Sony Ericsson forces us to close XperiaBlog.net
by XB on October 19, 2011
in News
It is with great sadness that we have to bring you the news that this will be the last post on this website. Sony Ericsson has filed a formal complaint about the use of the trademarked ‘Xperia’ name in our domain name and have requested that the domain names, including that of XperiaX10.net, be transferred to them.
Sony Ericsson is alleging that we have used the domain names in “bad faith”. We are stunned and disappointed that Sony Ericsson, a company that we have spent much of our free personal time in promoting, especially the Xperia brand, has decided to take this formal action against us. After all we are just like you, passionate Sony Ericsson users, who have strived to bring the community breaking news and an independent viewpoint.
We do not have the resources to fight Sony Ericsson on this and therefore this is the last you will hear from us. Sony Ericsson has made great strides in its Xperia portfolio, especially in listening to the community. This makes it all the more confusing as to why Sony Ericsson would want to shut us down. We genuinely believe that 2012 could be a bumper year for the company, we just wish we could have been there along for the ride.
All the best.

this is really sad, they were the blog i always went to to get the latest info! Shame Sony Ericsson!

Shame Sony Ericsson!

That's bad, I hope they open up a new site.

Thats utterly shocking, why support developers and custom rom makers on xda then go and force others with the same ideas and in my view not using the xperia name wrongly at all, quite the opposite infact, shame on sony ericsson indeed

Technically SE is correct, Xperia is their trade mark that they have registered no one is supposed to use it. But it's really bad that they are asking to shutdown after having such a success with the blog. If they had a problem with the blog they should told them when they started it.

Yeah i agree from a legal point of view it is very understandable, what SE could have done is taken control of the domains and the blog but kept the starter of the blog and others as moderators, that way they get their xperia name not being misused by unauthorised people but still have the blog going, plus consumers would still be happy as we would still have our beloved blog
Sent from my LT15i using xda premium

Shame to SE for being hard on their fan base. But, legally can they do this? What if XperiaBlog is claimed as one word?

LOL! After 12 years of worship to Ericsson - SE it's the first time that I say and I mean that I'm going Samsung! Enough with the SE bull$hit! Galaxy nexus!! Here I come!!!! :-D
PS: Screw u SE!! $%#*

XperiaBlog has also written some critical posts about updates for the X10 etc. I don't think SE appreciated that.

Another bad turn when the site posted the comparison between Arc S and iPhone 4S when it should've just let the Chinese community handle it...

SE is always sensitive to what sites put down about their product. When you put out something that may reflect negatively, which it did against the Arc S in the camera comparison, it's not a surprised result. Since the site is also using Xperia in its name and actually damaging it's reputation (may be not alot, but it still does). Think about a scenario where I want to know more about the product. I found the site, oh hey, it has Xperia in it. Seems like a good site to find out good reviews. You step in, and you find criticism on it. Would you have a good impression on the product? I've worked on many club sites under SE, and many were closed down for the same reason.
Sites like Mobile-Review was also abandoned for the same reason, alot of premature conclusions and no filtering to what is posted. Not that I want press to censor their opinions, but some opinions/assertions were far from true.

Changing the name of the site would be easy but SE wants the domain name. Setting up another website with the same content would be time consuming and a major pain in the arse.
It's a shame considering all the effort they've put in maintaining it and updating it with the latest info.
And it's not like they were cyber-squatters or anything.

I don't think that stories like
http://www.xperiablog.net/2011/09/0...2-with-1-5ghz-dual-core-4-3-inch-720p-screen/
or
http://www.xperiablog.net/2011/10/1...icsson-walkman-w23i-with-dual-core-processor/
were perceived with pleasure over at SE's HQs... Still a shame though.

Actually this is what happened to me when I first started looking for xperia info some time ago, I thought it was an official site so I was surprised to read some of the posts.
For that reason I can understand why SE have taken this action. On the other hand, theres no reason why xperiablog cannot start up under a fresh name, if they have so many followers already it wont be so hard to spread the word.

They could, but from my knowledge, there are 2 reasons they're demanding the close. First is to prevent any damage to their brand from the site, and the other is to demand the xperiablog domain. I'm sure xperiablog.com will be popping up soon from them, which they have the authority to do since the word "xperia" is their's to begin with. So to prevent any confusions for people who hit SHIFT+ENTER instead of CTRL+ENTER wouldn't be redirected to the wrong site.

Petittion to release the bootloader

Rikard Skogberg @ SonyEricsson, who is also the writer of the blog @ http://blogs.sonyericsson.com/products/ said that SonyEricsson are really hearing what we, the users, have to say about the products. He say that the users opinion has a big impact inside the company, or at least that was what he said only 2 days ago.
So my thought was to make a petittion in order to try and open SonyEricssons eyes up, and try to get them to understand that we really want them to release the bootloaders for our Xperia phones.
The reason for making the pettition here is that YOU have to be logged in to sign it, not like the SonyEricsson blog that anybody can sign 1000 times if they want...
And we can easy link to this forum when we have a lot of signatures, to show SonyEricsson the result...
So now, keep this pettition clean, no hard words or nothing bad about SonyEricsson nor the whole delay and 2.1/2.2 issue, this thread is not what this is all about.
If you want to mark me or flame me for trying this, then PM me, or start a new tread instead !
I don´t think this have been tried before, but if it has then pleace show me a link to a bunch of signatures, so we can show it to Rikard Skogberg and SonyEricsson.
Rikard Skogberg have said earlyer that not even 18.000+ signatures could make them give us Android 2.2 instead of 2.1, and that can be a marketing issue.
He have not said anything about them not giving up the bootloaders if we ask nice ?
And reading what he said two days ago, things look like they have changed a little in the company since May.
Also i don´t think that any one has actually tried this before, so give us your signature in this petittion and lets try this for real if we can convince SonyEricsson to give us the bootloaders...just try...
Just write down your name and what SonyEricsson phone you have, and let´s hope for the bedst.
Hey, it can´t hurt to ask SonyEricsson nice for the bootloaders, can it
To keep this a nice and clean petittion, pleace use this form:
I would really like if SonyEricsson would set our Xperia phones free, and give us the bootloader

Rikard has already stated on the Product Blog that they are not going to do that
Also, when 18k signatures on the Froyo petition went unheard, what makes you think they will look here?
Wouldn't it be better to start it on their blog site?

Umm pretty sure he's referring to these 18700 signatures, which I assume most of us already signed back in May.
http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?froyo
Maybe that's where you should set-up your petition. It's a cute thought that they'll release the bootloader (lol yeah right), but it's been asked before and totally rejected. In reality they don't listen to their customers until their sales start to really decline. That's how we'll get their attention with our wallets, unfortunately not through online petitions.
I can't imagine that they'll ever release the bootloader, unless they have a change of CEO and the new guy has a significantly more relaxed attitude about this whole concept.. maybe someone off the board of google could step in and take the job!!
If they do give access to the bootloader, it will be for future models, don't expect it for this phone or previous models.
They have agreements with cell phone service providers that wouldst allow them to do it.

Even if they "agree" to do so, it would probably take at least a month for them to do so. Let me tell you all a secret. You know why the Xperia X10 has X10 in it? Because everything SE does with this phone takes X10 (10 times) longer than usual.
Also if they agree, don't forget their slogan. Make.Believe.

BGR- Bash Google's Reputation

its amazing to see how this website advertise lies about android smartphones and tablets time after time, than "corrects it", after the damage is done just because they are apple fans.
I HOPE THAT GOOGLE WILL DROP A MAJOR LAWSUIT ON THEIR HEAD, SO THE LESSON WILL BE LEARNED.

To be fair, the way your post is worded I thought you meant XDA too.
I thought the title was clear.
The whole 'Xoom is dead' rumor reeked of FUD, it's a shame all the major sites picked up on it.
ive almost completely stopped reading BGR because of their blatant hatred of Google and apple fanboyism. Every article Geller writes is so pro apple it makes me want to puke.
His review of the iPad 2 is so biased it might as well have been written by apple.
BGR is a tech news blog site, they deal with a lot of rumors from various sources some sources are better then others.
Typically I like BGR, and yes they have an apple bias. However going into that knowing they have an apple bias makes it easier to sift through the BS.
At least its better then the way Gizmodo is going with their terrible new site design. Gawker sucks anyways, the guy who started Gawker was very resentful of Gizmodos success and lambasted them recently because of it, what a dooche.
Engadget seems to be getting worse as well, what with "The AOL Way" and all (google it), multiple people have quit Engadget due to this very reason. Seems like our choices for good tech blog sites are getting worse and worse. Sad.
Anybody reccomend a tech news blog site? I like Android central, but like Gizmodo and Endgaget they are also owned by a blogging collective, which seems to be a bad thing. Time will tell.
This is pretty standard for tech blogs. They report on their sources and tips that they think they can trust, and if new information comes out, they update the story.
I don't see why you're mad for them posting a story based on rumor, which is clearly stated in the post, then correcting it when they prove it wrong lol.
You're acting like they raped your child or something.
I didn't like the BGR story simply because it was poorly reported. The numbers they list don't add up (compare the alleged production numbers compared to the 2011 projected shipping numbers). But then again, I've often lamented the poor state of tech "journalism," and it certainly does seem to be getting worse.
I agree that tech journalism is suffering and hate it when one website states a rumor I see ten more show up in my RSS feed. Engadget seems to going through a transition phase and that was my favorite website. Android central I will say has become the number one source in android over the last couple of months. Android and me is a joke and androidguys just doesn't stay as up to date as they should. Would frequent phandroid more but they refuse to make their forums on tapatalk.

Really? So it would be OK to write the following:
According to an unconfirmed report, martonikaj is set to be arrested for raping a child sometime in April and his wife will file for divorce after June. XDA watcher DigiDev cites anonymous sources from within martonikaj's family claiming that he may have raped as many as 10 children, but plans to curtail rapes during the first quarter of 2011. The cause of the alleged drop in rapes is unclear, though the website’s sources speculate that martonikaj may be uncertain about his position within the famiy and will thus slow-down his abuse. DigiDev also speculates that martonikaj may instead turn to killing stray dogs, which is the more likely scenario considering martonikaj's previous comments with regard to the SPCA. Total rapes in the area in 2011 are expected to be around 30 - 40 the report states.
So long as I post the following a day later?
UPDATE: Following the publication of this post, martonikaj supplied us with a comment via email. He states that DigiDevs’ report is not accurate, and that he does not rape childern.
It doesn't matter that a prospective employer saw the first article, and not the second. Or that people may say "I thought martonikaj was arrested for rape?" for years when seeing him walk down the street. Nope. Nothing wrong with that kind of journalism, huh?

Thanks for the link
I can (sort of) understand the attack on Sony after the whole GeoHot fiasco & wanting the i.p's of those who downloaded his keys.
But the later attacks on Nintendo and now Codemasters just seems to me like the gaming industry is being unfairly coordinated against as a soft target.
As things stand, they caught three chaps who hosted a chatroom, labelled them as the "leaders" of Anon in Spain and compared them to terrorist bands like ETA. We are not sure if the whole thing is a joke or if they really are so shameless to lie like that.
I read there was evidence on computers. The idiots may not be the leaders but they are part of if and I’m glad they got busted. **** Geohot. The guy can rot in prison for all I care. I have 4 PS3s a PSP and Xperia Play. I have well over 50 PS3 games on BR and purchased every one of them. I paid monthly for PSN Plus and DCUO and could not use either one thanks to those POS cowards. And they sounded gay in their videos. (so did Geohot, probably his boyfriend)
Evidence of what? Anonymous doesn't have leaders, it's a horizontal movement... and anyone with a decently configured Tor can run LOIC and "join Anonymous" in a DDoS. Heck, my own forum got DDoS'd the day before yesterday (260k open sessions, when we have only 350 users ).
http://anonops.blogspot.com/2011/05/lets-be-clear-we-are-legion-but-it.html
I understand that you're angry because the attack stripped you from some of Sony's services (as it did with me) and it's condemnable as it is data theft, but we still don't know who the offenders were. For all we know, it could be the same people as the guys who downloaded that huge data mining torrent with 150M+ FB profiles. And besides, people who tinker with devices are more prone to give you further enjoyment of your device after sale than anything Sony (or any other device vendor) will do for you. The hackers are not the hacks, if you know what I mean.
I can understand wanting to mod there stuff but Sony has a right to fight back against Geo****. Anon had to start with someone. I read (not in the link I posted because I just linked the first one I found after I was asked for it) that they found Dos scripts against Sony servers and others. I also had to get a new CC and change all my CC automatic payments to the new card. It is more than loosing a service I was paying for.

So why be so upset about people Cracking Sony Devices .. Do you Feel modding/Cracking/Rooting/Jailbreaking Phones is wrong too ?

XperiaBlog.net shut down by Sony

http://xperiablog.net has been asked to relinquish both that domain and XperiaX10.net and hand them to Sony Ericsson. They have been accused of using the Xperia brand "in bad faith" and they can't fight against such a behemoth. It's a shame that one of the top sites about our phones gets the axe in such a jerkass way.
Can Sony do that? I know if you're just holding on to the domain (Like walmart.com or target.com or something) and doing nothing it's cyber squatting but if you're actively posting updating and whatever and not selling it-it's yours?
Another reason to boycott sony products
This website is not affiliated with or endorsed by Sony Ericsson. SONY ERICSSON, XPERIA, and various product names found on this website are trademarks of Sony Ericsson unless otherwise noted.
xperiablog
thats why it got shutdown.
whereas sites like playstation.blog are official websites supported by S0NY
I read some updates and decent reviews from them.. Too bad that they are closing now..
As you can guess, we're afraid now in Xperia.Es that done jerkass decides to send a similar letter.

Companies take trademarks and brand image very seriously. It is well within their legal rights to protect it, if there is justification. In this case there is justification, as Xperia is a trademark of Sony Ericsson, and they felt their brand was not being handled properly.
Even Microsoft made a person give up their domain name because it phonetically sounded like "Microsoft."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_vs._MikeRoweSoft
They're so lame. Communities and people like them are what makes a company big, when someone goes online to check on a product and finds that it has so many followers, fansites dedicated to it, reviews and a lot of support, we like the product and know that even if the company turns their back on us (most of the time) the community will be there to help us.
Good luck on your site Logseman, let's hope it stays there for a long time.

In this case there is justification, as Xperia is a trademark of Sony Ericsson, and they felt their brand was not being handled properly.

I call bull**** on this.
These guys were enthusiasts of Sony Ericsson's products, and they had been informing about all things Xperia for a long while, without any bad faith or slander against Sony Ericsson. Were they to come to court, they would prove it. They have decided not to because they can't or aren't willing to pay to defend what is self evident.
This kind of statements, aside of reeking of corporate slavery, are completely false as well. There are heaps of sites dedicated to bash Apple every day. Since those guys know that there is no such thing as bad press, they don't act against them. Meanwhile, Sony Ericsson, which has been struggling for years in the market, chooses to strangle one of its greatest unofficial feelgood spreaders. Way to go!
We should be thankful that both HTC and o2, Really don't care that XDA are using there name

I love my Play, but screw Sony.

the hackers are still arses to hack Sony. -.-
Either way , ask sony to make an official Xperiablog like playstation.blog.eu/us .
Or create a FB page xP
I know the bad faith thing sounds bad but they have only asked for the domains haven't they?
The guys behind the site could set up another that doesn't use the branding.
With such a domain a lot of people may think it's an official site, which is why they have asked for it.

Sony Ericsson has its own official sphere with its official product and development blogs, its own official forums and so on. It goes against its own interests to smother what outside people are saying, particularly when they're enthusiasts of your products.
Take another example: Cyanogen Mod does not endorse Sony Ericsson closely or market their phones in any way, yet the CM7 team received hardware and support from them. If they are willing to help people who, so to say, are outsiders, how come are they lawyering against insiders who were willing to spread the awareness of their brand?
I really hope they're just after the domain name and aren't actually looking to shut the site down. I can understand Sony wanting to protect trademarks, but I can't understand why they'd be opposed to the content of the blog.

Z1 Petition

Hi all,
It is getting to my attention that most Z1 users are displeased with the Unlock Btl Camera issue. I have now created a petition to show how upset we are at their lack of action towards this issue.
There are rumours circulating that Sony already as a fix to the issue, but is reluctant to release it, due to allowing the camera config becoming of public knowledge (therefore other roms being able to copy it), this has not been confirmed or denied, so the petition does not run under this assumption.
I take pride in the camera of my smartphone but I do like to modify my phone as much as possible.
So please I urge you to sign the petition below:
http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/xperia-z1-unlocked-bootloader-issue
If you know of other communities, please spread the word.
The body of the petition can be modified, If I get enough people voting on a better text!

Do you have a source for the underlined bit or is it speculation ?
The above has now been corrected.
I want to bring to Sony's attention that we want the issue resolved and not that we/I believe that Sony doesn't want to fix it.
That's what copyright is for (outside of China), a good way for Sony to make some money if people copy. Like Samsung and Apple feuds

I would guess companies as big as this have patent disputes. But has every year happens Apple and Samsung are always on the court for those, because the money they make from phones, far surpasses the amount spent on courts, therefore making patent disputes irrelevant. I think, if and only if the rumors are true, that Sony is trying to avoid being involved in those.
Very good idea!
Everybody should sign this.
Why is there a donation link with a minimum of $2 in the petition? Don't see the point in it, besides to make money.
Simply ignore it, your petition is alredy there.
