For Those Coming From A Galaxy S2...

So the Galaxy Nexus released in Canada today and I went to a local store to play with a live demo. Now am I just spoiled from using the I9100 (I imported one right when it was released), because although the Nexus felt generally smooth, my S2 feels so much faster in most aspects. I thoroughly played with it for 30 minutes and tested as many functions as I could.
This is disappointing because I felt Ice Cream and graphics acceleration would make this thing fly, even though the internals are inferior to the S2.
Now the reason I bring this up, is that from some perusing through these threads here, the Note is generally claimed to be slower than the S2 (as it has more pixels to push). I guess my S2 has spoiled me since anything else I use now feels sluggish, except of course for when I play with my buddy's iPhone 4S. So, my question to those coming from the S2 to a Note, how much slower is it and does it take a while to get used to it? Extra bonus points for those who have played with all three devices and can possibly rank them from fastest to slowest.
It just sucks that we don't have the Note in Canada so I can't really test the speed difference for myself

sgs2 has had tons of updates and development. Galaxy Note is a brand new device and have little development right now. It will speed up and with the great supercurio coming aboard we should see some new improvements. Give it a little tim e.
Even though I had a defective unit, it was just a fast as my sgs2. I really didnt experience any real lag until I tried go launcher.

Im coming from the sg1 to sg2 and now the note.
The sg2 blows the sgs out of the water and in my experiance is a fair bit smoother then the note. I use launcher pro and have a few widgets on screen, using the same widget setup as my gs2 its a bit slower.
But ive got more icons on screen on the note so it does test the sysyem a bit more, its noticably a little laggy in comparison. You have such a big hi res screen your bound to put more stuff on it.
Im sure if i set the screen for the same icon grid and made an exact comparison it would perform similar to the gs2.

After updating to the XXKK9 firmware the Gnote is much faster compared to the S2, everything else is better on the Gnote.

Opening apps is much quicker then the s2 the only slight lag I get is flicking between home screens. Doesn't bother me, I prefer having more stuff accessible to sacrifice a little UI smoothness.
I have the same XXKK9 firmware which i got via an ota update the day i powered my phone up first time. Its still all stock only been a couple our days for me.

Thanks for the input, everyone. Just a little nervous to drop $700+ on a device only to have it underperform to my expectations. First thing I will do is load KK9 then. The Note seems like the perfect device since it's basically a beefed up S2 which is my fav device of all-time, with a huge screen (something I've been looking for) and a stylus (so I can keep my gloves on through these harsh Canadian winters). Very excited, going to order it now!

I still feel Note is slightly slow than S2 while page flicking and scrolling (huge list like 700 contacts). My region hasn't upgraded to 2.3.6 and maybe it will go away. The satisfaction you get from large screen outweighs that minor hiccup.

My Note is still on KK1 (Kies reports this is the latest firmware available for my version of the phone). I first set up my Note just like my S2, with a lot of Widgetsoid widgets. The extra screen space provided space for like 45 widgets. It was laggy. I ditched all but about 5-6 Widgetsoid widgets (the larger screen allows enough Touchwiz icons for my purposes), and I stopped experiencing any lag. Subjectively, though, the S2 somehow seems a bit more responsive, even overly responsive because the screen is set to a more sensitive setting. But when I look at it objectively, I think there's no difference in lag between my S2 and my Note, now that I have a sane home screen.

A couple of the widgets I had been using have just been updated used with launcher pro now my note is running as smooth a the gs2.
I think with newer firmware and a bit of time for apps to update so they run better on high resolution screens this thing will be awesome.
The hardware is there it just needs the software to back it up and not hold it back.

I've had my Samsung Note for the last month and whilst I'm happy with it I cannot help but grumble about it's speed/response even when used on different launchers...
Though it runs ok it can be slow from time to time especially when suddenly unlocking it and opening your contacts or messages. This results in a few second delay.
Also when scrolling up/down through contacts/settings menu it's jerky, not smooth.
When comparing it to my Sony Ericsson Xperia Play which has a single core 1GHz cpu & 512Mb of ram it is miles faster and 100% smooth in every possible way compared to my Note. You'd expect the Note to be faster than The Sony Ericsson Xperia.
Why is a much lower spec phone much faster & smoother than my Note?

You might think on that the Note has almost three times the pixelamount to shuffle around compared to a SE Play

That's true but then why make an underpowered phone which then results in lag & sluggishness?
Samsung should of increased the ram & cpu to solve this issue...
I know the SE has far less pixelmounts to shuffle but it's still bad considering a phone having just 512mb ram and a single core 1GHz processor destroy a phone having almost double the ram & a dual core processor.
I would of least expected it to be of a similar speed but it's lagging far behind.
The ONLY areas in which My Samsung Note beats my SE in tems of speed are:
Internet/browsing
Going through photos/zooming in/out
Aside from these 2 points the Note is far slower in every possible way. I hope the upcoming icecream sandwich can solve these issues...
I've seen several people running the proper official version of ice cream sandwich as standard on their Samsung Galaxy Nexus and their saying it's a HUGE & NOTICABLE difference compared to the previous version of Android.
I hope the same can be said when the Note gets it's upgrade!

This sounds like an individual problem. For if the Note was faulty as described then it would have been noticed by the 80% in the poll here who like me think the note is pretty perfect.

that is not an answer........note also has dual core prossesor wid more speed and double ram.....so whatever may b d reason, it should not b slow or laggy.....
Reason is not pixel or hardware, its software......
Gingerbread is not optimised for this, it is not utilising the power of note fully. just wait for ICS to come

Of course it has do with the pixels also. My SGS II was way smoother than the Note even though it has been better with KL7 rom. And the difference between them is that the Note has three times more pixels wich the higher clocked CPU cant make up to. And SE are known to have on of the fastest launchers of all the Android makers. Much quicker than Touchwiz

Could be. The strangest thing is that MOST other launchers I've tried are worse and lag. Examples are ADW Launcher, Go Launcher and even the Ice Cream Sandwich Launcher...
The ONLY launcher that runs quite well is Launcher Pro Plus which runs slightly quicker than the stock touchwiz.
When trying Windows 7 Launcher it didn't work period, the home screen shakes up/down when trying to scroll...
Hopefully the next update should fix my problems. I am hoping Ice Cream Sandwich will resolve ALL my issues!

Thanks for backing me up. I fully agree 100% that Gingerbread has NOT been properly optimized to make full use of the Note, unfortunately...
The Note was made for ICS and as you also mentioned I hope ICS gives us an even better and faster Note.

That doesn't answer my question. If the Note is faulty then why doesn't everyone have the problem?

Try rocet rom defosnappy like sg2 freeze apps u dont need wifi sharing etc

Because people doesn't see a problem on the same issues or doesn't have noticed at all custom brightness on high never used the phone on low light places. Never played a dark video, using Samsung wallpaper. Never where on forums to read about the problems. My phone didn't have a pink spot on camera till I headed about it and reproduced low light with white paper on macro shot, and there was a pink spot, used flash on same pic no pink spot same conditions. Simple if you don't know it isn't there

Coming from the gtab 10.1, adw launcher was recommended to get rid of slight home screen lag, which it did.
So I threw up adw launcher on my note, and it is definitely slower than stock twlauncher.
Kinda strange.

Well, adding more RAM won't make it more responsive, and it is already running the fastest dual core SoC on the market. So spec wise there is not much Samsung can do. Maybe in a few months when quad core SoC becomes mainstream it will release a Note 2 with quad core SoC.
My dad has a Note and I do feel that my Galaxy Nexus is more responsive. Given that the resolutions on the two are similar, I think after the ICS update the Note will run smoother overall. That is of course assuming that the new version of TouchWiz won't screw the phone up.

I simply said it is not performing as well as it should and most people will agree with me.
You are the one who implied that my Note is faulty, not me.
There is nothing wrong with my Note apart from it's sluggish performance.
Many other users on this forum have opened up threads with regards to performance issues as well as methods of trying to speed the Note up.
If you go through the first few pages of the Galaxy Note General section you will see several threads with forums regarding input lag, slowness & other response issues...
As katyarevishal kindly explained ONE big reason for the lag/slow downs of the Note is due to the high pixel density of the screen.
Aside from the pixel density the Note's performance is let down because of Gingerbread and it's poor optimization.
Last but not least, WHY do you think so many people are counting down the days and looking forward to the release of Ice Cream Sandwich?
Simple, because they are hoping it will solve issues many of which I've already mentioned, mainly the lag and the fact it's not running as smoothly as it should.

80% which you have claimed have no issues = 111 individuals without problems.
This is not considering poll bias, skewed data, and other extra factors.
80% of Note users here on xda and 111 individuals who own a note here on xda are TWO different things.
So stop going around posting your canned 'it must be an individual problem, 80% of users love it, galaxy note is not faulty' responses and try to say something useful.

Well said aigoya, never did I say the Note was a bad device, only that it's performance was slightly sluggish and it's not performing as it should.
It's performance is being held back due to Gingerbread & will hopefully perform better in everyway when Ice Cream Sandwich is released, that's what many of us are hoping for.
I'm very happy with my Note in every other aspect.
As for Gaugerer I have no idea why he is having a go at me. We are here to discuss, help & trouble shoot, not troll and misguide others...

Occasional Stutter or Lag on the S4?

I've been hearing on some reviews that there are some moments that the Touchwiz UI will have an occasional stutter or lag. Do you guys think that downloading a different launcher, like Apix, will help solve that? Or will I have to go to the dark side of the phone and root it?
Also to some of you S3 owners out there, did installing CM10 or any other custom roms help remove any signs of lag or stuttering from the phone?

i noticed the same on mine... Its a GT-I9505...
My Nexus 4 is smoother....

I'm afraid to get the s4 because of that. Everyone swore to God that the note 2 was the most fluid device they ever touched with no frame rate drops. I recommend it to two friends, come back two weeks later to find both of their phones a lag fest. There might've been some user error there, they both had 2 or 3 weird apps installed, and I attempted to diagnose the problem but alas the lag remained, with and without apex. It was kinda embarrassing
for me when they both went in to trade their note 2's for an iPhone 5, because of the horrendous lag they suffered.
I say all that because I potentially see that happening here again, especially with touchwiz now BEYOND bloated with features. Not to mention the phone probably isn't optimized for snapdragon the way it is for exynos...
Don't get me wrong I love sammy phones, I think they're incredible as I'm still rocking the s2. I just have a hard time recommending them to people because of the horrible experiences a regular user faces without rooting and throwing an aosp rom on. And it's not like I can freely suggest nexus phones as the nexus 4 is exclusive to gsm (most my friends are on Verizon/Sprint) and most don't like the idea of paying off contract.
Anywho I rambled a bit. Long story short, I'm the biggest Samsung advocate in the world but even I'm skeptical of getting the s4 because of performance drops such as the ones mentioned

Did you ever try to install a custom rom for any of those devices? The only smart phone I've owned was a Samsung Infuse (The little brother of the S2) and the lag on that phone was terrible, despite the amount of roms I've put on it.

I have seen lag in the widget drawer, first time when you try to swipe to a different page in the widget drawer. Seems like 4.2 update have broken a few things in terms of smoothness.

I still have the Droid Charge, the Infuse's ugly brother on Verizon. They both use galaxy S hardware in the age of the S II, and Samsung didn't really give a crap about them software wise. I remember when the Charge got the gingerbread update there was a line that read something like this in the source:
/*This is a temporary piece of crappy code that I was forced to write as I did not figure
out how to properly use the driver in the system. Please resist the temptation of ever using
this code in a good Samsung phone. I will remove this code as soon as I figure out the correct
way of using the driver*/
The old hardware and the bad development are likely the problems. We did just get an OTA update a couple of weeks ago that fixed a lot of lag, though. Maybe it was that guy's driver, who knows.

It's an existing feature in Samsung phones called S-lag.
So how's the dialer? Does it still open for 3 secs?

I read somewhere that the lag is not the devices themselves but more on Android's native coding (how it was built ground up). Android works like a computer and differences are the way it utilizes the CPU/GPU. For example, when you are browsing and click on something on iOS, it stops everything and performs new instructions right away. In Android, it still process last set of instructions.
So Android reduces the lag by brute force by (dual, quad core, more memory, GPU etc) whereas iOS, because of different coding they don't need to. Many apps on Android are really customized versions of Java. And didn't Steve Jobs eliminate Java because it is too slow/power consuming for Mobile?
Even Nexus devices lag. When you turn on the phone and start scrolling and browsing right away really fast there is some lag.

Note II with Nova on here, and zero lags (except if you unlock from deep sleep and immediately without waiting, like within 1 second or something, pull down the notification bar, there's a lag, but that's me being nitpicky here). I guess it's a snapdragon thing rather, I'm on N7100 international Note II. Can vouch for that anyways.

I feel like this will be fixed with updates.
A lot of them said it was in awkward apps.. the kind of apps you wouldn't expect to get lag.

On engadgets review, they say that the air view and air gestures seen to make the phone a lot more sluggish. So hopefully disabling one of those features will help speed it up.

Note 2 user chiming in. Not even mad about lag. There is no such thing as lag free. Show me proof if there is.
Also got an GS4 arriving tomorrow. Removing bloatware as soon as I gain root.

When I was trying out the note 2 at the att store I noticed that some of the transitions would stutter from time to time (getting inand out of the app drawer, notification pulll down stutter) When I was trying out the HTC One, the only lag slight lag I got was on the widget select screen. Everything was literally smooth and fluid, it was awesome! The only reason why I was sold to the S4 instead of the One was because of the power button and volume buttons being so flush in the casing. I would have to slide my finger across the top just to pinpoint the power button which was very annoying and so I was thinking of avoiding the One. And I honestly like the design of the S4 more. But even the slightest lag on the S4 will deter me away from it, if it is constantly happening that is.

i'm not sure why some of u have lag or stutter on N2
i only have stutter on the notification drawer if i have a looot of notifications

Have you noticed some lags on the stock browser app? It seems there are some issues with pinch-in/out.

Does the Galaxy Note 3 have S-lag standard?

As a big Samsung smartphone fan, I was hugely disappointed with the S4. Micro stutters and lag EVERYWHERE it drove me crazy.
I was really REALLY hoping the Note 3 with the S800 powerhouse will remedy the lag, according to the many videos so far of the device it seems crazy but I can still see some micro stuttering going on. WTF Samsung!?

It's a good question actually. The SGS4 lagged with its initial release s/w. From what I've heard its improved over time but still has some lag in certain areas. The SGS4 (and now the N3) have new sensors tied to new functionality that requires the phone to always be anticipating an action. Like someone said above, 3GB of RAM should help with the additional workload. That and Samsung's had some time to refine the s/w that was first launched in April. The SGS3 had issues that were fixed in the N2 so I'd expect/hope history repeats itself.

It was excellent, yes. It got even better when I loaded a debloated ROM on it. Only reason I didn't leave TW altogether was I needed wi-fi calling. AOSP was by far the smoothest ROM. Ideally for those of us who don't need or want S-bloat they'd release a non Spen Note 3 equivalent GP Edition.

Running Miui on the s4 completely removes the lag. Hoping the note3 will also get Miui like the note 2 did. Touchwiz will always lag imo.

I've just bought the Note 3, and there's plenty of s-lag. I'm very disappointed with the device and want to swap it for the Blackberry Z30.

Yeah, this post makes sense... When I experience lag, I too complain in forums and jump ship to blackberry.

That's why I went getting a Galaxy Note 1 in my hand now when waiting for my GN3.
In this kind of " training", I am sure that I will be very satisfied with the speed of GN3..........GN1 is just soooooooooooooooo lag. Freeze itself once or twice a day....

The micro stutter is still there. For me, it's very annoying because the browser suffers from it (and I spend a lot of time in the browser). I've tried both Chrome and the ASAP browsers. The latter is slightly better, but it's still there and still very annoying. I understand it's subjective and does not bother everyone the same way, but for me it completely destroys the user experience.
Here's one way to see the stutter:
1. Open theverge.com in desktop mode.
2. Hover the s-pen at the bottom of the page (results in page slowly scrolling down).
3. Observe stutters (occurs intermittently, usually when scrolling sections in the page that contain images).
4. Do the same thing to scroll up once you've reached the bottom (I.e. hover the s-pen at the top of the page to scroll slowly upwards).
5. Observe the intermittent stutters.
Very bad user experience. Inexcusable considering the hardware. I for one am very disappointed.

My friend u need an iPhone.you will fit right in with rest of ur Hurd.

You recommend him get an iPhone because?.. Oh that's right it doesn't lag even with buggy websites. Sammy needs to work out some kinks with their over bloated touchwiz nonsense. I was going to give the note 3 a go. Then I heard people complaining of lag similar to the s4 (which I returned because of lag) now I've decided against buying one. I wanted that big 1080p screen so bad but I just can't deal with constant stuttering and frame lag, it drives me nuts.
I myself will be sticking to my newly purchased Gold 5s and the Nexus 5 running stock KitKat when its released.

Don't use theverge.com for testing, their frontend code is terribly slow.

Do you have the exynos model? Because I just tried this in my note 3 S800 and didn't see any stutters. There was one micro stutter initially and then smooth sailing from there.

Did any body 9005 user feel some dealy occessionaly while making screen off by power button. Occessionly so you have to check it many time. Reply will be hit by thank button.

I know a lot of people say don't use theverge.com to test the device... but what I found strange is:
The iPhone does not have ANY problems with that website, 4, 4S or 5.
The Galaxy S3 both the dual core US snap version and quad core international exynos versions, My Nexus 4 and Note 2, do not have any problems with theverge.com desktop or any other website.
The real kicker is this, my HTC One had ZERO issues with theverge.com, either in the stock browser or chrome. It flies through that website like butter. The S4 which has the same but "better binned" AB S600 chipset grinds to a halt with that website and other graphic intense websites, even XDA desktop will bring the S4 to it's knees sometimes. To level the playing field, I installed chrome on both my S4 and HTC One, theverge.com desktop version flies on the HTC but grinds to a halt on the S4 using the same chipset and same browser. So what's going on here??!
My recently acquired LG G2 is running an s800 and is an absolute monster when it comes to web browsing. Probably the fastest and smoothest web browsing I've ever encountered. I'm really hopeful that the N3 will at least be on par with it when it comes to a simple task like web browsing. Crossing my fingers, from what I've read so far I'm not holding my breath.

Galaxy S8 (European Exynos) - performance - scroll stuttering

Hi,
I'm really disappointed, I got my brand new s8 yesterday, and it looks and feels amazing like really really great.
Sadely it stutters a lot after a few swipes scrolling down in many apps, most disappointing were Instagram and Fenix, two perfectly smooth apps on my Pixel.
Is my device defective? What's your experience?

Instagram feels fine while scrolling ... even fast scrolling is good.
Maybe your Inet connection bandwidth?

My s8 stutters. I have no lag in instagram. Samsung browser lags a lot, also apparant on xda-dev forum site. My s7 edge never stuttered, it's buttery smooth. Both devices are Exynos. I am contemplating about returning it and sticking to my galaxy s7 edge. Batterylife also is worse than my s7 edge. On my s7 edge, I averaged at around 1000-1500mAh used for the battery. On my s8, I averaged at around 800-900mAh....
My phone is always warm, Android System is also quite high at about 10% when the display is at 40%. I am not happy with the S8. My s7 edge is much louder with dualspeakermod as well. The s8 has a very very weak earpiece speaker, so dualspeakermod won't be amazing at all.
Rear-facing camera favours retaining highlights on the s8. On the s7 edge it always wants to up the shadows. S8 camera has less noise but it's nothing special compared to my s7 edge.
Front facing camera is nice on the s8...but the autofocus is a pain in the ass. On the s7 edge, focus is always perfect due to fixed focus. On s7 edge, sometimes it needs refocus and can result in blurred image....

I got a 500Mb fiber and my Pixel on the same wifi scrolls smoothly anyway.
Wish it could be a simple fix like that ^^

Wow looks like you have much more complaints than I do, anyway I didn't test the phone further, smooth scrolling is one on my most wanted feature ; so I stopped digging deeper.
Why no reviewer did notice this stuff though?
I remember it was the same with iPhone 7 stuttering everywhere (10.3 greatly improved that recently, but too late).

Are you doing a transfer from old phone to S8?
Sometimes installing apps fresh is best. Also double check your settings.
I usually use Nova Launcher so will see what the stock launcher is like for a day or two and then decide if Nova will be better.

I did a transfer first and then two factory reset installs (only installing instagram and fenix) because I couldn't believe it
I wonder if it's not an Exynos only problem, I suspect Samsung might have optimized the snapdragon / US version much more than the European one; US market is way more important I guess.
Any clue about that?

I have the US Verizon variant and mine lags a lot. Tons of jank when simply pulling down the Notification Shade. Very disappointed. Doesn't matter whether I run the TW or GN launchers; both do the same thing. For having a SnapDragon 835 and a truckload of RAM, I expected it to be very smooth. I've tried turning down the display to just HD and that didn't make any difference at all.

I have a US GS8 on VZW and I actually feel this is the smoothest device I've ever used. I'm coming (back to Android after a mini break) from an iPhone 7 Plus and in some places the GS8 is smoother and more fluid than the iPhone. It's way better than what Android used to be.
Maybe there's an app or something running in the background?

I thought that too but this did it right out of the box before I even started loading apps. I'd love to figure out what's wrong. Considered doing an FDR just for the sake of doing it before I get too comfortable with the initial setup, as I know I'm lazy and will put it off. I mean could I have a CPU disabled or something? I guess I could contact Samsung support but I'm assuming they are going to be swamped for the next couple of weeks... but need an answer before my return window comes up.

As I said, I factory reset two times, only installing instagram and fenix after initial setup and without modifying any option. No luck
Maybe I got a defective unit.

Because everyone configures their phone differently and the likely cause of these random issues isn't the phone it's some combination of user specific apps and settings.

I remember a few years ago when the note 5 was released. Boy did that phone lag, it was unbelievable. The thing is not many people would notice it and like you I use fenix and talon for Twitter and if a phone lags on these 2 apps it's glaringly obvious for me. Please let me know how you get on with this as was hoping to get a s8 from work.

Please read my posts, I did factory reset the phone two times only installing instagram and fenix, not changing any settings.
Definitely not user specific, I wish it could be though, easy fix...

Guess you're right, I'm quite sure the stutter is caused by Samsung software trying too hard to smooth the scrolling.
Because to get the stutter I must scroll without pause, if I pause and scroll again things stay smooth.
I really hope they fix that soon but what if they don't and I can't return the phone...
PS: it tooks Apple 6 months to fix the same kind of issues on the iPhone 7.

UK s8. Upgraded from a Google Pixel and it feels like a downgrade in terms of speed and smoothness. Not buttery at all. Stutters everywhere!
Seriously, Samsung? Don't they test these things?
