Where are all of the devs/roms gone? - Acer Iconia A500

When i first got my iconia, there were loads of roms, with many devs.
now there seems to be 2 vache and r-trip (thanks very much for your work BTW!)
what the hell happened to this tablet...why did MDJ, THor and Dexter have a girlie fight and leave?
Is the Iconia a fancy $500 paper weight?

where is that page?
?

There are 7 ROM threads on this first page right below this thread...???
Seems to me there are more ROMs than ever, and most importantly, they're finally (for the most part) stable.
How many ROMs are needed for one tablet?

I agree. There are still a few here and they all are nice. However, half cant use hdmi. I currently use Thor's and i love the hell out of it. HDMI works, its smooth and comes with some really cool extras. i wont change from thors until mdeejay shows up with the icecream ver. then it will be a toss up cuz i think they both make the ROMs im comfortable with.

Dear 4D3,
there are:
7 ROMs on the first page
1 more on tegraowners.com
6 more on tabletroms.com ( + 1 for A200)
Total 14....not enough?
....and what does your question has to do with Android development?

Which ROM are you raving/referring to above? Integraowners.com has a buttload.

First of all, I'll only go to the website that keeps getting mentioned when it's finally designed to properly display on a tablet browser (any tablet browser). As it stands now the website is like one giant horizontal toolbar nightmare. I don't even like going there on my desktop PC browser. Sorry, I'm a long-time web designer, and badly designed sites are a pet peeve...
Second, if you keep posting that website name, this thread is going to be closed/deleted like all the others have. Anything to do with that dev's website gets whiffed because he won't release his kernel source. Basically, that dev's username and/or website is a thread kiss of death on XDA.

Which is a damn shame, as he's a very smart guy but his attitude to community development sucks.
As for his website.... Horizontal scrolling? Really? Ugh!

I really appreciate everything he's done for Iconia owners, but his attitude/stance makes it difficult to defend him.

Yes, I will. I never said that I don't appreciate his work (except his website, which is horrible). Honestly though, if there was an alternative recovery available, I would be using it, but that would mostly be because I don't like CWM. I use Amon RA on my Evo 4G.
I'm a career network engineer, and for some reason the most gifted techies I've worked with have coincidentally been a$$holes. Maybe it's saying something about me that I still really liked every one of them...haha

Yes, they're called "prima donnas" , like most chefs, artists, etc.
If you've upgraded to his latest ver of CWM, you'll be hard pressed to find a better ver of CWM for any device.
I know the whole "but he doesn't release his source code" argument, but honestly I could care less if he does or not. I don't use his ROMs, but I do use CWM.
I guess I just don't get what all the fuss is about.
Either use his dev tools or don't, I just wish ppl would quit bringing it up and making a stink.

I tried an MiUi build on my HD2 and had fun with it. It's certainly a little different. For all the neat stuff it has, I got sick of all the apps being on the home screen.

CyanogenMod?

Is it possible for us to start working on a port of it now that we have a functional Clockwork Recovery from Koush?
Edit:
$100 currently pooled for the person who gets fully functional CyanogenMod working on the Tab. (T-Mobile)
If you'd like to make any other contributions to this pool, post it in this thread and we'll get a rough idea of how much money we can send someones way once they get this thing functional and easy to install.
Yep, go ahead and get started on it.
It's unlikely that CM6 will come to the Tab any time soon (if ever...), as they are JUST getting some early betas out for the SGS.
The work required to get it working on any new phone/tablet is immense, and therefor I doubt it'll come to the SGT simply because they don't have the time.... or the Tabs.
Well we have Clockwork and I believe we have the source (right?), so..
Money is a good motivator. I'm willing to donate $100 to the first person who gets a working beta of CM ported to the Tab.
Cyan 6 will be perfect for the Tab I will be the 1st Modify Cyan for an Android Tab.

yes thats the same way i am dealing with those individuals!
and i dont think it will be easy to port CM6.1 to the Tab because we would need to rewrite most of the apps because of the higher resolution!
Its gonna be a bit more difficult than porting over. Youll have to rewrite most of the xmls and completely redo a lot of the graphics.
To whoever ports it though, ill give you my cousin, a cat and a sandwich of your choice.

I dunno if straying away from the stock Rom is the best idea. Right now as we have it, everything works. Going AOSP will probably break everything. I think its best to take a stock Rom and modify it. I'd like if the menus were black rather then white, but that's just a themeing issue.

i dont know why people are thinking this will be crazy impossible. has anyone visited the viewsonic g tablet xda forum? you realize its a 10.1 in screen and its running cyanogenmod. i dont think it will be that hard to get it on, the real question is WHO will do. its possible and the screen size isnt an issue, just gotta find someone who actually owns this and wants to modify it. i actually like touchwiz, it works well. but the tab just needs to be optimized.

Its not a case of screen size, although that would be an issue with porting, its more like 'who on the CM team has a Galaxy device?' I havent heard of a release for any of the Galaxy devices (i dont check often but its usually big news if they expand the phones theyre working on)

Defy got CM7 Port

If the Defy can do it, why can't we? It has a locked bootloader too. I bet I sound pretty stupid because there is something I'm missing, but oh well...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033654
A quick glance says that they're using update.zip files to clobber /system, so they're not touching the bootloader. So this should be doable, although I believe that our CWM could use some more work.

Yeh, you are probably right. And as next step would be understanding the current cm7 defy port and maybe try do to the same thing using cm7 harmony as a base.
I could try doing it, I'm a quite experienced java developer (6+ years) and wouldn't have problems learning it BUT, as I already sold my old Nexus One, Atrix is my current phone and I don't wanna risk it... =/

Bootloader was too late

Hi
Does anyone else think that the bootloader release is just a bit too late. All our great devs have left just before it was released. Reason I say this is because the unlock has been around for a week and all I have seen is DooM making kernels. Z hasn't been seen and as for the others well. They moved on. Same for all our better cooks. What are other peoples views on this.

Nope, to me, I consider it as an exclusive treat for the loyal X10 users.

I agree, I havent even bothered unlocking mine as the old method is fine until something else worthwhile is released. I doubt we will get anything we dont already have.
Perhaps an updated kernel eventually but i cant see anything useful for me.
The X10 has got old fast, there are so many better phones out there now. Ive never been that happy with the x10. The features I find it has arent overly great. Its huge 8mp camera blows compared to other phones. Far to slow and annoying to focus. I use to use it alot when I first got it but dont ever touch it now.
I doubt the devs will be able to squeez much more out of there roms.

i think some people expect too much from the bootloader unlock.
The bootloader bypass gave us custom kernels and was a big step.
The bootloader unlock doesnt really give us much extra in addition to the bootloader bypass apart from a quicker startup time. Those people who just think bootloader unlock automatically gives us the ability to do 16m colours or proper multitouch are simply ill informed as to how this stuff works.

I saw this same thing on MoDaCo.
I look at it this way:
If you have unlocked your bootloader, then you don't have to worry about losing xrec when you flash a faulty ROM/kernel. Since it's built right in, it's there to stay. That way you don't have to deal with going back to stock, rooting, and restoring backup from there.
Made testing things a bit easier, if anything.
Let's all support our devs in slow times. And if at all else, come together as a community, learn to cook, mod, dev, and things will pick up.
And as always: this is done for free* by regular, everyday, normal people such as yourselves that do this in their free time. I'm grateful for that.
*only exception is ad clicking to get to WB files via adf.ly due to his financial contraints (but it's time paid, not money)

Welcome to the world of Linux my friend, there's no need keep saying the same thing again, and again. Just keep up the good work!
@DikeJ, FreeXperia is currently working on kernel 2.6.32 for a long time now(since before the bootloader was unlocked). About MT, search around the forums, AFAIK, Z said X10's digitizer supports MT, it's just that the phone is released on Android 1.6, which don't support MT.
@Hzu, good to hear. I know about creating 2.6.32, but about MT didn't heard anything before - very good info. So it's just a time to reborn again our X10's .
BTW - I will create topic on Devs forum - it will be gaming and the fastest ROM for X10 - I have hope . Stay tuned, after 21st .

Security perposes. Someone tried hacking one of my account but my software caught them. Shame I couldn't find them though. Anyways also I am a big fan of the 1st battalion blackwatch regiment. One of the hardest army regiments in the UK. Hey, gotta love the Scottish man.
-Pilot-
Please don't take that the wrong way. I think you lot are nuts but sound as f**k. Got a few mates from that regiment and they are hard as nails. Scary too
Anyways also it goes with my lifestyle too. I don't sleep due to health issues so I am a bit nocturnal you could say but I'm always on the lookout. Black-night, Watch-eyes open and 89 my yr of birth. Hope that helps you understand dude.

ICS already on Xoom! Why don't we have it yet???

Check it out! Forward to 12:00 to see it in action
This has already been posted twice... and the most obvious answer is that it isn't ready yet. Just because you see ICS running and one feature demonstrated doesn't mean the entire thing is ready yet.
Nice to see it running on a Xoom...
Surprised we don't have a leaked beta version of ICS for Xoom.
I'd rather wait for a proper version from the Tiamat guys than have a half working leaked version.

Don't get me wrong, I can't wait for the Tiamat ROM, I just would love to see some in depth ICS videos or be able to play around with it myself on the Xoom. Just to get a taste, even if it is an early build
I ain't trippin' 'bout waitin' for this update. My XOOM runs as I expected it to back in February (and it's about time, too.) The only things that ICS offers that I care about are resizeable Widgets (I hope they mean it this time) and the ability to take screenshots and hide apps without root access.
I can get almost everything done on my XOOM that I planned to do when I bought it. It will be nice to have as long as they don't screw it up. I don't care if it comes.

If you want a taste of ICS, then DL the latest version of ADW Launcher EX. It is just like the ICS launcher (from what I've seen) and it takes a bit of getting used to. A bit too easy to create folders IMO as you move app icons around. Resizable widgets, of course (not new for ADW). Lots of customizations possible.

Yea, we wouldn't want another rushed for the Xoom like honeycomb was with 3.0, 3.0.1, etc. lol
So, yea I don't mind waiting a bit til they get some of the bugs out.

Scrollable widgets kinda suck on ADW launcher EX on my xoom. It's hard to flick and scroll my gmail widget. It's worse when I set gestures to open/close the dock. Everytime I try to scroll widgets up or down, the dock opens or close and I can't even scroll the widget properly.
Not everyone has the time or will to dig through the thread list to check whether or not a particular topic has been discussed already before starting a new thread on the same topic. Besides, let the mods moderate reposts of essentially the same topic. That is why they exist, after all (among many other responsibilities, of course)!
With that out of the way, I share in the OP's eagerness for an ICS port and find it a bit disconcerting that there's no port for my tablet the Xoom, of course nor my phone, the T-Mob GSII. I applaud the devs who are currently toiling away to bring ICS to the Xoom and would definitely buy one of them a round of beer for their hard work with the only catch being since I don't have Paypal (long story) they'd have to be in the NYC area

Motorola already confirmed it will come, just give them time. Those things don't happen overnight, as they have to take the source code, add the hardware drivers (different interface with the kernel than previous versions), add their branded software, and then test everything to ensure it works. It will come, both from the community AND Motorola.

If you don't have the "time or will" to search before you post, then don't post...IMO.

I agree. When Motorola puts out their update, it will be even easier for xda development to make something nice. I am not going to get on people who aren't getting anything out of it. I don't expect free stuff just because someone is working on it anyway.

If we're going to start telling people how to post, why not tell people how to reply?

When I made my initial post about the OP posting this when it was already mentioned twice, both threads where the ICS video were posted were on page 1. Wasn't a lot of searching to be done to see them... I can understand if a related thread is deep or a few pages away, but page one reeks of laziness.

I think everyone here knows "how to post." You hit the reply, quote, or new thread button. Pretty simple. What you post is a different story. The rules are there for a reason.
As for the other stuff in your reply, I have no clue as to what you were trying to say, but one thing I do know, is that I will never suck as bad as you....

I will poach elephants and club baby seals for ICS on my Xoom before Christmas. Any big game hunters interested, just get in touch.
Oh wait, we're talking about posting on forums
looks like they got the nexus s one ready as ics is available for download on that device. I'd imagine the xoom isn't that far down the line seeing how everyone who works at google owns one.
Are we FINALLY going to be able to WRITE to our SD Cards like EVERY other Android Tablet out there? This whole GED BULL**** has really held back Our Xoom's to there full potential. GED has been a Big Headache and WORTHLESS. It has NOT given us any cool stuff over other Android Tablets. I believe GED has hindered our devices. This will be the LAST GED device I buy as it does NOTHING Special.
