HSDPA data connection not working on all sim cards. - Atrix 4G General

I found this kinda interesting. I was playing around with the APN's and on my sim card iam able to use both .wap and HSDPA data connections with my sim card I upgraded with. But I took a sim card out of a BlackBerry Bold 9700 and I was only able to use the. .wap apn to connect to data, the HSDPA apn wouldn't connect.

Its working as intended

Just got off the phone with AT&T business because of network issues I am having today, and I asked about SIM cards since there are so many conflicting reports on what works.
I was told that any 3G SIM card which has the fireball logo does not need to be upgraded, as it will work as intended with the pseudo 4G network. If you have an older 3G SIM card, it will require replacement.
Also, I was told when I asked about us getting "4G" speed, that no towers in my area, (10 miles W of Boston), or where I work, (10 miles NW of Boston), are at the moment being upgraded for this capability. No dates show in the AT&T system for any of the towers in either location. I was told that if at all possible, everyone will have 4G speeds by the end of the year, which she told me would be 20mbps down. She also told me that some of the towers in my area are not even 3G capable.
We shall see as time moves on!

BBs also use a different dataplan so the APN may not be one allowed through that plan.

When I was on the phone with att they said I had HSPA+ enabled on my account/sim card, thought this might be a the issue. Has anyone bought a Atrix outright (without upgrade or new contract) have problems using data when conne ted to hspa data connection?

Boost mobile?

Hi. This might be a dumb question, but i couldnt find the answer. Can a boostmobile sim card be used in an unlocked Streak?
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I would say no it will not because Boost mobile uses iDEN network which supports the walk talky feature on boostmobile. I had a Motorola Clutch from boostmobile and tried to use the sim card in my Unlocked Nokia 5800 and it wouldn't work because GSM sim cards are different from iDEN sim cards and they are different networks. What I did after that was go over to T-Mobiles even more plus plan which is a no contract plan like boostmobiles is and for $50 a month i got 500 minutes and unlimited texts and data and since T-Mobile is GSM, the sim card will work in just about every sim card phone since most of them support GSM.
Sprint is phasing out the iDEN network and I think boostmobile is the only carrier that is actually using it. I hope this helps and I would recommend switching to T-mobiles even more plus plan if you want a contract free plan and want to be able to use any unlocked GSM phone that you want. You just have to call t-mobiles customer service and they will set you up and send you a sim card with in the 1-3 business days. If you get t-mobile and get the unlocked dell streak you will not have 3G data speeds however. you will be stuck on 2G (edge) since it doesn't have the frequency for t-mobiles 3G connection.
Hey thanks a lot. I'll be switching to tmobile soon enough.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
You're welcome. You can try and see if it will work but I doubt it will.
The answer is no.
An IDEN sim will not work in a GSM device.
Or vice versa.
Don't waste your time.

T-mobile Sim Card

Using Mytouch 4G. T-mobile just told me to change my sim card that I am on a 2G Legacy Sim Card.. my current sim card seems to be working fine, no problems, no drop calls, except data throttle which is experienced by everyone..My main question is what is the difference between the new sim card they have and the old sim card(i have), and should i change it? Thanks.

For whatever reason the various SIMs do allow for higher speed caps. I would see what type of speeds you are getting when not throttled. If they aren't 4G or high 3G speeds i would consider changing it.

Yeah, i will just go ahead and change it, i don't think it hurts, i've had this sim for 5yrs or more.. when i was talking to tmobile they just told me, the current sim card is on a 2g blah blah, it's not connecting to the updated networks true 4g speed. your device is more than capable of our true 4g network speed. so if they can see that am guessing they must know something i don't..Anyway thanks..
Weird.
I've only ever had 1 SIM from T Mobile. I got it about 6 years ago. It's been through a Samsung flip phone, 2 RAZR's, 1 MyTouch 3G, and now the MT4G.
I don't have any problems with data speeds.

I've never had problems with this sim card, but i guess at some point in life things need to be changed..I just finished talking to them and activating the sim card..they pretty much saying if i continue using the old sim card it's going to die out soon or later in terms of not been able to connect to the updated network speed, drop calls, signal issues and other little issues.. This new sim card is so called 3g 3rd generation sim card "as reported by their system".

Can I use an ATT phone on net10

Never heard of Net10 til today. It's new in my area. Can I use an att Lumia 900 on it unlocked? It'd be a savior on the bill. What are your thoughts on net10 service?

From what I understand, Net10 phones only work with a sim card specific to that device. Swapping the sim cards wouldn't work. Straight talk is always an option since it uses GSM. It runs on t-mobiles network.

I don't think so. From what I was reading, unlocking it wouldn't matter. The sim card and the phone it was with other work together. You can't use an AT&T sim card in an Net10 phone or a Net10 sim card in an AT&T phone
That was what I got from a little researching. I could be wrong.
And ST is always an option as well. They have good plans and use GSM so swapping sim cards wouldn't be an issue.

I'm using the Galaxy Note with a NET10 sim.
Things you should be aware of:
1. Web access doesnt work if you are roaming
2. YOu can use a AT&T locked phone (as mine is locked)
Unlimited plan is really limited to your area code. ONce you cross the line you don't get to use data.
So you will be screw on your travels or work outside your area.
I just signed up. But wish I hadn't.

So the NET10 rep couldn't solve my web access problem on the Note BUT I've it working w/O their help.
IT works outside my area code and I get average 3G speed.
So you AT&T android phone doesn't have to be unlocked to be able to use NET10.
will you please tell us just how you managed to do this??
please post your settings....even your new APN settings if you had to make new..

NET10 new plan
this my first post but i hope it help,
NET10 had just came up with there unlimited plan of $50 (talk, text and date (3G)) or $65 with all that + international calling to almost 50 countries, and they are saying on the SIM card kit, to bring your GSM unlocked or compatible phone , Iphone, Android, Smart phone.
and it should work, pop the sim in and follow the instructions.
I'm actually thinking seriously to switch to them after buying a AT&T HTC Vivid, thinking i'll be able to use with t-mobile 4G, to find the LTE Curse is on my Vivid.
i talked to a dealer of NET10 and he told me the NET10 uses both networks, and you are guaranteed to get 3G speed on any phone capable of having 3G speed.
this text is copied from NET10sim web page
"Use virtually any compatible or unlocked GSM phone with our NET10 SIM to get service on the best nationwide networks."
i got the sim, but it was 2 days after I paid for my t-mo for this month, I'll post my experience once I try it on my LTE cursed Vivid phone, and check the 3G service.
Hope this helped. :fingers-crossed:
If the phone doesnt get 1700/2100 for 3g then you will have to wait for the refarm.

So what happened???? I'm really considering switching to Net10 over At&t. It would save me about $30 a month, and give all my phone lines unlimited data not just mine.
I am using my NET10 micro-sim card (for AT&T) as part of their Bring Your Own Phone (BYOP) sim card package in my new AT&T-branded Sony Xperia Ion (LT28at) that has been unlocked to carrier. I'm in a small area in western South Dakota that has AT&T coverage, and I am getting 4g speeds on the cellular service from my home. The reception is great, and you do get edge (2g) and 3g data while traveling outside your area, just not the highest speeds. I travel to Seattle frequently for business and can verify this. With prepaid monthly it is about $47.50 (with taxes) per month. HUGELY worth it after being 'chained' to Verizon for years and years!
im on a s4 non prepaid at&t phone using net 10 on the at&t network. no problems and i live in wautoma wisc.

Help. nexus 4 can't connect to att

I had a dumb phone on att before this with no data plans. I got a new sim card recently from att, but for some reason the phone won't recognize my sim card and I don't know why. I tried my sister's sim card and it worked. She has an iPhone 4s. Does anyone know what the problem is?
Sounds like you may need to add a data plan or head to an AT&T store and have them help you sort out these issues. Did you put in the proper APN setting?

Call AT&T and tell them you have a new unlocked LTE phone. It appears that if your account isn't provisioned for LTE, then your phone is stuck in 3G only speeds (1mbit up and 1mbit down), or worse, no connection at all.
Easy way to tell is : If you only get service through the "wap.cingular" APN, and no connection through either "pta" or "phone" APNs, your line is not provisioned correctly.
I'd say you need to get a data plan. No settings or SIM card is going to change that since you're coming from a "dumb" phone plan.

The Nexus 4 isn't LTE.
On AT&T they have to provision the sim for the proper data plan. As an example, when I put my iphone5 sim (with LTE data) in my Inspire (an HSPA phone like the Nexus 4) I don't have any data connectivity even though I can make/receive calls and texts.
I know the Nexus 4 isn't LTE. AT&T doesn't. Your handset won't be able to access anything beyond HSDPA if your account isn't provisioned for LTE when using unlocked handsets that AT&T doesn't sell.
It has something to do with how they do IMEI detection now. My data plan was switched to dumbphone data within an hour of me switching my SIM to the Nexus 4 as they don't have it on their IMEI database and assumed it was a dumbphone.

I had the same problem, they are incompetent and when I called the first time they put me on some Blackberry data plan that worked for a day and then stopped working completely. Then I called again and asked to be provisioned for APN "phone" I just told them my phone is 4G/LTE and to just do it. With the settings from this thread, my phone now works fine on HSPA+, getting 3-6Mbps/1Mbps at home where the signal is mediocre.

Yeah, to access the HSPA+ speeds, you need to be on either the "pta" or "phone" APN.
The "wap.cingular" APN will top out at ~1mbit up and down. To have access to either of those APNs your account needs to be provisioned for LTE.
Out of curiosity, what's the difference between APN "pta" and "phone"? When I asked AT&T tech support I was told "pta is not supported, you get provisioned on phone" - whatever that means. But I went to an AT&T store and looked at the APN settings for the old HTC One X and it's set to "pta", while the new HTC One X+ released a week or so ago is set to "phone". Both LTE, both gave about the same speedtest results.
Not sure, but I know PTA is ostensibly for LTE.

mine stopped connecting to T-mobile. After 3 restores and swapping sims, and adding and deleting APNs, tmobile deemed my device as defected by fault of the radio. I also flashed stock rom through w/fastboot just out of curiousity and still doesnt work.
Could be a similar issue with the OPs
Mine stops connecting to AT&T sometimes too, it seems to happen when I transition from the home wifi to AT&T data. The phone status still shows that it's connected to HSPA, good signal but it can't send/receive any data. Luckily so far a reboot has solved the problem. Not sure if it's an N4 problem or a problem on the AT&T side.

I had a similar issue. I gave my upgrade to my wife for the new iPhone 5 and got a new sim card for the Nexus 4. Called AT&T and said that the problem was that the iPhone's IMEI was on my line; they added my IMEI. Rebooted my phone and voila! I am now connected to their HSPA network. Hope this helps.

Unstable network connection (AT&T)

Hey guys so I love my nexus 4 I've had it for about three weeks now. One thing that is very frustrating is that my network connection is constantly going on and off. On the status bar it goes from full blue bars with an H and then all of a sudden I try to use an app and it says no network connection and the blue bars turn grey and it just goes on and off every couple seconds. It has done it probably 10 times as I'm writing this. Anyone else have this problem? Help!

I have the same issue when I won't get my work emails and would have to disable/enable my "Data" connection in order to get my emails sync right away which is a little annoying.
Another issue that I have for example is that I can't run the "speedtest" App on my phone using the default APN from AT&T so after looking around I switched from WAP to PHONE (unfortunately I am on my company plan and don't know what kind of plan I have) and speedtest is now working fine.
And finally, I followed "gotzaDroid" and downloaded the "Fresh Network App" and my download speed spikes to 5Mbps (still using the PHONE APN instead of WAP) when it usually spikes at 2.7Mbps. As of right now, after playing with it for 5 minutes I can say that I am happy with this App.
i'm down here in houston and i was having the same problem. i have a grandfather plan from when the iphone first came out. dropped my sim card in and was barely even getting 2g speeds. couldn't even do a speed test. from what i've heard from other members on the forum is that AT&T doesn't recognize the N4 as an official smartphone in their database. you'd have to call them and get them to redirect their 4G data plan to your phone. there's a specific IMEI number you give them (not the one on your phone or else it'll turn up nothing in their database). if i find it, i'll post it here. once that's done, you should get the high speed data. but for me, i was done paying my grandfathered plan, over $100/month. i switched over to t-mobile's monthly plan and it's been awesome. got up to 15 MB/s even though sometimes is says 3G rather than H.
Similar issue. I have full bars, but its just the data connection which keeps flapping. (The H for HSPA keeps appearing disappearing) I am on the original iphone unlimited 4g data plan.
This happens only when using the "phone" APN (http://mmsc.mobile.att.net). But when i use the wap.cingular APN, no such issue. But obviously, with this APN, the speeds are unknown (speedtest app reports connectivity issue, but data works fine across all apps. And from feel, its definitely hspa with a H in the display)
EDIT: located in bay area.
I have also found today that sometimes toggling airplane mode on and off clears it up too

You certainly can, with actual service..
for those on straight talk using att... line three and four of your apn. proxy and port. delete those. this will stop you from having to go through the starght talk servers in chicago. this should speed you up and hopefully fix you up. its also rumored to keep you from being throttled once you hit the threshold.
the same proxy trick can be done for those on att. i am not on t-mobile so i cannot speak for those.
it goes without saying... if you have never manually entered your apn since you got the nexus.... you need to find the correct apn and enter it. just inserting a sim card is not how you get the apn. it has to be entered manually or flashed in a modem (for carrier phones).
for those on att or att straight talk. all you need is one apn. and enter your phone and mms on the same one.
