Samsung GT 10.1 and Asus Transformer Prime quick comaprison - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

So I did a little 1 hour comparison of the 2 since my local Game Stop had a Prime on display. First impressions of the Prime, it's quite fast. Threw on the Asus Water Live wallpaper and things were still snappy going from screen to screen. Tested out the browser and it was pretty fast. There were a couple of response issues but no big deal. No keyboard input lag whatsoever.
Pulled out my 10.1 to compare. I'm running stock 3.1, OC'd to 1.4, TouchScreenTune app, and using supercurio's Voodoo Screen Tuning at the Native white profile.
Between the 2 I like the Prime's build quality better. As other reviews mentioned, it just feels better. I didn't think much of the reviews until I held it. As mentioned before, things were snappier (apps loading, swiping, etc) on the Prime. Of course I'm still at 3.1 and not sure if 3.2 made that much of a difference. Web browsing I found on the Prime was fast and scrolling was fast as well. Better than any stock browser I've experienced with Android. Compared to my 10.1 with the touchscreentune app and Dolphin for Pad, I still like the 10.1 better. I couldn't download Dolphin on the Prime. Overall touchscreen responsiveness and page scrolling I prefer my 10.1 with touchscreentune. But the Prime with stock browsing is pretty impressive.
Next important thing to me was screen quality. The Prime's screen is impressive. Crisp with EXCELLENT contrast ratio. I set it to normal mode vs the super IPS+ they had it on. Set both screens to 50% and ran the same youtube music video on both players. The Prime had better contrast with deeper blacks. Prime had a warm tint to the whites, but not as warm as Voodoo Screen Tuning's 6500k white profile. Even with Voodoo's native white profile, the colors on the 10.1 were more saturated than the Prime's screen. I believe it was in the Engadget review where they said colors seemed a bit flat in the bright hues. I noticed this especially in blues and reds, so I preferred the 10.1's colors on Voodoo's native white profile. I then google imaged a black jpeg on the Prime and there was 1 small light bleed on the right of the screen. Luckily it was in a spot where whether you're browsing, watching a movie, or doing anything, it wouldn't bother you because you wouldn't see it unless it was on a very dark scene/image.
I didn't have a chance to compare audio as there was about 40 people in the store. None there for the Prime though. Again this was short and I was out of time. Just thought I'd share something since there's not much out there about Prime compared to the 10.1 than there is compared to the iPad2.

It's not really a fair fight to compare a second-gen tablet to the G-Tab. I'd hope that the Teg 3 (or any quad-core) would perform better. The real comparison for the Prime is to other newly announced second-gen tablets from Acer, Lenovo, and HTC. All of them have more RAM and a higher screen resolution than the Prime. From initial reviews a couple of negatives have surfaced - 1) the speakers are on the same side, mono, and easily covered by your hands, Wi-Fi only supports 2.4GHz, and some of the reviewers test units were faulty. QC was a big issue when the first Transformer was released and the Prime was rushed to market to be the first quad-core so build quality is something to watch. If someone has to have a Wi-Fi only tablet in the next couple of weeks than the Prime is the one to buy. It's more contemporary than anything else out right now. If you're looking at moving off of a G-Tab it makes more sense to wait until other next-gen tablets are released; especially because they'll be optimized for and have ICS pre-installed. I like the idea of a higher res screen, especially with ICS. If you want/need 3G then there's nothing out right now worth moving to. I like my Tab and personally am in no rush to replace it. I will however consider moving to a next-gen 3G Samsung tablet. Going forward I think there will be two categories of tablet: premium and value. The Prime is priced in the premium category but the specs of future tablets already exceed it. I think people rushing to replace existing tablets with the Prime will have regrets over the next few months.
---------- Post added at 07:41 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:25 PM ----------
Another thing... Does anyone else think that the Prime looks too "iPadish?" The front has the exact same design (or lack thereof) that got Samsung sued. I wonder if Asus is next or if Apple will wait to get some final rulings from their multiple Samsung lawsuits before going after them. I can't believe they'd ignore another "slavish copy."

Agreed with all the above. Not really looking to move off the 10.1. Just seeing what improvements the Prime brings and in my case the things I care about are just browsing and video playback\screen quality. I also agree the Prime is ipadish design wise. All the way to how the edges are slanted towards the front bezel.
Basically, for my needs, I'm sticking with my 10.1. But if I didn't have a tablet the Prime offers a lot at a $499 price point and is quite the improvement over the original Transformer. But QC is definitely a concern with Asus. That's the reason I bought a 10.1.

One good thing about owning any existing Samsung device is their experience with ICS. One of the benefits of being Google's launch vendor of choice for a new OS version is working directly with their engineers during the development. I'm sure when we get ICS that will make a big difference in how well it's implemented. Transformer owners give Asus props for updates but they're basically on their own for ICS which I imagine is a pretty steep learning curve when it comes to the non-cosmetic parts of the OS.

So did you feel that colors "pop" at all on the transformer prime? I really want to get this tablet but after having the xoom, I'm worried I will get another crap display. When I got my xoom, I compared it to an ipad 2 display and was shocked to see I preferred the ipad 2 display despite the higher resolution on the xoom. Anyway, I like colors to be vibrant and almost popping off the screen so I hope the prime can deliver. Your thoughts? Thanks man.

I think the Xoom has the most washed out display I've seen. The Prime's display is definitely better than the Xoom's, and better than the original Transformer's. I would say the warm tone on the Prime is the same as iPad 2's display. Compared to the 10.1 screen, colors seem bland though. Keep in mind I even had Voodoo Screen Tuning profile on my 10.1, which actually reduces the color a bit, and still the 10.1 was more vibrant vs the Prime's colors. But if you've never seen the colors on a 10.1 or held them side by side and you're coming from a Xoom, they'll definitely pop to you.
Question is now can your curious mind resist comparing the 2 screens side by side...

Damn, that is going to be hard to resist lol. I just don't want to be disappointed again. The screen was the main reason I ditched the xoom.. and I may get the prime as a gift, so idk what to do. I don't particularly like "bland," I had enough bland with the xoom ...oh well. Thanks for your input.

Thanks for nice comparision. Sad that you are not running 3.2 on your tab - its a bit smoother than 3.1 and browser is faster so then it would be even more interesting to compare.
But for now what I see - there is no point to move from gtab. Probably I would wait for next samsung tablet with full hd, and maybe even full hd amoled, who knows Also I'm really not sure if tegra is a chipset to look for, newly announced dual core samsung exynos at 2ghz probably will be way faster than tegra 3.
However, prime is a good choise for buying wi-fi tablet right now.

Yeah the only thing stopping me from updating to 3.2 is that when the original Transformer and the Xoom got their 3.2 udpate, it broke something to where the tablets wouldn't play 720p high profile videos anymore. And then over here a couple wifi 10.1 owners claimed the same, but interestingly the 3G 10.1 owners had the problem in 3.1 but when updating to 3.2 their high profile videos play smooth. So before I do any updating I wanted to be clear on the 720p wifi claimed issues.

Just ordered a tab 10 for the wife for xmas. Got it from woot for 320. Looked at the prime, and but it is already backordered on amazon and didn't get a chance to play with the prime. Was going to get the fire, but wife wanted a bigger, screened tablet.
Thanks for the review, guess I need to go to gamestop and check it out.

Technically the Prime is a third gen tablet. The first 7" galaxy tab would be the first gen.

[Review] Asus EEEPad Transformer VS Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

I have seen a few questions on this forum asking if they should get the TF or wait for something like the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Well, I made a video comparing the two tablets. Hopefully this will help people make a better informed decision. Check it out and let me know what you think. For those undecided, which are you going to get?

Good job!
I thought we couldn't over clock the transformer yet on 3.1 though, because the source wasn't available?
I think the image quality is much better on GT.
Again fantastic comparison. This is the comment I left on Youtube:
Thank you so much for this comparison, really help but still dont know which. Just going to wait to play with both in store before making up my mind. Would love the build and form of Galaxy with the abilities of the Transformer. Ahhhhh perfect world. Thanks again.
In the end, it's still HoneyComb - what you get is a different hardward, style design superior to Ipad2, thinner, sleeker, lighter than any tablet in the market now...but the same price Ipad2
Anyway, I almost pulled the trigger and but...wondering what I'm doing here, first Gtablet, sold it for losing $100 (to use for 2 months), now TF,,,I'm very pleased with TF and with GalaxyTab 10.1,,,what will I get? probably little different CPU, graphic, and weight, form design...TF serves me well for what I need to do while in my couch or on my bed!
I passed!
good luck everyone!
As a tablet there's not much between them, its the dock and the extra functionality you get with that ,which makes the TF stand out from any other android tablet, long form writting, extra storage, extra battery and use of usb devices are great but being able to charge my mobile from the dock wins it hands down for me
DESIRE HD using leedroid. ASUS TRANSFORMER using prime
If you want the #2 iPad on the market the Galaxy is your best bet. If you want the best Android tablet on the market then the Tranformer is it. Why? Android is about an alternative to iOS for those who want more functionality from their tablets. Looks like Samsung shot right at the iPad2 on specs, and aimed just slightly higher but not too far. Slightly thinner. Slightly larger battery. 3mp camera? Sounds like a spec picked just so in 6 months they can come out with a new model carrying a 5mp camera, then 6 months later an 8mp camera.
what is up with ASUS screen? it is supposed to be IPS superior to any other? I think they did something similar with color profiles on AMOLED screens to Tab too. as reviewer mentions, colors look more saturated. do you think ASUS would step up the competition, and change it in future updates to match color profiles of Samsung?

Who is to say that Samsung's saturated colors are "better?" Ideal would be an end-user control like the one you get on your TeeVee set, but generally, you want your display to represent some kind of baseline reality. Samsung picks a more vivid one. I guess it's up to the consumer to choose.

I hope not the Samsung is oversaturated. It is unnatural. Try displaying a persons picture on the screen

Well, apparently the 10.1 Galaxy Tab is using new SuperPLS screens which is a step above the IPS panels.
Although, until three days ago this was completely unknown to me as well. Nobody seems to be excited by this screen, Samsung isn't even making a big deal out of it. I don't get it, the SuperAMOLED screens on the Galaxy S phones of last year were such a big part of the phone's marketing, but nobody mentions the Tab's screen.
But I agree with others, if SuperPLS is as saturated as Sammie's SuperAMOLED panels then I'm not sure I'd want one. The Galaxy S phones look amazing when your first pick them up but I actually dislike the overly saturated colours, it seems unnatural and hurts my eyes almost.
sometimes the over saturation is a good thing. but i guess it just depends on the consumer as someone stated. i remember that on the nexus a dev was able to build an app that adjusted the colors of the screen. maybe if there was something like that for the TF then we could tweak it a little. overall im pleased with the screen, you only see a difference when you put it right next to the galaxy tab. but on its own, it looks great.
Thanks for the compare, although I think to be relevant to most here, the Samsung needs to be updated to 3.1, as that's on the retail product. An updated compare would be helpful.
Also on many people's mind is the Tegra 2's lackluster performance on high profile 720p MKVs. Samsung has traditionally had strong multimedia support, as to wit its 5" PMPs as well as the 7" GalTab. I'm curious if Samsung has added native support for MKV for the native player, or is it still limited to only MP4 support. Again, a compare with a retail 3.1 version would be appreciated.
Meh the screen isn't that big of a deal. The only thing the Tab has going for itself is its size. But I need a MicroSD so I went with the TF.
Nice comparison

I hope Asus never gives us the Vivid mode on the 10.1. I prefer the colors on the TF. Its like the TVs at Best Buys where all are in Vivid mode aka cartoon mode.....Nasty
I think the screen on the Transformer looks pretty washed out. At least next to the 10.1. I will be returning my TF for it. The TF is an awesome tablet but I like the idea of a lighter and thinner tablet. Will I miss the SD card slot? Actually, no. I took my 16GB out of the TF a couple days ago for some reason and have yet to need it. The remote desktop client has been more than helpful for when I want to watch a movie or netflix.
A few other reasons for me choosing the 10.1 are the fact that I can purchase an adapter today to use for microSD, HDMI, and USB. The USB adapter is most important as I already have a beautiful Acer Timeline 13.3 laptop. With the TF, I couldn't get a USB port without turning it into a laptop. One other reason off the top of my head is the fact that I will be able to USB charge it from my computer while I use it. This was a big let down for me when using the TF.
It may sound like I'm bashing the TF pretty hard right now, but I really do like it and for the price, it still can't be beat.
The thing about the GT is it's just another Android tablet, minus sd card slot, minus USB ports, minus full keyboard functionality.
The only plus it had is added saturation, but that's like adding saturation to a good photo just because you want to change it, not because it needs it.
All this and minus $100/£100 in you wallet.
I don't know why people would even consider one over a Transformer

Is that really a fair comparison?
The Transformer doesn't have a full SD slot or keyboard unless you pay an additional $150 for the dock, which will transform your Transformer into a thicker, heavier and decidedly un-tablet like device.
People need to dial down their fanboy tendencies up in here, seriously.
it's fair comparison and that's why the name is Transformer, but ppl are given choice not to unleash the 'beast'

Any regrets buying the note instead of the infinity?

To all that purchased the note , any regrets that you should have bought the infinity tf700 instead having a 1900x1280 resolution with a super ips plus screen?

I'm sitting here looking at both side by side on my desk. It's really a tough decision which to keep. The Note is really fast and love the pen features - but the plastic back does make it feel a little cheap. The screen resolution on the infinity is truly beautiful, and when it's in the dock, it feels extremely well built. My Infinity does have the usual light bleed along the bottom and right side, the Note has none.
What to do. I have some time to figure this out, but it's going to be difficult as both have their features and faults.
HELLL no! i just returned my infinity and bought the note and its awesome. Sure it doesn't have a high res screen but the screen it has is great. No hiccups so far, its very fast and it doesnt have the i\o issues like asus had. sound is great and plenty loud. touch is very responsive and the s pen works as advertised. I dont mind the plastic either , its pretty sturdy for the build. and the lcd is flush not separating like on my infinity in certain spots lol. It takes a bit for it to charge but it also takes longer for it to depleat. i was on it for a solid 2 hours yesterday just playing with everything and it only went down to 80%, my infinity gave me about 4 hours until it was dead. Screen is way bright enough, i have mine set at about 30% and that is plenty for around the house. Asus really needs to step it up for me to consider thier tablets again, way to many issues. Sure your getting more for your money but if its not quality and doesnt work well does it really matter? Hope this helps :good:

Perhaps this may be too early to say, but i own(ed) infinity for almost a month. I didnt care about spen, split screen but wanted to have as smooth experience of android os as possible. In fact of all key features, I care hd resolution the most, but none the less I picked up galaxy note. So far I am seriously impressed the smoothness and even stability of this device. I have yet to encounter any ANR. The file i couldnt open on mantano readeras it took forever, and thought it originally was due to app itself opens fine on note.
Some major benchmark issue on infinity was io, which got better but never the phone level. So of course i tested on note with rl benchmark. It is a wopping 20s whereas, infinty gets me 80s at the best.
Will give more detailed impression. But for now if you can give up hd, hands down note.
It's a simple choice actually. You want a media toy, get the Infinity. You want a tablet tool, get the Note.
The screen res on the Note won't set any records but it is acceptable. I am guessing they did that because of the pen. A high density screen may have caused screen lag when writing with the pen.
Also remember that we have barely scratched the surface on what they can do with the s-pen. Developers will be creating lots of apps for us. needless to say if you want to do any note taking, the Note is the obvious choice.
Too many issues with the 2 Infinitys I had. I am more than happy with my note.

Ditto, this thing rocks. The Note wins, no contest.
I would just return the Note. I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and we'll be lucky if we even get official Jelly Bean. ICS took months to come (beginning of August). ASUS, however do update there devices in rapid speed (Some ASUS devices are getting Jelly Bean today).
Function > Form = No regrets. Note 10.1 all day long.
Just swapped my Infinity yesterday for the note. I couldn't put it down! everything is so smooth. like a quad core device should be. Plus the added functionality of thepen is exquisite. As far as the screen goes, I can say that the Note's screen is by no means ugly, perhaps just not as crisp in some places. but I'll take overall stability over that in a heartbeat.
I've never owned the Infinity and I never will after my horrible experience with Asus, ICS, and the original Transformer. I've been waiting all year practically for the Note 10.1 to arrive, and I couldn't be happier with it. The screen resolution is perfectly acceptable to me, as I bought this device for gaming, surfing and for use as a design tool (s-pen). IMHO, Samsung may not push many updates for their devices, but I'd rather have a device that works than one that is buggy, barely runs the apps it should run easily, and has poor build quality (case creaks, screen light bleed, etc) but receives updates every other month.

They said jb will be out by this year. The transformer line is betting on jb to fix everything, while the note is already great and perfect on ics. What more can jb do for it? Besides make it faster than the already fastest android tablet alive, galaxy note 10.1!
I scanned through the TF300 forum after i saw they were getting JB (only cause I considered this one before I got my TF700), and the few posts I read stated it was under whelming update.
Those could have been picky users though, but I was getting ready to read through some more to see if any issues are fixed for them.
I am interested to see if JB helps the 700 at all though.

Opinions moving from iPad to SGN 10.1?

So I currently own:
iPad 2- love the fact its so fluid
G-Note 5.3- Slow and I find the s-pen is not accurate off by 1/8 on an inch but loved the idea.
SGIII- Traded my Note for a SGIII and love the speed.

As you can see I WANT an Android tablet but frankly they just have been as fluid as IOS. So anyone coming from the iPad to the Note 10.1. Since I never had the retina display I think I can safely give it up but I want fluid. And I want the S-pen but I want it accurate and responsive like paper.
So thoughts and opinions.
Just go down to your local brick and mortar and play with one for an hour and decide for yourself. Or, if you're incapable of deciding for yourself then head down to the Apple retail store and the geniuses will happily tell you what to buy.
S Pen is very accurate (I haven't seen anyone complain about it being off a little) and very responsive.
It's as not fluid as an iPad, but should be fluid enough. I actually returned Asus Transformer Infinity before buying this one, and I can say that Note 10.1 is ten time more fluid than Transformer Infinity. It addition, with Jelly Bean (with Project Butter) update coming within this year it will be much better. I don't think you will feel like you need Jelly Bean though because it already works smoothly as is.
Coming from iPad 2, the screen will look amazing with higher resolution. However, if fluidity is your priority, iPad is probably the best choice. But I have a feeling that you will be happy with this device.
My wife was fed up with her iPad 2 (it was free, though, a business gift) . When I had my SGN10.1 she played around with it for 1hr , got in her car and went to buy her own SGN10.1 ....... :good:

iPad 2- love the fact its so fluid
G-Note 5.3- Slow and I find the s-pen is not accurate off by 1/8 on an inch but loved the idea.
SGIII- Traded my Note for a SGIII and love the speed.

Gingerbread??? Tab 10.1 was Honeycomb... That said it had a Tegra2, Tegras are notorious for being first on the market to bump up core count but horrendously poor performance per core, and oddly, some of the worst GPU performance which is odd considering that NVidia is a GPU company.
If you're happy with the I9300, you should be happy with the N80xx - Same resolution and exact same CPU/GPU.
In addition, once Jellybean hits, UI performance should be significantly improved... Assuming Samsung doesn't dork it up. Might want to look at how the I9300 Jellybean leak is performing.
Thank you all for the replies. And I stand corrected the original 10.1 was Honeycomb. I guess I will make the trip and give one a shot.

This is not a hard choice. The iPad is a very different device if your into pen. If the question is about the pen being solid, it's solid.
Feel secure that your getting good pen from this.
I came from the iPad. I've been trying to switch to Android for over a year. Of the half dozen Android tablets I've tried, the Note 10.1 is my switching device. Don't get me wrong, I'm keeping the iPad mostly because my daughter uses it for some games and secondly because there are some games I like that Android doesn't have (Kingdom Rush!).
So yeah, my retina iPad has been reduced to sloppy seconds.

I just sold my (New) iPad and i want to switch to an Android tab, what i don't like about the Note 10.1 is the low resolution it dould of made my choice easier if it had a full HD screen, now i'm torn between the Infinity and the Note 10.1 is de res really bad on the Note in comparision with the Infinity or New iPad?

I don't notice the reduced resolution at all - and as others have pointed out, excessive resolution causes problems. UI performance on Infinity, battery performance (the new iPad requires around 50% more battery capacity to achieve the same runtime) for iPad. This means the new iPad takes longer to charge and is heavier.
iPad and Infinity - making compromises for spec epeen and marketing
Note 10.1 - proper systems engineering, acknowledging that the benefits of a higher resolution display beyond 1280x800 (or was it 720?) are far less than the costs (need for much higher GPU fill rates, which means either worse framerates or more battery consumption).
I had the iPad1 the day it came out, and the iPad2 when it came out. The only reason I bought either tablet was that I wanted to use it for taking notes (without needing pen and paper) and reading PDF's (in a more natural way than on a laptop), and they only did one of those things. I sold my iPad2 a few months ago, and have just now picked up the Note 10.1. Me like!
The build quality is a little lower than I've been used to with the iPad, but feels acceptable in the hand.
The note-taking software is a little rough around the edges, as if Samsung doesn't realize they can tap into a HUGE education market with it.
In terms of taking notes in class, it's everything I ever hoped for -- the digitizer is very accurate, super rarely messes up.
Lack of high-res screen is disappointing, but it still looks a lot better than my iPad ever did!
The whole point of the Note 10.1 is taking notes and drawing. Hopefully Samsung will realize this at some point and polish up the rough edges and market it for education, ie. taking notes in class, but 'til then it's a fine tablet as is.

Thanks for your reply, i will try to go to the store this week and test both of them and i will leave with one of them.
From what i have read, i think these are the main differences between the two.
Note 10.1
Likes- DAC, Speakers orientation, CPU/GPU/RAM, Design, S-Pen.
Dislikes- Screen resolution (I will try this at the store with websites and videos)
TF700 Infinity
Likes- Full HD res, Tegra 3 Gaming, Design, Dock, Stock Android.
Dislikes- Laggy performance/ I/O performance, Not so loud mono speaker with bad orientation, Build quality issues.

With regards to the Screen resolution, I am very happy with it, maybe there are only a few users who genuinely dislike the display and others are just repeating what they have heard from other reviews.
Not sure if you will be fully able to test both machines in store for finding defects etc unless they are blatantly obvious as I have been using an Asus TF101 prior to the note and the defects usually show days/months later on the machines. I had to RMA my Asus once during its warranty period but I collected the faults over time and had them repaired in one visit, one speaker stopped working, battery drained very quickly and when it stopped charging I had to send it back.
I have not owned a Samsung tablet but have owned a few of their phones and currently own the phone version of the Note which I also love however it has not always been good. Previously owned their first galaxy S phone and had nothing but problems with it and the GPS issue was never really resolved on the phone which was poor even after updates. Samsung tend to release too many products too soon after the launch of a new product making the previous model obsolete and support/updates used to be very slow. Based on the above issues I moved back to HTC phones and am back now again to Samsung but this time it seems that they are focusing on quality and their latest product, the Note 10.1 really does seem to tick all the right boxes for for now....

I know some people yell about specs that they only heard about without knowing what it adds, but it is not in my case, i usually browse a lot and i also hate seeing big pixels like for example on the iPad 2, this is what i liked about the New iPad the browsing experience was quitte good (with Chrome) and i could not see any pixels in normal use. That is why it will be the most important for me on a tablet.
I've had a lot of experience with Samsung and HTC in the past and it was the same as you HTC was a master, but if the Note 10.1 resembles the S3 that i own now than it will be the tab to beat. Samsung improved a lot since the Galaxy S in terms of software implementation and support at least this is what i experience now on my S3.
The only time you will notice the resolution difference with the Note is if you are trying to read really tiny text. Othewise this screen looks totally amazing.
That being said it all comes down to the s-pen. If you want a pen get the Note, if not get the ipad.
Sent from my awesome Note 10.1

Just picked one up.

So far, quite nice. Its definitely nicer tham the N7. It matches my GNote 2 quite nicely. I hope Seido comes out with a case for it. The case at Best Buy was too pricey and not what I really wanted. $49, a bit steep for a note book cover.
I think my N7 has seen the lasts of its days, but only if I can convince wifey to let me keep this.
Just wanted to say hello and share my initial experiences. Its very comfortable to hold.

I love the feel of it in the hand, I think the weight is about perfect for a device like this. It's pretty nice using it as a notepad with how good the SPen works too.
That said, I think the placement of the capacitive buttons feels way off. In portrait which seems like the desired orientation the buttons feel too pushed in toward the center to reach naturally. It feels nothing like my note 2 in that respect. I think it's to avoid the problem you have in landscape where the buttons are easy to hit. Either way feels off, and there should be an option to turn them off. However, being able to press them with the stylus is long overdue, the phone should have that tech.
Best thing about this tablet is how good it gets SPen usage, it's the best most useable version Samsung's made in my opinion. If you mainly take handwritten notes, this is the best tablet I've tried.
Worst thing is screen resolution. If you're used to nice, high pixel density screens this is a major downgrade. It looks as bad as the iPad mini to me despite having better ppi. I looked at it in the store trying to judge this very thing, but once I got it home and started reading on it the text blur immediately started to bother me. I'm a heavy reader and this part is bumming me out. The reading mode just adds a sort of sepia tint to the page to reduce glare it can't magically make the text crisper.
I haven't tried much reading, I plan on using it more for work. I probably could have used the Nexus 7, but, I love the Note products that line.

Had one since yesterday and it's very nice. Coming from a Nexus 7 and a Note 10.1. This is my favourite things about each combined into the one package. I get the nice portable size of the N7, combined with the multi window and s-pen of the note 10.1. the 10.1 was just too bulky for me and it's been collecting dust ever since I got the Note 2.
The screen resolution hasn't really phased me, I guess coming from the 10.1 has helped a lot in those regards. While things look fuzzy on that thing this looks nice and sharp in comparison.
I'm not sure if I'm imagining it but the software seems a bit more optimised on this one too. There was a slight lag on the 10.1 but this is every bit as buttery smooth as the experience on my Note 2. Good work Samsung, getting better all the time.

In some of the online reviews I read, they mentioned that the N8 felt a lot smoother then the 10.1. It does seem they tweaked the software for better performance (as well as having some software features and customer gripes on the 10.1 apparently corrected). And some of it may be due to the slightly better CPU.
Picked one up yesterday to replace my N7 as well. This thing is as fast as my laptop, browsing is buttery smooth and pages load extremely quick. IT feels a lot lighter and thinner than the N7 and definitely a huge step up in perf.
While the DPI/res of the screen is OK, the colors and black level are superior to the N7. Videos look fantastic. And finally I get more storage with a SD card slot.
Grabbed one too. After putting up with the ridiculous lag on an ASUS TF700 it's a joy to use the Note 8 just for its response time and buttery smoothness. Already rooted mine.
Also found a cheap case on Amazon that appears to support the on/off function -- screen goes off when I close it, comes back on when I open it up.

Got mine today. Also came from N7. It's much snappier and the screen is lovely!
The pen is great too!

Exact same for me. Just sold my Note 10.1 today...luckily for the same price I bought it for! So that's a win. LOL Like you...also had the Nexus 7 and so far this seems to be the best of both worlds.

Well, the processor is a bit faster and might have better architecture (not my area to really say) which might be a little of what you're experiencing. I also noticed when my Note 10.1 started to fill up...had about 2gb left of free space on internal storage...it was starting to get little lag spikes as well. We'll see if the 8.0 has that issues since I plan to install the same apps!
I agree, also got one this week and was pleasantly surprised, way better than I expected - best Samsung tablet I've ever used.
I've had mine for a few days now. Coming from every tab you can think of (I'm a bit of an android junky and write for an android site ). Most recently the Nexus 10 and 7.
A few pros - Snappy tablet, s pen works well, nice size, decent battery life, attractive looking tablet and the cameras are fine.
A few cons - Screen is very grainy (look at your notifications in the top left before you pull down the notification bar and your app icons), menu and back buttons are poorly placed (Samsung should have went with on screen for this size. I hit the back and menu buttons way to much in landscape), of course the cheap plastic feel and finally the price tag ($427 is pretty steep for a 16 gig).
These are just a few pros and cons (quickly written on a CIG break at work). I love the tablet, but my two big gripes are the screen and the price tag. Other than that I recommend this tablet to anyone seeking a tablet this size. Now let's hope this tab gets a lot of dev love (that brings me back to the price tag).
Edit. My beef with the screen is most likely because I'm coming from a Nexus 10 (best tablet screen I've ever seen) and a DNA (best phone screen I've ever seen). The screen on the Note 8.0 is fine.... just very grainy coming from those devices.

A review from a former Asus Transformer Pad TF300T user

Recently, I sent my TF300T in for an RMA (after to owning it for 4 months) for it to come back in a worse condition with the plastic case popping out, glass not bonded properly, scratches and a badly scuffed charger/adaptor. I live in the UK and it was the retailer's responsibility to fix the tablet, so when it came back with problems I was offered a replacement or a different tablet of my choice. I chose the Note 10.1. I've had the tablet for around 3 days.
Display
The Note 10.1s display is better than the TF300s. On the Asus Transformer Pad the whites appeared yellow and I had light bleed along the right side of the screen. My Note only has a small amount of bleed along the right side which is only really noticeable in a dark room. Banding was also an issue on the TF300 due to the use of a cheap screen. This doesn't seem to be apparent on the Note 10.1...
Performance
The TF300T suffers constant lags due to the use of cheap NAND flash memory, this caused the browser to repeatedly suffer 'Force close' messages, this doesn't seem to happen on the Note :good:. Running Androbench my Note 10.1 also beats the TF300T.
The processor bests the Tegra 3 found in the TF300T. The extra 1GB of RAM also helps :highfive:
Build Quality
The reviews I read criticised the Note for poor build quality and that it feels 'cheap'. Personally, I think it feels more high end than the TF300T as there appears to be no creaking, unlike my TF300 (which the back felt soft and the left side of the bezel creaked).
Other points
The S-Pen is also intuitive and is a useful addition. Android 4.1 on the Note 10.1 also mostly feels smooth.
Looks like I'm a happy owner
Glad to hear you like your new Note 10.1.
I love mine. I use it for work, play, reading, etc. I barely touch my laptop anymore.

i'm also comes from tf300t too. Tf300t only good with hdmi port, keyboard dock and software update really fast. The rest ( performance, battery, screen...) are really sucks though.
hi
my previous android tab was a very low end micromax funbook i think it is called allwinner(not even worth comparing it to this) internationally and when i saw this tab when my nice came here for her holidays it blew me away and i just wanted it got it and im loving it The Spen is nice im just getting the feel of it and getting to understand on the same
i just love this Tab it great way beyond my budget but thanks to samsung having an offer on CC were u dont need to pay any precessing or interest on buying it i got it :good::good::laugh:

Me too.
To OP, I agree totally. I recently had the chance to play with my moms TF300, and must say, my GN10.1 is a much nicer experience. Hers kept hanging up and force closing things. She had wanted me to root it so I could remove bloat and try to help it run faster, but I was unable to since reading up and seeing the complex process needed to do so. I was 800 miles away from my fast wifi and laptop and she only had dial up available to me. I was unable to help it and I think it is worse now with 4.1.2 on it from what she says.
i'm also coming from a TF300T and noticed a big difference with the Note.
The whole user experience (even if you don't use the S-pen) is much better, much more stable, smooth and faster overall.
I don't use the s-pen tho, it looks interesting but i mostly use the note on some surface (table, lap, etc) and it's not pratical to use it that way with the pen, i don't miss the s-pen either so may next tablet will probably not be a note, but right now the note is still worth it anyway for the general performance and smoothness, i think it's still the most smooth 10" tablet available.
For me the only drawback is the resolution, although perfectly sufficient it would be nice to have a higher resolution.
Former TF300T user here, too. Tablets perform like night & day. I was fed up with all the stutters on the TF300T. Yes, I DO miss the hdmi out, but the performance & benefits of the Note ae much greater. Plus, I have the Note 2, so I can sync s-notes between them both.
I came from the original Transformer, actually, but I think it's tough to compare the 300T, a budget model, with the Note, the flagship tablet of Samsung..
In any case, I loved the color and look of my Transformer, but I also love the color and look of my Note. I just wish the Note had a keyboard dock as well. That would make my Note completely irreplaceable.
I came from the TF700 and don't miss the overheating slow as molasses tablet at all. ASUS can go to hell.
