Volume buttons won't work in Recovery - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As my title. Power button works except the volume up and down.
Right now, I am unable to enter recovery mode with orange notification.

Use the trackpad in recovery to move cursor and press the trackpad to make your selection-volume is in hboot only

You mean volume doesn't work in hboot to select recovery? Maybe volume buttons are stuck/inop? You do have clockwork mod flashed, right?

I am just trying to fix this for my friend. I am not sure how the my touch 4G method goes. I just tried the three button 1. Power 2.up 3. down to turn it on, it leaves me to a blank screen. About 30 seconds later, the orange notification light keeps flashing.

if youre able to get into hboot you can surely get into recovery. once youre in hboot just press volume down to highlight recovery and press power button to enter recovery.
once you in recovery though, you wont see orange text. you will see blue text for stock recovery.
orange and like a turquoise looking color are the custom recoveries. you get those when youre s-off and rooted.

Wait. So why does the pic show you're in hboot. Or is that not an actuall pic of your device?

Actual picture of the phone.
My friend told me that the phone shut off all of a sudden, and it ended up with that screen

Since it has the gingerbread update, and is s-on, your best bet would be trying to get a warranty exchange either in the store or through customer support. As long as it wasn't dropped in water, I would think t-mo would exchange it without hassle...

EDIT: Can't see pictures on my network so this post was no help.

That means the volume button is stuck pressed down. Its the only other way you can get to that screen without actually physically trying to get to that screen.
Best bet is just to get a warranty exchange.

powering off the device

Does anyone know if there is a free application that provides an icon on the Today screen to power off the device instead of having to hold down the power off button on top next to the card slot? I have an icon on the Today screen to soft reset. One to power off would be great!

It is built into Faria's ROMs if you are using them (the little green thing in the icon bar).

I have a Cingular 8125
I use psShutXP.
Dunno if it's free or not though.
It can put a little icon in the tray and then when you click it:

I don't see how this would benefit you because you still need to hold down the button to turn the power back on. This sounds like a hardware issue.

true...but that's what i take my battery out for
and it is a hardware issue, i just dont know where to get it fixed
Oooh, I'm sorry you have to do all this! If the device is still under warranty, the mfg. should ffix it. By the way, I found a cab file from pda gold website called "power off", installed it to my device, and made the mistake of copying the file to windows/start-up in file explorer as a shortcut. Doing this stopped my device from starting so I had to do a hard reset. Since my device would not start, the only way I could hard reset (for those who had the same problem) was to press the comm manager button, the voice record button, and sticking the stylus in the reset hole at the same time (not an easy task), release the buttons and stylus, and then press the green arrow (send) button. This sends a message telling the mfg. to set the device back to factory settings. I got this info from tech support at Cingular.

I found psShutXP @ PDA GOLD.COM..but mine says SHUT DOWN instead of TURN OFF. My screen just turns black & I can still see everything thru the dark screen. I want something to completely turn the device off. Yes this is free software.
yea...its not under warranty i think there is somewhere i can go to get it fixed, just dont wanna have to shell out alot of $$$ to get it done

[strange bug] Menu button spells out mEnu

Okay I don't know if its just me, but now that I noticed this veerrrry tiny thing I see it EVERYTIME I use my phone. on the menu button the 'e' is the only thing capitalized! So the menu button is like 'mEnu' that doesn't make sense =\
Nice point out! Now I'm going to see that every time I look at my phone, thanks. ;-)

hTC is correct ;-)
MyTouch 3G?
I assume you're referring to the MyTouch menu button.
That's due to the tiny print I would assume. It looks exactly like what you described, "mEnu" - HOWEVER, that is completely ignored because the TEXT size levels out the letters on my menu button.
Also, think about the "hTC" logo. It's an "hTC style" of doing things.

And that is NOT what we are trying to achieve in this thread obviously.

Installed Lock screen replacement app....and phone ruined

after installing...i set it was default home screen.
since then..the entire screen went black..and whenever i press home button..all i see is a blank screen
without the home screen..i cant use any of the phones features..so my phone is kinda rendered useless
pls help.
how to hard reset the phone or get the helix launch back?
Might help if you told us which lock screen app it is. Try restarting?
Gary~
Do I understand it right you set a lock screen app. as your home screen??? not a smart move. Can you still access apps, than open the app and by most of the lock screen programs in settings you can undo this. I think there must be a " don't select" sign next to the lock app when you selected it as your default home screen.... That should have said enough....

Perhaps you could try booting in safe mode... Still testing it out. hold on
Gary~
Tuff one. I'd say just re-flash the phone. That's probably the only way you could get any response from phone coz' you'll be doing it while booting.

I have a feeling safe mode might be able to save you. However, I have not been able to boot MY phone in safe mode... You could try. There seems to be quite a few ways
1) Turn on phone and when you feel the vibrate press the volume down key
2) Turn on phone and when you feel the vibrate hold the menu (left) key until it boots completely
Tell me if you have any luck

Hi,
I know your phone is fixed now... Glad you managed
Other things to try in such situations:
- Install 'Folder Organizer' and have it add an entry to the notifications; then you can start apps from the notification menu. Open Android Market, see below for the rest.
- Wait for the Android Market to announce you that you've got some updates. Open the Android Market from the notification. Now you can install, and also launch apps. Install 'Home Switcher', and open that app. Select the home-app that you want to use and launch it
Oh, and once you have a way of getting into the Android Market, you can of course also un-install the app that caused the problem in the first place
Cheers,
--Tim

Yeah they need some type of way to lock it.
Theres an app called ring guard that reverts the ring tone volume when accidentally hit. It's pretty good because I used to hit out all the time.
If you don't like that then I suggest acquiring a case the protects the volume from being so easily pressed.

Riggs may be kidding but it's actually the truth. The volume keys are useful, why would you want them disabled? The best solution to your problem really is to just stop pressing them. I know the problem, I had my own issues with them... for about 2 days. Then I just stopped pressing them.
Don't downgrade your device, upgrade yourself
^ Shift Faced
Thanks everyone for your replies, no I'm not holding it wrong but I am left handed and the volume rocker is always against my hand. When typing like I am right now I occasional hit the volume by accident. Also I have car holder and that always hits em as well, didn't have that problem with my evo so I was just asking a question. I appreciate the jokes because they are funny and I thank the only one of you all who actually gave me some good advice.

I use Volume locker - it still allows you to press the button, but does not change the setting until you confirm it on the screen. It seems to be the best solution sort of editing the text file on the phone that contains the button mappings.
Good luck
I use volume locker also by hourdb in the market...I can vouch that its a great app that does wonders...also comes with many fine tune settings to control many different scenarios depending on your needs.

[TUTORIAL] Fixing 'Almost dead' or 'Dead' hardware buttons

!!Do it at your own risk!!
Be careful not to cut any wires!! There arent any on the places we're gonna play with so far but anyway
Things we'll need:
A screwdriver(a really small one)
A magnet(optional, for keeping screws together)
{

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",

}
LET'S GOOOOOO!!! lol
1. Take the back cover off and pull the battery out..
2. Unscrew the screws at the shown places below
3. Push the sides out as shown below(doesn't explain it good enough but I hope you figure it out )
4.
Push the volume buttons out like shown below
Push the Search and Camera buttons too
5. Screw the screws back in their places as shown in the 2nd step
Enjoy the ease of pressing you buttons with less effort! lol
And if you have some problems with the 3 buttons below the screen(power, home and call) you can check out this advice by andreas. Until i or someone else possibly finds a way to fix them...

I also created a Widget on my homescreen: Lock Screen Widget
and a CM7 power widget to get it locked from statusbar
