[Q] Screen Repair - only backlight works (can't pinpoint the problem) - G2 and Desire Z General

Mods, sorry if I should've posted this in another sub-forum. Just getting to this quickly as I've gotta head out, but would like to know/get any advice on what to do.
My T-Mo G2 just stopped displaying data on the screen one day, but the backlight still worked. It wasn't dropped at the time it stopped working (it was dropped previously, but was inside an Otterbox Commuter case at the time... thought that may not be saying much). At the time this happened, I was working outdoors, had the phone in my pocket, and was sweating while doing somewhat heavy lifting. When I attempted to use my phone, I noticed that only the backlight would turn on when I powered it on.
I could still answer calls by using the touchscreen slide-to-answer thing (purely by memory), so I know that component works. Sliding the keyboard open did nothing.
I disassembled the phone to check for any components that could've gotten twisted, burned out etc..., but this didn't appear to be the case. Any ideas?
I've attached a video on what happens when I power on my device. Any advice would help. Replacing the LCD seems to be the cheapest fix, but I don't want to buy one and realise it could be something else. Thanks!

Screen glitches/freezes (To do with magnetic case)

Hello from down-under ,
I've come to put forward a problem myself and a few others are having over at the Mtekk forums. I currently just purchased an I-Mate JasJam on Telstras' new NextG network and have been using it for about a week and a half. As this fantastic piece of equipment is a little on the expensive side, I wanted to make sure it was kept safe all the time, so I began to use (no matter how silly it made me look ) the I-Mate supplied Pouch, little did I know it did more damage then not using it...
After investigating over the last few days, It was concluded that the magnetic found in the supplied Pouch had some diverse effect on the switching on Landscape to Portrait mode when removing the JasJam from the Pouch to answer/make a call, play a game or send a text message; often resulting in a 'bugged' or 'glitched' screen, stuck between either Landscape or Portrait etc (I fixed by removing the JasJam and sliding out the Keyboard and back in).
After I few days I thought that this couldn't be right for a brand new machine and took my problem to the Internet in which I found others with the same problem. Since then I have stopped using the supplied Pouch and am now looking at purchasing the Krussel Orbit Pouch as a magnetic-less replacement (any users with one, I'd love your feedback). I am making this thread to see if any users of the XDA-Developers board have faced this issue and ask one further question:
1. Since I stopped using the Pouch I can only find one annoying trait left, whenever I switch the Screen back on from 'Standby' mode I seem to receive a small 'glitch' in the Today Screen if the device has been locked, if the device has been left unlocked the Screen can be switched on/off with no issue - does anyone else have this problem, I'm concerned that the magnetic pouch has caused some internal damage...
Thanks,
Elite_Gamer04
Hi, there is a bit more about this problem in the accessories thread, I noticed the magnet causing issues and wondered about internal damage as you did, even possibly causing the align issues, but a few people reported back they had been using the case from day 1 and while it affected the landscape/portrait, they had no align issues or any other problems, so I don't suspect that there is any internal damage occurring..I do wonder about your screen glitch but without actually seein it..I haven't a clue, also do you have a lot of today plugins?..could possibly be one of them is buggy..I'm not sure, but the case does certainly suck, I was immediately concerned with the magnet strength, off topic..but on my device if my thumb is a bit damp or any metal touches the aluminum bezel around the ear piece of the phone..the screen will flicker.
Thanks for your reply Chaotic, My device is in the same state as when it come out of the box, so this isn't a 3rd party issue. I have tried removing/adding the default Today Screen icons to see if it makes an issue to the 'glitching' of my screen when it on/off and it makes no difference, only thing I can see that makes it not happen *sometimes* is when the device is not locked.
Well thats one user without my issue, hoping someone will report it, or I'm going to get a replacement.
*If your testing to see if you have the same issue as me, simply hold your device in your hand (try both with it Locked and Unlocked) and push the top right-hand side button which should switch your screen off, press it again for it to come on. If you see a sort of 'glitch' of white on your Today Screen and then it fixes itself (I'm talkin 1-2 seconds) you have the same as me.*
Hi chaps,
I've used the magnetic pouch from day one with my UK T-Mobile Vario II and am still yet to see the landscape/portrait switching issue when removing the Vario II to answer a call.
I had a theory about this, and it's probably going to get shot down in flames for it's obviousness, but I'll mention it anyway... Could the problem be down to the machine being powered down (manually or automatically) while in Landscape mode... then when switching on automatically when a phone call is received, the phone tries to switch back to portrait mode but gets stuck?
I have road tested this theory on my own Vario II and have not seen the problem at all, but my ROM may handle things differently to yours? Apologies again if this suggestion is obvious.

I assume you are referring to the lock/unlock option found on the Today screen? I also see a short white screen delay when using this Today screen option.
I also see an even longer delay when using the password/pin lock option. Probably something to do with the locking program checking to see if the preset time delay for locking and requesting the password/pin has passed.
Disabling both options makes starting up a lot faster, although you may of course need these options enabled. I'm sure it's something that will be resolved by the manufacturer in time.
elite_gamer04, I hadn't ever used the lock on my device, so I enabled it just to test, and there wasn't any differences, I also wasn't sure of what the actual glitch was, but since you mentioned it I did some further investigating, I do notice a white screen when coming back from standby, but it lasts no longer than half a second..definitely not 2 seconds.
g00nerz, its all good, all info around here is appreciated, but there is definitely an issue with the case magnet, I don't have a single landscape/portrait issue unless I put it in the bundle case..I use a modded aluminum case at the moment..but if I switch back it happens, I'm pretty sure the words "bundle case" are in the title of the post with others with this issue if you want to check it out.
I have read where some people were discussing that they thought some had different screens..that could be why you haven't had this issue or maybe it is ROM related, but from what I understand its been a variety of brands with this issue...now that I think about it..I wonder if all the brands bundle cases are the same?
I think its Mike(I hope I got that right) that has tore one of these apart..few posts about it with pics on the forum he might know, but anyhow I wonder if theres actually a hardware switch that triggers the switch from portrait/landscape when the slide out kb is opened, and the magnet is affecting that..could also be it was revised on some models.
I'm just speculating/guessin on what might be causing it, I really haven't any solid info other than some people definitely have an issue with the case, including me.
I also see a short white screen delay when using this Today screen option

I <3 you hehe. Thank god its not just me . Yes I was referring to the 'Device Lock' and 'Device Unlock' function on the Today Screen. When it is Unlocked and I switch on/off the screen I see no 'lag' or 'white glitch' but with it on I see a small 1-2 sec lag. Anyways as you have confirmed it also I don't have to worry about returning mine and will get on with my new Krussel case I'm about to order.
Thanks
P.S If others are having this issue, or know of how to fix, don't hesitate to post.
Please consider that the use of wifi may drasticely slow down the device's power up. I do use the default case with the strong magnet, and when I power up my device with the wifi enabled it takes a while until he completely awake; the wifi plus the switch landscape => portrait (thanks HTC case) slow it down.
I am also experiencing the "auto answer" issue; from time to time when I put my device off its case it answer to the incoming phone call, but till now I was not sure that the case could be involved; are you sure about this? I tried to give some testing but I was not able to reproduce it; it only happen when it is not expected to happen

Hi elite_gamer04, As you had rightly mentioned this is really a fantastic device and no doubt about it.....like you I had the same problem when I bought it around 2 months back.
I was breaking my head as to why its happening, it looked for me as if the device hangs on and off...but did not notice keenly the instances when it happened as removing it out of the pouch was too normal a thing that did not hint me that it has something to do with the issue...But I was totally broken and disturbed and decided somehow I am going to get a replacement. I took it to the service centre and the guy there (very smart) as soon as I mentioned about the problem ( I went there thinking that it has something to do with the sliding mechanism) responded spontaneously taking the pouch opened the flap and took the magnet side over the screen and showed it to me....wow yes...its the pouch which was the culprit as we noticed the screen going crazy....Anyway I was relaxed but from that instance I kept aside the pouch that came with the pack and I am currently using a different one from the stores. Till now I have noticed no glitches and am happy I own a real amazing fast device.
About the other glitch you mentioned when the phone is locked yes I tried and it is there even for me but I dont think its a major issue for you to replace the device as its something to do with the screen refresh rate and memory which am sure would be fixed by new ROM upgrades in the days to come...but relax rest assured you own a fantastic device.
All the best
Thanks for posting this about the screen - I thought I was going nuts. I bought a replacement pouch that has a belt loop - so slightly more secure than the clip. But when i started using it - it always switches to landscape mode.
I'll have to find one without a magnet i guess!

Crazy Tytn screen and button problem, please help

Hi all, this is my first post on this forum but I've been reading for a while to educate myself.
I've got a Herm200 that I've been trying to troubleshoot but to no avail. I'm fairly certain that it has a hardware problem but I haven't been able to isolate anything.
Here's whats happening:
Occasionally the screen will come out of stand-by all white. This will also happen randomly if i touch the screen to perform a command. While the screen is operating, sometimes the buttons on the face will stop working, however the buttons across both sides will continue working just fine.
When the screen turns all white a soft, hard, or stand-by cycle will not always bring it back to life. The fact that the hard reset wont always fix the problem makes me think it's a hardware issue since the phone will boot-up with the the all-white screen.
This is incredibly frustrating especially since HTC wont accept any warranty claims in the USA on the Tytn.
At first I thought this might be a problem with the ribon connection between the screen and the base but i haven't been able to confirm or discount anything at this point. I have yet to find a way to consistently reproduce or rectify the problem so it's very hard to troubleshoot.
I pretty much have to take a second phone with me everywhere right now just incase i need to make a call. Please help! Has anyone ever encountered such a problem?
Thank you in advance!

Hi. This sounds very similar to a problem that I experienced with a HERMES100. I bought the phone off someone on Ebay recently - someone had obviously scrambled the radio on it. I re-flashed it, and it sprang to life. However, after a couple of days, I experienced a problem where occasionally the LCD would stop refreshing, all the pixels faded away leaving only a white screen. Under these circumstances, some of the buttons on the phone stopped working. Turning phone on/off sometimes cured the problem, or it would require the occasional hard reset. This would happen once or twice a day and I suspect thats why someone tried to re-flash the phone.
In the end, out of curiosity I took the entire phone apart, put it all back together again and now there are no more problems!! Totally fixed!
My suspicion is that it was one of the ribbon cable push connectors on the mainboard - possibly not seated properly, or a bit of dirt contaminating the connection. Obviously when I took the phone apart I must have re-seated it.
If you are planning to take your phone apart, please exercise considerable care because some of the parts are very small and easily damaged. I would recommend buying a proper kit to take it apart. I bought mine for about £5 off ebay. Particularly useful are the plastic spoon "wedges" used to gently prise open the case after removing the screens. Don't use a screwdriver - you will scratch the case.
Good luck.
wow... that sounds like exactly what's going on here, I actually even tried to disassemble it lastnight but didnt have the right driver set. thank you for the advice!
I'll look for one of those sets but what would you search for if i needed to find it?
Thanks again, I just got a set off of Ebay. Hopefully it'll be here next week
With any luck it'll be a connection issue.
I have had the exact same problem. Because I got the Tytn through work I made our IT department handle the issue and I am currently waiting for a replacement and to find out what happened.
Yep, it looks like the problems the OP is having are very similar to the problems we've been having over in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=291027
I'm beginning to think it's a hardware problem as well but not entirely sure.
People in the above thread mentioned that using the scroll wheel a while then moving back to use the D pad fixed the problem (very briefly in my case.) Once I use the center D pad button again it locks the hardware buttons under the screen until I make my device sleep and resume.
Somtimes rather than making all the front hardware buttons unresponsive the issue is that once I use the Down Dpad button I can't use the up button. Pressing up will make it go down, as will pressing down (at least that's working ).
Regarding the white screen - this sometimes also occurs. I can force it to white screen by putting a little pressure on the silver panel surrounding the top, right and bottom of the screen (I have an imate jasjam). Randomly when there's no pressure on the rim and I wake it out of standby, it has a white screen that can only be fixed by turning the screen off and on again.
Finally, the LED indicator seems screwy. Sometimes it never flashes. Other times it flashes sporadically (uneven intervals - we're talking maybe a minute between one flash then seconds before another). When I charge it sometimes the LED doesn't come on but nevertheless it charges. Sometimes if the LED is on it never turns green to indicate a full charge. Yet other times it comes on orange, turns green, then never switches off!
Is it possible that
a) The hardware button problems.
b) The white screen problem.
c) The LED problem.
are all related to some kind of connection going loose? Why would the hardware button problem be temporarily fixable with use of the scroll wheel if this were the case?
The other thread has fallen silent. I'm hoping that some of the gurus in here can offer some input here, even if they don't know the answer but can formulate an opinion. I know very little about these devices.
Thanks in advance guys!
PS - don't really know if I should start another thread, I've posted here as it seems like very much the same issue.
Anybody any idea? advice?
I had a similar problem with my HERM100. I didn't mess around with it too much, I just had Cingular replace it out of warranty exchange (thank god those original ROMs are on the wiki ). I did notice however that after doing a master reset, the screen would function again although I haven't messed around with it too much. I got so frustrated with removing the battery for 5 minutes and STILL powering on with a white screen that I just threw it in my back seat until the new one arrived.
I don't have these screen issues. I only have hardware button problems. It's so damn frustrating! I already own a replacement.
I just received a call from my girlfriend. I wasn't able to answer the phone with the buttons, only with a screentap. I also wasn't able to close the call with the hardware button. Since the side buttons work, I went to settings -> phone, closed it, and there we go. The hardware buttons worked again.
Why the heck is this? I truly hope for some wizz out there with some advice, since HTC would only tell me to send it back after replacing it with a new TyTN with same issues.
Regards,
DM.
Anyone anyone?

This is my first post as I've so far managed to cure all my issues from just reading the forum. However, I am now having a similar problem with the white screen.
I have a cingular 8525. It fell and the following day the call and end buttons remained lit and wouldn't turn off and they also wouldn't work.
I soft reset, nothing, I then removed the battery and when I turned it back on, there was a white screen and the buttons below still don't work.
I have read the other posts on this issue, but I need help on exactly what kit to buy to reconnect the screen cable and instructions on how to do it as I've never taken apart a phone before, although I have dabbled with other electronic devices.
Your help would be much appreciated, as I am in Jamaica and there are no technicians here who I trust to help.
Thanks in advance.
Below are links to 2 kits I'm thinking of getting. Is either one better than the other?

Both kits look ok. PDA one tells you a little more but the basics appear to be in both.
I'm curious though you soft reset and took the battery out, but have you done a HARD reset? I would always try this first before dismantling.
Mike
In my case, they also are always lit up when the screen is also active.
And no matter what ROM version, they occasionally stop responding. Side buttons keep working.

Thanks for the response.
I couldn't do a hard reset because the buttons weren't working.
I have made some progress with the phone now. Found a tech guy who looked at it for me. The white screen is gone, but the buttons still stop working from time to time.
All the connections seem ok.
Is there anything else that could cause the buttons to malfunction?

Nothing obvious.
Have you got applications installed that you have loaded - could be one thats playing up.
Have you now been able to do a hard reset?
If taking device apart and reassembling improved things it does suggest hardware though and might be worth double checking all those multi-connector blocks for good connections - i.e. take them out and in a few times to ensure any oxidation on contacts is removed.

Thanks Mike.
I will give that a shot.
I haven't installed any new applications recently, so I don't think it is a software issue.
Thanks again.

If it wouldn't be a software issue, why is it, in my case, instantly resolved when going to settings -> phone with the side buttons?
i had this problem i took it to a guy who fixed the problem he said it was a very small tear in the flex cable which causes this white screen every now ant then and the buton problem , sorry to say its the cable problem and u need a very capable person to fix it or replace it with a new one . its very common problem baised on the guy who fixed it .

Exactly what is happening to me, no white screen issues, just screen taps and answering calls, I also have another problem where the PDA will not allow me to open anything, be it the start menu or contacts, it will open and quickly close again. I have had mine swapped through Telstra in Sydney, it worked fine for a while and then the same crap again. These problems started before I even touched the OS, so it must be a build problem. Maybe we should write a joint letter to HTC letting them know that there is a serious problem with their machine.
I have had the same problem, got my Tytn through work so we sent it back to the company that supplied it to us. Got it back yesterday and they had replaced the "switchboard". Not sure what it is but there was the problem. Had white screen and buttons not working.

Lets say I want to stop my phone from turning off..

Lets say I am sick and tired of my 8525 turning off on it's on randomly during the day and I have loaded 10 different roms all the way back to the stock one, I have ran it with NO aftermarket programs, I have replaced the battery, and I have added support to the sim card to make sure it isn't losing contact and still the phone turns off randomly on it's on.
Sometimes I have noticed that it will turn itself off if I slide the keyboard out (maybe 3 times out of 100 turn offs), but 97% of the time it will do it on it's on sitting on the desk untouched.
If I was going to take my phone apart, is there any ideas or general consensus to what parts might be causing the phone to turn itself off? Should I get a new sim card maybe?
Really sick and tired of my buddy with an Iphone throwing this bug in my face telling me what crap HTC is as well as missing calls.
If the phone is turning all the way off, over and over, then send it in for a replacement. If you mean the screen is just turing off after a certain amount of time, you can adjust that under: "Settings->System (tab)->Power->Advanced->then uncheck Turn off device if not used for x minutes. See if that helps, or maybe its just ur phone and you need a replacement. I sent mine in to ATT and got one back after my screen stopped turning on"white screen of death", heh. So it could just be a hardware issue that you cannot really solve urself...
The phone is turning all the way off on it's on. I have to boot it back up like I had just installed a battery or something.
I am out of warranty and do not want to pay for a refurbished phone since this is my third phone from them during the warranty already (and this ones been the best till now). I would rather someone tell me the board/part and I take it apart and fix it myself. I have the tools, the instruction manual in PDF someone posted a while back, a website with almost every internal part for sale, and experience taking small devices apart (ipods and such) and replacing items, I just want to know if anyone knew of which part could most likely be the part causing something like this before I start replacing things blindly. I plan to go ahead and take it apart and check ribbon cables since I want to replace the whole housing anyway.
Unfortunately, my D900 has the same problem with yours, it turned off when i just sending messages or just touching the screen, and my replacement battery is already on the flight, when i get it, i will test it again. Hopeful, i can get a sweat result~~
Mine doesn't seem to do it when it is in use. I have had to get in the habbit of looking at the LED on the phone to make sure it is still turned on. Gets real annoying trying to say the Iphone isn't all that people think, but then have this little problem and the fact I am on my third HTC product in the year time frame. But the others died within 30 days, this one has lasted 10 months thats why I want to keep it.
Well I think I figured it out. I took it apart and it looks like the black box that has the battery connectors to it and is soldered to the main board has broken loose. I am trying to fix it, but does anyone know how much the main board is if I need to replace it?

Screen Issue...

Hello. My brother's Hermes hasn't worked for a while. He stopped using it because the screen is usually always white. He gave it to me to see if its salvagable, or parts.
He told me that its never been dropped or seen moisture. Supposedly when you freeze it, the screen works. If you "tweak" the body of the phone a certain way, the screen will work, but if you make any sudden moves it will turn off. I pulled the phone apart to try to find some sort of damaged ribbon cable or something. Found nothing. So I plugged the screen back together and put the battery in, as I turn on the phone, the screen turns on, but then fades to white. I disconnect the battery, put it back on, and it works, then fades to white. Sometimes its almost instant, sometimes it waits a minute before doing it.
Anyone know what this is? Is t his phone a parts phone now, or fixable?
This issue is covered in several existing threads:
Some suggest it is a poor connection on the D/pad chip and have had some success putting some padding on the chip tohold it more firmly against the d/pad board. Read through this thread you'll find it discussed somewhere in there:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=321163
Another thread to look at is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=303872&page=14
There is no single solution and the suggestions may not last permanently.
Mike
Thank you sooooo much. So far the screen seems to be working fine now. A++

[Q] Touchscreen Randomly Stopped Working

Ok, so first thing's first. I've been researching this for a few days now before creating this post. The touchscreen issues I'm finding online, are similar to what I'm experiencing, but the solutions have already been done, or my phone is not responding to them. I'm making this thread to see if anyone else has experienced the same issues or has any new news before I a) return my phone to stock, b) replace the digitizer, or c) buy a new one or upgrade to the G3.
My G2 was rooted, but kept on stock ROM with only small tweaks here and there. After the latest update, I noticed my work G2 had much better reception, so I returned my phone to stock to download the update. After updating, I re-rooted the phone, this time, the only thing I changed was the keyboard which I replaced with the G3 keyboard. Everything was fine for months until about a month ago.
It started with not being able to pull down the notification shade on the right half. No biggie, but after a week or so, it got worse. While using instagram, I noticed that the confirm button was sporadically responsive. Sometimes it worked fine, other times it didn't work at all. It began to progressively get worse on an almost daily basis. I decided to see what was going on and enabled both input options in the developer options menu. I found that the entire right side, about 1/8" was not responding to touch, the area not covered by glass screen protector( i removed it later while trying to troubleshoot). The upper right area showed about a half inch block that wasn't responding (the area where the data ribbon is). I was ok with that as instagram was really the only thing I used being affected.
About a week ago, the mid left screen area started being errratic. It began to get worse and started to affect the front touch screen buttons ( the area where the other data ribbon is). I enabled the input options again and saw that I now had a good portion of my left side of the screen was unresponsive. Even though I didn't drop it, I thought maybe the data ribbons had come loose as those 2 areas are where they are. I opened and disassembled the phone and re-sat the connctions after inspecting them. I double-checked all the other connections and LDIs in case humidity was the culprit. Everything looked good. Didn't fix the problem.
I've had to set my phone to unlock by facial recognition to ensure I don't get locked out, and changed my pin to use numbers not affected. I'm going to replace the digitizer, but wanted to see if anyone else had the same issue, or knew if it was, indeed, a software issue before I spend $75 (I will be replacing the digitizer and LCD to get it working sooner rather than risk damaging the LCD while replacing the digitizer and having to wait another week). I don't want to send it in to LG because I bought it on ebay and have no proof of purchase for warranty, and I want it working sooner.
One thing I noticed that may help with diagnosing, the screen now looks different when off. Before, in direct sunlight, you could see the dotted matrix from the digitizer, and that was it. Now, I can see the retangular pattern across the entire screen. I checked my work G2 which I just received a few months ago and the rectangular pattern is only visible on the edges of the screen, the center is black with only the dotted matrix visible. Keep in mind, this is in direct sunlight. In shade, the rectangles are visible on both.
I'm hoping it's a software issue, but I'm wondering if the digitizer is starting to separate from the LCD. I don't see any acutal separation though.
Thanks for reading the book, and for any feedback. Also, because it will probably come up, I want to avoid upgrading if I can because the G3 is just a little too big.
I restored the phone to stock with the most up to date software. Still doesn't work. It appears to be a hardware issue. I really thought it was software because the dead spots word for a split second after turning on the phone. Oh well. Guess I'm going to order a new digitizer or LCD combo.
