Hi, i want to compare the performance, advantages of cyanogenmod vs sony official firmware 4.0.1.A.0.283. Sony take note to improve the system in the next updates!
1ºThe gallery:
With the las firmware 4.0.1.A.0.283 the gallery is very slow, and opening a photo takes about 4-5 seconds with a class 10 SD card.
With cyanogenmod the photos instantly open. Even my girlfriend mini pro (SK17i) is faster than my arc opening photos.
2ºQuality of sound in calls:
I have reported in othet threads, problems with the sound with the phone in 2G mode only. I have noticed breaks in sound and clicks during a call.
With Cyanogen the problem is not present. Please sony fix it in the official firmware!
File with a recording of the problem: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=FC0C7EEG
In the recording you can listen 6 tones, the 3 last are distorted, this also occurs during the conversation with the voice.
3ºOptions:
In cyanogenmod 7.1 there are profiles for the sound (yes like in all the old sony ericsson phones).
Why don´t sony implement this?
4ºBattery:
With the official firmware the min CPU freq is set to 245 Mhz, with cyanogen is 122 Mhz. This means lower battery consumption at iddle state.
5ºApps still open even you have closed it before.
Not with cyanogenmod
6ºThe sound recorder
It comes with android by default, but there is no shortcut in our arc! and can´t use it!
7ºMusic player in the lockscreen
8ºCamera options
Posibility to select the quality of the photo.

Does anyone really select anything but the highest quality?
CM7.1 much smoother than SE stock... but CM7 won't have the SE features like xLOUD, bravia engine etc... but well you can't have everything in the world...

Seems like you dont know that Sony's rom hardly gives a 1MB pic while in cyanogen it aroun 2~3 MB
The problems i want SE to fix are
A.) Camera image size (i hate cyanogen ui) and some options too like contrast, sharpness etc
B.) Option to disble light sensor and have fixed brightness
C.) Status bar widgets
D.) Locscreen and volume button music controls
E.) Swipe to remove notifications
F.) Options to change camera settings while recording video ( like flash off, exposure etc)
G.) Option to pickup calls using Back button and hanging up by menu button
H.) Others i forgot

Does it mean that CM7.1 is way better than the current stock ROM? It would also be nice if you guys can post some advantages of the stock rom over CM7.

I prefer stock user interface otherwise I would go over to cm straight away. In cm everyuthing is just plain and black and the home launcher is rubbish. I like the stock one.
Advantages of stock rom...!!!
1. Better keyboard...!!!
2. Better looks...!!!
3. Supports many languages...!!!
4. Supports Devnagri fonts(personal requirement)...!!!
5. Facebook notification on the screen...!!!
6. Has timescape that notifies everyone reading your status that you have an Xperia...!!!

Things I miss from Stock ROM
1. Launcher (Silky smooth)
But I got it from here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=973245
But it is not latest launcher. Can someone provide latest launcher please ??
2. Camera application.
3. Bravia Engine and xLoud
4. Music Player.
Things better in cyanogenmod :
1. Performance ( Overclocked to 1.5 GHz by default)
2. Themes
3. Apps can be moved to SD card even if not allowed
4. Latest android 2.3.7
please put BE to cm7...

i don't think they can ever port the proprietary software unless SE tells them to, which will never happen.

Bravia Engine, Camera app, HDMI, xLoud, slide keyboard, in the other hand its a heavy ROM, and resources like GPU, CPU and RAM are not well used, some lags on launcher, slow system some times, etc... I personally prefer pure android feel and experience allied with a very light responsive and no bloatware than a rom customized by brands... For me its like windows, no one wants ASUS programs or HP programs in their brand new computer, I brought an android device, so I want to experience android as close as possible from its pattern...

I totally agree, the stock .368 is amazingly smooth, bugless and stable. Three parameters I prioritise very high, a fast reliably phone that just works and looks good at the same time
I have installed doomkernel, but the increased performance from overclocking is only to me really noticeable when browsing heavy web pages. Everything runs smooth at 1GHz comparing it to 1.6GHz.
Have to say I would miss things like Bravia engine and the camera app so I will be holding off on upgrading to CM7.1 for now. I've rooted with locked bootloader, given it a clean up and I'm happy. Might install Doomkernel though and overclock very soon.
it is CM wins~~~once you choice CM's rom, you are not interesting in any other rom, include SE's
cm 7.1 is fast but i have issues with camera flash synch... =( it's not flashing when it needs so the picture taken is all black ... does anybody know solution about this problem ?

It's not correct to generalize that all people would not want ASUS, HP programs in their new laptops
Not everyone is like you, many prefer brand customized ROM, that's what makes a difference between devices

I NEED to find the best ROM out there for the G2/Desire Z! let me know what you think it is!!
-Post what rom it is.. INCLUDING Build Number
-Explain why it is the best!
-Post a screenshot of your favorite screen i.e wallpaper..favorite widget etc..
If you could, let me know how good battery life is and stability!
-Looking for an everyday rom.. if possible
-Thanks!
I've tested several ROMs on my DZ and now I use Vision Unity.
It's basicly a 2.1/3.0 Sense hybrid ROM giving you real eye-candy.
In the latest version (1.29.0) I found some bugs/disadvantages:
- the homescreen does not rotate on keyboard open
- sometimes it lags a bit
- it takes about 300 MB ram after start, leaving you just about 70MB free (other roms are much better in this criteria)
- I experienced already few times sudden phone restart (phone just lying on table, no aggresive apps run like 3d games etc, and after few hours I take the phone and it asks for PIN) = pretty critical if you wait for an important call.
but among the roms I've tried, this seems far the best if you decide to have HTC Sense. If you can miss sense, stick to CM7, there are really cool features like finetuning the display auto brightness intensity levels (really killer feature to battery life!)
I enjoy Virtuous Sense 2.0.0 because I find it to be consistently fast and responsive, everything works for me all the time, and I still have enough ram to run a couple of apps in the background, unlike every sense 3.0 rom/hybrid I've tried.
Highly highly recommended.

LMFAO.
Cyanogen MOD 7 RC 1 or if your so inclined, nightly build #156.
- So far after testing a few ROM I've been back to CM7. Why? Once installed and running and even with keep all my favourite apps open and running in the background, I still manage to keep about 80mb of ram and CPU usage is usually between 2% and 82% with an average of 4 or 5 programs running. Ok a bit excessive I know but it still works.
I have custom memory script running that's available here on XDA and various other gadget. Battery life is usually fairly consistent with 1day 9hours of use. I use the device quite a bit in a day.
Power saving options: Brightness is set to 20% only, Juice Defender installed.
Running background application is limited to my email mostly unless I'm doing some work. Most of the time email, exchange, Facebook and twitter are sync.
I'm using Launcher Pro with the license for my main interface. Here are some screen captures for your pleasure.

Personally, my favorite ROM is MIUI.us
The stock Music app in it, is my favorite music app by far, I especially love how it not only gets the lyrics, but also scrolls them karaoke style with the song. It also has a nice theming system, and a great built in theme. Everything overall looks nicer than stock Android.
Another great thing about it is the status bar, you can enable/disable USB Mass Storage using an on/off slider in the notifications, and I love the way the switches work in the status bar.
Then there's the stock Launcher, which is much nicer than the stock Android launcher in my opinion, though I still replace it with Go Launcher, again, my personal favorite.
If you're looking for a responsive, nice looking, and user friendly ROM, MIUI.us would be my suggestion. It also has a nice backup feature with their servers. You just need to make an MIUI account. Not sure if it's still necessary, but back when I did it, I had to go to the chinese MIUI website and use Google Translate to make my account <_<

The best rom is hardest to define because it's really up to personally preference. MIUI? Sure if you're into that whole thing, but frankly I have trust issues with Chinese tech companies for reasons that have been in the news here and there.
Cyanogenmod is a great AOSP rom even though it's not 100% AOSP it's quick, intuitive, and has lots of options that would allow you to customize it as you want.
There are other roms such as OTA roms that have been made that are also very quick, but not quite as intuitive and they are not as easily customized as some other roms.
Now we get into Sense. There are ports of great roms from other devices that may have a minor bug here and there. Unity is a great rom but I know it needs work on it simply because of little bugs here and there, lack of ram of the Vision, and the battery drain of 1.31 is not so appealing. These roms do not perform as well as Sense roms made for the Desire Z, how ever you do not have some sense 3.0 features that make Sense so much more enjoyable to use.
I currently run Virtuous Sense v2.0.0 and it's a very quick rom, but it lacks the eye candy that we all would love with Unity. However what I love about the sense community is that there are many themes and many ways to enhance sense with add-ons here and there which I have done.
I want to clearly state that this is just my opinion and you should try out the roms for your self to get your own opinion and know your personal preference what appeals to one person is not always the same as the next.
Virtuous unity 1.31
Just test it , good for daily use

Actually, I'm now running the "Virtuous Sense v2.0.0 :: Enhanced & Optimized Stock ROM (2.42.405.2)". I miss the Sense 3.0 features, but I can try to flash some available mods. Especially the brightness setting in the quick setting.
But it's a small tax for a stable ROM without restarts.
Hey, i just want to make this quick. I am trying to build a ROM here for X8, and one thing that makes me really think is whether to make it faster or look nicer. The basic is simple, it's just like in PC, you want performance, sacrifice the looks, you want nice screen, you sacrifice speed. Well, everybody know our X8 is not so fast there, that's i wanted to know whether you guys like performance or graphic quality?
Just answer the poll above. Thanks
Regards,
aldee_s
Thanks for the voter
Many people appreciate a ROM that is fast, but also visually appealing, it's a very hard mix to get right, i myself am very minimalistic with my phone, anything unnecessary is uninstalled from my phone, i.e. maps, sound recorder etc. i never have games installed on my phone.
Beans.
for me,performance is on the first place.
but it'ill be better that we can set it up on the phone.
like a configuration menu to set between appereance and performance.
so we can choose it by our demand.
Fast.

@beans
yes, its very hard, and im here trying to find the best setting, and maybe i could release rom with different configuration, but maximizing performance while retains good graphic is pretty hard.
@xcal
yeah, that is very confienient, but currently if you want it like that, you can use dithering feature, but the graphic wouldn't be as good as if we use maximum graphic configuration when we build the rom
@nigi
thanks
@ithunter
well, you can ask doixanh for it. i think doixanh rom is good enough, i score 409 in Quadrant (3D Test). while my built ROM is 403, not so far i guess, and my rom is using quality setting.
EDIT= oops, sorry, it seems my rom is configured with performance setting

no, the graphic quality that i mean is the color that is displayed on the screen, currently, the ROMs out there is only using 16 bit color, even though our phone is capable showing 24 bit color.
I don't think that our phone display is capable of 24bpp. Look at surface flinger and its display hardware component. They use color depth information from the kernel's MSM framebuffer driver, not fix at 16bpp.
I think X8 screen is able to deal with 16bpp only.
really? but the datasheet that i found, X8 is using 16.7 million color display? isn't that 24/32 bpp?
EDIT= is there any way i can test colour banding in Eclair? well, in gingerbread its very easy, just look into Theme Chooser, and if we didn't use dithering, the colour banding is obvious.
EDIT2= dx, i just build the ROM with BOARD_NO_RGBX_8888 and that 16BPPSurface is disabled (commented), and i saw difference in color showed in my screen, really, even though i have partial colour blind, i still can find the difference.
EDIT3= the scrolling seems smoother, well the ROMs i use so far if the background color when you scroll is black, the text will become blurry when i scroll it, but now the blur is reasonable. or maybe its just my phone?
EDIT4= ah men, it makes the screen-off animation really slow, do you know what caused it? does using 32BPP is really have that much impact?
Ginger Dx is balanced... Its fast and it looks nice with sense 3.
Im prefer FAST Roms
it may start another war here but stock rom is by far the best as long as speed and appearence concerned for x8..
what do you mean by war?
the new stock ROM (2.1.1.A.0.6 or 2.1.1.C.0.0) sucks at 3D, even though the 2D score is better, its still very inconvinient to play HD games on those stock ROM. Also, the stock ROM doesn't have Electron Beam (Screen on/off) animation. I think some people like Gingerbread because of that feature, even dx likes it (stated in froyobread thread)
it seems my eyes is the problem, but there is a performance drop when i try to use 32 bpp.
fast. btw r u building CM7(Gingerbread)?

Hi Guys, many ROM all over this forrum many people somtimes feel confused about all this roms.
I want so say that for my personal opinion we should look for the development of the stock missing things that we all would like to have in this phone.
I recently tried a MIUI ROM from erenz1202 and i really love it, so for me the dreamed ROM should have the following.
1- DLNA
2- faster Startup
3- improved Peformance, Smoothness and Battery
4-Better memory management (stock too laggy)
5- Auto LED Flash (For at least take pics in dark)
6- Radio (i think it's not possible)
7- Apps2SD
8- BRAVIA (I do not care)
9- Stability
Count on my donation if this is possible...
And you, what's your dreamed ROM?
Thanks
Have got mine running wolfs rom with doomlords kernel. Smooth, fast and my battery lasts two days under normal conditions.
Have modded the rom to my liking, and set up link2sd with 1gb partition. I don't see my x10 getting any better really.
My only wish is to be able to change songs with long hold of volume buttons when screen is off like I could with 2.2.

Less useless tweaks and better battery and stability.
Performance ROMS are usually placebos on battery and stability e.g phone becomes laggy after 12 hours without reboot whereas uptime for stock was almost 56 hours.

Dear XDA developers, modders and users i am curious to know do you like more performance and stability of android 2.3 and older or looks and apps of android 4.0 and newer.
I prefer GB roms because for everyday use ICS/GB roms destroy my already weak battery, are slow and unstable imo , also when i download a rom i remove stuff i dont need and add stuff i do.
I edit roms but never publish them as my original work

Well i havent got time for making videos now ,but if you are interested in my roms then i do the following:
* depending on the rom size and features
- gallery
- fm radio
- latinIME
- tts and picotts
- some fonts
- alarms, notifications and ringtones
- gapps if available
- cwm ( i used revolutionary so cwm is not necessary
- cmwallpapers
- bootanimation.zip
+ file manager
+ quickpic
+ keyboard ( using hackers keyboard in this moment )
+ beats sometimes
+ custom ringtones and notifications
+ sometimes i edit the framework-res
conclusion - nothing complicated but by removing apps, fonts , boot animation i shave off +- 20mb of rom size and speed up boot to around 35-40 seconds
and in my barebones rom (cm7 based) i have removed all apps that are safe to remove except :
-music
-camera
-mms
-[App that ive possibly forgot to mention]
and in total my barebones rom has 50mb which i use when i fck up something ( my ubuntu didnt recognize android 4.0 as a usb drive so i couldnt change the rom ; when stuck in bootloop ) because it installs faster and its a good alternative as a rom to give to my younger sister
Because its faster i also change the default wallpaper in roms that i download
Curently i use TouchWiz with sympfinity kernel V4.5 its fast and battery efficient ( and FABULOUS )
P.S. yes wildfire is still good to go but development in xda is ceasing and it has no gpu. Technology is becoming better every day so i will update in the near future but wildfire is a legend and should not be forgotten
Well we still got some people doing good work, have you tried the AOKP light continued by wasimk32 ? I run it smooth and fine with smartass and preety much 5 hungry apps installed other than gapps; I'm only using it for about 5 days now but i did not feel the need to run supercharger, wich is more than i can say for latest gingerbread stock cm considering aokp is ics based.
Also if you want looks+even better performance you can give JellyBread a try made by wasimk32 aswell, i installed it and when i saw my willy fly troughout the apps and menus like a galaxy S2 i almost teared up a bit xD.
Bottom line: I think we can get probably another decent year where we can say willy kept up before we start using it for only its phone-text functions .

Definitely YES.
if you have to ask then i wouldn't. i don't gain anything over a good 4.1.2 rom in my opinion. i don't use all the spen features, the battery is the same, and i miss the dark email color. i don't use touchwiz, and other than a new settings menu i couldn't tell any difference from a customer 4.1.2 with perseus kernel.
After a month of usage, here are my impressions:
Firstly, my N2 has Never been rooted- though I did have that 'Your phone has been modified; cannot update' bug. Yet, when the firmware was available OTA, it updated fine.
After 2 days of fooling around, memory usage didn't seem stable so I formated my phone.
Likes:
1. I can move some apps to SD. I'm a big media user & space is important.
2. Some integrated apps can be turned off. Maybe a minimal option, but welcome nonetheless.
3. Battery & memory optimization appears somewhat improved. I think apps open quicker & my media in the Gallery refresh faster- though this could be all in my head.
4. Sometimes I use Samsung's default Video Player & now a Samsung Link icon is present during playback- it's quite useful to quickly stream the content I'm watching to my Smart TV.
Dislikes:
1. Wakeup, turning on the phone, & restarting appears 2 seconds longer.
2. On low battery, I cannot manually adjust screen brightness.
3. The Video Player content list is now a blinding white background, unlike the Gallery which is black. (Don't understand why there isn't a option to change to a 'dark theme.')
4. New apps preloaded like Knox which I have no intention of running/using.
In closing, I do not use Touchwiz (on Nova), the default music app, the camera app, & yet to own a Gear device- so no impressions here.
I updated because I know the Note 2 is a VERY capable phone in terms of its hardware- I love this phone, no firmware will bring it down. I'll look forward to some decent software improvements when Kitkat hits.

If battery is important 4.1.2 is way better. Being flashoholic i have tried everything and i cant find nothing beyond 4.1.2 with better battery. I have ancient nand backup from august last year with sotmax v10 and perseus kernel, its loaded with apps, and it smooth fast and efficient. Yeah newer roms are less clunky with few extra perks, but to me battery i get with older roms is much more satisfying.
