an app or game before you buy it, some don't always offer lite versions. If I bought each of the media players I went through before finding dice player, I'd have to take out a couple of mortgages.
The only time I may have downloaded an apk was for gameloft. Of course I purchased the game, but their lack of support for android is astounding. It's like they don't want it to be sold. For example, many of their games can easily run by on our Transformer, but instead they make it only available to the xoom or galaxy tab, and no they don't have any exclusive deals with those companies.
Glu is a different story. I appreciate their work in putting high quality games out but the pay to play feature is getting old quick. I'd rather pay 10 bucks for infinity blade than pay a buck here and there and end up spending more than its worth without noticing.
From things my fiancee has told me about people and their iPods, if piracy was a big concern, I would not touch iOS with a twenty thousand dollar anti-piracy framework let along develop for it lol. Can't say that I hear much about it on Android, although I'm sure there is just as much.
In Android, IMHO there is a fair model available and going much past the what was intended, means either you are doing it wrong or you're stupid. People can make piracy (and cheating) harder than the average people. But then you're just going to have the really smart ones pull it off, and probably make more in the long run than the worthless game. The best you can do is lose users, money, and time, by putting to much into anti-piracy efforts, versus making a better and more affordable game. 1 x $6 game that gets pirated more than it sold, versus 4 x $1 games that probably gets pirated as often as it's sold is still a gain.
If it does more than play video and accept input, you can't make a pirate (or cheat) proof game. No way mathematically in my honest opinion.

Epic Games have a deal with Apple to keep the game exclusive to iOS. Whatever they give as a reason not to go to Android is PR bull****.
To any Devs think about piracy on Android chew on this, Android market just hit 10 billion downloads, 25% of those were game downloads. Pardon my math but that's a **** LOAD of downloads. You'd think Epic Games weren't EPIC STUPID enough to port their game to Android.

Still aside from Epic. A number of iOS cite android as piracy magnet. I can't wait till we shed this as the OS matures which I believe (aside from small hickups) is already at apples doorstep. I'm willing to bet the next major upgrade we receive will not only catch up to iOS but surpass it.

Pirates! Scurvy dogs.
Is there a pirated app that will make my transformer work like an ipad? Bleh!

That is a red herring. It's about the equivalent of saying you won't develop for Xbox 360 because of Piracy and you will stick with developing for PS3. Total and utter bull****.

The problem with android is, how easy it is to download and install pirated apps..
On iOS you have to jailbreak first, when you use Android you check off a little box and voila - instant access to all the apps that you can find using, ironically, Google..
Let's say for instance you had to root an Android phone, and not using click-to-root methods, but actually "working" a bit for it..
How many of the people who now just share apps, would consider it too much of a hassle/risk ? (chance of bricking, and all that )

Well, that's what conventional wisdom would tell you. And yet the numbers of piracy are the same on both sides of the fence.

Meh. Piracy on Android is more hassle than it's worth. I can understand it for $100 PC games, where the pirates can actually deliver a superior product to the retail outlet (DRM infestations, etc), but for $1-5 apps on the Android/iOS market? Nah.

Once jailbroken though, you can install an app-store like app that downloads every app for free... Making the effort to jailbreak, and then install this app makes using pirated apps even easier than searching and downloading an apk for Android.
There's no doubt piracy is a factor on every OS... and someone is going to make it easy for an average user..... Although, Android does tend to have more technically inclined users than IOS.
Piracy on Android? There will always be piracy regardless of whatever platform its on.
Xbox 360: People mod their consoles to play pirated games.
PS3: Same thing
PC: same thing with piracy
iOS devices: Jailbreak and install unauthorized apps/games from third-party "app stores"
Android: this will be the same thing. It's nothing new...
If anything, its the way the game developers market their game. For example,
Let's take a look at Gameloft taking advantage of "device availability." Devices such as the Transformer can play the game... but somehow Galaxy Tab 10.1 can't!? so this forces the customer to find a apk for it and download the apk and finds out that its working!
Small little things like that irritate the customers. Kinda the same thing with GTA III and its device launch. But they actually have a legitimate reason because it doesn't run on the device.
I think the guy who download a pirated apk has no money to buy the real app, or has no the way to buy it, even, having the money and the willing to buy the app.
Here, in Argentina, there is no other way to buy an Android app on Market if you don't have an international credit card. A lot of people gets the money in cash, no banks involved, so, to get the credit card you need to work in a corporation o have a very good job (I'm talking about Argentina).
-
Ep2008 is right, 15 minutes is not enough for test some apps, even, some apps has misleading descriptions. Sometimes the app does not works well on your device (in iOS you can buy it and you know that it will works well).
Buy an app is a risk if the developer is "jhon Doe" (or Gameloft...) but, if you are buying from, for example, Rockstar, you know that you are buying something that worth you money.
Developers who complains about Android are the ones who don't have a good reputation.
As a small developer:
1) I mostly make ad supported games right now (Google allows selling only from 20 countries, mine not included) so I'm happy if someone copies it of course.
2) If someone blocks ads I don't much care as long as he is happy and recommends my games to others,
3) From what I read from other (small) developers piracy is not that high of an issue (some of them were counting the pirated copies and it was like 1% or sth like that).
For larger companies and more pricier games the percentage is probably much higher, I don't know. But mostly those who pirate a game wouldn't buy it anyway. And they can recommend it to those who buy.
Personally I also prefer ad supported but free games (like Aporkalypse, great fun, ads not problematic) - but some people hate them, I know.

I know that for whatever reason a lot of Android users do not buy many apps. For me this is due to the still paltry internal storage (We need to start a petition or something to set a minimum for internal storage in Android phones btw) and an overall lack of desire for many apps. I have however paid for well made apps, because I want more well made apps to populate the Android market. At this time a lot of devs who develop great apps for BB and iPhone are wary about wasting time developing for Android because a majority of Android users do not spend money on apps. For example: Beejive and their messaging program is still waiting for Android to "Take off" so to speak.
So my message to Android users far and wide...buy more apps...and we get better apps...
also...GOOGLE SET SOME STANDARDS FOR ANDROID PHONES...internal storage is a definite necessity + micro SD cards...
Not sure the main problem is the storage capacity. I think some countries still don't have access to paid apps, and even in countries where you can buy apps, some of us won't be able to do it untill android market starts accepting other paiment methods, or Google Checkout starts working with more credit cards / check / paypal.
As of now, I have a paypal account and a credit card, but I just can't use google checkout.
It's crisis man
You don't need to buy apps to drive the market.
Buy Android devices, tell your friends to buy Android devices then use apps and provide feedback. Even if they're free apps.
If Google would've made paid apps available in more than a handful countries you would see that the market would skyrocket.
IF there were apps and games worthy of paying money for, I would. There is simply nothing good enough to pay for IMO right now, so I guess it's a catch 22. (ok, actually I did buy the meltus louder app for my G1 but it of course wont work on the nexus, so.....). But yeah, developers have to show me more of an iPhone quality app before I buy anything.
RIM and Apple's marketshare is huge for phones, hence customers, and therefore paying customers for developers. Coupled with the fact that Android is still developing (push, fragmentation of hardware, new versions every 4 months) of course Android isn't "attractive". It will happen though. I feel that the 1.5 and 1.6-era apps were garbage generally, and now we're starting to see serious apps coming out. Unfortunately, since most Android phones in customers' hands are still not snapdragon-based, anything written for powerful hardware is limiting its audience right out of the gate.
I love the general Free and Pro version approach. If I find that I like or use the free for more than a day, I will usually buy the pro. If I pay for it, I use the next 24 hours to make an informed decision.
The developers are suffering from circular logic. Make decent paid apps and people will buy them. All you have to do is watch any tech news feed to see the growth the Android platform is attaining. I cannot buy something that isn't there. It only makes sense.
I agree the market is flooded with crap apps as well. There has to be a compromise to allow for the user to find the better applications. Even being able to sort by ratings or filter low-rated apps out of a search would be a huge step. Let's hope it gets better.

Same here , got a paypal account , but it's useless @ android market .. and cant use google checkout , because my country is not listed ...
A good idea would be , using a normal website based checkout system . like the people @ http://www.dataviz.com/ did ... I bought from them Documents to go ( easy , fast payment )..
There are many apps I would like to buy , but can't pay for them as they ONLY have the google checkout payment option ...
To tell you the truth, most of the good apps out there are free. Most apps are what, 2 dollars a pop? I don't think I've ever second guessed buying an app, especially with the return-24hours policy.
The real problem is that the android user population is still growing, and sort of still in its infancy. This is definitely changing though, as more and more of the people around me have switched from other OS's to Android.
I suspect we're talking about a problem that doesn't actually exist.
Sure, if you're expecting to make a living off your market app at the moment you'd be one of the lucky few.
Android is just coming out of its infancy and starting to bloom, 4% smart phone penetration (measured by internet usage*) this time 2009, 24% in 2010... fastest growing mobile platform in the world.
Android handsets are going to experience explosive growth in 2010, and with that a significant slice of the premium handset market.
Patience is all we need, and a better Market.

There ya go
And because you have a statistic measuring something completely different from my one I should change my position?
You're trolling, go away.
Edit: Nevertheless your stats actually prove the point I was making ...Mod Edit, keep it clean please
I am not a developer, but I was reading up on experiences that developers have with the Android Market.
Then I also came across a website that showed some statistics about paid apps and they were shocking. I can't remember the source right now, but it said that the Apple AppStore is a $200 million business per month, where the Android Market is only $5 millions per month. This is very discouraging for developers who are in it for money (usually companies who have the resources to create Games and more Complex Apps and have the ability to Partner with Services).
One developers said that he only got 23 downloads, in the first month. He mentioned then that over half of them used the 24 hour refund (could that be that those were leachers who downloaded the app and threw it on a P2P channel?), eventually he ended up with 11 sales. One guy sent him an email and said that $4.99 is too much to ask for, which I think is not unreasonable considering that there are many apps in the Apple AppStore that cost much more than that. Whether or not his app is useful or not to most users is sadly unknown by me. But looking at his perspective I think I would start developing apps for the iOS, who wouldn't that wants to make money?
The problem with these figures is that developers will eventually stop developing paid apps and the quality of the Android Market (from now on referred to Market) apps vs Apple AppStore (from now on referred to AppStore) apps will extremely decline. And there will be either many low rating apps in the Market or there will be an increase in the amount of Apps submitted the the Market.
We all want good Apps, Apple found out Apps are the number 1 reason a Plattform has success. Android has Google behind it which makes up for a good amount of Great apps and there are very good developers here that are not in it for the money, but eventually it all comes down to making money when it comes to professional businesses offering a product. Look at the games that are offered on the iOS platform vs Android, you can't tell me that an iPhone 3G or a 2nd Gen iPod has better graphics performance than some of the higher-end Android devices.
Also, are there too many free alternatives in the Android Market that the AppStore doesn't have? There are also many free apps in the AppStore.
What can be done about this? - Please post your ideas, since I am not a developer I am not the pro here when it comes to this issue I am asking for your opinion.
However, I am a business student so I have some insights of how companies will react to this as mentioned above.
The few ideas I have would be:
1. Google could increase the quality of design of the API and give different APIs to paid vs free Apps.
2. Sadly I have to mention it because of all the Leachers and then P2P distributors, remove the 24 hour refund policy.
3. Google to hire more developers in house who are paid and create free apps that can compete with the AppStore (which would cost Google a fortune). Maybe then charge a small amount for Google Voice to do some financial damage report.
4. Change the Markets way how people pay for apps? I noticed that in the past on my iPhone the decision to actually PAY for an app was much easier and faster for me, I didn't even bother to look for a free alternative.
5. Try to Market Android more towards people who are less geeks (who know where and how to find a free solution to the app they need), as in change the look of Android and make it much more simple for the average Joe day to day user (which I would hate because that means remove or hide many of the great features that make Android what I like so much about it and go back to a more primitive system like the iOS4). And tell hardware manufacturers to create more shiny phones.
--> Since most people who don't know how to get free alternatives, or who don't know and don't have the time to learn how to find free alternatives are people that are buying a product for the lifestyle and to show off (iPhone).
What are YOUR ideas to fix this issue? - Thank you for everyone posting solutions.
I don't think this is something we should worry about.
First, Android is open-source and many enthusiasts give their applications free of charge, which is not the case with Apple's closed OS. That is why about 65% of all apps in Market are free, and only 35% paid. In Appstore, about 70% are paid, only 30% free. Statistics: http://androidheadlines.com/2010/09/app-store-vs-android-market-how-much-is-paid-for.html.
Secondly, you'll find that Market currently supports purchases in only 13 markets while the App Store does so in 90. These numbers will change as time passes by and more markets will be included, but I'm sure that Android will always be a platform with much more free apps than iOS, and that's the beauty of Android.
As far as I'm aware the developers have a say regarding that 24 hour refund policy. An application can be made to be non-refundable if they choose to.
In comparing developers for iOS and Android, you have to also look at who they are individually. Sure, there are many apps developed across the board for all mobile devices, but I think the core of the Android Market are individuals who develop apps just for the sake of developing apps. They enjoy what they do and they would do it regardless of profit.
Of course you have a few that try to make money, but I believe they are the exception rather than the rule.
I mean no offense when I say this, but I believe that the iPhone attracts a very different type of user than Android does. Most people I personally know that use the iPhone do so more out of status and pretentiousness than its own usefulness. Many do not even know the majority of things they could do with the iPhone. Those I know who use Android use it because they root it and do their own modifications, overclocking, etc.
With this in mind, I believe that Android apps are generally created by a different kind of developer for a different kind of user.

We have absolutely no say in whether or not out apps are refunded. If I showed you the numbers of instant refunds you'd puke. And the OP states $200 million to $5 million which is ridiculously off. I believe Google just reported that they passed $1 billion in sales (profit) from the Android Market. Either way, it's way more than $5 million a month.
All that said I personally am happy with what I have been able to do with the Market. I expected a little better on my most recent app but it takes time for people to get word of a new app. That's pretty much the problem I've found. It's hard to get noticed. But I still think it's pretty good. There is a lot I absolutely hate about the Market and a bunch of things I like about it. I'd still rather develop for Android and ironically, none of the apps I have created would even work on iPhone. Two are root apps and one requires a modification of the browser which is not allowed on iPhone (for no apparent good reason, I might add).
I am glad to hear that this isn't as big of an issue as I read online, it would be sad to see a great plattform to be hurten, as you can see with the WebOS.
As for not getting recognized, a few tips I have about that is not to rely too much on people finding your app in the market, but rather advertise it yourself, use your facebook and twitter and even this forum (if the forum policy allow that, I am not sure on that again since I am not a developer). I love the QR codes, I actually see many of them in bathroom stalls and other places, and I always check on them since it's in my curiosity to find out where they get me.
I'm making an extra living off paid apps on the Marketplace.
Oh, and an extra living off free apps with Admob.
So now I'm making 3 livings worth. It's wonderful. I have no complaints.

You're forgetting about Droid users. You'd be surprised how many people own an Android just for status and pretentiousness. It goes both ways. I even know a few people with Androids that don't even know that they have an Android.

Pirates do buy software sometimes, how do you think it gets to P2P networks in the first place? One of them buys it, his friend cracks it and everyone else gets it 4free.
So it wouldn't solve anything, removing the refund would only make legit customers angry if the app doesn't work.

I thought google did hire developers and they do create free apps. I don't think competing with appstore is their ultimate goal though, since appstore and iphoneos are completely closed.
Charging for services is something I agree with completely.
They should indeed make certain (not all) services cost money. But they should also keep the software free and open to ensure the quality.
4. Change the Markets way how people pay for apps? I noticed that in the past on my iPhone the decision to actually PAY for an app was much easier and faster for me, I didn't even bother to look for a free alternative.

It was much easier and faster because apple paid someone to make it easier and faster.
I'm not so sure google is willing to invest money into closed source software, especially when you consider these 3 facts.
1. Closed source software has a limited amount of developers who are working to make it better, faster and more efficient.
2. More developers on a single project means more features, more bugfixes and faster development.
3. Opensource software in general is more secure because everyone can see the source code.
As I don't like being labeled, I think marketing should be focused on pushing Android for everyone, not just specific groups of people.
User knows what works best for him so let him decide what to buy. Wide selection of devices that share the base operating system is great, but user should decide what type of software he wants to use, not google nor apple.
User should also decide what type of service he wants to use and whether that service is free or paid.
Changing the look of Android to make it more simple is something I'd personally hate, but we should always have options.
It would be great to flash an extremely simple android OS for my grandmother's phone for example, while keeping my VNC and SSH on my own device.
Also, don't think there's much difference between android users and iphone users, they're just people anyway. And there's an equal amount of pirated iphone apps and android apps.
Only real difference is about the OS, where one offers you a choice and another forces you to pay and develops restrictions instead of new features.

Hey Xoomers!! We all know this, but its worth repeating...some developers are now showing interest in Android/honeycomb tablets...but in order to keep that support, and to get Ipad quality games and developers on board, we must SUPPORT these developers by actually buying their games and apps and stop the bootlegging!! I know it can be tempting, but why would developers want to Support Android if we are not paying..they would just continue to support Apple..and we will be left with powerful devices with no great games or apps to show for it...Lets show Apple that Android is the new king of the block!!!

But still I dont mind spending the $6.00 bucks, i might like it later But the more support we actually show, the more developers will jump on board, and create better looking games for Tegra. I would love to play resident evil Zombies, need for Speed hot pursuit on our amazing Xoom devices, but its up to us to show that its worth making games for Android. So if we can spend $5.00 on things we don't need, surely we can spend the money to help benefit us as Xoom owners in the long run!!

I've always paid for my apps. Any lack of developer interest because of bootlegging isn't in any way because of me. Its worth noting that even having to post this speaks volumes of the mindset of "general android users" and gives ios devs that much more fuel.

i disagree with your statement..regardless if i posted this or not, developers have already mentioned the fact that bootlegging is a problem with Android owners in general. We have to show developers that we are serious about supporting them. So it's good to show that we are committed to buying apps/games, and that developers will be rewarded for taking the time to develop for us. if we acknowledge the problem and speak about about it, hopefully that will get people on board if they want the better-quality games for Android!
Apple has alot of bootlegging. its just as easy to get a paid app for free on ios devices, as it is on android. I think apple devices have more apps because their is more people to use the product. And devs only have to make it for th Device iPhone Ipad ect. But with anroid you have a little harder time because everything has the android os on it samsung HTC motorola ect.
Ask an ios developer who also produces a like android app which generates more revenue and which gets stolen more.
This is the same argument software developers have had literally for decades. I used to be a producer at a major gaming company and we always claimed that pirating cost us millions of dollars a year. The fact is that it is completely unprovable that there is any loss of revenue at all. If you make an absolutely awesome state-of-the-art game with absolutely unbreakable copy protection you will sell x number of units. If you sell the same game with no copy protection you will still sell x number of units but a bunch of people who didn't pay for it will get it as well because its easy to copy. So regardless, you still make the same amount of money, but you spent a lot more on the DRM licenses so you actually made less profit in the end.
With Android, the number of people who root their device and install pirated apk's is a hugely insignificant number to the overall Android user base, most estimates put it so low that it isnt even trackable. If you choose to not develop for a platform because of pirating, you are throwing money away.
I second the notion of supporting devs, but priacy isn't the primary problem. The biggest problem is market share and time on market. As both of those increase, they will no longer be an issue. This said, it wouldn't hurt to try and cut down priacy and maybe for a free app with a donation option somewhere, use it if its a good app. (Not always obviously, but sometimes is a great start.)
Sent from my Xoom the way it should be, rooted and with SD card.
Appealing to people's better nature is about the same as asking for donations. You aren't gonna get too far.
I think the best anti-piracy approach isn't DRM, but to convert it to a service. You can't pirate a MMOG. Not all software can be tailored to this, but most can, especially in this age of 24x7 connectivity. Software is heading in this direction already, with SaS and of course Da Klowd.
The tough cookie is how to extend the SaS model to media, viz movies and music, given their fundamentally "offline" nature of consumption.
Perhaps the way forward for the movie/music industry is to wrap them in software, eg make them interactive. Say, a piece of music can be played at varying tempo of your choosing, or it can be auto-remixed using templates, or it can be sweetened depending on your mood, etc.
Interactive movie is a tougher row to hoe, since movie watching is mainly a linear experience. But once animation gets to the point of achieving photo-realism, then a movie can conceivably be constructed like a game.
A major weakness of games thus far is lack of pathos. It's hard to be scared, or feel sad or joy, when playing a computer game, as opposed to watching a good movie. Perhaps a movie-game hybrid, with real human actors in intermixed sequences, will achieve this.
I disagree with you. The post by the OP is something like "encouragement" to give MORE SUPPORT to Android developer.
1. To talk more about Android apps to friends and family
2. To contact particular apps developer to create Honeycomb version of their Android apps
3. To contact iOS developers to port their product to Android Honeycomb
4. To create great detailed reviews of Android Honeycomb apps / games and spread the word

Agree ...
The thing is for people who do not want to buy, they will not buy anyway.
This kind of thing is mentality. No matter what, they will always find away to pirate.
What I always do here at my work is to promote and specifically tell all my friends about Android apps and why they should not pirate them (some of them do pirating).
Come on, the price is not expensive! Really not expensive! I cannot believe people risking their phone by installing illegal version for something worth like $1 or $2.
However, I would love to have options to PERMANENTLY REMOVE / DELETE certain apps from my Google Checkout account!
Yes, not all apps are good ... Sometimes, I regret that I bought "that" app. And now, it is listed in my Google Checkout account
I could do some kind of "donation" by buying "any" good apps or ported apps from iOS, once a month for example I will do this to give support to Android devs. But yeah, I don't do this now because I hate to have long list in my Android Market purchased apps list.

Thank you guys for understanding my post. I think Android wants Honeycomb to be more *centralized* like Apple..meaning that developers won't have to worry about making different versions of apps n games since most tabs running honeycomb will have the same base specs. We need let devs know that we are serious about supporting them...The Android family will or has already outgrown Apples fan base..so developers can make money from us but they need to know that most of us will buy their products. You never know who's reading these forums.
I have no idea whether there is a lot or a little piracy on android phones. Unfortunately there will always be a segment of any group willing to justify stealing products or information. Some groups worse than others. My guess that at least on this forum people understand what goes into making an app and respect that. Now being in the video game industry I can attest to piracy especially on the pc. It gets to the point where its almost pointless to produce a variant of a console game on pc. If the drm is too restrictive you get blasted all over th internet. If you don't put a really restrictive drm on them every pc owner wil have bit torrented your game. Very frustrating.
In any case, that does not seem to be the case with android. I think the best formula is to provide a free version to test with limited functionality and sell a full version so the people who want all of the features can get them and support the app devs. Such as docs to go. So long as the programs stay relatively cheaper there not be much incentive pirate.

In that most here have bought a $600-800 gadget, we can say that the demog for this forum have higher disposable income than the norm. Another thing we can say is that some number here are content producers or business owners, so there is more empathy for app devs. In short, those here aren't mainstream people.
I don't think the economics of software pricing will suddenly be lowered to the <$10 variety (as dominated by current phone apps) for the simple reason that software devs haven't decided to work for less money. IOW, TCO will be the same, because cost of production is still the same. The different thing is that the distribution channel now is more democratized, and there'll be more software as services than as packaged e-goods.
The issues of piracy are well-known; no need to rehash them here. Suffice it to say that it will be the same for tabs as it is for PCs.
Part of the problem with our Open Ecosystem is the crowd that it has attracted.
These people who love and kill for 'Open' have had access and use of FOSS(Free Open Source Software) for years - everything just about has been about FOSS.
It's difficult to retrain the mindset of these guys to pay for any software. I am not saying anyone is stealing, I am saying they don't see the current sets of software worthy of $0.99 - the cost is not the factor here, the mind set of FOSS is.
That being said the 'Free' in 'Free Open Source Software' does not mean free from $$$ - it just usually happens to be that way with most software used on an open Linux platform.
That being said, I have purchased every app that I have tried, liked, and a pay version has been available for - there are 10 or so that I don't even have installed any more because I just don't use them (programs designed for 1.5, 1.6, or 2.1 - that don't need to be used any more because features exist).
I get the 'Support Future Development' theory, and would gather to say that most of who do Pirate software really don't understand how a development cycle works, or how you make it profitable. I'd almost bet that 40% of the windows copies that hit this web page a day aren't legit. I'd also say that number is safe and low.
If you want a Free OS - take a bit of time and learn linux (Mint is as easy and Windows) - don't steal from that mean multi billion dollar corporation. Theft causes prices to rise, denying them the sale causes prices to fall and force them to become competitive.
On a side note...
Amazon seems to be actively pushing the Android market with their "Free paid app a day" promotion. My question is now, do the developers still get the money for each download or are they the ones to say "hey, promote my app by making it free for 24 hours"?
I think the Android market will always be the step child but on the other hand it is filled with enthusiasts and real people that are approachable. It's more like a team (see this forum). I am very proud to be a member of this community and I am very tempted to switch to an Android phone when I next have the option for a new phone. I currently have a jailbroken iPhone 3GS and probably paid more on Cydia than on iTunes Also, I have paid for way more apps on the Xoom (and way more money was spent) than all my iPhone apps together!

Yes, they do get a % of the price of the App, I think they receive 20% when the app is listed for the free app of the day - There are some other stipulations to that though. They get 70%? I believe when the app is purchased normally and Amazon keeps 30% finders fee so to speak, covers CC Processing and Amazon over head.
I would gladly buy the apps if i only could. Like someone already posted, apps are not exactly expensive when you consider the price we have paid for our Xooms.
Only problem is that for some reason Google doesn't offer paid apps in my country
I understand that Market Enabler also doesn't work for wifi only Xoom?
Does anyone know a way how i could buy apps?
Samsung instead of updating my note to JB can u please give us the tizen update. I can see the monopoly of google on smartphones.
U can use the nokia maps if maps are the issue. I want a good working environment on my phone. Not these fragmented files and apps, keyboard hanging, wifi signals droppig randomly, battery issues, clipping and seperate camera apps.
I want u to integrate the basic features like cam, keyboard and home screen within the system. With most of its variables initialized at all times. Not like a seperate apps then starts when i open it requiring time.
Plus make the camera app stripped with just basic shutter click and flash feature with room to integrate the exposure, type of shot, filters and all these seperately installable in the stock app. So we can customize and feature load the same system app. Instead of using instagram and pudding camera.
As with the keyboard make it very simple and run all times with low mem consumption. Most keyboards and even stock keyboard needs 48 mb of ram while running. I think its too much for just a keyboard. Make it simple no loggers no predictions, no skins but make room to incorporate all these things on need.
For browser chrome is no doubt on top but we need fladh support. If google has bad term with adobe i dont think we wants adobe to suffer, they gave us the entertainment for more than a decade and has the potential to do so.
For graphics make the tizen support all platforms. Ask microsoft to let u lisence direct x which they are retiring.
Make new alliance for your new OS. Google already misled us with the word open source. They should have said open customization but i cant change many things on android. Lets say i dont want the home screens i just want the app drawer. We cant make it happen so sorry its no customization.
Also if u want tizen to compete well, load it with compilers and debuggers like the native linux and u will see development on the run for your new platform.

Actually these android flavors are nothing just a gimmick. Making people buy phones just for an update. Vanilla android update is nothing just a UI tweak in the name of project butter and blah blah blah. Thanks to samsung to give us more features above that android.
Google didnt do anything to make the OS more secure with the updates which is really needed. I have seen a rootkit that lets people scroll through all ur I/O via wifi. More like the wifi tethering in background. We cant even trust all the custom roms, if we are dealing with sensitive mails and other stuff.
Soon people will know that these roms and customization and everything is basically us compromising our data on daily basis.
It will soon get exposed.
So we didnt get what we needed from an OS here.
If we want android UI we will make a launcher or theme to enjoy this experience.

Well complains and criticism leads to improvements. Why do u use custom roms just to get better experience, why do u complain then. Why dont u use the out of box software. Sorry but you are writing nonesense here. My Note is rooted and I have successfully removed Google+, the native email and Gmail clients, Google search, the whole social media crap... The only thing from Google you actully have to use is the Google account for purchasing apps and synch your contacts and calendar. But not even that is necessary. You can get your apps from other markets like Android pit or Amazon, there are also dedicated open source markets. And you don't need to synch your data with Google. There are various companies that provide their own synch services like Webis, the enterprise that offers Pocketinformant. Or you can simply backup your contacts and calendar using one of the different software solutions out there. So tell me, where is the dependency your are fantasizing about?
Your post is utterly irrational. You accuse Google and it's Android os of beeing monopolized and closed, forcing its users to use services they don't want to use. But you are demanding Tizen os, a software completely written, designed and thus owned by Samsung. If you had Tizen on your phone, Samsung could do whatever they want with it's services, software... you would have a closed ecosystem like iOS and Windows Phone. Nice prospect isn't it?
Do you know what it is that you actually want? Next time please use your brain and do some rational thinking before posting something that by itself does not make any sense at all.
Oh and before I forget about it. You are claiming Google has not developed Android. If it has not been Google, who do you think has written all the code all the different Android versions consist of? The developers at xda? You? Santa and his elves? Rudolf the red nosed reindeer? Do you think you can simply take Linux load it onto a phone and bang you have got Android? I really look forward to getting an answer to that question from you

Because the moderator of this forum does not want links to the app store in this forum I will show you a screenshot verifiable by going to app annie ranking website. Now if you would like to share this on your blog you have permission as I am making this to help developers learn.
Deciding What I was Going to make
1) I decided to make a game that had very simple controls.
2) I am just a pixel artist but I know majority of gamers like vector art. So I brought artwork from an artist who is indie developer friendly. I went for a non- serious cartoony character.
3) I made the game easy enough so that a gamer can play it without instructions.
Before Launch
1) After I finished the game I didn't release it to the appstore , that would equal a fail. I played the game and took screenshots about 8 of them and narrowed it down to 3 . The screenshots I picked had to look funny or be humorous for the simple type of game it was.
2) I posted screenshots of the game coming on facebook groups about 10-12 of them that I was on. I did this for 2 days in a row 2x a day. Also I tweeted the game is coming.
3) I also made a video of the game did the same thing posted it on facebook groups and twitter multiple times a day.
4) Set up android ADs with the little marketing budget I had $80 . This would give me a small boost in downloads.
Launch
1) Launched my app , posted on facebook and twitter that its finally arrived . Also launched the small AD campaign. And here comes the numbers
Day 1 250
Day 2 150
Day 3 150
Day 4 80 Ran out of money in banner AD campaign had to find more
Day 5 89
Day 6 190
Day 7 140 Got featured in top new free in Adventure category , lower banner AD campaign
Day 8 130 Started getting good organic traffic from Top new free section so cut down to much less banner AD campaign
Day 9 103 Finally hit #49 after going well over 1,000 installs July 4Th
****Special Note******
I started the game with 2 modes of play. In those 8 days I updated the game 2 times to bring the total modes of play to 4 modes of play. This extended playing time and kept my game installed on people's devices. Real content updates are critical to kept users playing your game especially if its a simple one. Just add different themes or 1 new badguy that stands out makes huge difference.
****Special Note*****
And I am still fighting to get higher on the list. I poured everything I could muster up into getting to this spot but some bigger companies came it around day 5 and gave me a heavy fight. Hopefully I can reach higher but for last couple of days its been a battle to stay in the top 50. Any questions ask away.

I tried to promote my game for a long time) I used many of marketing tools to get downloads, but without bugdet i cant do that or i think so. Can you help me and answer to some ques i have:
1) What groups in facebook did you use? (or what kind of groups (android, gaming etc...) (Also ofcourse what channel in twitter did you use - # )
2) How did you design your screenshoot before releasing (mb you print on screen "Cooming soon" or etc.)
3) With what ADs company did you cooperate? (Admob, adwords...) And what boost did you get? (15 downlads per day or much?)
I will be appreciative if you will answer to me) Thanks.

1) A bunch of facebook groups here
https://www.facebook.com/groups/108079516002935/
https://www.facebook.com/groups/152169141638746/ huge group I post 2X a day
https://www.facebook.com/groups/754826104557129/
https://www.facebook.com/groups/248027618719895/ This group will get you downloads and ratings quick by trading
https://www.facebook.com/groups/AppInnovators/ huge group
Plus more but thats just to start and you will get downloads for sure. How many depends on your graphics honestly.
2) Just took in game screenshots nothing fancy just the game in motion. I posted a small description under screenshots. Also open a thread on this website and just use that link on facebook. http://androidfreegamesapps.forumotion.com/
3) I used aye T Studios AD service as they are the cheapest. https://www.ayetstudios.com/ Of course to rank you must choose only one country to target. They charge $10 to get 80-85 installs and you will need 500-600 to rank in small countries. The larger the country the more you need.
Secret:
Vietnam is the easiest country so save up $80-$100 and pick adventure or arcade category and you should rank in top 40 . Plus you will get into top free list which then you dont have to pay for installs you get them organically.
Thanks a lot! It was really helpful! But i have one more ques!) I will need approximately 500-600 downloads to rank - per day?, or totally in a row of couple days...And how do you think, to rank 50+ in USA, how much downloads i will need? (per day or totally...)

In a weaker country like india and vietnam you need 120-200 downloads per day for 4 days to rank in top 100. After 6 days you be in the top 50 and top new free so a total of 800 downloads spread over 6 day will do it.
Now U.S. is really tough we are talking about 20,000 downloads spread over 3-4 days to reach top 10. Double that to reach top 50 which currently I can't do yet .

But sadly all ad click from those countries dont make you any money because Admob doesnt value those customers as buying customers.
The most important thing is what was your profit return on that investment ? And what was the price you got per 1000 impressions (eCPM) or whatever ad network you used. Usually I hear people get 200,000 impressions from India and make $10 total from that.

I use Notifymob which pays weekly. The 1st week I got 2,600 impressions and made $13 . Does Admob pay for installs or just clicks and impressions?
200,000 impressions and only $10 that seems very unbelieveable. Yes smaller countries give less revenue but I am thinking long term if you game ranks and you have enough downloads over time you will make back your investment and more.

This is what I earned with my 2048 Numbers Mania game in the first 2 months, €8.31 for 90,909 Impressions. Bru-tal....
How do people even make money on Android games ? Interstatial ads (full screen ads) do make money but you can only show that once or a couple of times in the game.

Ok damn!!! 90,000 impressions you should be seeing around $40 dollars a month at minimum. That means they only paid you for impressions and not clicks or installs. Installs alone you should get .10 cents to .30 per install. Honestly just join the AD network I am on , they pay every friday once you reach $25 bucks and with your traffic you will reach that fast.
I think I told you about it before here is the website.
https://www.notifymob.com/
100% you will be making much more money. The basic SDK has 2 pop ups when app opens and banners along the top of screen. Seriously check it out today , then thank me every friday.

Choosing which ad units to use depends on the type of app and app experience you want to offer. Often, games have different strategies; however the concepts are the same.
Some developers create more spammy-types of apps with short life expectancy, while others prefer to create apps with utility that have more longevity. In the first case, excessive ads is the strategy and preference of the developer which can yield astounding revenue results, but that usually does not last long because users get frustrated (which leads to them uninstalling the app). In the second case, engaging the user in a manner that is pleasant and more tolerable is vital to a successful long-term strategy. Email me and we can discuss the details. It all really comes down to how YOU want to do things and what type of experience you want your users to have. We make suggestions, but ultimately we give the control to the developer and work with them to implement a strategy that best suits their app and vision.
All the Best,
Blake
