As I'm reading through the forum I saw someone ask, if we would be able to use the A500 as a phone with the upgrade to ICS. That made me think to whene I first got this tablet and it was consistently checking for cell signal and killing the battery at the same time. I hope ACER doesn't forget to remove them files.

You can probably just remove it and see what happens.
Seriously tho, just because it's named phone.apk, doesn't mean it's the same as in a mobile device.

No. The 500 and 501 do not contain a "true" radio like a mobile. True, the 501 uses a neutered version due to internal 3g data, but that's all. Unfortunately they both are almost identical in hardware, albeit a working sim slot.
It was called "cell standby", and the issue was fixed some time ago by adding the line ro.carrier=wifi-only (or similar) to the build.prop file. This informs the OS that it's not an a501 with internal 3g. Sometimes, the rom was installed on a 500 with a "#" in front of that line signifying an a501, resulting in looking for a signal.
In laymans terms.

I understand. I just remember when I got this tab (launch day) the cell standby was drain the battery. Just hoping Acer remembers to remove or disable it.

I don't want them to remove it for my a501 Please, please... keep it.
But seriously, with the ICS ports, things look different. Will probably have to wait for the official a501 ports and roms, to see the differences. Right now, the ports are only for the 500.

Operative words being "when I got this tab".
It's been so long since I've seen "cell standby", that I've forgotten which update fixed it.
Point being, if it's fixed now, what makes you think Acer will go in reverse when they finally release ICS (God only knows when) for our tabs?!?

So true. The Motorola Droid X was severely broken by updating to Gingerbread so there's no guarantee ICS will be a good thing for any tablet. We'll just have to wait and see.

I downloaded this app this morning, but after some testing I can't seem to capture anything. Not sure if it's the device or ROM (MIUI) . Can someone out there on MIUI test this as well and provide me some feedback?
I got it to work a couple times but it seems to be touchy. A coworker and I devised a plan to use it on another coworker while sitting right next to her muuhahahahaha!
Oops my bad, i'm on stock GB, no ROMs.

Hmmm... still, must be the device. I actually got it to work somewhat today, but it's kinda touch and go. I emailed the dev... hopefully I get a response.
As a sidenote, faceniff seems to work better, but sometimes I have issues trying to view sessions. Just can't win....
How ironic there is an update for Droidsheep and its supposed to fix this problem.

Anyone have any suggestions?
DroidSheep Works on Android 2.3.4 Galaxy S
I have tested it on Galaxy S 2.3.4 and it worked fine.
Droidsheep is removed from the andriod market now according to a tweet at @DroidSheep.
Although it is still possible to use by downloading it directly from the website and install it.
Just make sure you have installed required dependencies e.g arpspoof, licpcap, droidsheep and Root Privileges on android phone.
I wrote one Howto, but due to insufficient privileges i can't post URL. try search on google How to install DroidSheep
Ive tested it on MIUI and Stock. works fine but the Network slows down extremely!
It's scary how simple this app works!
Will droidsheep mess up the modem?
becuz i have played around with wifikill, droidsheep and faceniff today.
then a few hours later, my modem stopped working.
could any of the 3 apps be the cause? or my modem just got fried? lol
thanks!

Interesting. I just looked at our phones gps.conf and there is like 3 servers.
---------- Post added at 07:08 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:59 PM ----------
At closer examination and comparison it has the same 3 servers we have, some extrra command codes and it looks like a supplemental server at the end of the script. But I already get 9 out of 11 locks so may not have a stock gps.conf on CM9.

That is something I would like a fix for..I want consistant GPS. It can work great for 2 days but then one day...nothing. Even after a recent boot...you have to reboot again to get it working.

We would have to get in line behind Apple...LOL.
Also I wonder if stock glitches like that. I know the locks are less but does it connect all the time? I have some friends with Epics non-rooted and never hear them complaining about the gps.
Ei22 would get 4 locks max and would lose signal if traveling for a length of time.
El30 for me was very glitchy. My locks would blink on and off like the chip was having a seizure. Maps would constantly "re-route"
Fb15 is back to being just like ei22. Was just outside on a clear night. Had 12 sats in view and would never go above 4 locks max. I assume its the same as ei22 with it losing lock after a period of driving.
With the "gps fix" I get lots of locks and they hold on, however like a part above, some days it just won't work without a reboot which is super annoying when your trying to drive.

Just tried this gps.conf update - still maxed out at 4 locks...gonna have to flash the fascinate file (ei22 gps fix) to fix mine.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Lastly, I can confirm the ei22 fix still works in fb15. After I flashed that I got 8 out of 9 locks immediately.
Edit: attached the GPS fix that works for me. It replaces the epic gpsd file with the one from the fascinate which is more aggressive and locks as many sats as possible. I believe CM7/9 is using this same file so you only need this on TW roms.

When were you ever able to find **** to begin with? Searching is a chore on this site.
The number of posts that I am seeing with "I modified my A500 and now the ICS update won't apply or my tablet won't boot" seem to be increasing.
How reasonable is it to expect that Acer should make assumptions about exactly what is on the tablet before running the OTA installation?
Surely, if you change any of the checksums on either the internal file systems or the boot loaders, then you are asking for the scripts to fail and for something to break...
Can you ever return a tablet that has been modified back to EXACTLY a factory default state?
Caveat Emptor...
Because there are a lot of incredibly stupid people out there, that's why.

Because 95% of people that, just for example, "root", don't know what they're doing. All they know is that it allows them to uninstall 'bloat', install tools they wouldn't normally be able to run without it, replace files and tamper with code and file content as advised by their peers to get this and that working 'better'. They follow directions to the T, use one click tools or get entire modified OSs and proceed to tinker and tamper with software they don't really understand. When the poop hits the fan, somehow the blame shifts off them completely to Acer and just about anyone else.

I agree with you on most of that, but you gotta remember that we all started somewhere and the best way to learn is by getting right into it and tinkering, I do agree that most people don't understand what they're getting into and simply refuse to learn when someone tries to correct them.

I sure hope so cos I'm getting frustrated each day the update refuses to arrive. To be honest, I think I'm done with Android tablets. Android tablets are meant for mods/hackers. OSs/tablets by Apple,RIM and Microsoft are meant for guys like me who don't want to tweak or install ROMs. When updates are released by these guys, owners of their devices definitely get them without all these hassles.
My next OS will be Windows 8. That OS I'm very familiar with

It was explained on Acer ANZ facebook page last year, cannot recall when, it was either with the release of 3.1 or 3.2, that the updates are done by the batch numbers set by google, not acer. the updates are hosted on futuredial so when it gets hammered it's not even acer servers to which i doubt they have any.
It seemes Acer has updated their Acer Update Enhancement app in the Google Play Store. It's supposed to help those who still haven't got the ICS update. Try it out and see if that helps?

This is what Steve Kondik posted on OnePlus forums:
Just a quick update on the power issue in 30O..
Two issues that ended up in the build were identified and fixed. They weren't affecting everyone and were subject to hardware variations and timing, but our engineers worked quickly to get them resolved. The first issue was a very low-level system bus problem, while the second was a problem with how the proximity sensor is used to prevent false unlocks from gestures and double taps. We pride ourselves in the performance and low power consumption of 11S, and after these fixes our lab tests show improved numbers vs. 25R! This will go out as a small hotfix as soon as it's approved. Additionally, we are preparing another update in parallel that brings a few new features, a beautified lock screen, audio enhancements, polish on the new features in 30O, and of course bug fixes.
Both of these new builds are in the final testing and approval phases. I can't give any ETA because we are subject to third parties, but you should see the power hotfix in the next couple of days with the bigger update right on it's heels.
To ensure this doesn't happen again, we are bulking up our automated test systems to cover more cases, more often. Being a startup is both a blessing and a curse- while we can move fast on issues and updates, we are still building our automation and infrastructure. We depend on your feedback to tell us what we're doing right, as well as wrong! Additionally, we are working hard to reduce the time between updates even further so that they are more manageable.
Hang in there for just a bit and that unkillable battery will make a triumphant return.

I wonder if we go back to 25r if we will have to go to 30O then apply the new update or will they have a "new and improved" fixed 30O? BTW is your ability to have a different wallpaper on your lockscreen than on your home screen broken also?

Just pushed r13 which has a newer Touch Panel firmware from CM. Touch sensitivity seems much improved, which is a VERY welcomed plus. Also added support for PS3 controllers via OTG. I'll add MultiRom support on r14. Enjoy

or try and flash AK CM11S version, maybe latest _31b14 w/o changing back to 25R or smth else, (just to give a try as it is easier to change the Kernel than the ROM (you know...restoring stuff ))
