This is good news to our community since SE used to be anal about these mods.
They are giving 20 phones out to the CyanogenMod team and helping them out with kernals and debugging.

Honestly, I couldn't be more happy with all the changes Sony Ericsson has made.
that is too cool!
Can't wait to see where development goes form here!
Very cool! That's a much better stance than Motorola is now taking (so much for their unlocked bootloaders).
Considering how many they gave, I'm going that includes the CDMA R800x!

I'm pretty sure they will. Keep in mind the R800x officially cannot be bootloader unlocked. If they officially support custom roms on the R800x verizon will not be happy.

that's a great news!
maybe we'll see features in our xperia play combining the goods of cm7 and our phone.
Hopefully now that SE support development they can release their Kernel sources earlier
Loving the news.
My Atrix runs CM7 and it makes the device so customizable and better to use, so having this on the Xperia Play as well would be a plus.
With great news like these my atittude for Sony Ericsson is changing for the better.
Unlocked bootloaders and trying to help the community out. So much better than what Motorola and HTC have been doing recently.

I've been waiting to try the new Sony Reader app since it was first announced a few months ago. December launch was bumped to January launch. It is finally available, but not for the X10. Froyo only. Talk about salting an open wound. Bummer.

Of course that is not Sony's issue that Ericsson has decided to produce an outdated phone with outdated OS and not upgrade it to anything beyond 2.1 because their developers are not able to work on Time Scape and bring it to 2.2.
I forgot that in this particular issue, Sony and Ericsson are one entity. Yep, speak of which....
since se has no phone YET running froyo its more or less quite embarassing
Unless SE's hinting at Froyo for the X10 then this app is... I dunno what to make of this move... Sony can't be this stupid... or can they?...
Sure, they can say it's meant to reach not just their userbase but the android community at large but... wow... just wow

Sad but true
Anyway, not all is lost. This app could be ported...
Or we could just install Z's Froyo rom... other than no camcorder (pics work, just not video ATM) it is great and I am getting 1500+ in quadrant.
Just a suggestion, I know some like the stock rom, or just dislike a non-complete rom.
I am holding off on Froyo roms for now, but fully intend to use one before I buy another phone. My contract with AT&T just started in August. Gonna own this X10 a while.

Has anyone gotten this to work on the G Tab? I have played with it for days even called Sony support and can not get it to work?
Just found this and wanted to share.
Arc & Neo ICS updates out today.
http://www.xperiablog.net/2012/05/2...eo-android-4-0-ics-updates-start-rolling-out/
On a side note I thought I read somewhere that the Arc is a common ROM to be ported to Xperia PLAY.....this true?
Anyway just sharing.
Yes, it is true.

Wohoo, this sounds promising, it sounds like my first try to port a ROM ever here, since I really want a ICS-ROM for Xperia Play, but only if the android version is 4.0.4 then, otherwise, it will not get better And after that I will try to get everything to work as well
it seems that the latest Xperia Pro ICS firmware has been leaked!
The sony devs better pray that it runs like crap on our phones because I cant imagine them looking worse than they do right now
If devs port this rom to the Play, get TouchPads working with all the touchpad games and I'll retract every ICS is bad for the Play comment I've made recently

ICS is great for us who pretty much just use the pad for emulators. Emulators work fine in ICS, and you get all the niceties (sadly the rotation animation is way up there on my list).
I could care less if Sony released an update or not, I'm still able to get a damn fine ICS experience with the aokp rom.

As with so many other people, my phone contract has expired. As such I now have a beautiful Xperia T to replace my X10 with. However two years together with it can't be so easily forgotten so it is with a heavy heart that I say good bye to this corner of XDA. It has been quite a journey- the debate if we would get gingerbread, about dual touch, the 16m colour screen? I remember it all! I was here when the founders of the X10 community were eager- DoomLord, Trip'n'raver, Z, J rdannar and all the countless others. In the past year however, they have been replaced with the likes of ChampionSwimmer, Amin, WolfBreak, FeraVolt and Vasishta Reddy. So the X10 thrives and survives! Although I will no longer have the device I will still check in ocassionally and if I can share what I have learnt in the past 24 months I will do so gladly. To the Devs all I can say is keep on rocking and make our x10 shine! To the users, obey the forum rules and keep faith

just out of curiosity...why Sony as ur next device???
A combination of ui, the specs and that I love Sony's designs! I was so envious of the arc! The t was all I wanted and more! Factor in the my fan boy attitude and the James bond stuff it was ideal! HTC I don't like the ui, same as Samsung. IPhone I say no to on principle and the others aren't nice...

Hey Galcactus,
I can understand leaving this community isn't nice. There has been a great development and there is a great community-feeling.
I recognize everything you've said. I also was there in the early days (remember the F5 party's on TripNRaver ROMs).
But good stuff ends some days.
Even that my subscription has ended already (beginning of september) I'm still using it, with my x10.
Newer subscriptions cost me more money. So I'm thankfull that there still are dev's for x10, that can give me ICS.
Anyways, have fun with your Mr. T!

I am a little upset that the xperia E comes with official Android 4.1 JB having less specs then the xperia play and they get jellybean! not ICS straight to jellybean! both specs are identical but the xperia E has a lower Gpu and internal memory AND STILL! I understand that sony said that they wanted to leave this phone as a gaming phone but at least make it a optional update on your own risk or something

I think the problem is even if Sony released JB for our phone game development would still be slowing down like it has been lately. thats why i say at your own risk, for people who might not want to game in the xperia play
Wouldn't be the first time a weaker phone got a newer FW than Xperia Play... we've already established that the reason Xperia Play didn't get ICS/JB was because it would throw the software compatibility way off.
If you want a good example of how bad it would've been, just look at all Evo V owners who are in an absolute fury because the vast majority of 3D games were made to operate under 2.3. The way I see it, Sony did the smart thing by opting for a more stable ecosystem.
The thing is that a lot of app developers are abandoning gb, and making apps for 4.0+, even Google them self, example, chrome browser a great browser but not for gb.
I'd even settle for a decent official ics from Sony, I mean the developers here are doing a better job than them

The Xperia Play has a Scorpion S2 CPU, it's old. The Xperia E is a Cortex A5. Scorpion might be faster in raw flops but the A5 has more features. Snapdragon is quite poor by today's standards and the Xperia E will probably beat it in many ways.

They don't do it on purpose. 2.x API just doesn't support anywhere near as much as 3.0+.

Hey dan!
and i see what you mean by the differences, i seen some benchmarks
I am going to admit many people know more about the inner workings of hardware. But I am sure that with the xperia e's 320x240 resolution also helps in benchmarks as it's not having to push as much in terms of resolution. Although I know that is only one aspect of a bigger picture.

See So are we going to see issues here between cdma and gsm support like a few other devices out there? Example : I had the sprint HTC one and it got much less development because of partition differences from the gsm variants.
Since all moto x variants use the same base I'm assuming we won't need to worry about those kinda problems?
I'm curious because I'm hoping this device will have much more aggressive development and an active community. Since the phone is near AOSP I'm also wondering if we will have kernel developers like Franco and others.

I doubt we are going to see a very large Dev Community. I hope I am wrong. But since I haven't seen much interest by now - well - it just seems unlikely. Developers like to get new phones when they are brand new. And it doesn't seem to be happening. But I could be wrong. It would certainly not be the first time.

Or all the Devs were waiting on the dev edition...
Edit* I was thinking about this more. In many respects, the developers invest time, energy and heart, into "fixing" the devices... making them better via firmware and kernel tweaks. I have yet to aquire my moto x... hoping it will be at my door Monday, but from what I have gathered, this device is one of the best out of the box experiences of any other available phone... developers may recognize that their skills may be better appreciated and put to use on devices that would see more benefit. Not to say the moto x doesn't deserve development, but rather, that it may not need it as much as an s4, htc one or g2.
Now, the moto x experience can still be enhanced by development support, but, again without having the device yet myself, it appears as though many are getting, out of box, the experience that so many developers are striving to make possible on many of the other phones currently available.
Personally, I can't wait to have a phone, near or at stock, that is almost exactly what I have been wanting... A harmonization of hardware and software that doesn't sacrifice the efficiency of stock Android and doesn't skimp on usable quality features.

I, too, hope that we see decent developer support for the Moto X. I mean, the T-Mobile/Sprint versions have unlockable bootloaders, Moto just released dev editions which support cdma and gsm networks, the phone is available on all four major US carriers, so you'd figure we'd have healthy developer activity. Here's hoping that its just a matter of time.

Considering how close this is to AOSP, I'm sure a few devs might consider using the Moto X source as their base.

There is no doubt there will be stock blur based ROMs. With phones available on every carrier with unlockable bootloaders, two working recoveries, we should see them popping up soon. AFAIK the only thing that is not quite right yet is the updater script.
