ok so i have looked at alot of threads and can not seem to find my answer. so there are 2 nook colors at my local store one is like 199 and the other 250. does it matter what one i get? are they both gonna accept the root? my apologise if this has been answered i just could not find it.
The $249 is an upgraded, faster version of the $199 one. I believe it has been rooted, but the latest software update broke it? Or maybe I read that about the fire.
If money is not a problem I would get the newer one

i just dont want to buy a nook color that can not be rooted to cm7 that would make it a huge let down
From everything that I have read, the New Nook Tablet ($249) has a dual core processor and more ram. It is suppose to be faster at browsing the web and loading apps. But as far as running a CM7 rom on it, I cannot say where they are in the development stage. I assure you if you buy a Nook Color ($199) you will be quite happy with the speed and features of it running CM7 and overclocked to 1.3ghz. Hope this helps some.
so i havent really looked into it that much but i have seen alot of this overclock talk what and how does this work. and is it included in the cm7.

Yes, in the newest versions of CM7, the overclock kernel is built into the rom. Using the cyanogenmod performance settings along with Dalingrins Nook Tweaks app (free from android market) you can overclock the Nook Color to 1.3ghz processor speed. There are many other settings there to adjust external speaker and headphone volume.
so im gonna say thanks for the help. i will have to search now for the new cm7 root i guess huh?

Easy as PIE!
Nook Tablet same screen as Nook Color but dual core CPU and more memory (1GB). Can be rooted BUT has signed boot loader which makes it difficult to load alternate ROMS. Progress has been made using overlay techniques but there is no guarantee there will ever be a really good solution.
Nook Color boots by default from SD if bootable and therefore is very easy to load ROMs onto and easy to recover when anything goes wrong. Single core CPU and 512MB memory but with overclock and efficient CM7 ROM gives a good experience in my opinion. Also available on refurbished market from Barnes Noble with full 1 year warranty normally for around $149 but sometimes cheaper.
So if you want best most up to date hardware and are happy to stay with rooted stock then Tablet is good choice with possible promise of alternate ROMS in the future.
If you want flexibility of alternate ROMS and full control over device and can live with the lower spec then Color is the better choice at the moment.
I wouldn't go with the Nook Tablet as it has a locked bootloader that makes it basically SOL for custom roms. BN also seems be taking an Apple like stance against rooting and installing 3rd party apps.

Where is a kernel that will do 1.3? I've only been able to find one that goes to 1.2.

There is no performance from 1.2 to 1.3. I don't see the need for anyone to go that high.

Well I would be happy to hear it. My statement is based of the performance of my own Nook and I've seen many others around here have had similar results.

I ran androbench and this tablets i/o benchmarks are terrible!
How is there such a huge gap between the tf300 and the other devices used as references in this benchmark.
I am oc'd to 1.5 and have the sio scheduler enabled using atp tools.
Is this a hardware or software issue? Or am i misunderstanding these benchmarks and making something out of nothing?
Is there any thing that can be done to improve this?
Just figured id post my screenshots and hear some other opinions
can confirm this. Stock I/O is bad. In Quadrant about 300points behind custom Roms.
Well, are you guys happy with the performance of the TF300?
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using xda app-developers app
This is exactly what I was suspected, really hope its not caused by cheaper/slower integrated SD storage chip :-/
There is a real impact on performance when accessing internal storage, my TF300 goes to a complete halt if I download using Torrent to internal storage. However when I direct downloads to my external class 10 32gb SD-card I can still somewhat use my pad for surfing.

Its a nice tablet, and for the most part yes but, a new $400 device should not be dead last in preformance on any test. And its not just a little behind, its so far behind on some of the tests it almost dosent show up on the bar chart. I would just like to know why this one aspect of the tablet is so much worse than other devices when all the others are on par or better then the competition.
This thread is asking the same question about the TF700: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766836
So far, signs are pointing to slow flash storage chips, which can't be fixed. Hopefully, someone can provide a good answer.
This is expected.

I am very happy with it. As I said its a Stock rom issue. I don't use Stock, so I have better I/O
I don't trust benchmarks so much. It. has to feel good, that's what counts.
Even with the lag of. I/O its a very fast tablet. I Am about 5200 in Quadrand and about 13000 in Antutu
Well im stock rom but using sio not noop. It did help a little. How much of a difference does using cm9 or aokp make? i dont really want to void my warranty untill i use it for a while to make sure its not going to crap out on me.
if you use rom toolbox you can actually boost the I/O i believe up to 4096 kb which should improve it.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using XDA Premium HD app
Rom toolbox shows it at 4096 i set it anyway and the benchmarks are worse
This is interesting.. I've noticed accessing the internal laggy at tines too. Like whenever I'm installing apps from Google play it is horribly laggy yet I can go on my galaxy s2 update 10 apps at once and not even notice it in the background
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
Would running a custom ROM either help or fix this issue?
Well its either hardware or software. If its a hardware limitation then no, there is nothing that will drastically improve it. If its. Software then drivers or a kernel update could. At least thats how im seeing it.
AFAIK the Prime also suffers from the same crappy I/O performance. Also, I have read that the performance can be boosted up with custom kernels, so far there aren't any kernel devs working on the TF300T.
Using ATP_Tweaks changing the scheduler from noop to SIO has almost doubled my results in Reading and Writing Speeds, still the numbers suck (it went from 300-400 to 500-600).
always run a bench 5 times and get the average.. there is too much that interferes with these benchmarks especially the IO onces ... 1 background write and youll see a big drop in the score of the running bench...
Just ran antutu on stock...
Running in balanced mode.
8177
Data IO= 390
SD write= 7.1
SD read=18.2
Then installed atp_tweaks and changed to sio...
8065
Data IO=405
SD write=7.5
SD read=48.4
Only did a single run for each though.
Just run a quick test with the latest Skank. Just run it one time.
But as I told before Bench is not so useful. For me it all comes to the way the Rom feels. Never felt any lag in one of the Custom Roms. Can't tell anything about Stock, because I only had it on for about 10 minutes
I've been running AOKP on my GSII for months and love the ROM but I'm unimpressed with the Nook Color version. It has really bad lag in everything I do. I'm new to hacking the NC so I'm looking for the fastest ROM out there. Something doesn't completely pale in comparison to my GS2.
Does anyone have a ROM or ROM/Kernal combo recommendation? Is it worth V6 supercharging or running anything else to help speed it up?
Thanks much
nook rom
man i agree .every rom shakie .i kinda gave up on the nook for a little while.
i put cm9 simple on my FIRE now...what a difference. my kindle fire runs cm9 awsome...
Why won't me nook run like my FIRE? (NO LAG)

Several reasons. The Fire is a much more powerful machine, dual core 1GZ out of the box, hardware video acceleration, etc.
The first step when experiencing sluggishness or lag with the nook color should be to set maximum cpu speed to not more than 1100MHx... several nook colors have been known to have issues with any clock speed above this... remember, while the cpu's they put in them are capable of running 1200MHz ideally... they rated them at 800MHz for a reason.
CPU manufacturer aren't going to deliberately under-rate their processors for no reason... and they aren't going to do it to sell them cheaper... they do it because there was something going on that they are not comfortable supplying warranty for underperforming processors.
I have also noticed that sluggishness in rather static operations (like book page turns) can be improved by raising the min to 600 from 300. At least that is how it seems. Does that make sense?
I've bumped the clock on mine to the 1000MHZ range but left the lower at 300MHZ. Does bumping the lower help with just with idle performance?
I guess my biggest problem is that I'm comparing the NC loosely to my SGS2. I know that's not fair and I need to lower my standards here. But is there a reasonable expectation that screen swipes are smooth and basic programs like Kindle, email, and web browsing will run without stuttering excessively?
Is there one ROM that stands heads and shoulders above the rest in the speed category?

It's nothing fancy, but CM 7.2 Mirage has been very responsive and stable for me. I don't do any heavy graphics games or the like, but it works well for streaming Netflix. My reader and email apps are responsive. Mirage incorporates some of the optimizations from Supercharger V6 already, so there's not a lot of twiddling required. I run mine at 1.2 GHz with no issue, and have done so for months.
It's not life in the fast lane, but it's solid and makes the NC work well for the basics I bought it for.
+1 MiRaGe-Kang. It, the Nook Color, won't play Crysis but I don't ask it to. I want to watch a TV show, (screw HD. If you have to have HD buy an Apple product and haunt *their* forums), at lunch. Listen to audio books/music as I'm traveling, read something at night and beep me awake. Throw in the occasional solitaire, Angry Birds or Tetris to kill time in line and you've got the idea.
I follow the updates for fun but for the average user I would recommend that you just make sure the latest update is stable, apply it and not worry about it anymore until you start wondering about ICS or Jelly Bean.
Wow, this is definitely faster than the AOKP I was running. Noticed a big difference right away. Odd because AOKP is based on CM9 I think. Guess CM7 is just a better fit.
Thanks everyone for your responses
Though I would create a thread to see which of the many great JB ROMS people are running and maybe we can crown a champion??

I am running JB OC edition with last Untermensch Kernel.
I am on stock , but looking to for a rom , but none has me intrested at the moment.
I am not looking for new features on roms , i just want a smooth and stable rom , and everything else to be stock.
A bit like android revolution HD for Galaxy nexus.
Anyone know anything similar? Because on stock , launcher usually really slow , and performance wise for quad core it's just not there.
I'm running CM 10 M2.It runs smooth ‚but the camera records15fps videos.I hope they will fix it.CM did good job with this JB Rom

CleanRom
I've upgraded from stock JB to CleanRom 2.5. its night and day
I'm on CleanRom 2.5 also. Haven't tried much else though. I tried OC for a day, but wasn't able to get overclocked so I reverted back to CleanRom after a few failed attempts. I'm hoping we'll have an updated version of CleanRom soon (version 2.3 from the 700t forums)
Clean rom 2.5 its my first rom ever! on a android device (tf300 is my first android device) + untermensch kernel combined with and when i installed the clean rom i always can oc so u guys do something wrong. And i run the v6 script.
I am on CleanROM too, tried a few others but there were a few things I didn't like or had problems with.
Got no problem and can OC with CleanROM

hehe just came to the thread, nice timing.
No lag what so ever anywhere on this tablet now. I have made it lag by copying a movie, playing music and trying to browse the web. Pages lag a little bit but once they load its smooth and we all know that its the cheap internal card. I think its well worth it, i was using my brother TF300 that is stock and could not handle how slow it was.

Many thanks !
looks like i will be wiping my tablet and flashing it after all!
just remember to flash Unt kernel, latest is NOT in OP but one of the last pages.
I just installed JB overlock edition and it got better scores than CleanRom with unt's kernel :S for me.
Quadrant scores:
JB oc edition V2 (overclocked to 1.66ghz): total:6087 CPU: 15120 Mem: 3188 I/O: 9233 2D: 273 3D: 2622
CleanRom with unt's kernel (overclocked to 1.6 ghz): total:5735 CPU: 14144 Mem: 3890 I/O: 7592 2D: 309 3D: 2739
Hope I helped someone that can't decide what Rom he want's to install.
Why are there so many votes for the stock ROM? Is it that good? Seems like it's pretty easy to unlock the tablet and then load a custom ROM on. Any input would be appreciated.
boggles the mind don't it? I guess people are happy with Stock until they can use CM/AOKP
Very strange. Just loaded CleanROM. It's always tough to say what ROM to go with. CleanROM is nice, but I have to install the others to compare, I suppose. I wish there was a good pro/cons list of each ROM.
Hi
Im currently running Paranoid Android with Nova Launcher plus homescreen widgets and a fairly simple live wallpaper.
Gaming is not that great, emulators run fine but games like NOVA 3 and Asphalt 7 are choppy.
Ive checked CPU-Z and my CPU usage keeps jumping from around 10% to 100% so I guess I have a problem.
I know I could just uninstall a load of stuff and get rid of a lot of my customisations, which Im sure would help, but while Im on this I may as well get the best ROM I can for gaming.
Ive read stuff about CPU and GPU throttling and undervoltage setting etc, and to be honest I dont really want to go messing around too much.
Is there are ROM that has been optimised for gaming? Or should I revert back to stock? Or stick with PA and clean out all the crap?
Please help, I just got myself a MOGA PRO and its excellent, but choppy frame rates in most games are a real pain!
Thanks
Nat.

I would think that the kernel would have more importance in gaming performance than the rom itself, try FauxKernal/Matrix kernel which has slightly overclocked gpu
