Hey there guys.
I know a lot of you folks have been highly impressed with Siri but i have not seen/read anybody mentioning that Android has an as good or an even better personal assistant called "Speaktoit" and it's free in the android market as well. I have tried all, if not most of the Voice Command apps in the market (Iris, Voice Action, Vlingo, etc...) but Speaktoit is by far the best in my own personal experience. Check out the video embedded below if you are not yet aware of it. I love Speaktoit so far!!!
Since i only seen people who upload apps and/or their own themes in the apps and themes section, i posted this thread in the "General" section. I Hope that i did not post this thread in the wrong section.

I thought you had to download trial versions of some software in order to change the voice? Speaktoit itself recommended two apps from the android market and one of them is free but you have to pay in order to download the voices. You can hear samples of the voices though and they are absolutely human-like.
Anyway, here's another awesome video to show how awesome this app is.

I like the "Grace" voice from SVOX, I have it set as my default voice for all apps. There are a few new ones I like too but I bought Grace first and am happy with her.
I downloaded Iris earlier and thought it was a joke. It recognized everything I said fine but wasn't able to answer not one question I asked it. I like the "smart ass" answers it gives, but not when asking "What is the weather?", it should be able to answer something like that! I know its early beta, but it sucks.

The voices on Svox are pretty awesome.I like Victoria's voice as well as that of Grace. Too bad they are not free though. "p.
Iris was only programmed in 8 hours and that is mighty impressive. Its still just in the Alpha stage but you are spot on; it's pretty useless so far.

Personally, I don't see what's the hype around Siri, as voice assistants have existed on phones for years.
It seems that whatever feature Apple announces - it immediately becomes very cool and highly wanted by everyone.
Imho, voice assistants are only useful if you use a bluetooth headset.
Otherwise if you need to take the phone out of the pocket and press the button to activate voice input, you might as well do everything by hands.
I personally don't use bluetooth since it sucks for listening to music.
I like Speaktoit, but sometimes it doesn't hear me in the mic. Voice Actions is fantastic, although not providing an actual conversation, it recognizes my voice perfectly. My only bug with it is that it fc's while your in a call for some reason.

As much as I love Iris and Android in general, that video is not a real Iris performance at all, not even close.
It clearly shows video editing trickery to make it seem fluent and funny.
Iris in its current alpha state does not perform like that.
Voice Actions and Speaktoit do perform close enough to Siri though.
By the way, you can create interesting responses for video performances like that with the Speak it app.
Cheers

Do any of you guys actually use SpeakToIt? Or is it just a cool party gimmick?

knowing your phone is rooted, for support purposes, is not the same as having access to your personal data. at all.
can't expect to have your car fixed without opening the hood, ya know?
and this is the risk we take when rooting, not getting "official" support.

No biggy, the app is RootExplorer. Its just associated with the wrong email account. I figured this out myself and they said that there currently is no way of changing the associated account with a particular purchase...so if you buy it with the wrong account you are out of luck.

It could be as simple as the fact that you have downloaded multiple root only apps. It's kind of a giveaway.
I'm surprised that you're surprised by the fact that Google knows your business. If you take a look at the permissions for the apps that come installed on the Evo stock, you'll find that they all have every permission out there... or almost.

Whos ingenious idea was it to include EVERYTHING in the call logs??
We have messages received, sent, rejected, calls recievd, made, rejected all in one giant list.
And if you called or messaged someone more than once then those entries are repeated that many times. This makes absolutely no sense to me and a nightmare to navigate and find a recent number.
I know that you can filter that list, but its very cumbersome and not practical to do that all the time.
I wish the call log was just that - a calls only log. And it would group the same number dialed successively together so they don't eat up multiple entries.
Nobody else baffled by this?

ALL these apps ,including Siri, depends on Really good data connection... so, yes if your data connection is poor, it will seem laggy .... so far speaktoit seems really good (TO me ) , but like i said, they all depend on a great data connection... best be,t try them on a wifi connection ....
PS .. I take great offence with you saying "i would be very supprised to see anythink like siri work properly on android ".... fact is google voice search ,an app built in to all android phones, does all that siri does plus more, and it is well integrated into the OS ... the only difference is voice search will not answer you with voice ,but with text.. its been around long before siri just not popular ,but once again ,this is why Jobs and his products were so successful ... He didn't invent the wheel , but he knew how to convince the masses that he redesigned and streamlined it , and took full credit for its existence...
SO please don't put down the android OS, it is still young and growing, to the point that Jobs feared it ...

Siri ONLY runs on a dual core iPhone4S. Siri would suck on a single core iPhone4. Siri needs mega horsepower and even in the iPhone4S it's laggy. The point is that if you try any of the Android voice assistants, the more horsepower you have to throw at it, the faster it will respond. So don't try and compare a single core phone and expect to be the same as a dual core one.
Well iPhone 4s with dual core and a little bit of multitasking ( if one can call it that) , and behold it has the same issues that other dual core real multitasking phones are suffering form ....
Look at some of the settings being turned off or tweaked, to extend battery life ...... siri.

Apple's Siri voice control system is as a 'digital personal assistant' designed to allow you to talk to your phone like you talk to other people.
Many Google Android functions already have similar apps built in - although not quite to the specifications of Apple's much-hyped control systems.
Now it seems Google may be about to unveil an official Android rival to Siri - called Majel after Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, the actor who played the voice of the Starship Enterprise in Star Trek.
The name was reported by sources speaking to the Android and Me blog this week.
The name tallies with earlier comments from Google staffers about a 'Star Trek'-like approach.
Google is definitely working on such a system - and this week announced that it had acquired the company Clever Sense, which offers a voice control app.
'I say this year because I’ve heard that engineers at Google X are working around the clock on finishing the first release and the NYTimes previously reported that one product would be released by Google X this year,' wrote Android and Me.
Google X is the search giant's 'blue sky ideas' division - a secretive lab where engineers are free to go wild with ideas such as talking fridges and lifts that take you to space.
'A January or February release might be more realistic,' said Android and Me. 'Other more advanced features like controlling phone actions and applications with natural language commands are expected to come later.'
In earlier interviews, Google acknowledged that it was indeed working on such as product - and that it would be rather like the voice of the Starship Enterprise.
'Our approach is more like Star Trek, the Starship Enterprise - everything is voice-aware,' said Google's Matias Duarte.

The talking part made me spit my drink out of my mouth from laughing... so thanks for that.

Siri-like function is really not useful in non-English-speaking countries. So I don't expect it at all.

Well, apple just applied for a patent on, well basically multitasking. Something their phone doesn't even really do.
I wonder how long it will take for them to blow all their cash suing other companies.
The sooner the better IMO.
I hope Google gets majel to do the voice for this app. Then fire a couple quantum photon torpedoes at Apple and make them have no patents and have to pay licenses to every single tech company in the world.
