Where's teh Gingerbread? - Epic 4G General

Its now october and we've yet to see any official gingerbread and sources, I've lost all respect to samsung and there dev team. They've had 2 chances for an ontime release and failed both. Our latest leaks are crap with reboots and other difficulties. Even after about a half a year a major company cannot put out and release a quality piece of gingerbread.

Competely agree. I like the hardware, samsung software support is terrible compared to htc and moto. Disappointed that samsung does not want to continue to support their hardware. Can't say I am jumping up and down to buy another samsung product (except maybe nexus) when my contract is up in a few months.

They release the best hardware then get lazy with the software, lol

Does anyone even know why they're taking so long to get it to us

At this point I hope we don't get gingerbread. Much rather wait another month or two and get ICS. That would be the **** if at the Samsung/Google event on Oct 11th they announce ICS builds for all of their Galaxy S and Galaxy S II phones.

there samsung, all the reason you'll ever need.

Not a good enough reason. If you notice the dfferent versions of GB they've went through you'll understand that for every GB version 2.3, 2.3.2, 2.3.3, and 2.3.4; Samsung took a month to two months of testing and improving. GB been in the works since april/may starting with 2.3 and now we're at 2.3.4. And from the looks of it they're in the last month of testing and improving GB

Even though 2.3.7 is out apparently lol.
I however, could have misread.

It's all really simple if you think about it.
Icecream sandwich isn't out yet. Therefore we don't have gingerbread. The general rule of thumb with these phones has been always being one release behind.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk

If I wanted to be locked in to a manufacturer's software release schedule so I could ***** about delays on forums, I would have bought an iPhone. Instead, I bought an Android phone and have had Gingerbread for months.

I'm pretty happy with Froyo... ACS made it manageable.

My first cell phone came in its own backpack that had to be unzippered to raise an antennae and I still couldn't make a call unless I was in the middle of a big open area without so much as a friggin tree within 100 feet, and your ACS Froyo Epic is manageable. I expect things to change greatly once 3.0 comes out..this is when release cycles for android will slow down thus giving manufacturers more leeway..
Agreed. I think they are planning on phazing out UI overlays as well when 3.0 comes out. No more motoblur, sense, tw, etc. For the tech geek we like it because we port things over from other platforms. But the Ios boobs they just want something shiny and homoginized, and that's probably the demographing android wants to really take on

Gingerbread has had about 8 leaks for the Epic.
But it's still not official.
I'm not worried about updates if AOSP is going to support it.
I hear you, but the developers will most likely be a key factor. Aosp runs great, but is too bland foyer my taste...even with a third party launcher.

I think given the rumors of a 4.5 inch screen and 720p resolution, I'd rather wait for news of the Nexus Prime.
If for some reason it doesn't come out on Sprint right away, the SG2 would also be a worthy upgrade.

Also, the Samsung Stratusphere that will soon be released on Verizon is somewhat identical to our Epic's so...best case scenerio: it will eventually get ICS and we can port it over or use some of their source to build from. Worst case scenerio: we can borrow some of their devs so they can help us out with whatever we need help with

[ICS] should they stop working on it

I've been following the ics project since after my birthday (11/27/11) and a lot has changed but when it comes to (FFC) it came to me that its not gonna work till maybe after the summer or never, whenever HTC gives out the code bit what's your opinion about the ics for the EVO 4G?
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium

My bad I thought it was general at first. The system will automaticly do it for me as usual.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
ummm my opinion on it is that if they dont want to they shouldnt. It will give us an awesome rom but more importantly that means our wonderful devs are learning stuff. this means that in the future they can use these experiences to help them in work or in other aspects of there personal lifes. so dev on guys you are doing great
Why in the world should they stop working on ICS? It makes little sense.
Deck and Kang and others are making great ICS ROMs for lots of phones, not just the EVO4G.
htc will release the code.. because it is an open source project. when is the question, not if.

The OS code is open source. The device drivers are not last I knew. So no, HTC does not have to release driver code.
HTC may release the FFC code for our OG's as soon as they sell enough of their newer devices.
They seem to be dragging their feet in releasing the official ICS updates for the Evo 3D and the Evo Design when they said they would, but they're holding it back, why? Cuz they want to sell enough of the One series models before they officially update the older HTC models that are scheduled to be updated with ICS.
Its kinda crappy of HTC to do that, but hey, they're a "for-profit" business.
But in answer to your question, heck no they shouldn't stop developing ICS for our OG Evo's! This sh*t is fun as hell.

Yeah, I don't get why a thread was started for this. But why should devs abandon ICS on Evo? Because they can't get FFC to work!? I've been on ICS since the minute they got camera working (around Xmas), and could NEVER imagine going back to GB or Froyo (well, ...maybe froyo).

The evo is EOL(end of life) HTC doesn't have to support it any longer meaning they won't release any source for it as they are not working on ICS for the device. Hardware mfgs may release source for the same hardware in other devices, like they did with the adreno or the devs may code their own drivers. But don't expect HTC to do a damn thing for the evo, period.

All I'm saying we have a lot of people love the ics Rom but some people hate it cause no 4G. But let me tell one thing about the ics it came a lot since then and like some people who are poor or they don't make a lot of money, its hard to keep up with ics roms when the last two months the biggest change was 4.0.4 which is like starting all over again. Don't get me wrong with the debate about their work, its freaking amazing, but the biggest break through will be the ffc. Closest to that is from a horse ride to a plane ride experience
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
I don't think that they should stop working on the ICS ROM's. I went from Sense to Ice Cream Sense to ICS and having ICS on my phone is like having a brand new phone. We don't have 4G in our area, and the front facing camera I hardly used. I am using gummyWorms ICS right now and so far had no major problems with it. There are minor glitches sometimes but, that is no big deal. I hope that the ICS developers can get everything working and I know that it will take time to do so. I appreciate all of their hard work in bringing us some ICS goodness to our phones.

Wow, this is my first samsung phone so I didn't know such sad history existed. Well, whatever will be, I hope cm10 will be stable by then. I'm not a big fan of TouchWiz myself. My next phone will be a Google device phone. OS support is more important to me than specs

Amen Bro ! Thats why I love this site so much. It doesn't really matter what T-Mobile does so its kind of a pointless conversation. I would't really even take the KIES update or OTA update from T-Mobile anyways. I will wait untill someone here gets a good stable JB Release. I am reluctant to change because my ICS rom is so smooth and stable but I know within a few months it will be worth it. It's like a slap in the face to the slow and bloated T-Mo. Rom.

I wouldn't do a kies update either. My hope is for Samsung to release source so that the devs here have more to work with. That was what dogged the vibrant. They eventually released Froyo for it, but nothing further. The GB/ICS/JB releases for it were all ported from either the i9000 or the Nexus S, and had to be tweaked since there was no actual source to work with for the vibrant itself. That's why the GPS was so spotty on it on any version of android after Froyo. I'm glad that my insurance replacement for my busted Vibrant was the Hercules, which is still in the window of time (was it 18 months?) that they pledged to support upgrades to android. Whether we actually see it is another story. At least the devs here really kick some butt on the ROMs they release.
Just got JB on my tf300 2 days ago
Asus updates waaaay quicker than Samsung! Maybe later on I could get an Asus Phone.

There's already a Jelly Bean discussion thread that has been hidden away at the top of this forum
