Im in the northern chicago area and I'm able to connect to 4g but the connection is slow and unstable...(even with 4 bars). Ive extended the idle time using ##data# but still I have the same issues??? Anybody with a solid connection care to share their ##data# settings? Im thinking the issue might in the settings......

I'm in Seattle and see similar 4G behavior. Usually 2 bars or so and not great performance (marginally better than 3G). I'd be interested to see if this can be improved by tweaking the settings also.
the 4G antenna in the EVO is half the size of the USB one, I don't even get signal at my house on my EVO, yet I get 1.5MBs on my USB stick. Size matters.
Idk about 4G but i just moved into a new house and i have TERRRIBLE reception no matter where i am. If im not outside, it sucks. Its funny though, as soon as i step out the door, 5-6 bars. Im keeping the phone in hopes that as soon as they get 4G around here (Elmont, NY... Long Island), things will change. =\
sprints 4g is in a horrible part of the spectrum. it's frequency is too high to pass through anything

unless you are a running a stock rom with the latest updates, i don't think you can make any of these complaints that you all are unless 4g isn't fully up and running in your city. My girlfriend just got the white evo and we installed the latest updates and she gets a very good 4g signal, i have the black evo running fresh 0.5.3 and i get a pretty good signal myself. Not to mention we live in mpls and 4g isn't even officially here yet. A lot of these problems people are having are user errors, flashing things with no knowledge of what they are doing. I would say go back to stock do to ota update with the new radio and wimax enhancements then tell me what type of 4g coverage you are getting. otherwise you are just trusting the chef that everything is set up right which i would take with a grain of salt because non of them seem to understand exactly how the wimax radio works as of yet. Proof of this is all the problems people are having after trying numerous roms

That's not very encouraging, I am very disappointed by Sprint's 3g speeds. I have yet to see over 1mbs, and over the 4th of July weekended saw .2-.7 mbs. Yes, .2 as in 192kbs. This was in Miami.

I started this thread with the intentions of looking into the settings of the wimax ##data# menu....not too rant about the service. I believe with the good signal I'm getting and the fact that I do connect shows that there's an issue with either the roms were flashing or the setting mentioned above. Anybody care to post their settings?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Changing the wimax idle sleep time from 10 secs to 300 secs could help. My 4G stays on pretty much constantly now instead of switching back and forth between 4G and 3G. You would need your MSL to edit the settings though.
I have similar issues in the chicago land area as well. Very frustrating. I am using a stock rooted rom, but I am using an older OTA update. When I'm outside I always have a strong 4G signal. However, as soon as I go in doors I either loose the signal or have a very weak one. Before you say anything about updating, my GF's EVO is completely stock with the newest OTA update and her 4G behaves very similarly. I actually pick up a better signal at times. It just sucks because if the signal was just a LITTLE bit stronger I would be really happy.
Thats just due to the spectrum used for wimax is at such a high frequency that it does not penetrate walls very well. I'm not sure how sprint will try to remedy this problem, I'm not sure but I get strong signals at my work office and thats inside a building. At home I can get 4G if I am outside once inside I cant seem to get it at all.
What's "##data#" ? I would search it but haven't quite figured it out yet on the app. Google didn't help either (surprisingly).

jr - I am in Gold Coast and recently noticed the 4G signal was junk. It used ot be great inside my 13th floor apartment. I went to the sprint store and they said one of the towers was being serviced (they called a tech. and he said this while I was there). They said end of this week it would be fixed. I was going to give them another week or so and see what the deal is then.
IMO it kind of defeats the purpose of having 4G then. 90% of the time that I want to surf the internet or use 4G I'm indoors, and I would imagine that goes for pretty much everybody. I know this isn't a problem for everybody so it seems, but I think for a lot of people it is.
interesting you say 4 bars of 4g. when i look at my phone i can get up to 6 vertical bars for 3g's signal strength, but with 4g on, and outside i can get 3 "bars" more like "upper wifi arcs" above the 4g signal. and inside my 4g doesn't even register anything, it just shows 4g with no arcs...
however my technique is to put the phone right next to the window and run my micro usb cable from there to my computer. and i then get great data connection...
still experimenting, (had the phone for less than a week) but i think it might work better to go to menu/settings/wirless&networks/ and uncheck mobile network so the phone doesn't use the 3g for data connection when 4g isn't there...
thus if the 4g signal is low, it doesn't drop it to grab the higher signal 3g...
lastly. i'm heading to the store to try to pick up a 2 buck plastic soap dish with a suction cup for the "high tech holding station" on my window. that and a 10 foot micro usb cable i think that will help even more...
best of luck.
I have figured out where in my neighborhood I can get a 4G signal (and I too keep my phone near the window when I want to use it at home). However since the OTA, I noticed that if my 4G signal drops it won't come back unless I toggle the 4G radio. It will just sit in "scanning" and use 3G.
Anyone else noticing this problem?
I would assume that one of the settings/timers need to be tweaked, but I have no idea what my those values were before the OTA.

4G has nothing to do with 3G. Clearwire maintains the 4G network and Ericsson maintains the 3G/1X network do if your 3G is bad now, it won't be any different when 4G launches unless Ericsson improves the situation.
If I'd got this device predominantly for 4G...Id've returned it in day one...(IN Chicago also). In fact wouldn't have bought it going in knowing what I knew about the spottiness of tapping into 4G frequency wirelessly.
that makes absolutely no sense.
per your words, 4G has nothing to do with 3G as in Clearwire has nothing to do with Ericsson so what would it matter if Ericsson decided to step its game up if Clearwire is the 4G company?
4G is on a whole different frequency not to mention a whole different tower technology and tower location possibly so there's definetly a good chance that I can maintain a great 4G signal once it arrives in my area compared to the terrible 3G coverage I get.
well see what happens... my luck they will never put 4G by me lol.
I thought I had seen something about radio issues one time but now I can't find the thread. I've noticed that in places that my evo would have great reception the nexus goes between 3g and 1x alot. Also the wifi is a little strange every once and a while I have to reset the router so the nexus will see my network. All computers connect fine but the nexus doesn't even show my network in the list.

I noticed the same thing. I had both a Evo which was on stock HTC Sense, and I also had a Dell Netbook with built in WiMax. Both the Netbook and the Evo had 2-3 bars for 4G WiMax. 3 being full signal.
On the Nexus in the same locations, I only see 1 bar for WiMax 4G. I never loose connection though just the signal appears to be weaker then the Evo / Dell Netbook.
No was on cm7 on the evo. Also when I do the *#*#4636#*#* I see that unknown network is selected.

Yeah, I think this is causing battery drain for me as well. I'm pretty disappointed but I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and attribute it to a software issue.
My epic keeps flipping from 3g to 1x and I'm even using amplifier. My touch pro 2 had a app that forced 3g only. I really hope there is a way to do this with the epic 4g. I'm sure there is, but it's way above what I know about phones. If anyone knows of anyway to do this, please let me know.
1x means its roaming. If its switching between 3g and 1x, your phone is trying to find a strong signal.if it keeps going to 1x, you have a weak sprint signal and its roaming onto verizon.i have this problem at work, and it drains the battery quick.i use the app "roam control" to set my phone to roam only to save battery.hope this helps

Thanks guys, I got my msl and did that now it stays on 3g. It is working great. I'm going to try flashing different modems to see which one works the best at my house. Thanks again.
I only needed to do this because my phone would want to keep going to 1x, which I guess is the strongest signal at my house. My 3g signal is only 2bars at best, where as 1x is 3-4 bars, but for using internet service 1x sucks. Thanks again guys.

Original posting:

Meant to post about this two days ago, and got busy.
I've been one of those with near zero signal in my home neighborhood. I live in Scotts Valley, near Santa Cruz CA. Since I got my Epic last October, I have been extremely frustrated that I get 0/1 bars at home, the signal is too weak to be usable for phone calls (constant digital dropouts -- conversation is impossible), and of course pathetic data rates when I can actually get a connection, which ALSO is never reliable.
When I bought the phone, a tower within sight of my home on another ridge was scheduled to get a Sprint site before the end of the year (2010), according to their website map. Then, this upgrade disappeared. I called, and no one knew anything, of course.
I've been roaming on VZW, who have a 4/5 bar signal here, via Roam Control ever since I got the phone. Fine for calls and text, no data worth speaking about.
Woke up two days ago, and was at first mystified, then thrilled to see 5 solid bars on Sprint!!!! 3G data rates consistently 1100/750 down/up!!!
Apparently, they finally got around to upgrading their coverage in the area. 'bout time
4G? Don't even go there. Not yet, not expecting it... Ever.
Wow my 3g speeds are 200 down max and I have no 4g
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
In a way, I have Sprint's poor coverage in my hood to thank for me needing to root and get acquainted with XDA. Otherwise no Roam Control. But it would rock to get a similar upgrade around here. Zoning and landscape just make it really unlikely. If I go just half a mile north or west it's totally different, with 4G and all. Hell, I can watch Netflix over 4G at my office, just not where I stay. I hope your story is repeated far and wide.
I've had the same experience as you. I've been with sprint for 11 years now and my signal is now amazing at the house. 2600 kbps dl, 550 ul. On average, of course. They upgraded the tower nsar my house last year.

That describes me. At home forced roaming so I can actually make and receive calls, data over wifi.
With the RC tasker plugin, phone automatically switches between forced roaming when in range of my home network, then back to "automatic" when out of range.
It's a workable solution, but not something I should have to do.

This may be a bit off topic, but I roam ALLLLL day when I'm at work, it gets me quite angry, and I continue to use data and phone while I "roam" , and saw a charge for roaming one time but called sprint and asked them how the **** I am roaming within my coverage area. They fed me some BS but took the charge away. I've never seen a charge for roaming since. Do you guys get charges?
So far as I know, with my family 2 phone everything plan, roaming is included.
Edit:
I just looked, it doesnt say roaming anywhere, but when looking at changing my services, the only roaming option given is Canada Roaming.
Edit 2:
Found it.

I do get good 4G coverage from VZW most of the places I go. But the fact that the coverage is not 100% makes it useless for real-time application. This morning I was on a conference call using Skype dialing a regular phone number. In 30 minutes the call dropped twice, both due to I drove through a spot with no 4G coverage. As the phone switched from 4G to 3G the Skype connection was cut momentarily and the call dropped. On my OG Droid X on 3G this rarely happens.
I wish the phone handles switching from 4G to 3G more gracefully. Now I'll have to remember to turn off 4G when I start a Skype call. Quite annoying.
Any idea how to fix/workaround this?
This and failed text messages are the reason I left Verizon. ATT's 4G LTE is much boarder in cities and when you leave LTE areas then you fall back to HSPA+.

Except for almost the whole US except for a couple states has 3G.
I have a Blackberry on AT&T for work and the S3 and a Razr Maxx on Verizon.
In Dallas, there is no comparison that Verizon is better- never a dropped call, and data reliability is outstanding compared to AT&T.
I've had AT&T since before they existed as AT&T and their analog, GSM, Edge, 3G have never held up well in either voice or data in my 10-11 year's of experience with them in the DFW market.

Sprint's WiMax also unfortunately had this issue. The reason was because when your phone switches from 4G to 3G, your IP address changes thus ending any active connections. This was especially bad for WiMax since it was on 2.4Ghz making it have very spotty coverage.
I'm not sure if it's possible to retain the IP from a switch or if Sprint does this with their LTE network.
In my area, VZW is only LTE and has better signal than any others... guess I don't have any choice...
I love Verizon's Service. LTE is on point here in Orange County CA and I get consistently better service than anyone without it. My only concern is with the phone itself. It keeps freezing on the data side once to twice a day. I just have to turn off and then turn on mobile data to get it to work.
Thanks for all the info about coverage of different carriers. The point of my post/question though, is that when there's not a 100% 4G coverage, the data connection is disrupted when you switch from 4G to 3G, causing trouble in any application that requires a stable data connection.
Seems even if the 4G coverage is not 100%, there should be a better way of handling switching to 3G such that it doesn't drop data completely.

There's nothing you can do about it but the carriers can fix it.
The solution would be to keep the same IP address when switching from 3G to 4G. The reason video calls in skype, browser downloads, and other things stop is because the IP address changes when switching. If the same IP address was kept from the switch, that wouldn't happen.
One thing that carriers could do when connecting to 4G is: Have your phone connect to both 3G and 4G at the same time and then request the same IP for 4G that you had on 3G. Then it can switch to 4G and switch off the 3G connection thus retaining the same IP and leading to no interruptions. All of this would happen in probably less than a second. The same thing can be done for switching from 4G to 3G.
I don't see why carriers can't/don't do this. Either they haven't thought to implement it, or there is some other reason that would make this impractical.
