How much ram dose the atrix really have because if you look in sys/ram/size It says this 2097152 witch with a google search says it 2gb?
1 gb
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
The source where you read that info from is lying. As the comment above mine stated, the Atrix 4G has 1 GB of Ram.

Look at sys/ram/info
Mine resulting in:
Elpida-40nm:LPDDR2:x16:S4:1GB
All companies lies about actual space they say 1gb but there's only around 870 mb and after the phone takes about 300 mb for the android system u get 570 mb or 533 as my atrix showed

You say lie, but really they're only hiding the truth.
The phone DOES have 1GB of RAM, that much is not a lie. Some of the RAM must also be used as memory for the GPU itself, accounting for why even Android only sees "870 mb".
Lol I no the atrix has 1gb but how come sys/ram/size it says 2097152 dose it look the same as yours?
And my sys/ram/info say Hynix-54nm:LPDDR2:x16:S4:1GB

You might be using an international kernel/ROM.
Mine is a little different:
Elpida-50nm:LPDDR2:x16:S4:1GB
Ya. 50nm beats 54. ;-)
Edit: Size claims 2gb. I believe this probably has something to do with a "swap file" or some virtual memory scheme to increase effective memory. There is only 1GB of RAM physically located on the device though.

Regardless oh all of that you will never see or be able to use a gb of ram

I just got a Nexus One and under SD Card and Phone Storage it shows that I only have 194 MB free. Is that right? I thought it came with 512 MB free?
I looked online and couldn't find anything so I thought I would ask the Pros.
Thanks in advance.

Looks like their gonna unlock the other half of the 512mb of storage with the Froyo update
You for real?? So, they all come with 512MB, but you can only use 194 MB at the moment?

Yeah =P
Dunno why but just like on the Motorola Droid how they have an 800mghz processor and they clock it down to 550mghz (probably to make sure the first batch don't fry and then unlock the full features later)
The current kernel can't support more than that, with FroYo and the new kernel you'll be able to utilize all of it.
If you want to take advantage of all of it now, unlock, root, and flash a rom with the highmem kernel (damn near all of them).
I think you guys are confused. It sounds like he is talking about the phones internal storage, not RAM. The place where everything is installed.
192MB is quite a bit of space for downloading new apps since most are only a few megs at most. The reason you don't have all 512 available is because Android and the default apps are taking up space as well.
I'm pretty sure he's talking about the internal storage. The OS itself and the other built in apps take space so that's the reason you only have that amount.
As I understand the epic is supposed to have 1 GB of internal ROM and 512 MB of RAM as is shown here: http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones/SPH-D700ZKASPR-features
However when i go to samsung's program manager under summary tab it says i have total of 325 MB RAM and 498 MB internal storage. Is everyone else matching my specs? so confused
my internal memory reads 498
That page reads
16GB ROM/512MB RAM
its right but apparently some was taken for the lag?
Remember that some of the internal memory is not usable by the user because it is allocated to hold information about your file structure and formatting. It shouldn't be that much space though...
It does come with 512 ram some is fixed allocation most likely to fix the lag so what is left over is 325.
Welcome to userland.
498 mb is the actual mb when you do the math in kb. but they can sell it as 512 just like hard drives and any other storage you never get full spec. as far as the 325 reamaining well apps and all other stuff need mb to store, sprint apps take ALOT of room.
I remember reading somewhere the froyo update addresses this somehow.

Yeah, it turns 325MB to 304MB, according to Galaxy S owners in Europe. So for some reason we get even less RAM
Coming from a Nexus my only question about the epic is where's all the RAM?!
The nexus had 512mb too and I had almost 300mb free on boot. This thing is in the 100s and drops to 50ish after a few apps loaded! What's up with that?
Yea I came from a nexus too, and sorda wonder same thing. But I can say dk17 ran snappier than the nexus... but froyo is now slower and laggier than the nexus...

Welcome to bloatware. That is why we all want asop. With all the junk sprint loads on the phone even if you do not use it has a damn service running in the backround. Take a look. Download autokiller if you have root and set it to the 150 range and that will keep your ram in that range speeding up the phone.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
no, it's because not all of the 512mb in the epic is system ram
don't know the exact numbers, but there is also shared vram and stuff like that using the 512mb
I am wondering the same.I am always in the 50s
Every time I am on the browser, and switch over to a text
Or even press home, I tap on the browswer and it has to reload all over again.
Lame that it doesn't stay in memory.
My evo did not suffer from this.

Hmm ya I was wondering that... but even the Nexus had that with the stock rom. I'm not sure if it was kernel optimizations or just the simple fact of the extra process running.
Even if you kill al processes it still doesn't go anywhere near where the nexus with compiled roms.
anyone have any luck porting cyanogen's codebase? I saw a few threads on it but sounded to me like the project was dead
Is there a way to edit the allocation of the 512MB of RAM? There must be a way to give more to the system.
When official froyo is released, I want to start a thread that deals with the Running Services, what they do, and what the ramifications are for each one if its stopped and disabled from running. I have a feeling that a lot of these running services do not need to be running. CM_Service, the voicemail service, is one example.

Pretty sure the allocation is handled at the kernel level so stopping services and crap will never achieve the total ram if it isn't compiled properly.
So I bought my HTC Shift 4G but i think it's Defective. I've called HTC, Sprint, and Bestbuy. The 3 companies say the Phone Has 2 GB Internal Memory(ROM). However my Phone only shows 432MB :
203 MB Apps
69. MB System
159.6 MB Free space
Could it be Defective or They just don't know what they saying.
Would u guys tell me if ur devices are showing the same ??
I bought this phone cuz the 2GB. I'd hate to return it and get the big EPIC!!
thanks!!
I got 431 for applications(internal storage)
I figure the rest is system reserved by the fellows at HTC. That is where the OS/kernel is located. Probably locked away/system mountable only, to prevent us from obtaining root. ( any of you fellows who know better can feel free to correct me.) Just based on knowledge of linux etc. Not much in depth on the droid

I'm pretty sure it does in fact have 2GB of internal memory, however it seems like a big chunk of that is taken up by the operating system and maybe some is reserved for system storage/app caches/etc. Not 100% sure but I think that's why.

That's not actually not true, they claimed that the evo only had 1gb of internal memory but came with a 8gig sd card, disproving your theory right there.

Yeah what he said.
No conspiracy theories, just information...
Check here: http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=2946
It gives you the specs.
This is what I got from Root Explorer:
/app-cache - 4k used, 8.00MB free
/cache - 31.21MB used, 111.01MB free
/data - 351.02MB used, 80.70MB free
/dev - 12K used, 186.59 MB free
/devlog - 4.04MB used, 15.82MB free
/etc - 288.83MB used, 102.53MB free
/system - 288.83MB used, 102.53MB free
I'm not a dev so can't interpret it correctly but it does seem there's lots of memory here and there that could probably be partitioned to the /data folder for more app storage once perm root is achieved.
EDIT: I've removed lots of stock apps so your numbers will not match mine.
The first Shift that I picked up from Best Buy was indeed defective. Not because it wasn't showing the proper amount of memory, but because it locked up on me 5 times in the first hour that I had it. All I could do to get it to turn off is battery pull, and then when I put the battery back in i had a really tough time getting it to turn back on. They swapped it out for me, and my new one has been flawless.
i'm wondering (don't quote me on this) if the extra internal storage is hidden/locked by HTC so there will be room available when the new sense drops? i've heard it's a lot bigger than the current version with the stand-alone navigation/maps that it's going to bring with it.
Has anyone ripped one apart and checked all of the chips on board?
I would take it back to the store and exchange it.
Phone should have around 256mb for apps (With all the stock apps installed)
So I won a Nexus 4 8GB at a raffle at work yesterday. I currently have a Note 2 and an Optimus G but I'm going to keep the Nexus 4. Anyway right out of the box before doing anything I noticed it said I had 4 GB of 5.66 Total GB free. Why do I only have 5.66 total GB of internal space? And why do I only have 4 GB free right out of the box? Also I rooted, made a nandroid back up, installed a few apps and flashed the Xylon rom, now I onlay have 2.5 GB!!!! This is just rediculous. Does anyone know how I can free up some space? I don't store music or other large files but I NEED to be able to store a few nandroid back ups and a few roms.

Just factory reset and start over. Then manage your stuff.
A couple gb is the android system, etc., your basic behind the curtain stuff. The phone came with a bunch of the Google and other apps installed, killing another gb or so.
And then you wasted a ton of space on unnecessary fluff.

5.66 GB is all that you get with an 8 GB device as the rest is used by the OS for system apps and such. The 16 GB only has 12.9 available.
You should have 5.7 or so free out of the gate. Something is eating up near 2gb of space. Factory reset.

Actually that's would only be 100 MB of space and not 2 GB. 5.7 - 5.6 = 0.1 GB = 100 MB. And in his case 5.7 - 5.66 = 0.04 or 40 MB. Whcih is nothing.

What are you on about, read the OP. Your maths is right (sort of, its actually 40.96MB) but you are working with the wrong figures.
You seen to have missed the fact that the OP has only 4GB free, ie he has around 1.5GB eaten up.
more importantly OP where do you work that gives away free nexus' lol
Just keep 1 nandroid on the phone just in case...download rom zips when you need them and then delete them...space saved.

Sorry 'she'. So it should be easy to find what has used the space using apps or other more 'technical' means. However as its a new phone I would be inclined to factory reset it or even better just download factory image and reflash.
If you have missing space on a new phone then I would wonder what else is wrong.
Maybe the phone was a 'return'.
