T-mobile Sim Card - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Using Mytouch 4G. T-mobile just told me to change my sim card that I am on a 2G Legacy Sim Card.. my current sim card seems to be working fine, no problems, no drop calls, except data throttle which is experienced by everyone..My main question is what is the difference between the new sim card they have and the old sim card(i have), and should i change it? Thanks.

I doubt it, haven't really been paying attention to my speed, except when throttled.

For whatever reason the various SIMs do allow for higher speed caps. I would see what type of speeds you are getting when not throttled. If they aren't 4G or high 3G speeds i would consider changing it.

Yeah, i will just go ahead and change it, i don't think it hurts, i've had this sim for 5yrs or more.. when i was talking to tmobile they just told me, the current sim card is on a 2g blah blah, it's not connecting to the updated networks true 4g speed. your device is more than capable of our true 4g network speed. so if they can see that am guessing they must know something i don't..Anyway thanks..

Weird.
I've only ever had 1 SIM from T Mobile. I got it about 6 years ago. It's been through a Samsung flip phone, 2 RAZR's, 1 MyTouch 3G, and now the MT4G.
I don't have any problems with data speeds.

I've never had problems with this sim card, but i guess at some point in life things need to be changed..I just finished talking to them and activating the sim card..they pretty much saying if i continue using the old sim card it's going to die out soon or later in terms of not been able to connect to the updated network speed, drop calls, signal issues and other little issues.. This new sim card is so called 3g 3rd generation sim card "as reported by their system".

No HSPA+ speed, try getting free replacement Sim card

So I've been disappointed with the network speed of my G2, and I confirmed with T-Mobile's coverage map that HSPA+ is live in my town. Went online and chatted with TMO's customer service (which is always great IMO), and he said I need to replace my old sim card with a free new one that is 3G/4G compatible. He put a note on my account and said I just need to stop by one of their stores to switch it out! Going on my lunch break today. Geez, I've had the phone for over a month and this was the problem all along. Will update later, hope this helps anyone in the same boat.
Hey Keith,
Dude the SIM card won't do a thing....They told me the same thing, and it actually made my speed slower the first few days...
As for the HSPA+ speeds, it seems there is a bug witht eh G2. Thesre are other posts in this forum that talk about waiting for another OTA to fix that maybe by the end of the month, maybe Dec. Once the my4g came out it was evident that the G2 was not hitting the speeds available.
I usually get about 2.5 Mbps, but have hit ocasionally the 4's, and once 6 point something...
Hope it helps.
Crey, that sucks but I'm going to try the new simcard anyway

Sim card has nothing to do with your hspa speeds. All your sim card does is let the phone know your info. It doesn't control / affect your 3g / hspa speeds. Go for it though. If that makes you feel comfortable its worth the shot then. Just letting you know so you won't be disappointed in the end. Gl bro.

Yeah, I went into the store a few days after getting the phone to get my sim replaced. For some reason whenever I buy a new phone they always take the new sim out of the box and put it behind their counter and take my old sim and put it in the new phone. Hopefully the new sim they gave me is the latest and greatest. Anyone know what the new sims look like?

The TMo rep is full of it then. He said I was getting a "new 3G/4G compatible simcard". Well, it's worth a shot but I'll know not to take the card back if it doesn't work.
Can't remember his name, but there was a user who commented on a previous post similar to this. His sim card was about 8 years old and he was hitting about 7 mb/s with hspa. I think its just your area. I inserted the sim that came with the phone and I get crappy hspa speeds. My area isn't fully supported. I top out at 3.5 mb/s. So its all depending on your area bro. Give it time. Hspa will expand more. Its brand new.

While it won't do much for speeds, getting a new UICC SIM is good as the older sim cars are running into what is known as ' sim exhaustion' from reaching their registration limit (90,000 times) while this may seem like a lot, it doesn't take much with the newer 3G/HSPA towers.
Each time you enter the radius of a new tower, your device registers to it (basic description) - your phone does this a lot each day, especially if you travel a good deal.
The new UICC sim cards do not have a registration limit, and do not reach exhaustion. They are marked on one side of the sim by the numbers TM 9073. If you don't see that, your sim isn't UICC.

Got my new simcard, it does have the TM9073 marking, and the gold contact area on the back looks different, its smaller. Ran a speedtest inside the T-Mobile store and got 4mbp down and 3mbp up. Not great but better than I ever got with my old simcard. Back inside my office I ran speedtest again and it was the same as before, a crappy 1.30mbp down and a little better 1.5mbp up. But still a little boost from the old card. Guess it's worth it to get a new free simcard if you have an old one.
If you can get a new SIM card, it'll be worth it. Though I doubt it will have any influence on network speed, I know I had to get a new one. Mine was running on seven years old!

After reading this thread, I called T-Mo as well and the 2nd tech i talked to saw that I had the old G1 card in my phone and arranged a free one to be picked up at a local store (this after the first time i called was told that it was the cookies in my browser causing the internet speed to be slow and wanted to remotely delete them (they can do that?) I was like WHOA!!! I LIKE MY COOKIES!! she then told me it was because i needed to pull the battery once a week and because i had not been doing that, that also was causing the slow data..lol hung up on her and called back) even though i didn't see any increase in my office, i did see an increase on the street..nyc.

HSDPA data connection not working on all sim cards.

I found this kinda interesting. I was playing around with the APN's and on my sim card iam able to use both .wap and HSDPA data connections with my sim card I upgraded with. But I took a sim card out of a BlackBerry Bold 9700 and I was only able to use the. .wap apn to connect to data, the HSDPA apn wouldn't connect.

Its working as intended
Just got off the phone with AT&T business because of network issues I am having today, and I asked about SIM cards since there are so many conflicting reports on what works.
I was told that any 3G SIM card which has the fireball logo does not need to be upgraded, as it will work as intended with the pseudo 4G network. If you have an older 3G SIM card, it will require replacement.
Also, I was told when I asked about us getting "4G" speed, that no towers in my area, (10 miles W of Boston), or where I work, (10 miles NW of Boston), are at the moment being upgraded for this capability. No dates show in the AT&T system for any of the towers in either location. I was told that if at all possible, everyone will have 4G speeds by the end of the year, which she told me would be 20mbps down. She also told me that some of the towers in my area are not even 3G capable.
We shall see as time moves on!

BBs also use a different dataplan so the APN may not be one allowed through that plan.
When I was on the phone with att they said I had HSPA+ enabled on my account/sim card, thought this might be a the issue. Has anyone bought a Atrix outright (without upgrade or new contract) have problems using data when conne ted to hspa data connection?

[Q] Can I get 3G+ on ATT Focus?

I've done the whole diagnosis tweaking (release 6) and pretty much all of the other tweaks I've found in these very helpful threads.
But my download and upload speeds are atrocious. 80-150 kbs mostly. I ALWAYS have a 3g signal. I'm located in Boston and before this I had a Tilt2, which data speeds avg. 2000 - 3500 kbs.
Could it be my sim card? it is like 3-4 years old. Just a thought, because really i have no idea.
I am a novice when it comes to this type of tweaking. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thx
The specs indicate that the Focus is only capable of HSPA (HSDPA and HSUPA), not HSPA+.
Michael.
ouch, that hurts....8(
Thanks for the quick reply...much appreciated
But your Focus should still be able to match the speed of your Tilt2 which is HSPA as well (but with HSUPA disabled). The real world experience really depends where you are and how many AT&T customers are on the same tower as you. I routinely get about 100kbps speed (download) on my various 3G smart phones as well here in nation's capital.
On the other hand, a lot of ppl who bought the new '4G' HSPA+ AT&T phones (Inspire 4G and Atrix 4G) are also rarely ever get HSPA+ speed at all. Those so called 4G phones also comes with HSUPA disabled.
So, in the end, it is the same crappy AT&T network that limits your connection speed, really doesn't matter what phone you have. I'll be happy if I can reach the full 3G speed (2 to 3 mbps down, 1mbps up) in next few years. And refuse to play the AT&T '4G' game.
You should get a new sim card considering it is 3-4 years old that will affect connectivity to 3g and hspa network..
Boston network shouldn't be a problem.
Samsung Focus At&t USA
I had the same problem when I had an old SIM card in my att fuze when trying to connect to 3g and hspa speed networks...rule of thumb is buy a new SIM when switching to a new phone....it also depends on what network your on...are you at&t?
Samsung Focus At&t USA
Yes, I am currently on Att network. Which I must say was really reliable and fast, up until the last few months...
And I will get a new sim card after work today or early tomorrow. I will let you know if that helps at all.
Thanks peeps 8)

Samsung Focus unlocked I get 3G+ in EU, if that helps. Seemed pretty fast, but I haven't done a speed test, though.
Usually I unlock my phone as soon as I get it home. With a bunch of unknowns with the Focus, I'm waiting it out right now before I do anything
So My phone is still locked 8)
Thanks for the help
I got 3G+ icoon with Rogers ROM, but not with AT&T ROM. And there's tool which can enable 3G+ icon, so I think it's just a registry issue.
3g+
I also get 3G+ with a Rogers sim card in my Focus, same card in the BB only 3G.
Is it possible to check whether this is just graphic, or there is a real difference in d/u speeds? I am using AT&T Focus in Europe.
You can check real speed with speediest.net to differentiate whether its gfx only or real network.

I'd love to hear what results you get if you test out the download/upload speeds. Like others have said you can use speedtest.net or there's a pretty good app called Bandwidth that I use.

[Q] t-mobile 4g malfunction

I tried to look for this problem, but couldn't find anything relevant...
finally got my unlocked nexus 4 in the mail today!
was super excited, cut my existing t-mobile sim card (I'm on a contract with them) and was able to connect to their network (can make calls and receive texts). When I try to connect to 4G, it takes ages to load a page. it takes the same page about 10 times as fast to load on 2G when i force 2G. Sometimes the page would time out and not load at all..
has anyone else experienced this problem?
Get a real microsim card, those cut sims don't work very well. They're free. I got one from tmobile and I have no problems with my 4g connection, blazing fast.
the sim worked fine on my t-mobile G2, but i guess i'll try to order a real micro anyways.
Did you set up the proper APNs? Check into that before anything else.

I tried to find a way to order a microsim online, and failed. So, I went to the t-mob online chat support, waited about 15 min, and the guy told me that i had to call in or go to a store and that a replacement would not be free of charge.
So, I called in, waited about 15 seconds, and the guy sent a microsim my way for free..
I believe magic is at work here..
will let you know if the new sim solves the problem

when i bought my nexus 4 from a tmobile store, the sim card that came with the phone which was also activated at purchase only let me have speeds of ~39kbps download and ~9kbps upload. this lasted me for about 2 hours and i returned to the store and complained. they swapped it out with a new sim card and i've been getting about 8mbps download and 1.2mbps upload here in Salt Lake City.
not real sure what my point is, but, sim replacement is fairly easy and would be my suggestion after my experience.
well.. I got my new sim card last night and realized that the speeds have nothing to do with my sim card, but probably with the local tower. before i got the new sim card, I sometimes got decent speeds (~4mbps) and sometimes it wouldnt connect. When I got the new sim card, the speedtest gave me 4 kbps.. about 10 miles away from here I got 5 mbps.
So the old sim card behaved exactly as the new one =/
I never had this problem with the G2, though. And I would get speeds up to 20 mbps on the same network..
So this is still very upsetting and confusing

Might be a localized problem with the tower, call t-mobile, and they'll have technicians come out and look at it. Or, try another android phone and see if you have the same problem, that'll tell you whether or not it's the phone, if it's the phone, get a warranty replacement, might be a problem with the radio hardware.

same happened to me, its because they've been refarming their 3g network towers. just call T-Mobile customer service and tell them your 3g/4g data isn't working anymore and tell them the address where its not working and they'll fix it. it took a couple days
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
hmm, data service is fine here. getting around 12-14 down and 1 up...
if its not the sim and your APN seems fine, try contacting Tmo and see if its on thier end. If not maybe its simply a defected device =/
I cut my SGSII simcard and it works perfectly, it is because of the G2 using an older version simcard.
Cut my SIM card they gave me earlier this year when I switched from AT&T with my Galaxy Nexus. Also works fine. Also, you shouldn't have to mess with the APN settings. At all. Should do it automatically.

Lte/3g dropping issue fix

For those that have LTE/3G dropping issues I believe i have found a fix.
There appears to be something wrong with the sim card that comes with the note 4... my connection would drop lte and 3g a lot...so I tried another sim card from my S4 and the connection did not drop no more!
A few days later I had to get a replacement phone because I noticed a few dead pixels. When I received it..it had the same connection dropping issues with the sim card that came with the phone. So once again I popped in the S4 sim card and the connection was good again!
I have the black note 4 bought from amazon and in the NYC area. So it might be a bad batch but if you have connection issues try a different sim card!!

I apologize if this is the wrong place for this question, I have had pretty much 1 bar of signal on both mine and my wife's Note 4 since we activated them less than a month ago. i just ran a speed test and the average download speed was 21.57 Mbps - is this good or not?

The bars are wrong for one. Use Signal Check lite or pro to see what is really going on.
If you are given a hard time about a new SIM, just tell them that you are buying a Nexus 5 on Googe's website and you need a SIM.. assuming that takes the same size

I dont get it what does the sim have to do with the operation of the radio constantly to different bands. Seems more to me like the tower selection algorithms are flawed to me and I doubt those algos are on a sim. Maybe chosing the sim from the other phone is forcing you onto the older lte network. Are you getting on any of the new bands?

The sim handles lte connection. Without the sim the phone will only connect to 3g and 1x.
Yes I'm connecting to all 3 bands wherever available. Before swapping out the sim card it would drop connection to 3g and even when on 3g it would lose connection to no signal and connect back to 3g.
There would be times it would connect to b41 but if it goes idle for a few seconds the connection will drop to 3g. This has been my experience with 3 note 4s that I received from amazon. Each after replacing the sim card will fix the connection issue.
I may have gotten a bad batch of sim cards..who knows but the areas I frequent with my nexus 5 all had strong b41 signals in the NYC market. So I know it's not my area that's the problem.
I took my N4 to a Sprint service center yesterday. The ran a speed test and it got 15 up and own. Of course we know they have a booster on site so all phones work great in the store. I showed them the speed records of nothing over 2 for the last week regardless of location and they then took the phone back to one of the techs. not realizing I was paying attention the rep handed the phone through the window to the tech but never actually let go of it. Came back about three minutes later and said yeah the tech says the phone is fine. So then he goes to a terminal and asks for my ZIP. I give it and he types it in does a few mouse clicks and a few facial expressions like he is discovering the issue. Then tells me they are converting the towers in my area from 3G to 4G and I should see my speeds come up in six months. Yep six months.
So I said ok that covers you for my area at home in North Dallas but what about where I work in Southlake? Of they are doing the same there as well.
So I got brushed of by Sprint and still have a slow phone. Asked for an old SIM and they said due to security all unused SIMS are destroyed.

I believe there's a international chat or something that you can request a sim from...when the nexus 5 came out that was how people were able to obtain Sims from. Just need to tell them you need a sim card for a Google purchased nexus 5
I had some hope and tried the Sim card trick. My S4 had 4G_LTE almost every location I used it in for over a year, and once on lte it never dropped to 3G... Data speed was 5 to 10 MEG. My note 4 for the last 30 days is probably 75% on 3G, 1/4 to 1 Meg download and almost nonexistent upload speed. When it sometimes does connect to 4G it will soon drop to 3G. Funny thing my daughter also has the note 4, and when she comes to my house she will be on 4G the whole time. While mine goes from 4 to mostly 3G.
I powered off both phones and put my s4 Sim into the note 4. Powered it on and the 3g icon kept spinning. Finally a self service app came on and said to call Sprint to be able to use data, (I'm assuming), there was an option to reset cell data and I clicked that. The phone then did a self activation, updated prl and profile while it rebooted a couple times.
Old s4 sim always getting strong 4G lte in my S4 was now providing strong 3G only in my new note 4.
OK, power off and switch the Sims back to there original phone. Now I am back to occasionally seeing 4 G, as before now I am usually on slow 3G.
I will now call Sprint and exchange the phone if necessary. I have unlimited data too. I can't wait to access it on this phone.
Excuse portions of this that seem to be rant... They are [emoji12]

No I did not activate the S4 Sim on Sprint. Com. A message came up when the phone booted saying call sprint star 2. I selected reset cell data and the phone seemed to be doing a hands free activation, when the phone rebooted it seems like it wanted to go through the same hoops again so maybe the sim was never properly activated like you're stating. I might try that later its just getting to be a pain in the ass trying to make a phone operate the way it should out of the box.
Did you activate your S 4 sim on sprint.com?
