[Q] Screen dim after getting wet, cause? - Focus General

Hello All.
My Focus ended up in the washer... i got it out, yanked the battery, set it in a bag of rice for three days and hoped.
Phone seems to have come back, all features appear to work. (WOOT!)
Only issue is the screen is very dim. It was bright when it first booted. Seemed fine for a few minutes.. then flickered and went dim.
I already disassembled, removed and replaced the screen connector to see if it was just a dirty contact. No luck.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

To me, it looks like some water got to the digitizer.
However, I'm not an expert, but from what you describe plus what you did, that seems to be the case.

Thanks. Little more info ... I don't know if it helps... but when I go into diagnostics, for the screen, Setting *#0*#, I can see red and Blue, but green is practically non existent.
Also, is there a "Backlight" like in a LCD screen, a set of CCFL's or similar I could replace or is is the digitizer assembly a sealed factory piece?
Thanks again.

I see. Afaik, the blue color is the first to go on a SAmoled digitizer, as being the most sensitive. Then green. However, the lack of green indicates that something has gone wrong. You can have a look here, maybe it helps, but there is no backlight in SAmoled and I think you need to get the whole piece... There is one thread here.

Put your phone in a bag of white rice for a couple of days to dry it out, then see if that helped. A friends son dropped his phone in water, tried that, and it recovered.

[Q] - Water indicators?

Hey everyone!
Somehow, on my HTC Touch HD, quite a big spot showed up. It displays colors and everything, the touch screen works fine on the position of the spot, but the spot is just brighter than the rest of the screen (you can hardly notice it, if the background is dark, but it's quite noticable, if the background is white / bright, or if you're looking at it from an angle.) Now, I have no idea what this is, but to me, it looks like some sort of water damage at most.. Yet, I have no idea how my HD could have come in contact with enough water to create a spot like that. Now, I'd like to know, where the water indicators on the Touch HD are, and what color should they be, if the device hasn't come in contact with water, and what if it has come in contact with water. I only know for the one on the battery, and that one is white with red stripes all over it (in a pattern). I'd just like to figure out, if my device really has come into contact with water (steam perhaps). Oh, and btw, the spot doesn't change if I apply pressure to it, nor is it visible if the device is turned off.. I'm letting my phone sit in a dry spot, without the battery in it for now.. I'll see if it gets better in a few days.
Thanks in advance! Perhaps, I'll post a picture of the spot, if I'll be in the mood for charging my digital camera..
Just under the battery in the bottom corner is a strip.
If it is pink/red it has been in contact with water (thats the colour mine is )
I think there are a couple of internal one around.
Check the manual posted around here somewhere. It has the factory instructions on how to pull it apart/put it together and where all the strips go.
Well..The stripe under the battery, to be precise, under the battery pins is still white.. But the one on the battery is white, with red patterned stripes over it..But I heard the one on the battery should be like that.. Not sure though.. And I don't think I'll mess with opening the device up..If the spot doesn't go away in a few days, I'll contact the shop, and ask what the hell's wrong with my new (5 days old) device ..
Kinda afraid I'll have to pay muchos euros for the repair though Does anyone have any idea, how much does it cost to fix the screen?
Just tried turning on my device, and, I think it's getting a bit better to be honest...The spot had even brighter areas inside itself before, but now, the whole spot has the same brightness.
Complain now while you're still inside a week! But hopefully it will go within next few days (i'm just hoping, I got no clue what it is!)
Good luck
I had something similar with other devices, an air pocket between the digitizer (it looks like water but isnt) and the LCD, you may have applied too much pressure to the screen at some time. The spot can be pushed out, using you finger push the spot towards the outside of the screen, eventually it will return again if you apply too much pressure. This normally happens from the device being in pants pocket and when you sit or bend the pressure is increased. Also hold your LCD to the ear, if you hear a high pitch eeeeeee squeal then you your LCD is faulty. I would send it back for replacement.
Hello again!
After not using my device for 15 hours, the spot has almost vanished. It's still sliiiightly visible from an angle, but otherwise, it has really improved over the night. So, I really think it's a drop or two of water that's inside, which is slowly vaporizing now. Kinda reliefed! I'll report tomorow again, to tell you if the spot is still there or not! But I'm pretty sure that it's going to go away completly by itself.
Anyways, thanks for all the suggestions everyone, but, I think I'll let the device cure this one by itself .

Weird spot on the screen

Hi guys,
Today I noticed a very weird looking spot on the screen, or better just below it. It seems like there is some fluid just beneath the surface of the screen. I am always very careful with my HTC's, so I really don't believe I caused it... There was no pressure, I didn't drop it, I carry it in my shirt breast pocket or inside pocket of my jacket, without any other items. I really really dont know what happened - I pulled it out of it's leather sleeve, and it was there. This morning it wasn't.
Any idea if this is covered under warranty? Any idea what caused it?
Best Regards,
Lukas

I'd be STRAIGHT on to my supplier if mine looked like that! How does it look when the screen is on, cos let's face it, that's when it really matters, and probably how they'll view it when it comes to the warranty.
It's difficult to capture on a picture, but it's VERY visible when screen is on. Colors beneath the spot (wallpaper) seem washed out a little, so you get a very small color difference...
Something to do with cold weather and heating leading to condensation? I have no idea but I would ake a photo and email HTC AND your place of purchase ASAP to see if you could get a replacement, even if it doesnt bother you when the screen is on. It would bother me though, I think I havean almost OCD like quality when it comes to devices being perfect...
On a second thought, the leather case that comes with it is extremely tight, I couldn't remove my phone from it for the first few days till it stretched out! Do you think that might be enough pressure to do that to a screen?
I'd definitely get on to whoever you got this from then. That's not good!
call the waranty service ...
Mine had a weird spot as well right in the middle (and it appeared out of nothing like yours). Doesn't quite look like yours though (maybe you just caN't see it in the photo). Only noticeable at certain angles, and it looks like a colorful smudge. With the screen on it's even harder to notice it. When you press on it the "puddle" moves and shifts.
It looks like there is humidity under it. I went to the shop where I bought it, and they said that happens with some other touch screen phones, and is bound to disappear. The guy said it was due to the heat getting trapped bellow the screen.
In my opinion looks more like a humidity condensation thing.
Take it to the shop where you bought it, ask for an opinion. You still have loads of time to use the warranty, and if in 3 or 4 months it is still there or if that bothers you, just activate the warranty.
Thnx for the replies guys!

I don't think it's cold/warm/cold issue... Today I got up, put my phone in my inside jacket pocket, went down to my garage, got in the car, drove to work, into an underground garage and took the elevator into the office - phone wasn't exposed to cold today AT ALL. And it doesn't seem to be water, it's not very fluid, and there is no damp.

Did that immediatly after noticing the spot - my supplier asked me to e-mail him the pictures which I did, but he seemed reluctant to promise a replacement... He said that quote mechanical damage is not covered by HTC warranty unquote. This sucks - I didn't do anything wrong!

The spot on my phone is really visible, doesn't matter at which angle you look. Screen off is worse than with screen on. There is no color in the spot whatsoever and it doesn't seem to be movable (if I press hard I can make it bigger, but it returns to original size after release)... I'll keep it warm for the night, and I'll see tomorrow... I could measure it, and see if dimensions are changing when temperature rises or drops.

Nope... so no pressure changes either. Good thinking though...
WTF???
When I heat it for about ten minutes with a blow dryer it disapears. When I stop heating it, it reappears @ room temperature... WTF is this thing?

WTF indeed!?! When it dissapears does the display show correctly where it used to be?
Yes, you don't see anything wrong. For about two minutes. Then the spot reappears exactly in the center of the screen (where the 'wait' cursor/hourglass appears) and starts to grow until it has it's "original" dimensions.

Looking at the placement, it seems it's similar to mine, which is right in the center. Mine returns to the center if I press it as well.
The heat test you just did made me believe it has something to do with heat like the guy where I bought it said...
Here is another thread on the same subject (different phone)

I kept reading around, there are reports of the duct tape method.
Basically it works in the presumption the problem is both screens not keeping space between themselves. Just use duct tape over the wet patch, and pull it 20 or 30 times, and the screen should lift and the patch disappear. I'll try it and tell you if it worked.
Thank you! I'll try it as well.
Didn't work...
lol... I had to look for tape, but the tape method was unsuccessful as well on mine.
thnx anyways.
this is a capacitive touch screen so all are glass and the tape method won't work as there isn't anything to lift up unlike the resistive screen where there is a gap between the top plastic and the actual screen

[Q] Blue Lines on the Motorola Defy LCD?

Hey guys, I woke up today to find that my younger brother had totally screwed my Moto Defy's display. I do not know how he did it, I think he placed it under something really heavy. But anyways these blue lines and dots have appeared on the screen and they have been expanding since the past 10 hours or so continuously. First the line was really small as I have pointed out in the first picture but it has increased in height but now it is increasing its width as well. Can I do anything to stop it from increasing, I think 3 days down the road it will cover the screen completely at the rate at which it is increasing?
P.S What do I need to replace if the lines appear everywhere, the LCD right? The touch on my phone works flawlessly!

Hi,
Those are what technicians call "dead pixels." Which means that the small pixels on your device are either smashed up (individually), or does not light anymore.
Yes, you do have to replace the touch screen LCD of your device, unless your Defy is still covered by warranty and can be easily sent over to authorized service centers for repair, root or no root.

One of these would do the trick...
How that younger brother managed to damage the screen without causing damage to other parts of the phone is a bit of a mystery. There is an air gap between the glass/digitizer and the LCD display so he must have exerted quite a bit of force to bend (!) the glass down so far.
NO dont buy a new display.
Remove battery and close back cover -
then put the phone into a plastic bag and close it.
the put it into the refrigerator for 2-7 hours
then put your phone under you pillow and wait 2 hours or until it will be dry again.
then put your battery back on the phone and check the screen.
if its gone then yay, if not put it again ..
the guide is not mine and was on this forum.
WORKED for me like a charm and now every thing just fine...
My Defy has some blue splotches very similar to the OPs. It happened after my daughter dropped it causing a single crack in the corner of the screen...
The post about putting it in the fridge is interesting. I might give it a go. Do you have a link to the original post that you referred to?

look at the last post of page 1 and first of page 2.

and yes mine fell as well from 1 meter - display ok but was blue dead pixels which gone after that.

Mine has also developed these blue lines. I suspect from a ten hour drive in 36 deg heat within the car phone cradle. Then rapid humidity changes with air conditioning. Thanks for this post, I'm going to give the refrigerator (not freezer) a go and will report back.

Try this app(Dead Pixel Detect and Fix) from the Play Store. Run it overnight(5-6 hours) with a full battery and full brightness. Your display should be fine by morning. I have used it twice for the same issue. All the best. :good:

blue dots on the motorola Defy plus screen
Hi all
In the morning,I slipped my mobile from about 2 meters. Its screen got blue dots which worried me a lot. I started searching the solutions on many forums. At lost I got the solution from here. I kept my mobile in freezer about 2 hours and waited for one more hour to come to normal temperature. Miracle!.. All of a suddenly, blue dots gone.
As an engineer, I didn't believe this.just I made a trail before I replace the LCD screen. I would like to thank to the people who wrote the solution and who supports this forum.
I would be more happy if give the mystery details technically.

Any reply will be appreciated about drying it up.
EDIT:
SO I tried it again. And it got worse. The lines expanded. I think i have to replace the LCD.
Also I have tried the "Dead pixel detect and fix" app. It does nothing .

[Q]Is this a LCD or a digitizer problem?

I hate making new threads... but I've been looking at different places and haven't found the right answers to my questions... so yeah.
I have a GREEN LENS Defy MB525. It has gone through some trouble. It has some blue marks and such on the screen.
I found this and will be trying the method soon to see if the screen gets fixed. But, the owner of the phone had disassembled it to change the ear piece that was broken. Afterwards, the phone's screen doesn't take all the touches.
On the QWERTY screen, when you try to use the "Shift key or any of the letters (zxc...) on the phone, it takes the keys on top of them or below them.
I want to try to fix the phone but I don't know if it's a problem with the LCD that needs to be replaced, the digitizer or simply something else entirely.
The phone is running CM 10 2ndboot 2012-12-31 but it does the same on stock. I already tested it.
Any tips or help will be appreciated to finally have a working Defy
I also found this but since I don't have another screen to use for testing... well yeah...
I had such problems before after changing the speakerphone . All I did was to get a new digitizer and clean the inner screen using lighter fluid

Because you put the phone in the freezer you maybe destroy the digitizer but also be aware to check ALL the contacts and terminals from the motherboard for oxidization.

I haven't put it in the freezer yet.
I am thinking of doing it since it seemed to produce results in that thread.
I specifically said "will be trying the method soon".
Since it's such a strange advice I have yet to do it. I wanted to asked about my other problems before trying that.
The circles on the screen I am aiming to fix with the freezer thing have nothing to do with my problem since I've had those circles from way before the problem appeared.
It appeared when the phone was disassembled to change the earpiece. Please don't jump to conclusions so quickly. I am only considering that method to fix the circles in the screen since Auris posted in that thread favoring it.
Auris 1.6 vvt-i said:
Wrap it up in a plastic bag. Wrap it reeeeeeeally good, then duct tape it. After taking it out of the freezer, let it stay with the bag for at least 6 to 8 hours, 'cause when you take a cold object into a warm room, it condenses. Make sure your phone is well acclimated and there is no condense whatsoever. Then you can unwrap it and put the battery back in.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All that aside... since the freezer thing is not really relevant to the state of the phone as of writing this message...
Is there a way to know if the digitizer is busted? or the LCD? It was fine until my friend opened the phone to change the earpiece then the phone started showing the weird symptom where it wouldn't let him type any letter on the third line of the keyboard (zxc...). I tried the Android keyboard (AOSP) and swiftkey 3. The problem still persist even if I go to stock rom.
Let make a little light: The color problem relied to LCD and the keyboard malfunctioning is from digitizer. Because is improbable to broke both from one shot disassemble again, reattach CAREFULLY the digitizer and LCD and power on. Good luck.
no LED backlight on most of screen
Hello all,
I dropped my phone in a shallow puddle and put it in rice for a few days. All seemed well, everything works 100%. However the LED backlight isn't working on most the screen. I dropped it off at a repair shop. The took it completely apart, cleaned everything up and they saw some irreparable damage on the circuit board for the LED backlights. Absolutely everything else works 100%. I also have a week old poetic case and another slim case, the extra battery kit and there is no scratches on the screen or body of the v20. How much would I be able to get for it? I'm looking to move away from Android for a while. I've been playing with my coworkers iPhone and I dig it.
