New cwm 1.5 - Acer Iconia A500

Just to let you people know , there is a new CWM 1.5 out , nice wipe menu and possible to flash from internal sd

Thanks for posting this -- I'll have to try it later.
A little off-topic, but what's with this TegraOwners site? If it's a site for tablet owners one would think the site would be designed to display properly in a tablet browser. Even the stock browser doesn't display that site properly -- it's just a bad design. That's why I'll have to try this later when I'm in front of a PC.

It's Thor's site, while he may not be much of a web designer, he came up with CWM for the A500, and numerous custom ROMs and kernels as well. While it's tough navigating on a tab, and I agree with you, it can be done.

I wish someone else would port CWM to our A500, can't help but feel it's infected otherwise

Sorry but we do not allow any kernel without a source code in compliance with GPL.

Description requests

Hi guys,
I've been reading this forum for almost a month now (since I got my Epic), and I still haven't seen any description for a lot of the software you're using. I'm not an idiot here, I made a joeykrim exploit uninstaller of my own shortly after noobnl posted the one click exploit. Still, I'm not a mind reader. How do you guys even keep up with this?
ClockworkMod - The website describes it as, "An open source recovery image used by many phones". Not very helpful. There's a post on their forums asking what it does, with no response.
Andromeda - Apparently a ROM Manager with built in root. Not very helpful. Starting from the top, why would I need a ROM manager? Does this run on the phone? Why would I want a ROM manager on my phone? Doesn't this serve the same function as ClockworkMod?
AOSP Magic and Tha Boss ROM - Neither of these have any instructions. Tha Boss ROM actually includes a download link, while AOSP Magic eschews the link in favor of a video review. The video review is nice, as it contains the first instructions I've seen so far, brief as they may be.
A few lines of description on your releases would really help the new people. Really, you'd have to be a fool to download these programs and flash/fry your phone without description or instruction! You're pushing away the more cautious people who might otherwise join in.

clockwork rom manager is an app on your phone that requires root access, allows you to flash roms under the android OS and is nice and GUI (graphic user interface)
clockwork recovery is at the boot level, before the android OS loads, it's used as a minimal menu to do lower level functions such as flashing roms to your phone, clockwork rom manager uses this as it's backend for flashing roms.
androidmedia, boss rom and aosp magic are all roms (entire custom android OS packages) flashable though clockwork recovery
everything listed as a kernel is only a chunk of the OS that controls the hardware and such... they can overclock the device and improve battery etc. applications and favorites and other user data stuff is uneffected.
the weird names are just what the developers are naming their software. What you should be paying attention to are key terms like
ROM, KERNEL, RECOVERY those are the different parts that are being modified...
That being said.... for someone that researched for over a month, you don't seem to be quite getting it, also this doesn't need to be in developer forum, and all this is in the hundreds of WIKI's posted on other android devices.. also a quick google search would answer most of your questions you're having

ClockworkMod - makes a custom recovery, along with many other programs and apps, that makes flashing custom rom's and kernels much easier. Add Clockwork Recovery to your phone and you can load any custom rom or kernel you want by simply booting into recovery. Instructions to install it on your phone are in the OP (original post) of the clockwork recovery thread.
Andromeda - It is a group of custom programs noobnl has made. He made a custom kernel (this overclocks (makes faster) your cpu and undervolts (adds battery life)). His kernel also installs rom manager and super user to make make rooting more functional. Noobnl also has an andromeda rom that modifies touchwiz to be a little different with some different features. In both cases read the OP of the two threads and you will find easy installation instructions (using clockworkmod recovery) and a description of what they both do.
Aosp Magic and Tha Boss - These are both custom roms that in some way change how your phone looks and functions. Custom roms are all just ways to personalize your phone. For the most part they all install easily with clockwork recovery. Read the OP of any rom and it tells what they have done, what they do with each update, and how to install it.
Not trying to be mean or anything, but reading the OP pretty much always explains everything. I have only been doing this since they epic came out and have just learned by trying things out. It is very difficult to fully brick your phone. Most the time if you can't get your phone to work you can use Odin (see the thread for more info) to flash back to stock and start over.
Just my two cents but people who are pushed away isn't a bad thing. If they don't know what they are doing they don't need to be doing this. There are several terminology threads on this site...pushing them away means a lot less clutter in the dev threads and else where. Not that I'm saying they shouldn't be here at all, but read read read read....read....and then read some more. And if all else fails bash it with a hammer and turn it in on insurance.

See, its hard to really complain on this because some people are doing some cool stuff on their own effort and time, but I will agree with the OP on this. I agree that only a few lines of descriptions would not only help new users but cut a LOT of threads and posts from people interested but unsure of what do or what something is. And in fairness, it sounds pretty bad when u say that if people aren't that familiar with stuff they shouldn't try it. We don't all know everything and sometimes a little info goes a long way. But that's just my opinion.

Unfortunately if you can't search, read, and understand all the info that is posted you'll have only one option to customize your phone...Sprint ID(which will cost you $$). I've found that none of the processes, such as rooting or flashing kernels, are difficult to perform. In fact sometimes the amount of information already provided becomes confusing to some. I understand the issue devs have with the clutter in this section of the forum. Maybe mods can help by moving topics to the general section and maybe preserving the cleanliness of this section. On the other hand, why all the rage against people asking questions? If I'm not mistaken everyone isn't magically born with all the knowledge required to customize their phone. That's why there are forums like these to provide a community where people seeking knowledge can find it. Personally I find the forums for any piece of hardware from my Directv box to my Epic to be absolutely the most valuable "manual" I can have. Its nice to rely on actual intelligent users for information and not a low paid csr with a script on the other end of the phone.

no problem with the questions, it's just where it's being asked is the problem. People don't think their question will be answered if asked in the general section, or the thread that relates to their problem and decides... I'll just post in the dev section.. there's smart people in that forum!
I've seen it more than once, people don't want to search, or research... or read.. they want to ask a question and have someone answer it directly without having to dig back through posts that don't relate to the question they're asking. Like I said I seen it more than once and the mentality is easy to pick up on.
Don't worry I'm on your side. I've just seen some pretty rough treatment of someone asking a question...in this forum actually(not this thread). They were posting in the wrong place but there's a better way to direct someone to the right place than to berate them. That being said go to the Search and type in "root my phone" without quotes and THIS thread shows up higher in the list than one-click-root. Tends to throw people off the search function. I know it's a faulty way of searching but it's the way people do things. Many forums have problems with their search though. A google search for root Epic 4g has similar problems...the top results link to outdated information and the one click is halfway down the page.
People don't always read the rules of a forum either...it's just human nature. At least the people that make it here are finding the smartest people to answer their questions

New Android Website! Need Feedback! Please

Hi, I am working on a new site with some of my buds...
Since we all have HD2's lol we will start here. The plan for this site is to help you with your android hacking. Like I said we will start with the HD2 for right now but eventually expand a whole lot. We want to have Android latest news and phones, help the community out. Maybe have forums eventually for other android devices in the future. Who knows where this idea will take us, but we want to focus on helping out the community. In no way we will be competing with XDA, but for Newbies is not easy reading thru all these phorums; or they are just lazy lol. We currently have a writer, graphic designer and a Mod freak to start things off. We want to know what you guys think, feel free to discuss and overall: What would you like to see on the site?
The site shall be called WWW.ANDROID4LIFE.COM and it goes live real on 3-1-11
You can preview the site now! Here: http://www.wix.com/casademipadre777/android4life

Thank you!
Very good site. Fantastic for beginners. Layout is easy to see and format throughout is good. Continuity also good.
One thing I will mention is that the transition effects between pages may be a burden for some older legacy computers and people running a a poor connection. Perhaps having a feature to avoid this would be good.
Good work man

Thanks. I'm glad you like the concept, and you are right... Pure Html sites are better but they lack on data stability, which is why we are using more flash sites. Besides they are more simple and I am a flash freek lol. This site is more for our generation and you need a good internet connection jaja! But we do have a link to update your browser flash player, we hope that helps some people. I really appreciate your feedback and trust me your suggestion is kept
it appears like its a NAND flashing method you are building here
you should specify that, as we know the other method is via SDCard in Winmo 6.5
also you should highlight the importance of the very basic and foremost first step of all
flashing HSPL3 (2.08HSPL)
then, MAGLDR
then everything else follows.
just my polite suggestion, very nice website BTW

Thanks jigners, we are thinking of adding a seperate tab for the SD Method for those that follow. But you got it right we are Emphasizing the Nand method. We will talk about this in the Video Tutorials along with all these major important steps, thanks!
Asshhhh.
Oeh, ok i try start at first things. It will be hard for you to understand but i give my best.
Never ever dont think this way - i have new and good pc (laptop, tab or smartphone) and my friends have too. So i create website, fun yes.
Real life is other. 65% people use older pc-s. Even more, think if someone goes to this site with hd2 and winmo, what and how he then see this page. This ugly and today outstanding flash IS NOT good way make good website. I'm serious.
REMAKE IT NOW.
About design.
I liked it. Littlebit mottled but not hurt everyone.
Site visitors counter today also out. Just place it bottom and hide for itself only.
I recommend to you get better some php based cms and attach your design. Then your site will be gotten on fly. With hd2 winmo and 3G. As you want bring beginners to site.
And one hint more. Think again about site content and main idea. Why? Week ago i seen on HTC site HD2, today not.
I dont want claim or blame you. Just these opinions i got whe i looked to this site. I thinked itself many times that hd2 needs some special site for helping xda devs work better and not waste time for threads named like these examples just gotted at this forum: [Q]Help needed Please, problems, HELP!

[Q] [ROM][Nightly][ICS] Team Eos nightlies. (Motorola Xoom Wifi Only) Query

Greetings folks.
First time posting to these forums so I have to post here. I did see another thread in this forum on the Eos ICS Nightly builds but it has degraded into a discussion of the limitation of posting in the Dev forums, something I'm not fussed about. So far I'm extremely impressed by the work done and am more than happy with my understanding that this is an Alpha Build and not everything works.
This is not a complaint about things not working but rather a query that has come out of reading the entire EOS Nightly thread.
One thing I can not ascertain from the forums: it seems some people are able to use the External SD card in Read/Write mode. Unfortunately, I can not seem to be able to do so. I'm only able to get it in Read Only mode.
I've tried issuing standard Unix chmod commands (g+w) to change the mode without success. I tried checking for a mount table in /etc also without success.
Can someone please advise if a) /mnt/external1 can be made Read/Write under Build 12, and b) if so, how to get it going?
Much Obliged,
M_Cheevy
I think I read in the thread that using root explorer works... I think!

Burden,
Thanks for the swift reply. I'll give it a try.
I should have mentioned that I've tried using Alpha File Manager to do this. Up until now that is Also, in the past, with the Tiamat kernels, Alpha was able to Read/Write to the external. However, I do understand that not all applications are ICS ready. I'll try Root Explorer and post the results to this thread.
Much Obliged,
M_Cheevy
It only worked for me when I downloaded an External card write app from the market.
As far as my thread went, well you classing it as me complaining mybe explains some of the comments I got I suppose. My point on OTG was not a complaint at EOS but as you have mentioned here it does not work. All I was aiming at and if you read the Motorola forums both external card write and OTG mount were never enabled by Motorola, no one seems to be saying if they will with be enabled by Motorola in ICS ?
Now if this is was an Alpha build by Google I could understand, but if Motorola can only work with this and thats it, it does concern me with how much better off we will be.
Xoom68,
Please don't mistake my characterisation of your query as a complaint. I merely stated that the thread had gone that way. I'd really rather this thread merely addressed the specific issue I had with Read/Write.
Burden010: Thanks. I did cough up the $4 for Root Explorer and it was able to access the External SD in Read/Write mode successfully.
I'll update the thread header with a "Resolved" flag. (Tried, but doesn't seem to be possible)
Much Obliged for all your help,
M_Cheevy

I suspect most of these issues will have to be resolved by the game publishers, and there's not much the EOS team can do about it. These are probably compatibility issues with the game itself under ICS. I'm fairly sure they will be gradually resolved by game publishers as more ICS devices get in the wild.

[ROM] ICS AOSP Acer a500

Hello everyone,
i want to open this thread because seems that the development in this forum for acer a500 ICS AOSP has been stopped.
I know that lots of people "hate" thor2002ro for not relasing source code in fact this thread is only informative for who, as me, doesn't care about having or not having source but they want to try ICS on tablet.I think that it is the right place because is a custom rom. Then, with the permissions of thor2002ro, i decide to mantain a thread on xda copying what they publish on tegraowners. I take no credit for the rom, im only a messenger for you (if you do not want it, simply dont reply) and i try to update the thread when a new alpha is done:

Welcome to the Internet I guess then? Larger forums will of course bring many more views and opinions, just have to go with the flow.
getting over this annoying spat that doesn't help the community one bit, i just installed the new ROM (v59) and played with it. aside from it being terribly buggy on the cyanogen/trebuchet side (it keeps freezing), it's pretty fast and a bit more intuitive than honeycomb. granted, alpha development is at a point where ICS's main eyecandy options (face detection via camera, integrated data counter and what not) don't work. that's why it's an alpha. the new gapps are nice.. but having a 501 with no data connectivity means i'll be rewiping and installing any other flavour of 3.2.1 tonight.
now, that's not the community's fault, but perhaps working together more instead of bickering at each other would fix me my ICS sooner, dammit. now go make me some ice cream sammiches ..

Let OUYA know we want custom ROMs supported

I'm keeping a track of how many requests we get relating custom firmware, and from what I'm seeing the user base is not as interested in custom firmware as you might think, which is echoed by this thread (we've shipped 60,000+ units, and less than 10 people have commented in the last month in this thread about getting access to recovery mode).
That doesn't mean that we're shooting the idea down, you need to keep in mind that in terms of priorities this is way down the list as you'd expect from any feature where it's being requested by less than one tenth of one percent of the user-base.
I'm sure @Wajeemba is familiar with CM requests that a very small minority of the user-base are very passionate about, so hopefully you can understand why we're not rushing to work on this.

Update: this what OUYA thinks of its customer's requests...
Posted by alsutton on http://ouyaforum.com/showthread.php?3193-Let-OUYA-know-we-NEED-to-be-able-to-boot-to-recovery
and a I monitor this forum as well, so thanks for the heads up you're trying to artificially raise the numbers beyond the level of people who'd normally ask for it.
My *personal* view (that's mine, not OUYAs) is that you don't NEED to be able to boot to recovery, you LIKE access to it. The system works fine without being able to boot to recovery, many people use it without even knowing what recovery is, so it's not needed to use your OUYA. A number of people have managed to make their device unbootable with just root access by experimenting with things like compiling new kernels, then expect OUYA to fix them. Personally I think this is a bit unreasonable (if you started changing parts of the engine in a car and it broke down would you go back to the dealership?), and I'm sure most of the user-base would like support focusing on things other than user created problems (yes, shipping, we know).
So just a "lets all post bomb -->this<-- thread" isn't going to get it raised up the priority list. All I have to do now is factor in the number of "me too posts" from people who may not actually know what they're asking for.

This is ridiculous and insulting.

Hey +OUYA* devs! Don't worry about rooting your device (or purchasing the pre-rooted device). We will provide builds and instructions that can be used to restore the device to 'unrooted' factory state!
Official response to my support ticket:
The OUYA is based on Android which makes it far more open than other consoles, and an OUYA gives your root access which gives you access to far more access than most Android devices. We currently do not provide instructions on how to access recovery mode, and I can not comment on whether or not that may change in the future.

Post-Bombing isn't helping anyone.
If someone's really interested in that matter, he'll find answers for his questions in this forum!

Voice your opinions here. I think it more clearly explains the situation we are working with.

I was all set to buy an Ouya, but after reading this forum I'm not so sure. Ouya doesn't sound like a company I want to support. What do you guys think about the Mad Catz console coming out. I want Ouya's hardware not their restrictions. It seems like it will be more open. And to the guys at Ouya, don't hinder the peeps at xda, they are the ones that are going to make you successful.
I posted, thank you for the link. Was wondering where I should voice my concerns.
I posted[/URL as well. I based it mainly as a fail safe for things just happen. The other comments, were more based on others assumptions.

What do you guys think about this. It seems like more what I want. I think if Ouya is going to be restrictive, all dev support should go to a better company. Lets face it, people are looking at the Ouya for what it could be not what it is. It has the hardware to easily replace all the Google Tvs, Apple TVs and Rokus. I actually want it to dual boot into Google TV. Anyway, the Ouya will be releasing soon and there will be many tech articles about it. If we can go onto those articles and leave comment about how the Ouya isn't the good solution we can make a good company popular. I think most people buying the Ouya are just assuming that they will be able to hack it any way they want.
Confused
So do we or dont we have access to a custom recovery? Based on the dev forum I see we have a customer recovery available..what issues are there with it? Also i see WIP for multiple custom roms and even a kernel. I can't imagine one would waste time and making these if there is no viable way to flash them.....
Any information would be much appreciated.
The custom recovery works, many confirmed it on that thread including myself, as for the rest there stillb WIP's

Yes, we can do those things - the heart of the issue is that if any of those things mess up you have the potential to brick your device with no way to recover short of sending it back to OUYA, Inc. Most android device provide a method to enable a usb recovery mode in the event of such a drastic failure, the OUYA console does not. How many people are willing to test/use software that could potentially brick their $100 device that they have been waiting months to get?

The thread title is a bit misleading/confusing, recovery is accessible by rebooting to recovery. The problem is that you there is no way to boot to recovery via hardware except crashing the device during boot up using a keyboard.
They have gone about it all wrong, by allowing users the tools to brick OUYA but not the tools to fix it. Forgive me if I am wrong, but booting in to recovery does not allow us to do anything we can't already do by rebooting in to recovery. I have to wonder if behind closed doors they are moving towards removing root access.
