I have uk sgs2 with xxkg2 and chainfire root with the yellow triangle on bootup...question is as follows:
There is a ROM thread kh3 in the general section and also lots of roms in the development sections referencing kh3 etc...what's what...which one do I use...is kh3 firmware or rom?
Do I have to use odin or cwm to flash the new rom/firmware?
Finally whats the difference between the two development forums and which ROMs the most popular in your opinion?
Thanks and sorry for noob type questions!

They're basically different ROMs based on the KH3 firmware
How you flash it depends on the ROM itself.

firmware=/=rom=/=os=/=android all the same thing in this case
kh3 is the newest leaked rom, there will be odin flashable files available from the thread, and there's a cf-root kh3 kernel available

First of all, welcome to SG2! Hope you enjoying it.
1. All depends on your preference. Some say KG1 is good, some say KH3, etc etc. All depends on your preference. Just try and see which is your preference.
2. Odin is need to use computer and cwm recovery is by turning off phone first, then home button, volume up and power button all at same time.
3. Original is where dev who created them using new ways (in easy words). Most of them are less-samsung-ness. So if you install them, example CM7 (cynogen mod) or MIUI roms, you will not have samsung apps inside but you can install them if you are interested.
Hope this helps a little.
Thanks guys...Let me see if I've got this right...
1) I need to install the ROM first and then flash a kernel from chainfire..correct?
2) Also, I'm interested in MIUI, Villian, Cognition and Modaco ROMs...don't know much about them just seems a lot of people are using them/have interest in by looking at number of pages for each thread...any views please?
3) Sorry, lastly the KH3 rom in the general section is I guess original Samsung unmodified ROM??

What ROM ??? you have a ROM installed already its your original firmware .
For root flash kernel from Chainfires thread you will also get CWM .
2) Also, I'm interested in MIUI, Villian, Cognition and Modaco ROMs...don't know much about them just seems a lot of people are using them/have interest in by looking at number of pages for each thread...any views please?
Your choice Cognition and Villain probably easier to start with .

KH3 rom in the general section would be the same as the rom in the stock roms post in Dev section .
One ROOT and install Clockwork Mod recovery .
Two decide on custom rom and follow its install instructions .
Nothing to stop you flashing a stock KH3 rom before above steps .

Thanks jje...I don't have any custom roms installed...just stock leaked kg2...phone is already rooted and with CWM recovery..
How does Modaco rate as I have kitchen account (previously owned zte blade!)?

Basically, the ROM is Gingerbread. There are many updates which are very tiny tweaks. Look at Samfirmware.com
Rom developers use these latest ROM's because of the unsatiable appetite of those who want the latest (not a proper update) slightly changed update with dev tweaks

In other words, we have an OCD when it comes to version numbers and not having the latest firmware installs. Just ends up feeling like there is something we are missing out on and could benefit from whatever it is in the update.

Hi, I'm fairly new to the whole rooting Android and custom roms but I've got the basics down. I'm just wanting to know some good custom roms that are pretty much stock roms but with extras in the menus and everything like CM7, also any good rooting apps, etc.

Lot of people from florida for some reason. I can suggest a CM7 or if you want, a sense 3.0 rom. You really just have to go through the roms yourself and find one that you like personally.
I'm currently using CM 7.1 but have tried OMGB, MiKG, Fresh, and most of them I've just reverted back to the stock because certain main features don't work well etc. I've also tried a few not listed on Rom Manager by Clockwork Mod but half of them don't install properly or just work great on the EVO.
A tidbit of advice: Get rid of rom manager, if you want I can link you to my thread where I have a script to flash Amon_ra for you and everything. Rom manager and CWM are terrible on the Evo. So if you want that let me know.
Anyway, there will be bugs and you might just like AOSP in which case, stick with CM7 (I use 7.0.3.1 just because of the battery drain issues I heard about from CM7.1
Alright, let me get that link and I'll check it out.
link is here
ROM Manager and CWM work just fine on my EVO. I've never had a problem with a ROM or backup or anything with either of them. I don't use ROM Manager to flash new ROMs, but I do use it to download MIUI updates. Don't necessarily take one person's opinion as a definite. Don't use ROM Manager to install ROMs though, that will most likely give you problems. Do it the old-fashioned way.

Yes, but only after 1.8.19, which I just upgraded to...I was sticking with 1.8.5 for a while b/c it was very stable on my phone. But yes, you can upgrade now without using ROM Manager.

Introduction
I've had my I9100G for more than a week now and to date there's no hint of anyone working on a custom ROM or mod for it. I guess we'll have to resign ourselves to the fact that it's not really a popular model for the regular devs and if we want to get some mods or custom roms on our phones, we have to do it ourselves. I'm currently working on customising my phone, but since I have a day job and little actual experience in Android, it's going to take some time before I can put anything out. So I'm inviting fellow I9100G users to join me in the effort to get some mods developed for the I9100G.
Kernel
Firstly, the kernel. AFAIK, there are two available kernels so far for the I9100G - KH4 (Android 2.3.4) and KI1 (Android 2.3.5). There are rooted versions for both, but as of now only the KH4 one has CWM recovery. In addition, Samsung has released the source code for the KH4, but I'm yet to find the source code for the KI1. I'l like to develop for the KI1, but without a source code and CWM recovery for the kernel, efforts are limited. So I appeal to anyone who knows where we can get the source code for KI1 or can help get CWM on the KI1, please respond!
Mods
So far I've deodexed my phone running on KI1 and managed to get the battery percentage mod on it using the UOT. That one's pretty simple. This weekend I hope to try some more mods like the Advance Power Menu, for one. Once I get that done, I'll share on xda. Appreciate suggestions on what mod we can apply that's useful, but too complicated. If anyone manage to produce mods for your I9100G, appreciate if you could share.
Hopefully once we have a few mods done for the I9100G, we can consolidate them into a custom ROM for our phone.
Let's work together to make our phone better!
I would like to join with little experience on android .
I understand our target is to make custom Rom for the g model, but do you think its we can make it possible to flash other i9100 custom roms with sgx 540 processor ?
Can we have a list of things to start with to acheive that?
Btw, i tried deodexeding and i didn't success. Any advice on this .
Thanks

Hi ss219100g,
We can't flash I9100 custom ROMs into the I9100G. I tried flashing VillainRom onto mine, but I couldn't make it work. Needs someone with more knowledge and experience, I suppose. All I can try right now is try to apply various modes I pick up from xda onto my phone.
So far I've managed to apply the Battery percentage and Advanced Power Menu mods. I'll share them later today. I'm still looking around for the next thing to try. Any suggestions?
For deodexing, I used xUltimate. The link's here:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/xeudoxus/47283-release-xultimate.html
Basically, I copied the contents of /system/app and /system/framework to \origi_frame\ and \origi_app\, run the tool, then copied the results back onto the phone. Remember to delete the *.odex files in the phone.
hi, i one of the new sgs2g user.
i would like to join and hoping if we could ever make some custom rom for this version.
but i still noob bout android, and this is my first android phone.
i was able to root my dzki1 kernel, using insecure kernel and abd command, but unable to flash cwm recovery, is there way to flash it?
and other thing, what is deodex and odex? i try google, but could not understand

so meaning to say that until to-date there are no available custom ROM for the GT-I9100G devices??

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm fairly sure the only issues you have are with te modem that's installed causing degraded data network service. I can test tonight as I have a 8100g laying around atm.

i did and that's normal, you get a yellow triangle because you installed an unofficial (insecure) rom or kernel, don't worry about it, it doesn't affect the stability of your phone in any way, it's just for saying that you have intalled a custom feature (rom or kernel)!
Hi! A friend left me his Defy so I could so I can put it on steroids as it's working really slow. It's still on Android 2.1 (Vodafone Spain) and never touched. I've read all the necessary stuff for beginners and understood everything (I'm not new to rooting and flashing, I've a fully hacked Desi), but I want to know a few things.
First of all, should I stay on 2.1 as base or is it better to upgrade to Froyo, in which case what is the preferred SBF?
As this is for a friend and I'm not gonna have access to his phone everyday I need a really stable rom. Are the latest CM roms stable enough?
And at last, I've read that some of this roms come with the kernel, what does that mean?
Thanks in advance for all the info.
1) You can upgrade to Froyo, or stay as it is(will not really affect performance) although people report Froyo to be a bit smoother
2)CM7 is very stable and fast( you may use maniacs or other builds)
3)I think you are referring to the 2ndboot ROMs which include a custom kernel. Though I personally use them, they may not be stable/fast enough for everyone
I would suggest trying cm7,9,10 and check how it works out for you

Yes, isn't that 2ndboot thing necessary to be able to boot any custom rom? So now if I would like to install a custom rom I should (update to Froyo,) root, install 2nd init and then flash the rom and recover the nandroid for that build?

Yes that's right, but what nandroid do you mean? Usually you don't have to recover nandroid. For CM7,9,10 you should just flash .zip from cwm. For ms2ginger you have to follow the instructions in op (there you have to use a nand backup)
Sent from my Defy green lense using xda-developers app
No, there are ROMs without custom kernel as well. Cm7 and all miui builds are based on stock kernel ( all GB ROMs). JB is available in both, so is ICS, and only a couple of ROMs are nandroid backups, rest are zips. Remember to wipe data as well while flashing builds

Ok, so now I'm into work. I've already rooted and installed 2init. Nest step is to install a custom rom but I can't decide from this three: Epsylon3's CM9.1 Android 4.0.4, [email protected]'s CM10 Moto Ice Gun Edition or Quarx's CM10 Android 4.1.2. What would you recommend if looking for stability?

Ok, sorry.
Can someone point me in the direction of a flashable stock kernel? I can't seem to find one, and i prefer running custom roms, but with the stock kernel.
If I cant find one, does someone mind building one for me from source? I would really appreciate it. If you could build it, and send me the zimage with the libs, I could do the rest.
Also, would packing the boot.img from the stock rom into a flashable zip work on CM, AOKP or other custom roms? I know they change some things that make the stock kernel and components unusable, just curios.
I started to set up a build machine, but my pc does NOT have the resources necessary. I have to run linux on a VM and I only have 2gb of ram. Naturally, that makes things crawl.
Thanks for the help.
Dude... Look on the stickies. Use the search function or Google. Don't be lazy. You are obviously not a complete idiot, so use the resources available to you. This device has been around for awhile so there is a stock kernel here in the forums.

No need to be sorry. Most of us are more than willing to help. But you gotta make an effort to help yourself. Sorry I came off as a d**k. Just how I am. You can ask almost anyone from the E4GT forums about me.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Yeah, unfortunately I wasn't clear in what I wanted, or I didn't ask correctly. But I did do a little more research after posting and found what I wanted. Although I had to make it myself, as I couldn't find anything like it.
Most kernels are packaged with the kernel and the ramdisk (boot.img). If you run an aosp Rom, you can use the stock boot.img. if you run a CM Rom, you can run a CM boot.img (modified ramdisk).
Now, I want to run the stock android kernel, on a CM Rom. I couldn't find ANYTHING that has that. They all have CM kernels, or variants of, but no stock, from source kernel. Any kernel reset zips include the stock libs and ramdisk which is incompatible with CM (bootloop).
To solve this, I unpacked the stock boot.img (zImage and ramdisk), put the zImage together with Koush AnyKernel, modified the updater-script for the N7 and boom, it worked.
The reason I can run the stock kernel on a CM Rom, is because I didn't mess with the ramdisk. So I can now run ANY Rom with my stock kernel, because I don't mess with the ramdisk.
Make sense? Sorry I wasn't clear before.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Makes perfect sense. Although, I believe that most custom kernels, including stock based ones can run almost any ROM including CM especially if you are using multirom . Once I get my N7 fixed tonight I will be able to dive into it and find out exactly what I am using because I have no problem with the 6 or 7 ROMs I have on my device.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Thank you.
You're right, I can run any custom kernel on any Rom, but I could never get a stock kernel zip, to not throw CM into a loop. And all kernel devs, who have kernel reset zips, use a disclaimer saying you can't use on CM based roms. I don't fully understand why
