Need assistance w/ DIY A500 Repair (Power Button) *ACER FIXED IT!* - Acer Iconia A500

I'll have to take pictures later when I get home so you all can have a better understanding of my problem.
My power button stopped working two days ago (no click or reaction when pressed). I never filled out any of my warranty things & I have no idea what my serial number is. So any who, I opened up my tablet and carefully disconnected the battery and all necessary connectors so that I could see what was causing the button issue. Turns out, the power button switch had disconnected from the circuit board.
I went and bought a soldering iron but after a few attempts I realized that I was going to have to go a different route. The chip itself has five connections to the board and these connections are under the chip itself. What is the best way for me to reconnect this chip to the board? I'm thinking of purchasing some thermal adhesive and seeing if that does the trick since without this part I'm looking at a large paperweight. Any suggestions?

I'd like to help, but without seeing how it actually is I'm having trouble with that. And I don't feel comfortable opening my tablet without a good reason.
Could you perhaps supply a few pictures?

Added two pictures, sorry if they're not clear enough. The whole thing is pretty much trash unless I'm able to repair this or get it to someone that can. People should be aware when they push their power button super hard - doesn't have anything keeping the chip firming in place.

Thermal adhesive might not be the best idea. It's primarily meant for conducting heat, and thus it seems most thermal adhesives are somewhat electrically conductive. In other words you could possibly create a short and fry something.
In theory I agree that using something glue-like substance would be the easiest way to go, but you need to find something that is not electrically conductive in the least and when it dries/cools down that it hard. If it becomes a soft blob you'll find you're still having issues with the switch staying down and connected.
I'd personally still go with soldering it down and then applying something to ensure it stays there, but you'd need a very tiny soldering iron -- like e.g. one used by clocksmiths -- and steady hands. And preferably some experience with soldering something so small.

Your eleven digit serial # is inside the cover of the sd card door, a one year warranty is on all acer tablet, if they cannot fix it they would have given you a new one from the place of purches mine would be staples, i call acer usa all the time, i call today and ask if the 500 will get ICS the answer was when google release the code they will..

I would suggest soldering it, its the only thing that will hold the switch in place long term. They do make a conductive adhesive for electronic circuit board repair, but it is more for repairing boards, not really for attaching components. It wouldn't be too hard to solder it back on, just get some solder wick and remove all the old solder first, then re-attach the switch with new solder. If you don't feel comfortable doing it, take it to your local TV/Electronic repair shop. Since its already out and all they would have to do is re-solder the switch, it probably wouldn't cost too much to do. Although what the other poster said about returning it to Acer to have them repair it is probably the smartest answer. If it does have a year warranty, then that's what I'd do.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Ill get acer on the horn tomorrow to try and see what's what.

I believe once you've opened up your tablet, your Acer warranty is VOID. Sorry.

Any insight as far as how they would know? I called acer last night and was given all the info as far as how to send it back. Hopefully if they notice I did some tinkering, they'll just fix it anyway and bill me or something. I definitely regret panicking about this situation & opening it up when that was totally unnecessary.

There should be a tamper-evident seal underneath the MicroSD/SIM compartment door. It rips when you disassemble the tablet. It is a little black square sticker that says something like "Warranty void if broken" (I dunno exactly, I already removed mine completely). It's hard to miss.

I couldn't find it, looked for a while. I'm going to be sending mine off today. Hopefully they'll just fix or replace it. If they send it back to me unrepaired it's not the end of the world. I'll just count it as a loss and buy a new tab early next year. Definitely wouldn't be another Acer though; that power button connection isn't nearly as sturdy as it should be.

UPDATE:
I sent my device to the Acer location in Temple, TX and received an email from them this morning that it has been repaired and that I will soon be emailed with a tracking number. Hopefully that's true and not just a template response though.

well for those worried about the power button getting lose my electronics firm have used a hich tech substance called hot glue to hold things in place

Good to hear that.

Did you root, flash any roms on your tablet? I was just wondering because mine has the same problem, power button not working, and may have to send it back to acer for repair. I am a little worried that they would find out that I flashed a rom and would not repair it. Thanks

Yep it was modded in every way. Rooted, Thor rom on it etc. Thing is, they probably didn't know any of that until they'd already fixed the power button. I'll report back on Wednesday as to whether or not they actually fixed it or if they replaced it with another.

Ok, thanks for letting me know, sounds exactly like mine. Have to give the Costco concierge service a call tomorrow to see what they say, whether to send it to acer or get another one through Costco.

If I were you, I'd try Costco first. Especially if you're like me in the way that I HAAAAATE having to wait for things to come. They've had it since last Wednesday and I'll be refreshing the fedex tracking website like 100 times per minute looking for updates.

Gonna go pick it up from fedex once I get off work. Will report back as far as the repair status/replacement. If they did repair or replace, that's a very good showing on Acer's end as far as their product support since I opened the unit and had it rooted.

Ok, looking forward to your reply. I called costco and apparently I was past the return period so I have to send it to acer for repair. Just out of curiosity, did they charge you for anything?

[REPAIR]HD2 random rebooting

Ok, i've given up.
My HD2 is driving me nuts, i've been taking it for granted for a long time, but i've decided to send my HD2 for repairs.
Maybe some users can identify themselfs in my symptoms and perhaps go for a repair as well. I'll try to keep you guys up to date on this situation.
Status:
18/10 - Received my repair ticket. Scheduled pickup tomorrow between 08:00 and 10:00 GMT +1.
19/10 - Phone got picked up by courier service, 8.30AM in the morning.
20/10 till 25/10 - No change in status and/or picked up!
26/10 - Decided to call after a prolonged status update. Summary of conversation: "Yes, everything is fine. No the status hasn't been changed, but you should receive your phone back in about a total of 2 weeks, so somewhere next week i guess."
27-10 till 2/11 -- No change in status and message.
3-11 - Received a package back with my repaired phone! Results: Boardswap, phone shutdown while diagnosing at the repair center. They even replaced my camera lens!
Total repair time due: 15 days
The following below describes the problems that occur (allot!), perhaps you can identify yourself in this as well.
Issie:
- Phone restarts (randomly) and holds at the HTC boot logo when back(bottom)cover feels warm-to-hot.
- Phone reboots when back(bottom)cover is warm, but not hot enough to hang at HTC boot logo, but soon after booting to Windows mobile, the device may reboot again.
Happens when:
- Browsing Internet (3G/HSDPA)
- Listening to Music (through SD card)
- Playing a game
- Having a (long) phone call the device
(temporarily) fix for issue:
1. Do a ‘Battery-Pull’ (extracting the battery) which shuts down the device.
2. Let it cool down for a couple of minutes until the back(bottom)part doesn’t feel warm enough anymore.
3. Re-insert battery, and restart phone.
4. If cooled down enough, the phone will restart correctly when powering up the device, until issue happens again, where step 1 needs to be done again.
The above mentioned issue don’t happen when the devise isn’t put under ‘load’ (I.e: use applications/browse(the web)/music etc). Putting the phone in sleep/standby or just sending a text message will not reboot the phone.
Tried the following official fixes:
- Hard Resetting the device > Issue remains.
- Updating to a new (official) ROM (RUU_Leo_HTC_NLD_1.48.404.2_Radio_Signed_15.28.50.07U_2.05.51.05_2_Ship.exe )
> Issue remains, even after a Hard reset with above noted ROM.
- Formatting and/or removing the SD card from the Device > Issue remains.
Tried the XDA fixes:
- Different Radios: Any radio in the official HD2 Radio topic
- Many different Roms
- Formatted the SD card, tried a different one, and even None.
Concluding:
Seeing to have tried all options relating to a software issue, I think this might be a hardware issue.
Contact with HTC:
Having sent some messages over with HTC they sent me this last message:

(Tech)) Close Pending Hi Maseo, Thank you for letting me know. It really sounds like a hardware issue. Please let us know if you need anything else. Kind Regards, 2010/10/18 12:42:46
I have the exact same problem and tomorrow it is going to the repair center. Unfortunately I have a crack in the digitizer, I hope they don't use it as pretext to charge me extra!

My screen is still in mint condition, only thing that cracked if my camera-glass due to a bump against my table at home.. But more then that it's nothing.
I've noticed more people having the problem, so i thought maybe more people have my issues as well and could go for a repair after seeing this topic.

They will blame your problem on humidity in the device after the camera glass cracked. Did you change the camera-glass? I suggest you do that before you send it for repair otherwise you have to pay for the repairs as it does not fall under warranty (check on ebay for camera glass lens).
I think we're both in the same pickle:/
I am crossing my fingers they won't charge me.

I haven't. And a device breaking down from the camera end is highly unlikely.
It's impossible for me to replace it now as it's being picked up tomorrow morning. If they have to repair it, so be it. As long as it's not a outrageous high price..
You got experience in this, them blaming me in case of humidity, or you just guessing?

After speaking with their customer rep they pointed out to me that it is possible that the device malfunctions because of cracks leading to humidity and temperature problems. And that is not under warranty.
If your camera lens is cracked, it is easy for them to blame it on humidity due to the crack. This is a possible scenario, I can't predict but if we learned anything from repair under warranty, companies will to blame it on the customer before they fix it under warranty.
My advice to you is to cancel the pick up and reschedule another one later, go to ebay and buy a second hand glass lens and glue it yourself. It cost you less than 5$ to do that. Better than relying on their repair and end up paying hundreds of dollars. This way you eliminate the excuse of them blaming the defect on you.

Sounds plausible, but that wouldn't make sense in the way the device is manufactured. The CPU/GPU/Radio base i at the bottom. Any malfunctioning due to possible humidity in the camera would only lead to a malfunctioning camera, and that's not the case at this time.
Given, if i had more time i might have placed it, but i'm not in the occasion to do that right now.
I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed, im more afraid they'll go at you for a broken digitizer..

Double check this. Pull your battery and make sure that none of the pins are bent and touching each other. This has caused some issues, but not exactly the one you're describing but it can't hurt to check. If they are bent, straighten them out and see if the issue is resolved.

Thanks, but to no avail.
Those 3 pins were straight and sitting nice and snuggly against each other.
i also have a battery problem battery seems to be dying. under 30% phone becomes unstable. also sometimes doenst want to load or boot.
last 2 must be a connector problem (indeed it must be. put battery in without taking care to put contact points in the 3 little squares then the battery doesnt work)
ive mailed custumer service, it must be part of the warranty so i want a new battery

My problem has nothing to do with the battery at all.. don't hijack this topic for something un-related..
Day 2:
Phone is still enroute to HTC Service Center according to the Servicetracker..
how long does it take to deliver a phone i wonder..
My experience with HTC customer services
In the case of my HD2 (same symptoms):
Went back to Standard ROM/Radio/Bootloader Friday 17/09/10
Confirmed problem still existed on standard software 17/09/10
Called HTC customer services 18/09/10
Collection booked for Monday 20/09/10
Confirmation email received that phone had been received 21/09/10
Status changed from "Received your phone" to "Repairing your phone" 03/10/10
Status changed to "Awaiting despatch" (or something similar) 03/10/10
Received email confirmation phone was being shipped back to me 04/10/10
Received phone back with new IMEI (presume new motherboard) 05/10/10
All in all, I was without the phone for 2 weeks but I have no complaints about the service at all. A message telling me what they'd done to fix the problem would've been nice, but it's fixed and working perfectly so I'll forgive them for that.
After a week without my HD2, my spare phone was really annoying me due to it's lack of capability (HTC StrTrk) so I bought an Orange San Francisco, used it until my HD2 came back then sold it to someone I work with for what I paid for it.
Yeah, the fun thing is, is that the service center is almost figuratively around the corner, still they said it could take up to 2 weeks though.
I'm gonna get a Nokia 5800 as a lend-phone from a friend of mine.
I was looking into getting the Desire HD possibly this friday, but that's just too much as next to having the HD2, haha!
maseo im not trying to hijack anything!
maybe your sister if she looks nice.. so pls dont use that tone!
seems to be a battery issue with your phone so it seems with mine... it could also be a connector/motherboard problem so my post was on topic.
i submitted a problem to tech support and got a ticket they want me to call cust service to check my phone, i dont want to lose it for at least 2 weeks.
i want to get a new battery! so ill try to get that.
(also you reply a lot... do you want your posts to go up or something? )

Don't want to keep bumping it without no-reason, im just replying that's all ;-)
If it were a battery problem it would show other symptoms, ditto for the connector. Im more confident it's more hardware related, but to be precise what, i don't know.
A new battery is quite inexpensive, why don't you just get one? Saves you the hassle of getting (or trying to get) a new one through HTC.
Day 3 that my phone is underway, takes ages for a small trip by courier apparently ?

took my epic apart

so i took my epic apart today, thinking i was going to be able to tighten the slider..but didnt lol...i might be really wrong, but the thing that makes it slide back and forth is a spring mechanism thing, theres 2 ,one for each side.each consists of 4 straight/maybe 1/2 or 3/4 of an inch pins that r like springs.when u slide it back and forth 2 pull it and 2 stretch/vice versa (opening n closing it) ..i was gonna take some pics but dont own a camera and totally forgot that the phone wasnt gonna be usable during that time to take pics of itself LOL. im not sure, but i believe if it ever needs to be replaced, the techs would replace the whole panel thats attached with the slider/springs because the rotary spring thing is attached to it with (i forgot the name, but they look like a screw/nail with flat ends on both sides) .just thought id post this on here since alot of people were asking if it was easy to tighten it. sorry for making a useless thread. ..
ps: my phones slider's kinda good, but the upper left side(to the left of the spring logo) has a lil play,id say the thickness of a dime or quarter, around there.not much, but its annoying...this is the 2nd epic(i sent the other one cause it got way too loose )
..oh and i tried to tighten it myself cause i dont have insurance lol.id like to find a cool tech guy that'll do side-jobs for cheap..lol
Apparently sprints new insurance policy for everyone covers hardware but I'm not sure

Sprint has to send these phones back to Samsung to fix these kinds of issues as it requires a specialized assembly jig. IIRC Assurion is still sending out new replacements as it is economically unfeasible to fix them unless they got a ****load of bad units to fix. Most people just pony up the $100 and say they lost them...

If you need it repaired, $35 at a Sprint repair center. When we harvest Epics, we keep the entire phone sans circuit board, making it a simple job to pop your board into the housing. If we would be out of harvested parts, we would order a phone for you for the same $35!
Somewhat related:
How do you get the connection from the screen to the mainboard reconnected? My epic got forced past its closed point and the ribbon cable popped out. The phone was exceptionally easy to get apart to that point but I cant seem to figure out how to get the damn ribbon cable back in the connector.
Edit:
Nevermind, I was taking a real good look at the area where the ribbon cable connects to the screen and I could see where the cable go ripped clean off. Definitely going to have to take it in for sure.
Yeahh for a while I was trippin. It was put back together.turn it on and no signal...open it up again and I guess I hadunplugged this lil cable type of thing.lol...I was like "****kkk " lol...so wait.its 35 dollars to get it fixed? Even if I don't have insurance??

If you have TEP, you should not have to pay this, correct? (given its is due to regular 'wear and tear', as the policy states on the website)
My first epic developed a really annoying purple line of pixels across the bottom 1-2 lines, which IS very small, but VERY annoying... in my experience w/ LCD TV/monitors, this is probably that cable either being disconnected or damaged, my best guess. Took it to my sprint store, and the tech in the back said it would cost me 35 to 'fix it' (replace either everything but the board/replace). Never made a ticket for it, even though I had to wait an hour... guy on phone tech support said that made no sense, as with TEP, its either free, or its thru insurance. I think the tech was just being a **** because he did not want to do this complicated job at 430 in the afternoon (/s). He told me it was a 'cosmetic flaw, and wasnt covered... I ended up getting another store to ship me a replacement, that FC'ed on EVERYTHING, so I took it back to store #1, and they wanted to order me yet another replacement, I said **** that, got the manager, and he gave me a new one, sans charger and other crap in box. So what is your understanding of the policy??? The policy on the internet, is surprisingly short, and literally says TEP covers 'normal wear and tear', so if I scratch the chrome like side bit, they should replace the whole thing for free? This is exactly what is implied, and theres no mention of any 'cosmetic' clause... just some 'tech' (no offense, directed at said tech) with a stick up his ass. I have never had any problem with this stuff... always awesome service... better than I would expect.. so are you guys told to be sticklers with the epic and maybe evo because of cost???? Just odd... trying to tell me a broken display panel is cosmetic... lol... what a ****tard. Anyways, the manager just said he would 'talk to him'... just wondering if it meant he was saying 'what the **** are you doing', or 'that customer is a ****, dont worry about it'... Not my fault Sammy made it so you cant just fix everything on site...

Updated Power Button Board?

A few weeks ago my TPT fell victim to the faulty power button issue that seems to plague these devices. Being the DIY type, I soldered the button back on myself. After a few weeks, my repair job seems to be wearing out so I searched for where I could find a replacement part from Lenovo. Seeing as I clearly voided my warranty I decided to just buy the whole board the power button and camera is mounted on and install it myself. I found the part number I needed to be 04W2155 by looking it up here. I called Lenovo's part dept. to get a quote (1-800-388-7080).
I entered the part number into the system and it says that the part number has been replaced with another one, 063Y1860 and the quoted me $55.50, which seems reasonable. It seems that Lenovo actually designed an updated version of this board, probably to address the power button issue. I'll be ordering the replacement soon and will be sure to post a comparison.
I'll be interested in that. I'm unlikely to let Lenovo repair anything for me and will be wanting to diy it, too.
i have the updated board... it is the exact same but they put glue on it.
Gotta love Lenovo!
replaacreplaing
can someone post directions to reinstalling this item in the tpt, I have purchased it and am ready to upgrade...
Check the Lenovo forum. Detailed instructions there, and here, too. Search for profile d_lane on Lenovo. Can't remember if his handle is the same here.
I know this thread is semi dead, but I jumped through the hoops and ended up on hold forever with the option to exit the queue and get a call back.
It's been a week and no call back yet.
I guess I'll try to go on hold with them again and let it sit longer. I sat for almost an hour last time.
anyone have any luck getting this?
I got one towards the end of last year with no issues.

They are $108 now which is hardly worth it, but they are still available.
Has anyone ever figured out a replacement part for the switch itself? I know it isn't specific to this model, but no idea what it would even be called in order to find a new one.

I'm new here so I'm hoping somebody can help me. My kindle fire got wet about a week ago and stupid me the first thing I did was wipe it down and turn it on to make sure it still worked. It did at that time and still a few hours later although the battery had died. Upon recharging it no longer worked. First it was stuck in the yellow triangle mode...then alternated between that and the kindle fire logo. My computer would recognize it for a second then the kindle would reboot and it was gone. I researched for days and tried so many things and nothing worked. The sd card cannot be mounted, it's like it disappeared so I can even do anything via TWRP. NOW it is stuck in a total BLUE kindle fire logo boot and doesn't ever stop!
Have I destroyed my kindle or can it be fixed via the factory cable?
Please help me
I'm assuming it was fine before the water incident. Maybe send it back to Amazon and see what they think? You never know, they might exchange one for you.
Otherwise, you can always sell it on eBay as is, and might even get a good price for it. Just make sure the starting bid price is reasonable, as not many people are going to bid for it, unless they are technical people who reckon they can fix it up and resell it.
A factory cable is unlikely to fix it, as it is obviously a hardware problem. Maybe a short in circuits or something. Your biggest mistake was that you turned it on as soon as you wiped it down. How long was it in the water? If it had any water inside it at all, you should have shut it down completely and let it dry out somewhere with good air circulation for at least a day.
are you running ICS?

Yeah that's a valid question. If you drop the Kindle in water and it's running ICS, it can get damaged. The best water protection comes with Jellybean. Jellybean prevents the water from leaking in and messing up the code. smh.

Yeah I think you are right with the short circuit...and I realized my mistake directly after I did it It was only in the water a second. Embarrassingly my pool over-flowed while I was lying beside it. It flowed out onto my cellphone, my husbands cellphone and the kindle. I picked them all up immediately but water most def got inside...I'm sure of it
Yes, that is funny.
I asked because since i went to ICS if i use a USB charger for my droid i've been stuck in the same screen, in addition to having other charging issues. I was speculating the problem might not be water related but an unnoticed problem associated with charging (3.0)
I agree a short seems most likely, I was just looking for a possible alternative to check before sending it in with fingers crossed.
If you don't want to send it in, feel free to take it apart yourself and see if you can fix anything. Likely not, as the battery may have bust. There is an easy to follow guide on ifixit.com for taking apart a Kindle Fire.
Remember though, it voids the warranty, so I'd recommend just sending it to Amazon first.
If all else fails and you can ship to England. Then I want the motherboard
sent from my Gnex running Trinity kernel & Awesome's JB rom
My Paperwhite got wet and was still within Amazon's one year regular (didn't buy extended) warranty. I was honest with them and, even though water damage is not covered, they were nice enough to replace it anyway. I am long time Amazon Prime/Kindle Unlimited member and don't know if that swayed their decision, but go to their support website. It's worth a try! They are VERY nice. I did have to send mine to them, but they sent UPS return label, and I had replacement within 5 days!

[Q] A501. Can I boot with broken power button?

Hi,
The power button is broken on my Acer A501.
For 1 year I kept it going without rebooting. Plugin it to the wall would turn it on from deep sleep.
Now just messed up unplugging a usb thumb drive and the tablet frozen and discharged completely.
I can't find a way to force it to boot anymore.
Is the a way force it to boot without using the power button?
Any help would be very appreciated.
Thanks,
Francois

Hey Francois, the answer is no unfortunately. However, several people in the past have had the same issue, and basically they take the case apart and glue the PWR button back on. Should be some old threads in the Q & A which cover what they did to repair it.
Seems these tablets are starting to fall apart this year. Mine just hard bricked for it's final time last night. None of our good tools can get it back, and I'm one of the "BrickMasters":laugh:
If you were in Moscow, I would just let you change your mainboard, into my case (PWR button works)

Thank you Moscow Desire.
I don't have the pleasure to know Moscow yet, unfortunately.
I'm aware of the the button repair with glue or soldering, which is beyond my technical abilities. I do software, not hardware... I know I could get it repaired for $50 in USA, plus shipping, but that approaches the cost of a replacement tablet as prices have lowered a lot. The A501 was a great, awesome product 3 years ago, but its age starts to show...
Before sending for repair or thrashing it, I wanted confirmation it can't be jump started... Your answer confirms it is not possible.
I'll check with some more technically inclined friends to see if the can fix it.
Thanks,
Francois

Yeah, pretty much they just aren't worth the cost of repair. Heck, I think you can buy a working one for about $50 bucks anyhow.
But the glue method is pretty easy I think, if I remember right.
Here's a link to the service manual

But hey, if you're gonna thrash it, how about sending me it's mainboad?
My bootloader memory partition got corrupted beyond repair yesterday (my little girls entertainment).
I have an A701 (nice display, but rest of tablet is junk. No more Acer for me) Think I will got Sammy for the newer 10.1 model.

Thankd for the manual. I might give it a try, with some help.
Do anyone know if it could be booted up using a docking station? http://www.acer.ae/ac/en/AE/content/model/LC.DCK0A.001. I see a Power button on the remote control. Or directly via the dock pins, maybe shorting some?
Just checking.
Thanks for any info.

I have no idea. Docking stations never were that popular, at least not over here.
Good luck Mate!
