They went with a smaller screen that's a no go for me. Very disappointing for me. All the other specs look good but no 5 inch screen is a terrible mistake.

That is the safest option atm and that is business decision not a enthusiastic one. At least it runs on Ginger ( sigh ) ,while the Nexus guys are having leaking OTA of Ice Cream now ( sad ).

Yes I understand there decision but I will be going with the note.

I decided not to continue buying Dell for other reasons, such as delays and problems in their updates. probably my next phone will be a Galaxy Note.

Why would they even bother coming out with another phone? They don't market them at all and all three have been failures (Venue and Venue Pro).

yeah, just saw this over on engadget.
4.3" ?, way to blow it again 'Dull' ... uugghh
on a more positive note... hey is that gingerbread on a Dell??
Im not seeing Dell Stage UI.. anyone?... specs claim Stage UI 2.0...
nice volume buttons on the side.. iphone KIRF.

I like my Streak 5, but I'll never buy anything from Dell again due to their lack of technical support.

i wont buy another dell phone again & im stuck with this one till march (18 month contract on o2)
i fancy the htc rhyme next but ill see whats on o2 at the time

I think I'm done with Dell. This might be a great device, but I really dislike their lack of developer support. Samsung is releasing source code before the devices are released. I think I prefer that attitude rather than begging like we've had to do with Dell.

In regards to H/W specs:
Basically dell is launching something similar to a HTC sensation, but with a SAMOLED instead of S-LCD. The specs beyond the display type are pretty similar.
Really those 4 points are all that really differentates any android phone:
The cpu+chipset:
Both devices: MSM8260 (3rd gen snap)
Display size/type/res
Sensation: 4.3" QHD S-LCD
Streak Pro: 4.3" QHD SAMOLED
Android Version:
Both Devices: Android 2.3.x
Cell freqs:
Streak Pro: 900/2100(?) (Possibly US/AWS like the venue, venue pro)
Sensation: 850/1700 or 900/2100
In regards to StageUI 2.0:
Stage UI differences:
StageUI 1.5:
Requires StageUI 1.5 launcher
Home screen page indicators: Dots at bottom
Up to 7 widget types
StageUI 1.6:
Requires StageUI 1.5 launcher
Home screen page indicators: Dashes at top
Up to 11 widget types
Stage UI1.7:
Requires no specific launcher
At least 6 widget types
StageUI 2.0:
Unknown, resembles StageUI 1.5 launcher (which is based on generic launcher2)
Unknown widget count
As the list states, 1.7 doesnt require a specific launcher, might be true of 2.0. Which ever it is, the press photo doesnt show any of the widgets.
In the event that it's rom is dumped after release I wouldnt imagine it being hard to port StageUI 2.0 back to SD2.3.
StageUI 2.0 might actually be useful on the Spro as the biggest complaint of StageUI is that it's horribly slow. Even if they did jack to make it faster a 3rd gen snap should very well be able to brute force it's way though it.
With regards to updates:
Keep in mind that the rom development is mostly outsourced to the manufacturer of the device dell gives specs:
Qisda
Streak 5
Streak 7
Venue
Venue Pro (?)
Pegatron
Streak 10
Unknown
Streak Pro
The kernel (for s5/7/venue, dont know about s10) is made by a 3rd company, stage ui is possibly made 4th company.
Qisda only seems to have a single team to support all 3 devices, and it's roughly broken down as:
85% on S5:
~27 official updates
57 known roms
GB update 'soon'
10% on S7:
1 official update
5 known roms
HC 3.2 'immenent'
5% on venue:
1 official update
8 known roms
no announced updates
It's mainly qisda+dell that's the reason updates are slow. It's ALSO the main reason the source drivers arnt available, there's half a dozen owners for the source code.
If dell selects a different manufacturer, or merely does not repeat what it did with the s5/7/venue it's possible for them to fix their act. But this isnt likely.
Currently the S10 is reasonably on track with regards to updates. (launched with 3.1 in august, with 3.2 being "immenent")
Also keep in mind by the time the Spro launches google will have likely released ICS/4.0 and the next nexus phone which will have very similar specs + ICS/4.0.

Same here! I'll NEVER buy any phone from Dell even if they release a super phone - their lack of support for the Streak has left me with a bitter taste. Samsung Note is the way to go!

Why does not Dell provide an update to GB for the existing Streak owners when it is providing GB out of box in the Pro version. I feel dejected. Lets put a collective appeal to Dell. May be that helps

Good news for us att folks!

On a slightly unrelated note: the streak pro is unlikely to be the "opus one"
The leaked roadmap:
consisted of two slides, 1 of tablets (which dell internally refers the streak as) and 1 of phones.
The Streak pro is highly likely to be the "millenium" as it fits it's description more or less (excluding the ICS part, keep in mind the slides were made at the beginning of 2011, google didnt give a solid date for availability at that time)
The timeline is more or less reasonably accurate for things that released:
Venue: release
Venue pro: release
Venue pro MLK: Mango update
"Wrigley": Unannonuced venue pro sucessor
"Hancock": unannounced "millenium" varient(?)
"Millenium": Streak pro(?)
Streak: release
"opus one:" unannounced streak successor (possibly 5.3-5.5")
Streak 7: release
Streak 7 MLK: upcoming HC3.2 update
"Sterling": unannounced Streak 7 sucessor
"silveroak": unannounced device (possibly 8.9")
Streak 10: release
"gallo mlk": unannounced streak 10 HC3.2 update
"rosemount", "peju": unrelated windows tabs
Notice how the streak has no mlk, this was because at the time dell was still deciding if they were going to bother with GB for the s5 at all. GB for S5 is still unannounced, but it's "immenent" for specific carriers. It's very unlikely that it will ever roll out to all carriers.
Also note that the S5 is still being formally intoduced into new markets. Only last month did it launch in turkey and earlier in summer in pakistan. The newest markets will likely be supported until the end of the year. (these markets all use 00/retail roms)
Just be happy that the s5 is getting updates at all, the venue functionally had no updates in it's lifetime, and it was released half a year AFTER the S5
The s5 was also previously announced to be supported in china with an alternate os, which will extend it's lifetime if it launches.
The next devices that are likely to be announced is the "sterling", "hancock", and "wrigley" if they are still planned on being released.

the GT-I9250 is probably the most exciting. It’s said to have a 4.65-inch 1280 x 720 resolution display and a 5-megapixel camera, and run Ice Cream Sandwich on an unspecified processor which, we’re guessing, will be a dual-core. Its sibling, the GT-I9220, is even bigger, with a MID-rivaling 5.29-inch 1280 x 820 Super AMOLED Plus panel, a dual-core 1.4GHz processor, 8-megapixel camera and Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

wow hooo!! finally a worthy replacement for the Streak to consider!!!!
GT-19220 (isnt GT for galaxy TAB?), anyways, I wish the 5.29" deal would have ice cream sandwich maybe by then there will be more honeycomb code released, and get some nice custom ROMs. If there was a stable custom ROM available, might likely have me sold!
GT-I9250
I was hoping Samsung would step up to the plate. God knows Dell could give a rates rear end about the streak.
Unless Samsung has improved the GPS and Bluetooth hardware I will stay away from them. My wife's Captivate had a crummy GPS and wouldn't reliably staying connected to BT devices. Motorola insusts on MotoBlur, so that pretty much leaves me hoping for Dell to release a Streak2 or HTC to come up with something similar.

My wife just got a Samsung Infuse 4G and I have to say...it's a great phone. No issues at all. GPS works great and the sound quality on the bluetooth on this one is better than her previous iPhone 3GS. She has had it about a month so far and had one random shut down overnight. Don't know how or why that happened... Maybe they've gotten the bugs worked out?.?.
Lol , ad on this page shows "Super8 Motel". Dont know bout your area, but locally, all Super8s (and this aint no small metrop) are "hook-up hotels" where you get the room by tha hour (wink-wink)! I am surprized they advertise on this site

What I dont understand is: now that other 5" screen devices are being released , what the hello is wrong with dell? Why discontinue a perfectly good phone that pioneered the whole concept/reality in the first place?
I want to see these phones out soon. I'm ready to dump Dell like a crazy ex-girlfriend. I love the phone but, as always, hate the company. It's the same reason that I will never go back to Apple.
(RANT) I already hated Dell from bad laptop problems (charger issues on 2/2 computers, anyone know what I'm talking about?). I just couldn't resist this phone. Now I love it, and Dell's gonna get rid of it. I with they would stop selling computers, and keep the Streak!

I agree with both Rico and SlayDog... although I've had some downright horrifying service experiences with Dell (I used to be IT HelpDesk Mgr. for the college.... and we even had "Gold Level" Dell support).... I still LOVE my Streak... I've only had it a couple of months but still lovin it..
Oh, Rico...... the "Dell" logo on battery door fell off the other day (the "Del" part.... the last L stayed on)... Fortunately I had the factory clear case on it so it trapped the Del up near the edge/side of the phone..... I got 'er home and super-glued it back on.... THAT won't be trying to escape again anytime soon

I picked up an atrix at Best Buy last week when they were free, thanks to my fiance for letting me use her upgrade that she wasnt going to use...I must say that the 4" screen feels so tiny.
It's nice to finally be able to text easily with one hand (my thumbs could never quite reach the top left of the keyboard), and do other tasks easily with one hand...but web surfing is not near as enjoyable without the bonus real estate of the streak's 5" screen. Luckilly I still have it and use it at home as a wifi tablet.
But the Atrix will remain my daily driver because it just flies. It's way faster at everything (and I thought the streak was plenty fast).
I am paying for best buy insurance on the streak...since it's EOL what will happen if my streak is damaged beyond repair? Will it be sent in to Dell and replaced? Replaced with a comparable phone? SOL?
Like Rico, there's no way possible for me to go smaller than 5". That new Samsung (can't recall model, but it's supposedly 5.3"), sounds good on paper, but historically their products have been so cheaply constructed, they don't hold up well in the long run (case warping from Summer time heat when left in direct sun, display separating from case when put under pressure, etc.).
One thing about the Streak, and also Dell's Venue & Venue Pro models, is they're tanks. My cousin has a Venue Pro that looks like you could drive nails with it

Very much a viable phone.
Easy to root.
Easy to overclock, although how stable it is at OC speeds varies from device to device.
Do not expect the same performance you would get from a current dual core phone.
despite the months passed it is still a good allrounder. the huge screen of course is one of its biggest selling points. the main cons imho are
no official gingerbread (big question mark here. is it coming? is it not? things are quite confusing)
not powerful gpu (adreno 200 quite crappy if you are into serious gaming)
small custom rom scene (i'm not saying there are no custom roms, but there indeed are few devs)
1 thing : if you are someone who like to get people's attention, then the Streak maybe for you as every time you take it out of your pocket, people will probably start looking at this monster! This is what I like about the Streak! lol
The Streak main point is that it is different from other phones out there due to its form factor and it is a great device to show movies/photos to your friends. Its main advantage is definitely Web Browsing, this is the best device for this usage!

Absolutely true! While just about every other android device releases looks like they all came from the bc same mold then divided up and stamped with various brands and carrier names like a basic template, the Streak is so unique in form. I love it!

Yes I have been keeping close track of the note for the past 2 months. But dang, its like what? 700-900 bucks... yikes.
Honestly, I would personally choose a 5 inch screen phone with a sliding qwerty keyboard but I dont see one in the near future. So im thinking 200 bucks would be a small price to pay to try this baby out. Heck, I could always resell it fairly easily.
One more question, USA TMobile network. If unlocked I only get edge correct? No 3G/4G?

Most Streaks are edge only on T-Mobile. The AWS version Streaks (with T_Mobile's 3G band) are rarer and will set you back a lot more cash.

I kinda got a little phone fever now. Waiting for the Note to come to the USA, but getting impatient. Went to the At&t store today and looked at the SGSII Skyrocket. A sweet phone on paper, and I half expected I would leave with one, but it just couldnt compair to my Streak with its little (although technically way better) screen. It would honestly feel like a down-grade. And the stock UI was laggy compaired to my pimped out Streak...

Yes, also a very cool phone that for some reason has never been on my radar. They had one in black and one in white. Feels much more substantial than the SGS2, but for some reason the screen looked a little smaller than the Samsung even though they are both the same size. I pulled up a side by side comparison from the net, and the review said the Vivid had a slower processor, but they were both labeled as 1.5 Ghz dual core.
HTC sense looks great too...
I think the problem I had was that they both looked like PHONES, and the streak is a STREAK. Everyone I know has a phone, but I have this thing that is in a class (so far) by itself, and I have just gotten used to it...

The Streak 5 is the device I had been waiting years for. Previously I purchased the Axim 51v, which was a stunning piece of kit. It was the best PDA I ever owned (and mine is still working). Not only did it have the fastest CPU of any PDA at the time, it also had a massive 8 MB graphics chip (the same size as the video card in my first desktop), and could do what no other PDA still seems capable of; direct PDA to VGA out, so you can connect it straight to a computer monitor or data projector in mirrored or single screen format.
I waited a very long time for a device which could do everything I wanted (for me a smartphone is an essential business tool), and finally the Streak 5 arrived. In one stroke it replaced my Axim 51v, my iPod Nano, and my HTC Touch 3G. Using the standard battery I can get 48 hours of use out of it if I'm extra careful, 24 hours without being particularly careful, and 12 hours if I'm being completely careless.
It's superb, and I'm disappointed that it already seems to be going the way of the Axim 51v (abandoned by Dell distressingly shortly after release). I love the screen size, the form factor, the build quality, and the general finish. It sits very well in an Otterbox Commuter, and turns the heads of unfortunate iPhone users envious of the screen size. I just wish it had the same VGA out ability as the 51v; with that, it would be perfect.

successor already!

Is this true the galaxy note is getting a successor already!
Here's what I found.
A mysterious Samsung smartphone has received a Wi-Fi interoperability certificate recently under the name of Samsung GT-N8010. Since the Galaxy Note’s model number is GT-N7000, and this is the only official device from Samsung to have a model name that starts with an N, the new N8010 could very well be its successor
This is a well known marketing maneuver, obviously Samsung is well aware that GNote will be a big hit, so they are discouraging the competition by implying that a newer one is in the works.
However I myself don't believe that there will be one until the end of 2012.
Some say it's the US version, but who knows!
If Samsung's previous naming system is anything to go by, I would wager that the GT-N8010 the the WiFi-only version of something. The GT-N8000 is probably the 3G/4G device.
Actually beside being an old marketing ploy the Galaxy Note IS coming to AT&T as the GT-N7000B sometime early '12. It's been well known for months that the Note would be released in the United States as an AT&T SuperPhone minus the singular"Home" button.
My, my, did we forget it passed the FCC back in September/October (+/- a few days) 2011? According to the FCC they've already designated it as the GT-N7000B, but that can always change - right up to it's release. Plus keeping in line with the Galaxy S II family you count on capacitive on-screen buttons instead of that lone Homey Button.
Rumor has it that another reason it hasn't been released here at home is the ongoing, ever-perpetual, no end in sight patent war with Apple. Apple would have a field day claiming design patents were violated among other accusations. They'd do anything to delay or block the GT-N7000B's launch here.
Although the home button serves 2 important functions removing it would allow even more functionality.
This single action would fix the lag caused by the system/sensor waiting to determine if the the voice command app is being activated by the user. Also, by simply removing that lone, single physical button you'd add to the already vast screen real estate from 5.3" to whopping 5.5". Not only would it be a full inch larger to anything currently on the market, it would very likely be the deciding factor in determining whether it's a phone or tablet.
Personally I'd like a clear plane without any physical buttons. Can you imagine the beauty of this phone with a silky smooth 5.3" or 5.5" screen on it's 9mm chassis. This alone would be the most positive outcome achieved by removing that single button. It would most definitely be a work of art! But I could be wrong.
Then again,ME wrong...never!

IMOHO, I'd like a clear plane with NO buttons, just a pure 5.3" screen! That to me is the only positive that might be achieved from removing it. I could be wrong though.

I went ahead and got the "German" version because I got tired of waiting 6 months after a product is released, (except for iJunk) for it to make it to the
USA. That and the usually crippled nature, bloatware infested devices that
due ACTUALLY make it to the USA.
Then, comes the "when will android xxx.xx ever get here" that the U.S. carriers
delay delay delay.
At least with a non branded device, updates are usually more frequent, it isn't
locked down, and the functionality of the device is what the manufacturer intended...not what the carrier leaves you with.
I've had 2 unbranded smart phones, and 1 unbranded plain phone in my life and without a doubt, they run smoother, work better than their carrier locked-bloated versions.

I highly doubt it will have a bigger screen plus chances are it will have the slower snapdragon processor so that they can put in LTE into it. No thanks

Removing the physical home button would not gain you more functionality. It would actually lose functionality. With it, you can wake the device with it instead if the power button, which is a great feature, because it's so much easier to use than the power button.
Removing it will do nothing to fix the lag. The AT&T GSII with 4-strip capacitive buttons lagged the same as the international model because the voice control functionality is still there and invoked the same way. It would be the same with the Note.
There's no chance they'll put a 5.5" screen into the American version just because they removed the home button. They would have to increase the width of the phone to fit it. If they were able to decrease the bezel, they would have done it on the initial Note.
Let's not forget that ATT will probably develop an "enhanced" data plan for the phone since the screen and media output capabilities creep into their tablet sales.
I'll keep my German version thank you very much.

+1 Preach it brother! Amen!
When I heard that at$t was going to CRIPPLE the note with a snapdragon I bought a German Note right then and there! Happy as can be! Most of the unwashed masses will just see the big screen and think coool, and not care about the processor. LTE won't even be in my area until late 2012 so I could care less. JLG1985 , you don't know what you're talking about. But we all make mistakes so we forgive you.
I hope its the version that plays nice with the US T-Mobile 1700 spectrum band...

Too early for successor. Its got to be the US version or another flavor.

I'm a big fan of Exynos (SGS2 I9100 owner), but I'm also pretty impressed with the Qualcomm MSM8660 in my Tab 8.9 LTE (SGH-I957).
Out of the box, it's a bit slower compared to 1.4GHz on the Exynos Note.
But, I've overclocked it to 1.94GHz, and it's benchmarking better than my SGS2 (Siyah kernel) clocked at 1.4, and a dead heat when the SGS2 is running at 1.6.

In day to day use, well, it's difficult to compare apples to apples since the Tab is running Sluggycomb, vs Gingerbread on the SGS2, but in applications and browsing, it does great, gaming doesn't suck, and it was a HUGE performance upgrade from my Tegra 2 Tab 10.1, especially with media playback.
Also keep in mind that the SGS2 is 800x480, the Tab 8.9 LTE is 1280x800, so in GPU benchmarks, the Tab LTE has to work harder. The Adreno 220 is decent, roughly on par with the PowerVR 540, but less powerful than than the Mali 400..
TL;DR, a Snapdragon Note wouldn't totally suck, especially if LTE and DC HSPA+ 42mbs was important to you.
And that said, I'm still picking up an Exynos Note tomorrow, I'm not in an LTE area yet.
here's to hoping it's gonna be a 7+ inch tablet that also has an s-pen

Dell Streak 5 = Samsung Galaxy Note

Now that the Samsung Note is out... I get more comments like, "Wow! You got the new Samsung Note" or similar comments. Strange how Samsung's Note is a huge success and the Dell Streak was not. I guess that would be Dells fault for not having good support and dropping it too quick. Before the Samsung Note came out, I got a lot of comments from people on my Dell Streak.
Myself? I love this phone!
Biggest complaint? It's too bad when I need parts for it, I have to order from Hong Kong as Dell doesn't carry parts for this phone. Amazing!
Yknow what the difference is? Samsung is throwing millions on marketing the notes success all over the place. Dell heh. People daily are still amazed that dell made a phone

Yep, most people are astonished the Dell had a tab/cell phone.
Even some AT&T places I went to asked what the heck I had.
Dell bombed out on this one.

Couldn't tell the difference? Jesus! I've got both and I can categorically tell you there is a huge difference. The Samsung is sharper, brighter, more vibrant, the phone in it's entirety hammers the Dell. I'll update in a mo with side-by-side picture.
Should be able to see straight away.
Edit: Here are some shots, the colours on the Note are more true to life. In the flesh, a nicer phone to view/use.

I'm sure Samsung has more features and is a better phone and it better be as the Dell is two years older.
However, I did compare the photo's (ones taken with my Nikon stored on it) and Dell holds its own there.
I really don't have many complaints about the Dell either. Love it.
When the price comes down on the Samsung Note, I'll get one. I'm due a new phone in October.
I should have clarified. The slight differences in the screen technology hardly constituted me purchasing the galaxy note while still in contract with my streak.
It is obviously better.
Bigger screen
Double the resolution
Stylus
Over double the cpu power
Bigger battery
Is that worth the costs? Its really up to you. Personally no, not yet

I do miss a few things on the note..( batt life. Great cam..light weight..etc) but for everyday use the streak is perfectly fine...
Over the years i have learned much like the pc era..stick with what you like and dont pay attention to benchmarks or hype. The streak still has plenty of life left same with phones released in the last year or so. And with new phones coming out left and right and flooding the market.eventually it will become so saturated that manufacturers and carriers will be hurting.. and looking for other ways to keep customers happy. I feel a smartphone crash coming lol

Well said. New phones nowadays are OVERPRICED!
I waited until the Dell Streak price came down almost two years ago before getting it... free with two year contract. I will do the same with the Samsung Note in October... the price once again will be down by then.
Meanwhile, the Dell Streak will do just fine. I've been very happy with it. No complaints at all.
I haven't had anyone think my phone was a Note, but I have had people ask if mine was similar. I say, "Yes, similar. But I've had this for 2 years now. Dell just sucks at marketing."
My wife offered to buy me the Note, but with my Streak still going strong, I can wait. The s-pen looks nice and the next generation technology looks good, but it is very much an evolutionary step, not a revolution. I might even be able to make it until a quad-core 5" phone comes out. Who knows? Streak still going strong.
Yeah, I had full intentions on holding out from buying the Note lol, but then I found a 2 yr old $100 check going thru my sectionals arm rest compartment + @ the same time, Amazon dropped the price to $229... That was the sign to go convert. Final price of the phone was a little over 80 bucks once the $50 dollar freedom choice and $5 dollar certificate I had with BB. I bought the Streak 1st day out, it will always be my fav device and is the pioneer for any new 5" phone that ever comes out, but honestly the Note blows it away, couldn't be any happier w/ my decision. : )

The only reason Samsung came out with the 5.3" screen was they had to top the Dell Streak 5 five inch'er.
Personally, I thought that was stupid. 5" is perfect and why I'm keeping my streak.

oh agreed, but its biz & they cashed in where Dell f'd up.... I love the evolution of technology & will continue to ride the wave...Customizing this thing way easier too
Samsung already had a 5.0" device before the note, but it was rather half baked (and priced to match)
If Samsung made the note only 5.0" with as thin a bezel as they did, it would only be marginally larger then a 4.65/4.7" device. it's only very marginally larger then the S5 afterall.

I fully intend to get the Samsung Note when my two year contract is up with the Dell Streak 5 in October... it will be time then and the price way down for the Samsung.
Most def agreed as well, it was a music device I believe competition for Apples Ipod.. I also like the fact that Samsung let the world know about their product..depending on a dev is cool but a balance of the two will ensure the product meets it's full potential...

It was, the device I mentioned was the Galaxy Player 5.0, it's biggest issue was that it launched a generation behind the device it mirrors (it's essentially a SGS1 but launched around when the GNex came out).
Note was popularized by marketing, if dell was marketed much like note today, it wouldve been a success for Dell 2 years ago. Well, I wont let go my Streak, its still a head turner much like a Note does.
Sent from my Dell Streak using xda premium
The Note won't be around for any longer than the Streak and who's to say it's more successful? it's certainly being advertised a lot but isn't that the only reason it's more in the publics mind?
The Note is a better device of course but the 5" screen has had it's day (I think) it's not much bigger than most 4"plus phones around and more awkward to fit in a pocket. These days my Streak stays at home and I use a 10" tablet with a 3g router to connect to the net and read/play games. Phone calls and texts are handled by an HTC Desire.

Dream phone?

Ok people, many of us has dreamed of a phone sometime in our life, but because of lack of money or other reasons, we were not able to acquire this 'particular' device.
At this moment, I am sure that many people are still hoping to get the Galaxy Note but can't afford it. We are really lucky to be able to owe a Note/S2/S3 now but I am curious about which device you were drooling some years back and were not able to get?
As for my part, I was looking forward that the Samsung W880 12M Amoled gets released worldwide some years back but unfortunately Samsung only released it in KOREA - so the phone was not available for purchase for international users.

N97 was a dream device which had a lot of defects so then I got n97 mini which also had similar products but was jealous of the original. At one point was jealous of N900 when I owned the N97 mini. Was jealous of n95 when I owned n81. I was also jealous of the extremely bulky N73i a really long time ago. Every recently I do get jealous of phones with slide out keyboards. And I love my note but my heart belongs to slide out keyboard but I doubt such phones future with the number of touch screen phones. About 2 years ago, a normal phones is normal screen with keypad, and smart phones/expensive phones were touch screens only. My dream phone was always something like that:
- Biggest screen available
- AMOLED display
- Good open OS
- Decent battery life and good hardware
So until some other company releases Note-like device with better hardware or Samsung gives us Note 2 ( assuming it will be much better than Note 1, otherwise i might not upgrade because what for anyway ? My Note already does everything i want it to do, and quad-core cpu won't make me switch cause i frankly dont need it ) i guess Note is my dream phone.
I used to think about HTC Titan as of my dream phone - i love Windows Phone 7.5 but when i learned that Microsoft is not going to update existing devices, and even WP8 will remain as closed as WP7 - i simply gave up on it.
My dream phone evolved with technology:
1) First it was owning the Slide out phone from The Matrix (except with Titanium)
They did it with the Nokia 8800
2)Then it was a Nokia phone with colour screen and a Camera
The did it with the Nokia 6610
3)Then it was about a Nokia phone with 1+ Megapixel camera and larger colour screen. And possibly a different layout like:
6800, NGage, N90.
4)Then I owned the HTC XDA II. I realized the potential of a larger screen, which meant more than 2inches... 3.5inches was HUMOUNGOUS. And realized with better processor and WM 2003 software, there were more possibilities which meant Music + Videos + Camera + Primitice-Internet for Google/Emails and best of all GBA Emulator!
5)By this point the PSP debuted and I couldn't afford it and lusted over it. Yet I had the iPaq h2210. My dream phone would be a h2210/Xda II with Gaming controls!!!
Then pda's evolved. I wanted the iPaq rw6815 with Gaming controls. Or a QWERTY keyboard. I was becoming proficient with xda-developers.com and Windows Mobile 5.
The N95 got released and it was meant to be revolutionary. To me it was a big downgrade from the rw6815 (which I couldn't afford).
6)Then the mother of all modern smartphones arrived.
It was the first from this company and it was revolutionary, it was the HTC TyTn II.
I lusted over it for so so long. This became my dream phone.
Then I had another dream phone, a T9 style pda-phone with GPS. And this became a reality with the Mitac Mio A702 !!!!!
7)Just when I saved up enough money for the A702 (which got cheaper), my other devices were taken from me. I had to start from scratch. And then a new competitor came on the scene the HTC Touch PRO.
It was the tytan, but better in every department. So it was a worthy upgrade than a a702, and it was going to get xda support.
Meanwhile, Apple released the iPhone. I didn't know about it back then. And it was such a downgrade to a HTC TP. By this time, Windows Mobile 6+ was showing its age.
Where was my dream phone, a HTC Touch PRO with a Gamepad !!
8)By the time the iPhone came to Australia, it was the 3G model. I picked it up and was wowed, because they solved many problems from the first version and the novelty of a capacitive screen and large fonts were great.
And I also got to see the HTC Dream, aka Google G1 phone. It was a piece of sht.
The Touch PRO was better, while the TP2 came out and it was a downgrade in my eyes.
At this point I got separated, my choices were:
-iPhone 3G
-HTC Touch PRO (running xdandroid)
-HTC HD2 (swan song)
-Motorola DEXT (slightly better G1 device) -> great keyboard, emulators ahoy
9)This is where smartphones leaped ahead. A new generation. These were the competition in my mind:
-iPhone 3GS (if you sold your kidney
-HTC HD2 (if you sold the other kidney)
-HTC Touch PRO, bargain (running xdandroid 2.1)
-DEXT, bargain (upgrade to CM5!)
-Motorola Milestone (GameGripper!!!)
-Nexus One (Quake 3 decimator!!!)
-A new flagship Nokia phone?
Found out the locked bootloader in the Milestone the hardway. Couldn't get the Nexus One (shoulda). Grabbed the N900... best decision!
10)By now my dream device was this:
- Maemo software
- Android games
- N97 form-factor
- Gamepad
- Bleeding edge specs (wvga, omap 3430, etc etc)
11)Nokia shot my hopes down. Samsung came out guns blazin. The undisputed best phone was the EPIC 4G. It was cdma. I got the regular i9000 through contract, it was okay, but my N900 was superior software!
12)I had many concepts and hopes of MeeGo devices.
13)More daydreaming about my Tilt-gamepad smartphone with smarter software and ARM technology.
14)Gave up on MeeGo, and N900 began collecting dust. The Desire Z was a horrible choice, not a EPIC 4G contender at all. The Motorola Atrix just debuted, and I would've bought it had it not had the locked bootloader.
I bought an iPhone 4. I saw the direction Apple was going in. After a month I sold it, kept the money. I used the money to buy iPad2 which was shipped to my lil' bro.
I persevered enough that the NOTE came out. I was one of the first buyers.
Away the SGS and the Desire Z went.
The Galaxy Nexus came out, fortunately it was, is an inferior device. I will be holding on to it for a while.
Now, my "dream phone" would be a controller like the Datel TurboFire2 which has a dock. And you dock your phone onto it. Take the controller if you like, or leave it home.
The phone itself is a NOTE-2:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26920096&postcount=74
(if I could add to it, no MHL, separate microUSB-OTG and microHDMI ports)
