I mailed to samsung about updates and service called me. I talked long.
I asked about ics for us. And they said galaxy s will get all updates till android ends.
I understand we will get ics and all of the next updates.
Can this be real?
(Also they confirmed a new rom end of this month.)

No, it can't be real because there will come a time where the sgs specs will no longer be enough to run the latest android. Or Samsung will decide to stop investing in the sgs. Porting costs money.

I'm pretty sure, Samsung Galaxy S will continue to get updates as long as 2.x.x continues and it will continue for low-end devices, such as security updates and bug fixes. Heck, Amazon Kindle has an 2.x.x android and is grand hit in US for instance or just like Firefox 3.x is continuing to get updates as 3.x.x still...
But I don't think it will get official Ice Cream Sandwich but sure 4.0 will be out for it, unofficially...

About the samsung answer, of course it's bullcrap, but it's phone service, im not surprised.
Actually it wouldn't surprise me that the person you talked with had absolutely no idea what android is, he just said random stuff about it "yea until android exists, sure, bye!"
I don't think sgs will get ics. If it would why didn't they announce it at the same time they said sgs2 will get it??

They are indeed still releasing updates for firefox 3. But they are encouraging people to update to the latest version. Support for FF3 will stop in a while imo. They won't be putting effort forever in a legacy firefox

Ontopic: tbh the reason why it is taking so long for ics updates is probably because touchwiz has to be rewritten for ICS. I wouldn't count on an ics update for the galaxy s (not saying it's not possible) but i wouldn't care to much. We will still be getting ics though cyanogen if samsung doesnt release it officially

I expect things to change greatly once 3.0 comes out..this is when release cycles for android will slow down thus giving manufacturers more leeway..
Agreed. I think they are planning on phazing out UI overlays as well when 3.0 comes out. No more motoblur, sense, tw, etc. For the tech geek we like it because we port things over from other platforms. But the Ios boobs they just want something shiny and homoginized, and that's probably the demographing android wants to really take on

The plain Samsung Galaxy S is getting an update from 2.2 to 2.2.1. I think the OP was posting this to show that Samsung is updating it's other Galaxy S phones, while we're yet to receive our own official 2.2 or 2.2.1 update.

Its not giving us an update in the US this is for the I9000 galaxy s in europe and the rest of the world from the sounds of it but maybe this is a good sign that we will be getting our froyo soon. But I somehow doubt it.
The European Galaxy S has had Froyo for a while now. This is just saying that they are doing OTA updates now for those that hadn't done it previously through the Kies software.

Not a good enough reason. If you notice the dfferent versions of GB they've went through you'll understand that for every GB version 2.3, 2.3.2, 2.3.3, and 2.3.4; Samsung took a month to two months of testing and improving. GB been in the works since april/may starting with 2.3 and now we're at 2.3.4. And from the looks of it they're in the last month of testing and improving GB

Amen Bro ! Thats why I love this site so much. It doesn't really matter what T-Mobile does so its kind of a pointless conversation. I would't really even take the KIES update or OTA update from T-Mobile anyways. I will wait untill someone here gets a good stable JB Release. I am reluctant to change because my ICS rom is so smooth and stable but I know within a few months it will be worth it. It's like a slap in the face to the slow and bloated T-Mo. Rom.

I wouldn't do a kies update either. My hope is for Samsung to release source so that the devs here have more to work with. That was what dogged the vibrant. They eventually released Froyo for it, but nothing further. The GB/ICS/JB releases for it were all ported from either the i9000 or the Nexus S, and had to be tweaked since there was no actual source to work with for the vibrant itself. That's why the GPS was so spotty on it on any version of android after Froyo. I'm glad that my insurance replacement for my busted Vibrant was the Hercules, which is still in the window of time (was it 18 months?) that they pledged to support upgrades to android. Whether we actually see it is another story. At least the devs here really kick some butt on the ROMs they release.

My apologies for sounding lazy (I am not, and quick search didn't yield results for me), but can you refer to that post, please? Not by SamMobile or the likes (there are tons of links to those "insider news"), but directly by Samsung? I am definitely not expecting 5.0, but even for 4.2.2, I have to admit, I am as skeptical as I am hopeful at this time...

Personally, I couldn't care less about the update timeline for specific regions or carriers, and I see absolutely no reason for waiting... As soon as the first official release drops (for whatever region), it will become available for download and flashing. That's all I need. And shortly after, modded ROMs based on that stock release will appear.
