Heyy,
Im a huggeee android fan n was looking forward to getting an android tablet next month...before buyin i wanted to ask some questions regarding the tablet.
1. Will it get honeycomb update? Is the hardware powerful or outdated to the dual core chips?
2. How is the video calling on it? Which software can i use for Video chatting on PC and tablet?
3. Is there any other alternative tablet better than this? Is it gonna be outdated in a few months due to the hardware??
4. Can I put custom Roms in it? Or its not possible?
Thanksss

Then I'd say wait it out.
If you're a huge Android fan you'd already have a Tab!
My advise is, if you can wait, wait. Personally, i've been waiting a long time for a decent Android tablet - I even bought a cheap chinese iRobot, and had a Huawei S7 on preorder (cancelled when the shipping date kept slipping).
So far, the Tab has exceeded my expectations for an Android tablet, given that the OS is supposedly "not optimized" for tablets, which is a phrase that many reviews have used, but few (if any) have actually demonstrated due to incredibly lazy journalism.

Dave

I'd like to strangle that Google exec that said that. He's done more harm to both Google and the manufacturers than he can realize.

Indeed! Just look at the comments in most of the reviews, and this invariably crops up time and time again from people who haven't even tried the Tab!
When an iPad displays an iPhone app in a "window", it's a feature of the OS that allows the tablet to take advantage of the iPhone ecosystem, yet when the Tab does the same for Android apps it's because the OS is "not optimized" for tablets.
Got to love those reviews that say that Android doesn't support the Tab's native resolution, when in actuality it supports any resolution and a well-coded app can take advantage of it. All because it's not an "official" Market resolution, which Google could "fix" by just saying that it is so!
Regards,
Dave

Couldn't have said it any better!
I've been a long time WM fan, but just got a Tab about an hour ago! cant wait to try it out properly! i used a demo at carphone warehouse and it is the ideal android device, its very quick! im new to the android world so i dont know much. but i highly recommend it!
Thanks for the help guys....i know the OS its not optimized for the device but will it support gingerbread and honeycomb or the processor is too weak for that?
Also will it support custom roms like cyanogen?
Well ive been a Windows fan for some years but ive had my galaxy tab for over a week now and i cant put it down, im really happy with it

1. Will it get honeycomb update? Is the hardware powerful or outdated to the dual core chips?
The 1ghz Hummingbird and PowerVR 540GX GPU is the most powerful single core SOC on the market right now, and it's arguably competive or superior to the Tegra 2 in graphics performance as well. It can handle 2.3 just fine, and should be good for 2.4 or whatever version number Honeycomb gets as well. Nobody can answer if Samsung will support it, but the community should have all the tools to do so as well.
2. How is the video calling on it? Which software can i use for Video chatting on PC and tablet?
Video calling is ok to good, same as any mobile device, but with BIGGER FACES. Qik, Tango, Fring and Skype are your current choices for software. All work best on WiFi, obviously
3. Is there any other alternative tablet better than this? Is it gonna be outdated in a few months due to the hardware??
There's no REAL alternative at the moment. There's a lot of lesser alternatives (no phone, no GPS, lower quality materials, lower resolution, etc), but nothing better in this form factor. In the mobile electronics world, there's always something better coming.
4. Can I put custom Roms in it? Or its not possible?
In time, you can, because Samsung didn't lock the bootloader and they've released the source code for all the shipping variants. Just keepin mind that no Android device has custom ROM support right out of the gate, not even the vaunted Nexus One. It takes time, multiplied by sales. I should also mention that the Tab has sold nearly as many units as the Nexus One, if the reports are accurate.

THANKS!!! couldnt have asked for a better answer
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 OR Wait for Tegra Three devices?
I would also allow for you to suggest other devices but please only android and please only 10 inch tablets.
Also the new tegra three devices might not be as thin or good-looking as the samsung which i really care about.
The only reason i like tegra is because of the support it has in the android app developing community so please try to keep the suggestions to tegra devices unless you have a good reason to contradict it.
This is simple for me.
If you can wait, wait.
If not go for it.
I couldn't wait
If you can wait, it means you will NEVER buy a device lol. When Tegra 3 devices come out, Tegra 4 will be announced. I passed on the galaxy tab to wait for a tegra 2 device and now I hear nvidias "Kal-El" quad core. **** it! I'm going for the Gtab!
lol might as well buy the Samsung now and then sell it once the new one you like comes out. But its true, do you really want to keep waiting? Not I, I'm jumping on June 8th.
Personally I would get one now. You can play the waiting game and never get one as there is always a better one around the corner. You can of course wait but I suspect that you won’t see many better or 4 core tablets announced until CES 2012 next year.

No, if you can wait, it means.... you can wait! I don't know about the rest of you, but I've lived my life just fine without a table. It will be a cool toy to have, but I don't NEED one. Tech gadgets are always progressing, but the tablet market is currently moving at a very fast pace. Tegra 3 is supposed to be out later this year, and is supposed to be 5x the performance. That's a much more significant performance/time ratio than other more "mature" tech products. If you can wait, then there's certainly something to be said for jumping on when the curve flattens out a little. What I do will depend a lot on pricing.
i think it's worth waiting... tegra3 pre production chips allready shipped to manyfacturers, mass production starts around august. motorola and probably asus will be releasing products short after ( promising releases before back-to-school time )
this means that you can, in theory, own a quad core beast in within 3 to 4 months months...
and they are realy fast, throw your pc and your mediaplayers out of the window and start using your tablet instead
perhaps you can invest in a program like best buy's buy back program, so when something new comes out, you can trade in your old and get the new for cheap

If you pay attention to the market it doesn't look that way. I personally think we wont see anything better then whats out now until next year. Most of these company's still need to make money off the products that are currently on the market.
Take Samsung for example, think of the time and money that has been spent building and promoting their new tablets around the world. I really don't see them coming out with any new tablets at the end of the year even if they had the new teleology. they first need to make a profit.

Asus, Motorola, and Amazon (and probably others) are all rumored to have Tegra 3 tablets by the end of the year. You can't make much money off of the products you currently have on the market if they are obsoleted by new products your competitors are offering.
I'm going to revise my initial answer.
If you're asking the question "Should I wait?". You should wait.
After the iPad released last year, I started trying to imagine, what exactly I would use a tablet for. Once I was a bit settled on what I wanted to do with it, I started looking for something that would match my needs.
When the 10.1v was announced I realised it was a match and I eagerly went after it.
Maybe you should wait until you are certain that the tablet you are buying is a match for your requirements.

lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I run the 10.1v and love it.
Things it is:
-light
-sexy (please no 3.5mm jokes)
-brilliant batery (i charge it each night but it only gets down to 30-50% after full day of use)
-netbook replacment (people will argue this but i haven't found a netbook more fun then this, and you can put debian on it )
-casual gaming (not sure of anything on the market you cannotplay onit except porley designed games that are just tiny boxs)
Things it isn't:
-high def cinema (you can run standard def fine and it looks great but if you are obsesd with 720P wait)
-ipad (yer thats a pritty good reason )
-high end device (tegra 2 is fun and all but nexus s still out performes all tegra 2 devices so if you want the bigest and best wait for qualcomm)
In conclusion if you want a great device that doesn't need to be compared to a PC (which i hate that thats were we uave goten in tablets) then go pick one up, but if your after a device that you want to luanch thermal nucular war with wait for qualcomm.

I was really looking forward to GT10.1 but no luck.
It has Tegra 2 inside which is no good for me and has no sd slot which is also no good for me.
I do want a tablet like this but I do have a purpose in getting one - it has to replace my netbook.
Meaning I want to watch 720p mkv without re encoding, netflix, etc...
So far non of the tablets (including iPad2) can do what I want.
If I would be to take one now just to have it Asus Transformer seems like a better choice.
There is an sd slot on it, there is a great dock with batt. for it and looks like it will be/is cheaper.

As far as i know, the Xoom plays 720p mkv with Moboplayer just fine. I haven't tested this myself but i have read about it in Xoom forum.
If you want, i can test this for you, just point me to a video to test.
And 3G GT10.1 has a sdcard slot.

Unfortunately no.
http://blogs.forbes.com/elizabethwoyke/2011/07/29/asus-preparing-second-transformer-tablet/
At first, I was a little mad at this, my Transformer just arrived in the mail today and the first website I went to on my new TF was engadget.com and I saw this headline.
Then, I realized that I probably won't even need a quad core tablet for another couple of years considering that there are only a handful of apps that take advantage of Tegra 2.
Yeah I went into the tablet game knowing full well it would be outdated very quickly. I judged my opinion on my purchase solely based on the streamline performance I saw from the models already available at the time, the xoom, and decided it was going to be enough power for me for a while. But deep down inside it does get to you when you see something newer come out a quarter later!
I also heard today that the price of the Asus Transformer is going to drop on the middle of this month, but they didn't give a price. A reaction to Acer Iconia dropping to $398.
I think that the new screens on the next generation of tablets will be really expensive since they will be 2048x1500 or there abouts.
Don

more silly performances...
There is this assumption that there really isnt any point of quad cores as Apps arent optimised for them yet.
However, honeycomb itself was designed with multicore processors in mind. Single threaded apps can take advantage of multicore processors by running the app on one core, and other OS services on the other cores.
Even the most basic of tasks can benefit like browsing and gaming. The OS itself can benefit from quad core.

They are just playing the same game as Apple, updating their product on a yearly refresh cycle.
I won't be updating from Transformer to Transformer 2. I'm very happy with my purchase, and nothing will change that. A few years down the road I may repurchase.
I only hope that Asus don't withhold Android ICS from Transformer to give the Transformer 2 a market advantage (it already has one in it's hardware spec).
I have spent the last 2 weeks trying to decide what android tablet to purchase. I have narrowed my decision between the TF and the GT10.1. I was gonna make my purchase in a week or so, but now, I dont know?! Maybe I should buy one at BB and get the buy back program for it. Damn....

I don't buy this october release date. it makes no sense to put out a new device so early when TF1 sales are rising not falling away. surely asus would want to max out sales of their existing product before launching a successor.

Greets
I could easily see them selling both the TF and the TF 2 at the same time, just at a lower pricepoint for the TF and a higher price point for the TF 2. It might be that by the time the TF 2 comes out, component costs will have dropped on the TF and they could price it at, say, $349/$449 retail, and then the TF 2 at $449/$549.
That's just idle speculation, of course, but it makes sense to me, particularly if the specs on the TF 2 are crazy good, which I expect them to be.

Why? Wouldn't you prefer it if your browser typing had less lag, and the app your were running was not effected by other tasks such as feed updates, etc. More cores impacts both the base OS and apps.
Your Android device WILL BE outdated in 3 months, maximum 6 months no matter what you buy.
I am happy as long as I get the Ice Cream Sandwich running smoothly later this year.

This is the same thing ppl said when the tegra2 was announced. The fact is that honeycomb itself is not mature yet.
I agree with the post above saying quad core is useless. It is useless for the time being cause, while the hw techs is advancing at great speed, the software is still lagging behind. why have a quad core when clearly we do not have many tablet applications? i am not talking about the recent api changes in 3.2 so that apps can be stretched... i am talking about special apps made for tablet only. why improve the hw when there is still way to improve in the sw?
browser typing is clearly a bug in the codes. we do not need to get 4 cores to get rid of it. browser typing lag is something we shouldnt be experiencing even in a single core. quad cores coming out in october is quite outrageous especially for us ( living in europe) . i for one, paid approx 450 euros 2 weeks ago for the TF only (without the dock).
Here is a prototype running Kal-El!

Edit: Benchmark -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VATNyBTPltI&feature=player_embedded#at=36
Having a prototype running proves absolutely NOTHING about when it'll come on mass market!
Ya you're absolutely jumping the gun on this one. That's not only old news but doesn't prove (or even claim) anything we don't already know.
I really don't think we'll see them until 2012. If we do see them earlier, great. I want Tegra 3 AND Android 4.0 though. So unless the late 2011 ones have Ice Cream Sandwich, I'll still hold off. I don't trust any manufacturer enough to let them promise me an ICS upgrade. Maybe Motorola since they're all buddy buddy with Google.

I'll probably be selling the A500's in Mexico once the Kal-El models come out. I'll be able to sell it for about what they sell for now in the US. I'll make money and it'll be cheaper than if they bought them new here. Win-Win.

I may go that route myself, Samsung generally makes good products. Quality near Sony's without the megalomaniacal "make our own standards" in every package. It really sucks the patent crap between Apple and these devices. how was the build quality of the first gen compared to samsung products?
I can say the TF3 will be out in June of 2012 too, but that doesn't mean it's going to happen. This is the beginning of media hype. The same thing happened with the original Transformer as well. How many months was it until we had a concrete date, much less hardware in hand? For god sakes, they were showing off hardware 3+ months before it hit stores! Having the CEO say they're preparing, is like me saying I'm preparing for Christmas now.
When we have a date, fine, post threads. But until we have a date, whats the point of having thread, after thread, after thread with every little stupid article about the TF2? It's all hype and nothing more.

It was sorta a crapshoot. In a way...I mean, as you probably are well aware, the people that got bad units (or are just too picky when it comes to backlight bleed) complained the loudest. When you consider the fact that they were selling 100k+ per month, having even 100 people complaining is still only 0.1%. Outside of that, I feel it's good. I have a B50 unit (not one of the even older B40 units) and it's build really solid, I can't complain unless I expect everything to be better than perfect.

If you can find a B60 or below tab I'd go for it. B70 series are hit and miss when it comes to being able to root. Even if you NEVER root it, it's good to have the option IMO.
Quad-core? Not necessary for functioning apps at present. The dual-core TF1 performs beautifully. "Less is More" axiom applies here I believe.
I'd jump to the quad-core ONLY if dual boot with Win8 were an option. Never been a gamer so playing games mean diddly to me. (Win8 option would help with work interface).
Its not going to be thinner? Different Color? More aesthetically pleasing w/ a new dock to match? Only hardware is the difference?
I am dissapoint. I was really hoping that they would have created a more badass version of the TF2. They might as well just called it the TF1S and saved the TF2 monicker for the real deal.
I honestly think Asus, like Lenovo, are going to be in the Tablet races a long time. However, I think the tablets running Android will be short lived. I want a fully featured, robust, heavily developed OS. Windows 8 is just that. If anyone is not excited about Windows 8 competing with Android, then they are not excited for any innovation.
The Transformer 2 will most likely run Windows 8.

Windows 8 should be able to run on Tegra 2 so we should have the dual boot capability on the TF1.

It won't. It will run IceCream Sandwhich. - If there is one thing I've learned it is to take all posts with a grain of salt. Usually it's peoples' personal opinions or prefrences instead of facts.

If it doesn't have digitizer stylus I'll pass. I need the tablet for taking hadwritten notes at work, Transformer 1 is not good for it.
multiple places are reporting that the CEO of Asus has stated that transformer 2 will be coming out shortly (meaning by the end of the month or early next month).

however, the price point says $499...hopefully they are referring to the 32GB model and not the 16GB model. I was really hoping to get this as soon as it came out but if 16GB is at $499..i might wait until closer towards the end of the year to hopefully get a better deal on it once samsung and others come out with their kal-el models.
