Three uk disable 3g android - Networking

I have 3g or 3.5g permanently enabled because three is a 3g network and when you click use only 2g network you lose signal and.connection completely, i know they use the 2g signal off vodaphone is there anyway to disable 3g to save battery because 3g is a huge battery drain without losing all connection? Android phone.

I'm really quite late on this one I know so apologises for that!
Three only have a 3G network. They currently share Orange's 2G signal as a backup. Recently, they started turning off that 2G backup in areas they thought their own 3G was good enough, so, if you disable 3G and you're in one of those areas then you will get no signal at all. Maybe Three weren't the best network to choose if you only wanted to use 2G!

I didn't say i only wanted to use 3g i said i wanted a way to save some battery by turning it off when i don't need it. 3G uses battery like leaving wifi permanently enabled.

Does anyone actually use 4G?

I find myself either on wifi or 3g 99% of the time and I rarely even turn on the 4g radio. Does anyone actually use 4G more than wifi and 3G? I don't like that I have to turn it on and off, if I could leave it on all of the time and not destroy my battery it would be great.
Sure. When I'm sitting down out of the house and know I'm going to be doing some serious browsing.

I would definitely use it if I lived in an area that had 4g but it would be a toggle thing like wifi if I did use it

Works great in Dallas.....
Is the premise that the 4G radio draws more battery power than 3G a solid assumption? Subjectively, I find that 3G is a battery hog. But I have not tested rigorously to compare 3G and 4G.
I do whenever I want to use my iPad and I'm away from home.
I get better battery with 4G
I think there are some drawbacks to using 4G. Pictures messages don't come in and sometimes the market is a little bit slow to do anything. But I have had 4G on for the last week, and can make it through the day with juice to spare (I get to work at 7:30am and plug it in at 10PM.)
It seems like the 4G sleep mode does what it is supposed to. I am running Baked Snack 1.3.

I'm with you... really, I find myself finding excuses to use 4g just because I should since I'm paying the 10 dollar fee... mostly i just use it when i have very large downloads or if i'm plugged in and receiving a good signal ill kick it on while doing some browsing... but really i haven't found much real use for it consistently... in part because its such a battery hog (which i don't understand why it hogs so much more battery than 3g but w/e) and in part because wimax isn't Officially released in nyc yet... so my 4g coverage is spotty and minimal at best.
I disable 3G 95% of the time for the massive battery savings. I just use 4G and wifi when the need for data comes up. 4G turns on faster than re-enabling 3G via the Quick Settings app.

So you have found 4G is less of a battery hog then 3G? I won't have 4G till Dec so I don't know. I found on AT&T 3G was a hog and I would turn it off it I wasn't on the net.

how does one cut off 3g, unless you talking about airplane mode, which is difficult to do when u get a lot of call and texts, ... i need my device fully functioning as far as phone services go...
but if there is a way to disable 3g (data only and still have operational phone services, id love to know how to do that.
I use 4g all the time. That is my main source of internet. I don't have a wifi connection so 4g is my lifeline.

That's another feature that I miss from WMs modded roms. I could turn off 3G and just run on AT&T edge network. You may need a modded rom or root you phone to turn off 3G on this phone.
Well, the Switchpro widget has a data connection toggle that cuts off 3g, but I'm unsure of how to do it manually through menus.

3g what is 3g? I for one never had a 3g phone and I don't plan on using it. Why would I use 3g when I have 4g and pay extra for it? 4g coverage in Boston and outside of Boston is very good, so I'm not sure why I would ever use 3g.

3G is a older and slower connection than 4G. We all don't have 4G yet. Some have said that 4G uses more battery then 3G. Alot are trying to get the most out of their battery and try different things.
I use it to download psx roms , movies, kernels, epic roms etc. Its useful.
I live in DC, and I have always leave 4G in auto on. I barely notice the diffeence between 4G and my wifi. Now, that's pretty cool. 4G is WAY faster than 3G in my area.
4G use to be a big drain, but with the latest update I find my phone always lasting the whole day. My Palm Pre would always struggle by 8PM, and it would get less use than my EPIC 4G.
I use it all the time in Atlanta, and even get a good signal in my house.
well I am giving spirnt one yr for 4g in my area which I am pretty sure it will not happen, so my next upgrade I will be going back down to 3g. 3g phones by then should have either a 4.0 or 4.3 screen which I want anyway and a 1ghz would be nice to 8) .

stop going from 3g/HSPA/3.5g/"4g" to Edge

I don't think this was working before the update, but now u can enter the
*#*#4636#*#* command and select WCDMA only to stay on 3/3.5g.
And before anyone asks
WCDMA only means 3g and 3.5g which means if your signal is strong enough, HSPA+/4g
Im just curious where do u enter that code?

in that case, shouldn't it be WCDMA Preferred?.... if you end up in a EDGE... only area...?
also... I thought GSM Auto PRL.... was the best option...

Fair warning... this move will impact your battery life heavily.
gsm auto prl can save u a bit of battery life but usually prefers edge if the 3g signal isn't strong enough.
Wcdma only wont allow for a 3g to edge fluctuation. It will force 3g. Problem is, if your in an area with poor coverage it'll be either 3g or nothing and you may find yourself with no connection at all since the phone wont bring u to edge.
Wcdma preffered is like the opposite of gsm auto prl. It will prefer 3g.

Thanks sheek, I guess my best bet would be to good with WCDMA preferred, since reception is shaky in my area...
I think this might be better since it will waste less energy capturing a weak edge signal in a weak area.
working so far. ill report bat life in due time. i cant see how it would really affect it. i hate when my g2 hits edge. if by not using it because of edge saves battery then im fine with a dying battery. i have spares and extended bats anyway

Yup. That's exactly what I do too.
I have a friend who lives in Philly; one of the best tmobile footprints exist in this city. Wcdma only and wcdma prefer netted no gains or losses except when he crossed and passed Camden new jersey.
Or search "radioinfo" in the market and get the app named network that pops up in the search.

That's not the only difference between the modes.
WCDMA Only will only lock in the 3G signals and switch over if there is no more signal for 3G reception.
-Only use this if you're in a metropolitan area or are covered in abundant 3G signals.
WCDMA Preferred will drain more battery, the reason being that it'll scan the airwaves constantly in search of better 3G signals. You are right about it having a wider 3G signal threshold.
-Use this if you're in a 3G abundant city but not where if you're noticing frequently 3G to E switching as it'll adversely kill your battery.
GSM Auto PRL will shrink the threshold for 3G signals as well as less frequent scans for better signal. Generally E to 3G/H transitions happens on 1.5 to 2 bars of 3G signal, but the phone will remain on 3G unless there is an EDGE signal that is better and thus may provide better data transfer speeds or if 3G/H signal is gone.
-Benefits for battery life but not great when better signal is a necessary. Would not recommend this mode if signal is scattered.
As you can tell from my city in my sig, I have a choice between the three, I went with GSM Auto PRL due to battery life being of importance to me as I'm not necessarily next to a tap in 8 hour gaps.
Hope this helps better than my original post.

I have never even touched an HSPA+ connection and I live in an area where it's apparently abundant.
Switched SIMs for a newer one and still nothing. I was told to wait for the 2nd OTA that's coming out by the 8th (And I'm still calling BS on that)
Why in the hell would they push out 2 different OTA's in 1 week for a single device?
I'm hesitant to do this because I don't know if it is my phone being flakey or the actual area. According to TMobile's data coverage website I am in the middle of a massive solid high speed zone... but I constantly flake to Edge.
I don't want to change this setting and it cut out on me entirely, that it may be the actual area. But I guess all I can do is try
The one thing I've noticed about the phone is that signal drops when holding it to use the keyboard, if this information's any help.
I found I was hemhoragging battery at some point with 50% no signal according to cell standby. But it wasn't caused by selecting WCDMA only - i am bathed in hspa/umta. Instead I turned on airplane mode while plugged in, waited a bit, then off, then unplugged. Then restarted phone to recovery (clockwork), wiped battery stats, and restarted. Running fine now.

Poor and fading signal strength

If you install roam control from the market, it will force your phone to roam and in the process turn your phone into a verizon phone since you will be using there towers It solved all my reception issues, just be sure to check allow data roaming and you most likely will not have another problem with reception. Oh also you must be rooted for it to work
Yeah but when using roam control the internet speed isn't 3g

The 3g icon is displayed on my phone and actively in use since i enabled data roaming, so i dont see your point? Data is fast and reception is good, dont be a debbie downer

try testing your speed. just because the 3g icon is displayed doesn't mean you're getting it. and the contract between sprint and verizon stipulates that sprint customers roaming on verizons network are restricted to 1x speeds.

Im on wifi most of the time anyways, and when Im not (If I remember) I turn on 4g, so thats probably why I never noticed 3g being any different As far as signal strength, roam control does make you have excellent service for making calls, there is no denying that.

did i get a lemon N4?

so many issues i don't know where to start!
1)first i had wifi issues with router using wddrt
2)phone HEATS up alot especially using LTE
3) network 3g/H slow speeds ( not sure if its my account on rogers, or the rogers network) but my speedtests on both H,3G,4G(LTE) have been painfully slow
4) bad radio antenna?
i have solid blue 3 bars of H, yet i can't seem to connect to any apps to the internet
now when i try to install app, it keeps saying no space
just did a test on speedtest using toronto server and i got 0.94Mbps 136ms ping on 3g
my 4g(LTE) was even slower! .58Mbps one bar on 4g using ltemobile.apn settings
using PHONE INFO app, i mostly get UMTS more than i get HSPAP signal strength around -103 dBm 7asu
Of course the phone heats up using LTE, because it is not supposed to use it! Yes, it has a SOC that can utilize it, but not the amplifier and other pieces on the board.
If it's taste sour then it could be a lemon!
I doubt the phone's a lemon. You probably fudged something up. Wipe/format/re-flash and try again.
If that fails, I live in Toronto. I'll fix it.
how do i get a constant HSPAP signal? 90% of the time my signal is 3g UMTS which is very slow?

You don't. The phone goes from UMTS to HSPA+ when data is actively transferring. If data is not transferring, it will sit on UMTS.

Wifi + 4G on at same time?

I came from a gnexus and on that phone it use to be when on wifi at home it would turn off 3g/4g, with the G2 I notice 4G is always on?
I would prefer to turn off 4G at home since my 4G is not the best and probably using more battery? I know it not using 4G for data but why is the 4G still on when it using wifi?
Thanks
Just aesthetics. I modded mine to remove icons when on Wi-Fi connection. Mods are around forums. As far as I have seen, on the Verizon variant at least, there is no 3G only switch. :/. I've only seen it on international version.

Are you sure that 4G is on when on WiFi? Because if you go to System Status, it usually shows Mobile Network State as "disconnected" when on WiFi.
