Radio, Rom, Kernel, Theme, Etc. - Droid Incredible General

It's been a minute since I've used my dinc because I have been using my Thunderbolt almost exclusively.. soooo I was wondering what you guys are using or think is the best combo. Radio I'm the most curious about!
Love being back on the dinc due to its nice and small size!!
Thanks

My general advice; go with older stuff. With the exception of a few ROMs, the current crop appears to be some seriously jury rigged work that just barely works. I've yet to install ANY AOSP ROM that didn't end up self-destructing or failing from the first boot. I think WildStang ROMs are probably the best pieces of work currently out if stability and functionality are features that impress you.

Dude try joelz runnymede 3D Rom with radio 08.08 and tinys gingersense kernel. I'm loving this and think u will too.

All the Sense 3.0 ROMs run like molasses in January; SLOW as hell! 3D sure as hell isn't doing it any favors.

I'm using CM7 latest nightly, radio 11.x and tiny's incredikernel (10/8)
CM7 = It's quick, easily customization with android kitchen and with LP+ and custom dock it looks pretty snazzy
radio 11x = After trying all the radio's I find this one the most battery efficient, the GPS locks quick and data rate is excellent
( Note that differences between radio's are typically very small, I do believe this one is big enough to have me keep using it. Decide for yourself, everyone seems to have their own opinion on which is best )
tiny's incredikenel (10/8) = I actually just downloaded this one so not much of a review, but the quick charge and also the quick charge USB are big helps, not to mention custom voltages if you want to save a little bit more battery

Yes, that is the specific radio.

I have installed cm7.1 update and have tried every fix/ patch I can find in these forums to correct this horrible radio problem...I can't seem to get over two bars at any given spot. I have tried glazing new kernals, prl, radio, etc...what is the best combination to run cm7.1...any help with this would greatly. Be appreciated....thanks in advance....oh ya I was having problems with wireless tethering. Also but was able to fix that with placing a tether folder in root that was missing

The sense roms' signal bars are a little more generous than aosp. go to settings about phone and status and look at the dBm's for an accurate reading of signal strength.
On cm7 I usually stay between one and two bars, whereas on sense I would read up to four in the same areas, with the same dBm reading (no difference in actual signal strength).

I'm sitting at -94 to -97 dbm and 0asu....is that about normal?....I switched to a savage kernal the other day which seems to be helping other issues but radio is still an issue ...thanks for your help
sent from my Narly turbocharged EVO running CM7.1 with 22 lbs. of boost

what i'm trying to get across is that you don't have a radio issue. The same dBm will show more bars on a sense ROM than an aosp one.
If you'd like, flash a sense ROM and an aosp one. Then take an average in the same area over a period of time of what you're dBm's are. You shouldn't see much of a difference because roms have nothing to do with signal strength.
Edit: there us no 'normal' dBm number because there are so many variables to signal strength (distance from tower, humidity, elevation etc.). If you start to drop calls then you have a problem, if not, you're fine.

Gotcha....thanks for the insight!!!

Yeah you're not going to drop a call or get slow data from that, it is rather low though but nothing to worry about. Once it goes past 100 you should start to worry but again it'd still have to be significantly lower for all the bad stuff to start happening.
Besides all that, what makes you think this is a radio problem instead of just not-so-great coverage?

Just had some issues with wifi, calls, 3g/4g coverage , market connection( even on wifi)

[POLL] What ROM are you using?

Just a basic poll to get some idea of what ROMs seem to be the popular ones here. I also feel that this poll can help those wanting to dive into the world of ROMs in choosing the right direction.
Aside from voting on what ROM you're currently using, why don't you tell us about it...
Most importantly are what kind of battery life you're getting for how much you use.
What is the performance like?
What you feel this ROM offers that others don't.
How can this ROM be better?
Thanks guys!
So, um...where's the poll? I'm using CM6 myself.
It's the first ROM I've used on my device. It's very quick as compared to the stock 1.47 build (of course). Seeing FPS of 52 on my HW002 Novatek. Confirmed that I have 5-pt multitouch (though already knew from the ADB command before I flashed). Linpack consistently at 39/40 (not overclocked).
Battery life so far seems pretty good, on par with stock, though I've been on a couple of phone calls this morning which is atypical for me (I don't really use my phone as a phone I mostly text/web/e-mail etc. - I *might* use 150min a month of calling).
EDIT
Ah ha! There it is.
EDIT2
1236 in Quadrant (again, no overclock, no special performance tweaking of any kind)
Fresh 1.0.1.
Getting about 20-22 hours with moderate use (2-3 hours voice calls).
Super fast! Getting about 52FPS with Netarchy's kernel (no overclocking) with my 003 Nova.
Aside from the badass FRESH boot up screen? I like how dedicated Flipz is to his work and how bugs gets squashed right away. It's stable and everything works.
Could use Froyo and I would like to use launcher Pro rather than Sense with it.
Using DC v3.2.3
With the stock kernel and SetCPU profiles set up I was getting pretty close to 20 hours out of my battery with moderate use.
The performance is great. Very quick with few lags. Couldn't ask for much more.
The one main tool that this ROM offers that others don't is DConfig. Having the ability to easily set up profiles to optimize the phones performance and battery is a valuable tool.
Can't wait for DC Froyo!
So for the ones I like the best are Cyanogen,Fresh, and EVO-OLOGY ROM. Using CyanogenMod 6 right now seems a little buggy, but so far i like it the best.
You need to add Yay for Juggs Rom up there. I am using his FrEak RoM, with ADW launcher and a mixture of Google apps and sense things. Very solid and zero issues.
I been following the 2.2 roms, betting waiting on V10, but I have the files for CM6. I may slap that one on for the weekend after I backup my current Rom.
Baked SNacks 9.7 with launcher pro +
battery life is GREAT ! 19 + hours per charge ( with OC )
everything works simple great !
i do have the CM nightly in nano to do some testing
Baked snacks 9.7 with netarchy kernel 3.7.3c I think. this is smoother than damage and battery life is great!
Really? In development? How about general or Q&A?
Buuuutttt: I'm using Fresh 1.0.1. WiMax is keeping me from switching to CM6.
CM6 but...
I'm using CM6 myself and being an Android n00b in general I still love it so much more than the stock experience. Coming from webOS I was excited at the idea of using custom roms and it hasn't let me down.
Currently I'm noticing the incredible performance increase of CM6 just in terms of smoothness and app loading times. Battery life seems fine to me (unplugged from charger at 830am and will need to charge around 430pm. My only complaints would be the lack of some quality email/calendar/feed widgets that come pre-loaded. Also I've flashed an updated version of the rom twice now and each time the cameras work great upon first use but then next time I try to use they "cannot connect."
WiMax is no big deal b/c I have Wi-Fi at my office and apartment. Would be nice to have in downtown Houston but can wait.
Would be willing to try DamageControl but wasn't sure if it's running of Froyo and has any speed issues. We'll see...
I'm using Fresh Evo 1.0.1 with netarchy kernel 3.7.3c. Waiting with baited breath for CM6 official release.

Hows your 4g, I only get more than 1 bar in the heights.
Snacks 9.6
Easily 40+ hours per charge, with 2 hours of surfing, 30 minutes of voice, 30 minutes of GPS.
I'm waiting for BuglessPete v0.5 or CM6 RC release.
Cyanogen to date...
Cyanogen - snappy little rom with great battery life and nightly builds! This combined with Rom Manager Premium, I have the option to locate, download, backup, flash and do a/b comparisons in minutes, with disaster recovery for the nOOb I am. DC comes in second but no technical "reports", just "seat-o-the-pants" kinda usage/feel...
I am running Cyanogen till DC 3.5 is released.
Sprint is 2 weeks out from Froyo on EVO.
I just rooted last night, started with the rooted stock ROM, then flashed Fresh, then DC, then CM6. Now I'm back on Fresh as I want to start simple before I jump away from all my HTC apps.

1.47 Rooted! Beat that! W00t!!
Seriously though, I'm using this one because I just got a Airave (50% off) and I could not connect to it using CM6, Fresh, or BakedSnack. I couldn't connect using any rom to be exact.
On another thread here, there was talk about changing the EVRC and roaming settings to get better call quality. Beware! Screwing with these will leave you with no connection to the Airave.
Back to the topic. I plan on trying out the latest CM6 tonight, but the stock root is working well for me.
I'm currently using Cyanogen's Nightly Builds of CM6 for the EVO. It's not perfect but I've gotten it customized to where it's everyday-kind-of-usable to me. I imagine as they move forward the it gets optimized, my gripes will go away (like the mising market apps, the slower than stock speeds, etc). I'm okay with it for now.
Before that, I had just begun using Fresh 1.0.1. Very stable and feature-rich... no problems with it at all. Memory management could have been better. This has been the only ROM where I've seen my memory dip below 70MB.
And before Fresh, I'd been using DamageControl 3.2.3. This was for me, the ROM to beat. Best battery life, snappy responsive system, great memory management, great support, nice features. I did find a couple of bugs (with Handcent) and it sure could have used one or two os Fresh's features (like the 270 rotation) but it was still the ROM to beat.

Fastest 2.x ROM for 32b?

Hey guys I know this question quite possibly gets asked all of the time. I'm looking for the fastest and most stable rom for my 32b.
Here is what I need to know.
Best rom, radio and spl combo.
I wouldnt mind it being cyanogen based as im a huge fan of the power control widget in the notifications bar and some of the options.
Doesnt matter to me what version is it, as long as its 2.1 or higher. Reason? App compatibility.
So please. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. thanks again and sorry for the "n00b" question.
I just put Frosense by Rushness on and it is the fastest I have ever used. I have ezTerry's non-engineered spl and the alternate radio which gives +14 MB RAM
Sent from my Frosense G1 using xda Premium
I am using Frosense by Rushness & i think it's fastest rom that i ever see!
I actually just installed cyanogenmod 5.0.8 with the 2708+ mod for it and its extremely fast. I'll have to make an nandroid backup and see what frosense is all about.
Anyone know rom witch i can run Angry Birds without "laggs"?
Try an older version. I personally do not play the game or care how it runs. My main concern is how to make my phone run well on a day to day basis.
Cyanogenmod with the 2708 radio, and swapper2 using a 64mb swap partition has proven to be the fastest yet for me. All of my apps work and although i had to downgrade zeam to make it work with Eclair, i'm still happy with it.
everything is snappy. My widgets work just fine and the overall experience and usability of my phone is what i would expect it to be.
I would love a froyo rom and i may try frosense in the future. for now im content with what i have.
Froyo for Trout is very fast.
If your looking for a super fast GB rom use mine. It has 60Mb of free space, aways 20MB or ram free. Look for Nomy's CM7.1 2.3.7 in the Dev fourm. There's no swap,or MTD. It's under 40MB Zipped. Hopefully will be under 40Mb unzipped

I would love to use GB. How does it rate in terms of speed and battery compared to eclair? I'm looking for the best overall experience.

Try Cyanogen 5.0.8 2708+
Aleks. Thats what im currently using with the updated biffmod kernel. Works great!
Wondering if the 6.1 2708+ would have the same success plus the little extra i like like notification bar power control and updated zeam by using froyo.
If i could get that and keep the same nice batterylife and speed of 5.0.8 2708+ i would be one happy camper
Still wouldnt mind a froyo+ rom. looks like when it comes to speed and stability its either going to be biffmod or froyobylaszlo. any thoughts?
xtreme-froyo-1.9.5-signed.zip
Google that rom or find Xtreme froyo, this ROM is best 2.2 I've found for G1...The battery drain is okay, in Biff it was faster, and in Ginger the battery was awful. I tried 2.1 ROMs but they seemed sluggish.
Seems everyone likes froyo by laszlo as the best feature/speed/battery balanced rom. does this do better?
never seen it here so i figured i may as well ask.
froyobylaszlo 5.2, spl latest, swap 128 +512 mb ext4 - my option
it seem to be fast!
What kernel? What compcache settings? Etc.
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
Just curious. Since i get great results (performance is satisfactory and battery life is great) with the biffmod kernel over the ezgb kernel in cm5, couldn't the same be said for almost any other rom so long as i use that kernel? The only downside ive had with said kernel is i cannot take 3mp pictures. The camera is sort've crap anyway so i can live with 2mp.
The reason i ask is because i would like to bump it up to froyo but would like comparable performance with about the same battery. Our am i just living a pipe dream?
What I need out of my G1 is battery life. I pretty much use it only for email (wifi and mobile). I've tried pretty much every rom out there for G1, even went all the way back to Donut assuming its battery needs would be minimal. I saw ezTerry's gingerbread and thought, hmm, I'll install it just to see what its like. I assumed it would be very hungry and I'd go back to something lighter. I was very pleasantly surprised.
I've had it running for about a week and a half now. I have wifi on all the time, and the stock email client is setup with a fairly busy exchange server account (push). The gmail client is also setup with my main gmail account.
I am averaging 30 hours like this between charges.
I should say that I do not do alot of voice, perhaps 20-30 minutes per day (on a busy day), so this is strictly an internet device for me, no games, not alot of surfing.

Roms, Roms, Roms What is the best

What roms would you guys recomend i use, im currently using Cyangeon Mod 7 but i would like to know if there are any others like that
Thanks Sam
Do you or do you not want blur? If you do want blur, maybe try aura or alien. If you don't, stay with CM.
Try Aura debloat version. Has almost all blur crap removed. Faster than CM7 also except on boot up.
Assimilated via WinBorg 4G
Alien: most stable and best battery life of the roms I've tried
Aura: lean running and most updated of the existing roms, although battery life is slightly worse than Alien. Darkside is really an extension of Aura in my book and it's the rom I currently use.
CM7: I love this rom for all the cool new customizable features, but no fingerprint scanner is a deal breaker. Someone said "some people forget there was life before the fingerprint scanner", well there was life before electricity too. I don't want to give up on one of the most convenient aspect of my phone when there are other alternatives.

I hate threads like this and the title makes me hate it even more.
Atrixn00b, try uninstalling facebook, I've heard it screws your battery pretty hard.
also, install watchdog and check if you have any other rogue apps
Does red pill have a big theme base like cm7 and is it as user friendly?
Depends what you use for phone for. All the de-blur roms I used broke contacts and corporate email, sometimes even sms. Seemed like the majority of them took an exisiting rom, removed the blur .apk applications, and broke a lot of usability for some speed.
I think the whole fastest rom thing is a bit of bs. Almost every rom ive ran has been speedy aside from the official 4.5.91, or froyo with all the ATT apps installed.
Alien4 was the last rom and probably the most stable, also the best battery. Speed is terrific, near CM7. All around the best rom imo. Better corporate mail client than CM7 too w/ search functionality.
CM7 was not stable for me but showed a lot of promise, I had dialer issues and some weird app hangs. Felt like I was constantly needing to reboot to get things working again. Looking forward to future releases though.
Okay yh it does break some functionality but blur did do much for me anyways as i just replaced it all with handcent and stuff like that so it doesnt bother me much about lost functionality, but i tried alien and didnt really like it tbh im using cm7 because its what i have been recomended multiple times

I don't believe that for a second! I think auras battery is phenomenal as good as any other rom probably even better, but just like any new rom you flash. you gotta callibrate your battery of course or you may have poor performance.

I don't really have poor battery performance. Right now I am at 1 day and 6 hours with 5hr 34min of screen time and battery of 28%. I just mean that when I was on Alien I had slightly better battery life.
I don't keep track of statistics because of generally excellent battery life. However at the end of my work day I find Alien to be slightly better.
Anyway, with the latest Faux kernels battery is phenomenal, I'm not sure how much the minor differences between roms would matter. They generally all have excellent battery life and stability. Many many thanks to Faux and the Aura/Darkside/Alien rom developers.
I changed my radio from 33p to 30p. Now it could use two days one charge.

which cm7 (mod?) is the most stable?

I am looking to try cm7 for the first time.
I guess I have a few choices:
official, batf
neutrino
and atrix weeky builds
I have read weekly 4 has issues with wifi, which neutrino is based off of.
Any cm7 have stable wifi? and stable 3g?
looking for stability and battery life, and I read great things of the cm7 battery life
Thanks
One of the best cm7 builds is RedPill hybrid. really recommend you at least try it. It didn't like batf that much.

No problems with WiFi on Weekly 4 here.
I have the wifi problems while using Weekly 4 and Neutrino (based on weekly 4). You can "solve" the problem by leaving wifi on 24/7, but it does add to battery drain. That said, I am a heavy, heavy user and easily make it a full day (3 hours of screen on, 3-5 hours of wakelock from listening to music) using Neutrino 1.4S 1Ghz with wifi set to always be on. I have no 3G/4G signals with either Weekly 4 of Neutrino. As for which of those two is better - totally personaly preference. I am a "barebones" kind of person, so I run Neutrino.
Official Ba2tF is rock solid, and has no outstanding, widespread issues that I am aware of.
Nightly 20 had an issue for me where if I tried to use any of several of the GApps, it would cause my phone to lose its data connection, re-establish it, lose it, re-establish it, etc. If i close the offending program (Maps, Talk, and Youtube) or just hit the home button so that the offending program was not the focus application, everything would be fine again, until I used any of the three offending programs again. This problem doesn't seem to be "widespread", but has been reported and talked about for many different phones running that nightly (check the S2 forums and the Evo 3D forums for example).
Tl;DR -
Rock solid?
Ba2tF
Rock solid if you don't have the wifi problem or can deal with slight battery drain due to having to have wifi on all the time?
Weekly4 / Neutrino (personal preference)
I don't really see much of a point in Nightly 20 at the moment. It is SOLID if you don't have the data disconnect issue with certain GApps. But the release is old (from before Thanksgiving), so the Weekly4 and Neutrino are newer in terms of commits. So I don't really see much of a point in sitting between Ba2tF and Weekly4 - especially with the data disconnect issue (if you are unlucky enough to have it).
Hope that helps
Thank you VERY much for the in-depth explanations!
So you actually dont have any 3g/4g connections? I think there was some sort of tweak by the dev of Neutrino posted on one of the end pages to attempt to fix the data.
The previous poster has no wifi issue but you do, hmm I guess its not applicable to EVERY device. Or wiredpirate is just lucky haha
I may be leaning to batf right now. What do you mean by "so the Weekly4 and Neutrino are newer in terms of commits" ?
+1 for Redpill-Hybrid has been the most stable for me

Rom with good wifi reception?

Using virtuous affinity at the moment and not liking the wifi speed at all (2 signals at a distance of 6 meters?)
I remember using one of the MIUI rom or sense rom which gave really good wifi connection, don't know what's the issue but my sister's I9001 is picking wifi at great distance and not mine + the speed is really slow...
DO you guys have a rom in mind which i can flash for better wifi connection?
EDIT: also some suggestions about runny vs bliss would be very appreciatd since i'm not a big sense user..
You can try RCMix3D, I'm always having 4 bars when near my router and a little less when moving away.
Maybe there is something wrong with the WiFi antenna.
The antenna is located in the cover of the battery.
Take out the cover and clean the metal contacts.
Put it back and see if it made a difference.
It's the 1st thing you should try.
If this doesn't help, check for a radio that matches your model, see also if a matching RIL is needed.
This most probably is a radio issue...flash the correct radio based on your current RIL..
Also think it's a radio problem. Flash the correct one and RILs and averything will be ok.
And for example, if you flash something like Virtuous Quattro or IceColdSandwitch, you may get low bars on the indicator, but it doesn't mean the signal is bad.
I'm running ARHD 6.3.2 with 12.65.60.29U_26.14.04.28_M Radio at the moment.I always have 3 to 4 bars wifi connection even when im in the room next to my office.
The Rom runs smooth and stable without having any problems at all.
Been using rcmix3d for the last couple of months and wifi reception has always been strong

Dont be fooled by the WIFI indicator bars, As i understand it AOSP based ROMs use a different algorithim to display the strength which results in an apparent lowering of the signal strength as long as it connects and works i play little or no attemtion to the bars.
Yes I would say it's a radio issue, unless it's posted as a bug in the ROM by other users. check the forums for the rom, otherwise, flash new radio WITH CORRESPONDING RIL!!

I agree with @ghostofcain, if your wifi is working fine, don't bother too much about the numbers of bars.
I had my best wifi experience with the AndroidRevolution HD 7.0.0 Rom.
maybe you really should bother about your Radio..

best way to see the signal strength is this:
*#*#4636#*#*
and then wifi information -> wifi status
there you've got the signal strength in dB wich is a bit more comparable than "i've got only two bars".
good tip using this test-number;
is the RSSI value the wifi signal strength ?
Yes. RSSI stands for Received Signal Strength Indication. Wikipedia has an article about it if you want more information.
