Newton ring issue still around? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

Hey guys, thinking of getting a galaxy 10.1 and just wondering if anyone who has recently bought a tab (1-2 months ago) has the infamous oil slick problem. If quite a few do i may consider the 8.9
Thanks
Adam
------—------------—
this is sent from my galaxy s2 to u, as a gift, because I love you. no joke <3

Got the problem, talked to samsung, they fixed the screen. Took a week. Get th 10.1.

had my 10.1 for a month now and no problems

got the rings but samsung fixed it, no questions asked. took about a week and a half. Only problem is that they switched the screen out with one that says "samsung" at the bottom. Not a big deal. By far still the best tablet on the market.

I got a 3G Tab in the UK this month. It was built in October. The screen is different than the U.S. Wi-Fi Tab it replaced. There's a texture underneath the glass and the glass seems thicker. The contrast is better too. So newer Tabs should have the improved screen. If you want a unit out of a fresh batch, try Costco. They were out of stock and just got them back in about three weeks ago.

bought my wife the tab 10.1 about 3 weeks ago.. it is a 3G+wifi B8 (august build).. i can definitely see the texture under direct light but i cant compare it to the earlier screen as i have not seen any before. So far no issue at all.

had mine for months now.. they have fixed the issue.. even if its not, u will get yr replacement anyway..

I got mine in October, and I had no issue at all.
I'm not sure when it was built, but I have the 'Samsung' text at the bottom of my screen.

Bought mine near the end of October and nothing on mine either. I've also got the "Samsung" logo beneath the screen for what its worth...

I have the Samsung logo on the screen but I have the problem. Not sent it back yet. Bought the tab in the UK from Vodafone in September. Only noticed the problem a few weeks ago. Doesn't always show straight away. Sometimes exasperated by tight cases?

Got my Verizon version in late August. Rings showed up in a couple of weeks after being stored in a tight sleeve case intended for Verizon's Xoom. I'm inclined to believe its more a stress issue than anything else as upon placing the tab down on a flat surface and applying pressure in various spots along the front face the rings went away. Changing how the tab was placed in the case solved it for me and the rings rarely come back (unless I carry it in such a way as to apply too much pressure to the front center of the screen during transport).
Have recently changed cases to a looser one and I'm not the least bit worried about the rings now.

right, cool, i think i may get the tab 10.1 now. May buy one second hand though, anyone in the uk know CEX?

The Samsung logo means nothing. There are older screens that have the logo and newer screens that don't. Whether the logo is present or not is driven by market and, if repaired, what's available in the service center.

Guys, forgive my ignorance, I'm probably missing the obvious, but how I can know the date when my GT was built?
Thanks,
ace.

For anyone who sent your Tab in for repair, was it rooted and if so did you unroot before sending it in?

Just to play it safe I unrooted and flashed back to stock 3.2. Just dropped my tab off today, hopefully I'll have it back soon but unfortunately I am on a business trip for the next three weeks and they are going to ship it back to my house

Yes unroot and restore stock ROM before sending it in. That's what I did.

Bought a used Galaxy Tab. Dead pixels on screen...

Recently, I bought a used Verizon galaxy tab on ebay. I haven't gotten a chance to activate it but I've been using it for a couple of days and just noticed today there is something wrong with the screen on the upper left hand corner. It's really noticeable when the screen is black. It's some kind of dead pixel spot thing... The person said it was only a month old so I assume it is still under warranty. Can I take it somewhere to get a new one or get it fixed since it's obviously a hardware defect?
Check to see if the seller registered it. If he did, you will not be able to transfer the warranty. Might want to think about returning it... If the dead pixels were not mentioned in the auction notes, he'll Have to refund.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
How do you register it? The guy that sold it to me was very nice and I'd rather not have to return it.
Head to Samsung website...also, maybe ask the seller for original receipt. If it's around a month old, you might be able to talk Samsung into an exchange for having a defective unit. (unit...hehe )
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/account/regist
Thanks again for the info. The person hadn't registered it yet so I was able to register it and send it in for repair. Turns out it wasn't a cluster of dead pixels but instead a bleeding screen. Still waiting for it to come back. Does anyone whether they send a new one or do they just fix the old one?
Most times they try and repair the damaged / defective model. If it can't be repaired, they will replace it. Seems you might have lucked out in buying this used one. Prolly gonna end up with a brand spankin new Tab for cheap! Keep me posted, am curious to see what they do.
Sent it in a week and a half ago and am still waiting for it to come back. They received it last Thursday so I hope it comes back soon. I'll update the thread once it arrives. Has anyone else ever sent anything to Samsung for repair?

Yep. I sent in my Tab because it wouldn't wipe/reset properly. It took 4 days to get there, and then 8 days for it to ship back to me. Another 3 days to get it back. They covered everything (including the lousy ground shipping, Ugh) and it appears to work great; even a bit faster than before.

Awesome! Samsung just shipped it back today so it should be here in a few days. Can't wait! I wonder if it will be the same one I sent in or if it will be a new/refurbished one. I'll let you guys know when it arrives.
Got the Tab back a couple days ago. They sent me back the same one but they replaced the screen. The process took a while but I'm pleased with the outcome. Thanks for all the help guys!

Limited Edition 10.1 Glass Separation - What to do?

Hello all. I guess by now you have heard of the glass separation issue with the I/O Limited 10.1 Galaxy Tab?
If not, see hxxp://androidcommunity.com/displays-breaking-on-galaxy-tab-10-1-google-io-limited-edition-20110527/
I was just wondering if others have experienced this yet and what can be done about it?
The upper right corner is the only concern I have on my unit. It is not that bad now, but what about a month from now. Can I glue it myself?
Your thoughts? Thank you all.
I got the same issue. I am about to call Samsung support about it.

Can you post your results with Samsung?
Thank you
Mine was separating pretty badly on the top left and right corners. I called Samsung on the number on the bottom of the tablet; they opened a repair ticket and emailed me a UPS prepaid label to send it back.
A week later UPS delivered a replacement unit. One corner is ever so slightly not flush but it's nowhere near as bad as it was and I'm just going to live with that.
Did you get back an IO tab?
Uplinked through my mind
I'm so glad this thread is here. I didn't even know this was an issue/problem. My only concern is will Samsung send me a replacement while I'm working and living overseas in China? Moving in 3 weeks.

Was it again an i/o special edition?
Yes, it was an I/O model. Came in the exact same packaging and everything, just like when I pickd up the first one at I/O.
Has this issue gotten worse for those who have it? I recently purchased a 'used' IO Tab from someone and when I got it I specifically checked for screen separation and noticed none.
Only a few hours into using it I noticed the bend above the port to charge the device. Now I have to make a concious effort not to hold it on that side.
So, did it only get worse, or should I be through the worst at this point and it'll just be a little 'off' from now on out?
I also had that problem, i called them 2 weeks ago and they helped me get a replacement unit, which just arrived yesterday. But the replacement has the screen coming out of the body of the unit worse than the one i sent in. I think it just has a deep manufacturing flaw. Im not even gonna bother sending it in again. a 2 week wait without the tablet just to get another with the same problem... It works fine either way so might just be worth it to hold onto it.

Well that sucks. I wonder if it's only present in the IO Limited Editions (haven't noticed any complaints from the NYC purchasers). I guess we'll find out in a matter of days.
Retail tab owner here
I bought mine in union square, and I have been monitoring a possible glass separation very carefully. I am happy to report my tab has so far been unaffected by this issue..
Keep in mind all that the Google I/O tabs where all hand made vs the ones being sold now. From my understanding they are fixing the issues. I got my labels just Friday because I got busy. Should be sending mine out tomorrow. Will give you all update on what happens.

I'm UK based.*
I called the number on the back of the tab and at first the guy told me that I couldn't get it shipped back to the UK. I asked him to double check and he came back and said that in fact they could send it back to me.*
I gave him my address and all the information and he repeated it back to me and said to wait for the ticket email to confirm.*
When I got the email it didn't have the right address - it obviously was not liked by their system as the road address and town where right but the state was Texas!*
I am also not clear on if I am meant to ship it to them or they are going to pick it up.*
I will call them back shortly and try to sort out the address and clarify but has anyone else spoken to anyone in support about an international return and repair? And if anyone had a direct email for someone at samsung support so I can send them my address in typed form that would be really helpful! Thanks.*
So I called Samsung back and they pushed through the shipping for me.
It turns out their system does have the correct address but the email sent out wasn't formatted for international addresses so that is why it was messed up.
I have scheduled my UPS delivery for Friday (tomorrow)... I didn't include the original box - I wrapped the galaxy tab in lots and lots of bubble wrap and put it in another box as I wanted to keep the original box if I ever decide to resell it in the future and I wasn't sure if I would get the box back.
I just hope that I don't get another new tab back which has the same fault - but I can't complain about Samsung's customer service. They were very very helpful and very very fast! I mean they are paying for international shipping to the US and back again so I am happy

I had the screen separation problem as well. I called up Samsung and after numerous calls I was able to ship mine to Samsung and have it replaced. I just received the tablet yesterday and it came with a completely different build than the one I received at Google IO. One difference was that I didn't have the option to select the stock Android wallpapers like I had with my previous unit. The only option I had for wallpapers were ones that Samsung provided. The build didn't seem as "buggy" as the one I got at Google IO but it's a little disconcerting that there are so many builds of 3.0.1 for the same device from the same manufacturer. Also I swear the device seems thicker than the one I got at Google IO. I'll need to compare it with my friend's iPad 2 to be sure.

UK Samsung Service Centres for fixing Newton Rings issue

Hi all
I just want to get a rough estimate of number of who has sent thier galaxy tab to a UK based service centre when they bought thier tab in the UK to fix the newton ring issue.
My questions are:
Did they fix it?
How long did it take?
Which Service Centre?
This is just to see how many tabs were fixed by service centres and to see if they have the equipment/ software to do it
I have sent my to A Nova Norwich on the 18th Augest. Been calling every week First they said they don't have the equipment to do it, waiting for MPI. Now they saying they are waiting for software to do it.
Regards
Mine has been gone a week and I already miss the bugger. At work it takes me twice as long to do things and I need it back asap. Told them this on the phone yesterday and they said they will call them and hopefully get it sent out via Currier. If they play up with this I will demand a refund and get a Sony tablet S.
I returned mine to Currys yesterday for this exact reason.
The woman in the store said they have had 2 other returns and both of their in store displays have the same issue.
Thinking about getting an Archos G9 8.0in.
1.5Ghz Texas Instruments CPU which aparantly Google has already given the green light for Ice Cream Sandwich, expandable memory, standard ports.
Ok, it's a bit thicker than the Samsung but it could be a decent little tab?
Going to wait and see it in the flesh and read some reviews though.

Hi all
So it's been more than 28 days and still no fix from service centre. I called Samsung and they offered a Replacement but it's going to take 28 days!!! Any one else managed to get their fixed by a service centre?
I have just had an update. My repair case was closed with the status, closed none defect.
When i called up they said it was an error on my part. Brilliant!!!
I also had that problem. They closed it saying its not a defect. they had it for 1 week and then it was closed. So far I dont think any where in the UK a service centre has actually fixed a samsung galaxy tab

So did you get it back with the same default? I'm currently pestering their Facebook page, complaints department etc. If you don't mind me asking what did you do in the end?
Liam
EDIT: sorry i just saw your post above mine. Did you accept the replacement and how did they manage to get them to give you one?
Yes i accepted the replacement but have not received it. going to take 28 days. also they mentioned there is no way of tracking the exchange progress.
I called samsung customer services to chase up daily/weekly and they mentioned if after 28 days the tab was not fixed by the service centre they will offer a exchange. I suggest you call up samsung and make sure the service centre doesnt send you back the tab unless its fixed. otherwise you have to send it back again. while on the phone with samsung get them to give you the number for the service centre so you can call them directly to find out whats happening
Andy
My mate had the newton rings, took it back to PC World where he bought it, they gave him a new one there and then.
He's had the new one since the end of last week and the same thing's happened.
Result. After a bit of moaning they have agreed to replace it. However it will take up to 28 days BO!
Well thats sort of good news. Just need to wait now...
Still no reports of UK service centre fixing galaxy tabs
Just recieved my exchanged samsung galaxy tab. no issue so far.

Dude can you keep us posted whether it stays that way - ie no rings or streaks appearing after a certain period of time etc.
It may be they have fixed the issue permanently and you got one of the fixed units, as opposed to getting a replacement unit from the same batch as all the others with this problem, and that have the same problem either upon receiving the replacement or up to a week or so after getting it...
I just want to know because if they have finally really fixed it then I will take mine in to have the screen replaced under warranty (although I would prefer a completely new unit)
They send me a new unit. Box was unopened. so far no issue only get it when pressing hard. even when i press hard the oil slick shows very very faintly hardly noticable and disappears when you stop pressing.
Im just about to send my 10.1 back to the UK centre. It has about a 2.5" newton ring oil slick in the middle of the screen, but even worse after about an hour of use the screen display starts to corrupt. A lot of the whites start getting flickering pink lines across it and colours bleed into others. Putting it into standby for a while fixes it for a bit, but extended use causes the issue again
How did you guys send yours back? In the original box?
I sent mine with orginal box. without cables and charger etc. when they sent me a new one it came with these aswell so i got spare cable and charger
I haven't sent mine back but it has now seemed to resolve itself, haven't had rings for a week now. Last time I got them it was while the tab was on charge and I was watching 2 episodes of the gadget show !
I received my replacement tab on Friday. Originally I wasn't happy as I had a white one and they sebt a black one. However ot turns out they sent me the "soft black" one and I love it. It feels like a much better build quality.
I sent mine back on its own and i received a newly boxed one; so i now have double accesories.
Look at S/N... RxxBy.....

At this time I thought this was corrected.. I am quite Annoyed when picking up on my right hand. Its on the right at the back when facing screen.
Anyone gets really solid and not crreaking? I want to return and get another one. But if all N10 is doing like this I might keep it this way.

I can confirm that mine does not creak. Bought it somewhere around launch from Play Store.

Looks good to me

Half my screen is frozen sometimes.

To describe this as thoroughly as possible, if my phone is awake and I am using it and this happens, it will freeze whatever I am looking at but only the right side. If the phone is asleep and this happens when I wake it, the right half will be random colored lines and dots, like how televisions fuzz out on a channel you don't get. Pressing against the screen fixes it and it will function normal after that. Also I retain full touch control on that side during the problem. I would take a picture but it happens randomly and the note 4 is my only camera haha.
Any idea what causes this? I really don't want to pay 100 bucks to TMO to replace it, but I will if that is the only option. It is incredibly annoying. Thank you.
My Note 4 has just started to do this today. I made a post about it on reddit and took some pictures. Hopefully this gets bumped so we can get this figured out.

Wooooow
....That second image is my note 4 all over.
Half the screen goes haywire while the left side is frozen. I am unable to do anything to it at this point, and after holding several buttons...the screen goes black...still not able to do anything, and all of a sudden it restarts itself. Sometimes that fixes it for a few seconds. other times I have to remove the battery, wait a few seconds then it's alright for another few minutes. It happens no matter what I'm doing: watching a video, playing a game, answering a call, reading a text, responding to a text, or browsing the internet.
What I ended up doing was opening up the device and fiddling with the cables and connections.
Turns out there's a loose fitting connection in there that I couldn't seem to fit correctly back where it's supposed to go. Maybe there was an error in production and the parts do not fit together. Inside, there are two separate connections that connect the display to the motherboard. If both connections are not secure at the same time, it will simply not work. In my case, only one of the connections was loose. I was unable to fix it. Even though my device is out of warranty and has passed the 30 day return window (I bought it off Amazon), I managed to call them and they determined that it was a hardware failure and I already contacted Samsung customer support on this topic and they were unable to help me (since my model is 910F, the international/European version, they cannot help me) and they were able to create an RA to get a full refund for my phone. I decided I'm going to return it, and since the LG G4 is coming out soon, to just wait for that and ditch Samsung. LG has been good to me so far ever since I had my Nexus 4.
I had the same issue back when I bought my phone in October.
Went into my local Carphone Warehouse and replicated the problem to them and they sent it off for repair.
The repair slip just said that there was a hardware issue and that they had to replace the motherboard.
I believe Samsung offers a 1 year warranty so even if your store warranty has expired you can still get Samsung to fix this for you.
Wish you the best.
I would have had Samsung do it but when I called them they explained that they are unable to help me with my specific model of phone SM-910F (intl.) because it is manufactured for Europe, and that I would have to call Samsung UK to fix the problem/create an RA, and that would require me to be awake at 10pm- 8am or something stupid like that and make an international call to them and I did not want to have to deal with that. If they cannot fix a phone that I bought in the US and that I use in the US and it works fine in the US, then I would not like to do business with them any longer, seems like a stupid thing to do, manufacturing phones only for specific regions and telling people that they're out of luck when they have a problem with the phone if they're not using it in the region it was manufactured for.
so sadly my Note 4 has joined the group of devices with this frozen half grey screen and I am wondering whether anyone has a solution?

Well it's a couple of months since my last update on this frisen screen issue. Sent it off for repairs and sadly the repair notice didn't indicate what was done. I can only say the report said it's a software issue and returned the phone updated to 5.1.1 from kit kat. Haven't had the issue since.
