Samsung Focus Audio Quality Improvement - Focus General

as we should all know by now, through the diagnostics menu on a Samsung focus, one can manipulate and change the volumes of the phone, when the headphones are plugged in or not. The next thing i think we should work towards is tuning the frequencies at which audio is played back. Windows Phone 7 did not give us any equalizers but I think it might be possible to tweak the sound via this diagnostics menu regardless.
Here are the Sound Tuning effects with HEADPHONES attached;
Sound Tuning = 1 1C 74 4 23 9D 95 12
System Gain Attenuation = 5 145 0
Class Gain Attenuation = 5 0 36
Device Gain = 5 400 -1100
audience.cfg = Off
Has anyone tried messing around with the "Sound Tuning" settings to try and achieve more bass & treble? I will start manipulating some variables and record the outcomes on this thread. If anyone else is interested in doing so, please do so!

can this be used to make the phone louder when a headphone cable is attached?
my text to speech, navigation, and call volume is so much lower than the music volume, which makes it kind of a pain when i use my focus in the car with the aux in on my stereo.. :\

I found that apparently the NoDo update greatly improved the audio quality of my Rev. 1.3 Focus. I now consider it on par with the Infuse I had, which was quite excellent sounding. I use high-end IEMs and can confirm the SQ is excellent on the Focus.
Sadly, I can't get the Mango update. Though it was released on Sep. 27, 2011 for AT&T, which I am on, mine is left out in the cold. MS lied and didn't put out the update for all phones...probably a selected few people. So I can't say whether the SQ would improve from NoDo or degrade.

Sure you can get it, there is no physical reason why you can't, you just have to wait. You weren't left out in the cold at all, you merely have to wait. MS didn't lie, they said the updates were going out in batches. You need to grow up a bit and stop whining, you act like MS has singled you out to punish you. I remember you now from early this year in which you drove people crazy with your negativity. Back again are we.

wtfook
people, this was supposed to be thread about sound quality! I do agree that sound quality improved after NoDo, but i cannot confirm any noticeable difference with Mango.
Regardless, i really f'd up my Mango Focus when messing around with the Sound Tuning settings, and basically had to do a hard reset to return the phone's functionality. So if any of you brave souls are tinkering with the Sound Tuning Settings, just dont push the values to their maximums like i did, for some reason it has an adverse and negative impact on the operating system.
Therefore, as long as MS doesnt introduce a dedicated and good equalizer that doesnt cause distoration (cough Apple products cough cough), then i guess im just stuck with these plain stock settings.
As per the Sound Tuning settings, it seems like we can only change the device gain and class gain. I am not satisfied with this, but i am patient. If samsung really wants to beat every other smartphone in the market, they need to start taking audio quality more seriously (its good, but not great), espesically with SE's Xperia lineup and now the HTC Sensation XE backed by Beats by Dre technology (as subjective as that may sound, it actually does improve sound quality).

Voodoo sound kernel?

I've been reading rave reviews about Supercurio's Voodoo Sound and was interested in giving it a try but it requires a kernel update. Does anyone know if there is a kernel for the Fascinate that supports Voodoo Sound?

What does everyone use for settings in Voodoo Sound? I am also using my favorite app PowerAmp and I wanted to see if anyone else was using that combo and what equalizer/preamp/headphone amp settings other people were using.

EQ settings are going to depend largely on your headphones. I also use poweramp and for the moment have turned the EQ off so that i can get comfortable listening to the effect of the new sound driver. My normal listening headphones are a set of klipsch Image S4s which frankly for the money ($79) sound quite good, but are a little too strong in the midrange and roll off too quickly up top.
Typically with the poweramp EQ I've been cutting a little in the upper midrange and boosting a little up top to compensate for this, but after a few minutes listening to the new sound driver with the SNR boost and 128x oversampling enabled, i don't think i'm going to need as much boost on the top end.
I'll play with the EQ later after my ears adjust, but i'm really looking forward to Supercurio implementing the EQ in his app so that i can use it as a global EQ for all sources (especially since i listen through the same headphones all the time).
This Voodoo Sound kernel sounds excellent using PowerAmp and my equalizer settings. If you're interested in my equalizer setup, I've attached a picture. I'm using my Grado Sr60i headphones right now, I haven't tried out the new Voodoo sound kernal on my Koss Ksc75 headphones yet, however.

It should, but I don't know how noticeable it will be. It seems that most people say that it's a very noticeable difference, so you could test it and find out.

Funny enough I just bought these headphones today at best buy! I can't agree enough, for the money they are easily as good as my Shures that cost about 60 bucks more. When you find out what you think are good settings could you maybe PM to me? I need to get some flac files on here to set it up properly, but I just don't feel like getting rid of some of my music in order to make space for flac versions. TLDR PM me your settings please!
Is anyone else having issues with bluetooth audio out? Like, it's not audible at all...

Once I get comfortable with the new voodoo sound, i'll post up or pm you some settings.
I can tell you that the new kernel has me really questioning some of my source material. Everything without it was pretty muddy, which is why I had to cut around 2k iirc and boost the top end, but with voodoo most if my stuff sounds fantastic dead flat except for a few files which is causing me to to doubt the quality of the conversion.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
ya so far I am pretty amazed at having everything on flat, my voodoo amp at -8 db and then checking just the DAC 1.5 db gain. I'm not sure what exactly either of those check boxes does and it may be all in my head, (there always seems to be a constant battle between my head and ears) but maybe you could enlighten me as to what the benefits are of those 2 check boxes?
From supercurio
"oversampling improve the digital filtering quality of the signal before it's sent to the DAC, and makes the DAC runs at a higher rate.
It reduces the distortion and improve the SNR too a little bit, but mostly, it helps filter high frequencies people cannot hear but only feel and it acts on the listening fatigue."
Also from Supercurio
"Internally, the audio codec reserve some headroom for the signal, allowing to do some processing without reaching saturating levels.
The +1.5dB SNR boost disable this conservative settings using a non-documented trick and now a lot of people tested it: looks like it cause 0 issue!
It makes the sound +1.5dB louder without creating any noise. As consequence, the signal to noise ratio is also improved by +1.5dB.
It's all good"
Okay, with my earbuds, which are not the cheapest, but not super high dollar, I thought this sounded pretty good. Then tonight I plugged my phone into my car stereo (2008 Jeep with factory Infinity premium audio system). H...O...L...Y...C...O...W...! I thought my ears were going to burst into flames. I actually had to crank down the EQ settings in PowerAMP some, because the bass and treble were absolutely ridiculous. I think I've got it set to a pretty good level now, but it still thumps the subwoofer pretty good. And the clarity in general is unreal. I'm hearing things in my mp3s that I've never heard before because the levels were so muddy, even with PowerAMP's EQ. Anybody with decent speakers who has installed this sound fix knows exactly what I mean, and those that haven't most definitely should.
Meh, and to think I was considering $300+ on an aftermarket head unit to get more power, when all I needed to do was add a few lines of code to my phone. I think Samsung needs to fire all their programmers and start over, because they're insanely crippling their hardware with crap code. I think the Galaxy S phones really would be the Android equivalent of the iPhone right now, in terms of cult following, if people only knew how good the hardware really is. Sorry Motorola, but the Droid X has got absolutely nothin' on this phone in the hardware department. You can keep your few extra pixels.

Actually, it looks like supercurio pitched a plan to Samsung for them to use the community (and, of course, help it by releasing beta source, etc) to overhaul their phone software strategy. Good luck to him.
Wow, if he pulls that off, that would be awesome.

Tough choice

Hey,
I was planing on getting this phone due to how cheap it is and wanting to try wp7 out.
I read a lot of issues about the phone and kind of discouraged.
The big question I have is should I just wait and see what "if" any newer wp7 phones are coming to Tmobile or should I take the plunge.
Please be honest lol You'll be saving a life if this phone really is a hassel.
the problems with this phone are fixed via new firmware and mango (most likely)
if you waited this long you could wait for the next batch to come out (like the searay)
but if you want a keyboard - this is the phone to get. It is also mad cheap!
i picked one up even tho i already have a w7 phone and i plan to get the new nokia too. (but i'm crazy)
A lot of the problems are reportedly fixed by the new (.212) firmware, which is due out this week! There's a good write-up in the article below.
http://wmpoweruser.com/dell-venue-pro-users-new-fw-report/
My phone is very stable with wifi disabled i.e. no lockups or reboots in over 3 months. The wifi issue is apparently caused by a DMA conflict - the new firmware reportedly fixes this.
It's a very nice phone. I don't regret purchasing mine.
On the downside, the camera is relatively poor. It's also thicker than most phones as it has a (very good) hardware keyboard.
Your decision is whether to get an ageing phone (i.e. DVP) cheap or wait for the next generation devices. This is something you will have to decide for yourself
Great phone...
1. Terrible camera
2. Low (read very) heatset volume
Hence spoils your upload to Facebook fun and also the the zune experience...
I honestly don't recommend this phone
Using .212 .... very stable with wifi
Strange. For me, headset volume has been very good using ue-18 pros. Very powerful at 15/30. However, my DVP is running old firmware(.105) and crashes alot. Like the device, but am still waiting for an update.

As mentioned by aFo3262, the type of headset / earbuds you have can also make a big difference.
I listen to my DVP on the underground using cheap Creative EP-630 earbuds and have never had a problem with the volume being too low. Earbuds that fit inside your ear often give the best volume. They also reduce noise leakage, as long as you have the right size rubber pads, so people around you don't hear what you're listening to.
These are the earbuds I used to use with my iPod. The iPod is louder - however, the DVP goes loud enough that I always leave my iPod at home
Thought I'd mention as I'm not sure how much Dell can / will do to increase the output of the earphone jack.
You should not be using earphones playing music loudly to cover up other loud noises. You will destroy your ears. I am travelling in the UK and I have to agree with magicsquid, on my Skullcandy over-ear headphones the trains and underground seem dull compared to my headset volume of 17/30.
I work outside (very noisy equipment) all day every day and use these:

Highly recommend them.

nod nod to that.

volume is fine.. but i always keep it maxed. its max is lower than you'd expect. But i'm find with it
running 212 and mango beta 2.
I received mine from the eBay deal 2 days ago. It came with .212 firmware on it and I've had no issues. I put Mango on it today. Performance is good and I have no headphone issues - I'm listening at about 20 (out of 30).

My favourite DSP manager settings!

Hi, after many months and Power Amping I decided to stop PA and use UberMusic with DSP!
Now if you don't know what DSP manager is, well it is an application used to enhance music experience!
It has 5 options.
-Dynamic Range Compression
(Compresses loud sounds and amplifies quieter sounds for a "balance")
-Bass Boost
(Amplifies Bass sounds (bass guitar, "thumps" lower sounds))
-Equalizer
(Changes the sounds or levels of a song more on this later)
-Loudness Compensation
(Makes the track or sound louder leading to possible distortion)
-Virtual Room 3D effect
(Mimics a "3D" effect (think toy microphone))
Okay so you might be saying. "It depends on what people like" or "These settings are not optimal"
Well not exactly.
I have researched all functions and have become a noobie Audiophile.
These settings aren't my "this sounds good" setting. These are chosen according on how music and headphones work.
These settings work on almost all kinds of songs! Headphones don't matter either it will enhance the headphones!
Now for the settings.
For the first DYNAMIC RANGE COMPRESSION: You want to turn this completely off. And I'll explain why.
This makes the sounds leveled but amplifies or makes the track louder which leads to distortion at high levels. And one REALLY IMPORTANT REASON. Unless you have a 80's or 90's or lower song that is NOT mastered (updated) then this option is bad. All modern songs are already really compressed and most people agree.
Bass Boost:
Leave it at Slight or Medium.
some headphones have little bass and some have a lot.
Equalizer
You want to male them look like stair steps going from left to right.
Loudness compensation:
It is like Dynamic range compression but doesn't change sounds or levels them it just makes it louder...I use Voodoo Sound so its not needed but if you have an HTC or Motorola phone then set it to weak or strong to prevent distortion.
Headphone Virtual Room effect.
This option tries to make the song feel surround soundy, but it just doesn't work for most. It takes some sounds and covers them as all it does it just produce an echo effect so off.
Give feedback!
Everyone has different ears, different preferences and different headphones (not to mention different files) and there's no universal setting. All the options are there for a reason, everyone should IMHO pick what they like best.
My G2 has always had a really good bass response and really good equalization by default. Using these for only $10!!! (in silver/white color though), I get full noise cancellation while listening to music or using this fantastic app (really good for an airplane ride), fantastic bass response (better than my iPod) and other EQ greatness.
Our phones don't need any fancy audio settings

Most notes on the bass guitar are actually not bass frequencies at all, but actually low-mids. In most forms of popular music, the only thing that actually falls into bass range is the bass drum, and some synthesizer sounds.
Nice guide, If you can provide screenshots THAT'D BE GREAT!
Can you please post some snapshot of the equalizer settings?
Here are my settings. I think it might be too overkill for bass.

What about the speakers? Did you change the settings? Cuz, I don't like how they sound :S
You can guide people in the general direction of how to tweak the settings, but ultimately, it's their ears, not yours. But nice guide I guess.
Have you tried neutron MP3 player?
It's pretty dope sawce.
Perfect for audiophiles.
Just some tips:
Never boost with EQ. It almost always has a worse effect on the sound (clipping/distortion) than cutting the other frequencies would. However, cutting volume in the digital domain reduces the bitrate, so it'll probably have a negative impact, too. Better not do that either.
Loudness boost/bass boost are just a form of EQ, so they'll add distortion, however minor, to the track. Better avoid them.
Crosstalk can cause problems once the audio is in the analog components of your device; you should get a circuit diagram, and isolate the extraneous circuits (cellular radio, gps, graphics chip, etc) by disabling them. Take the time to replace all the resistors and capacitors in the audio path at this time.
At this stage your audio should be pretty reasonable, so the next lowest-hanging fruit is room treatments. Collect blankets, mats, pillows, egg cartons, whatever is easiest to get, and attach them to all surfaces in your listening room. You need about 6" thick padding, at least. Don't even think about listening in other rooms, or when you're out and about, you'll only ruin your experience.
The penultimate preperation is to prepare yourself. To avoid soundwave refraction, wear sweats and a hoodie, and two pair of socks (one for your hands). Cue up some suitable well-mastered recording ( I recommend the '93 Decca disc of Cage's 4'33" ), swallow your general anaesthetic (don't want your noisy lungs and heart messing with the sound) and enjoy!

I don't consider myself an audiophile by any means, but I know what I like when listening to music. Boosting and cutting EQ sounds just fine to me, and 99.9% of the masses will never hear any clipping (and don't own the audio equipment for it to matter), unless you really boost to the max. Same thing with cutting the freqs. And cutting/boosting to my liking always sounds vastly better to me, than a flat EQ profile.
And I can only assume your comments about replacing capacitors and putting up padding, are a joke.

It was just a joke about obsessive audiophiles. That said, clipping/distortion usually won't be noticeable, but it can still give you a headache/fatigue after a couple hours of listening. That said, I don't think anybody should ever presume to tell anyone else that they can only enjoy music a certain way, so keep on doing what's working for you

Heh, I kinda figured as much. But the first bit of your post was perfectly believable, so I wasn't sure if the whole thing was a joke or not. Maybe your sense of humor is like my wife's. I can't tell when she is kidding half the time, either!
Audiophiles, to me are a bit of a joke, similar to most self-proclaimed "experts" concerning things that are really a matter of personal taste. One person on here mentioned a German study, where so-called "audiophiles" could not discern a low bitrate MP3 recording from a CD and other less lossy formats. I've also heard of a study where supposed wine "experts" couldn't tell cheap $10/bottle wine from an expensive vintage, when tested double blind.
Similar to what you mention, enjoy things as you like, and no need to go overboard.

Let me level with you...beats is nothing more than htc's take on marketing. It's a mere equalizer tweak and a horrid one, if I may add. DSPManager or Volume+ will be better in any case.

Geez, you guys make it sound like freaking brain surgery, and its really very simple. As with just about any EQ controls, the sliders on the left are lower frequencies (bass), the right are higher (treble). Just tweak them until they sound pleasing to you. Listen to a few various types of music you like (fast/slow songs, heavy/soft ones) to find an EQ profile that works in most situations (as most of us will probably not bother changing setting just every time you change music types).
The other options on DSP are just on/off toggles. Try both on and off, and see what sounds better to you. If you don't have a preference, leave it off.
Its disappointing that so many people like being TOLD what sounds good. Instead of adjusting it to fit YOUR taste, which is the whole purpose behind the customizability of DSP. Asking someone to give you an EQ curve that's best, is like asking someone else to tell you what color is your favorite.

As for me, there's no real tutorial about the equalizer like what you've just described (thanks for explaining what everything does, btw), and I don't know much about audio levels so I don't tinker with it. But I want to take advantage of the features on my ROM, and a simple "Here's how I did it, try it and see how you like it" thread like this is very helpful to myself and others in situations like mine.
No reason to think it's bad for someone to post their settings in case others want to use them. It's a positive contribution to the community, don't be disappointed. Of course it's not rocket science, but it isn't exactly elaborated well like you just posted either.

Very poor performance on stereo bluetooth (A2DP)

This is now the 3rd LG phone in a row to completely suck on bluetooth audio quality, my G Pro did, and the Optimus before it also. I have the AT&T version, using bluetooth headphones its not as much of an issue. In cars or on a louder higher quality audio system is where it really shows up. Ive used two diff samsung phone and an iphone 5 that sounded perfect. Even using the wired line in to the car, the volume nearly has to be maxed to have the same level as a iphone on meduim.
I want to like this phone but music is something i do all the time in the car. I had high hopes with LG saying they were putting all this high quality audio in it, but it still sounds like **** compared to other phones.
Does anyone have some code to fix this?, im sure this is something the phone will need rooted to install and im open to doing that. I have two G2s and both have the same issue, the company phone obviously I wont root, but the personal phone I just want to improve it to at least what other older smartphones were able to do

Mine sounds perfect on my system n my GTO, what's code gonna do?
but have you ever run other devices prior to the G2 in it?
Mine sounds fine compared to the S4 in my BMW. ONLY Difference is Maybe alittle less bass response on the G2. Not much tho

I have not seen any mention of aptX on G2. Without it, it won't compete with new Samsungs.

Beats, DSP Manager, etc.
There are a bunch of audio enhancements that have been ported to different devices, through third party development.

I'm also having issues. Not only is the volume really low, it also plays slow so everything sounds like a 12" records on the wrong speed. Iphone from before worked fine.

This may not be updated, but usually they are pretty good at tooting their horn before things are released.

Is AptX software feature and not hard wired into QSD 800? I don't know, I'm just asking

It is a proprietary standard for CD quality bluetooth.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AptX
I am also having issues w/ bluetooth in my car. I can get it connected, but it doesn't seem to want to stay connected. Mid song, the car stereo will all of a sudden drop the connection and switch to a different input ("normal" behavior when the source is disconnected. Acts the same way if you disconnect ipod from USB cable). I had an iphone 4s & Lumia 920 that did not act this way prior to my G2. Anyone try to OTA update to see if it improved things?

What year and model is your BMW and what system do you have in it? I agree with the origional post saying the quality is noticable crappy with my BMWs sound system (2013 X1 with HK and idrive). My Note II sounded perfect but my G2 sounds terrible. Especially if I crank it. I would really appreciate it if anyone had a solution because if not this otherwise great phone will have to go back
I'm a bit of an audiophile so being able to have my FLAC files is nice. I realize that Bluetooth obviously isn't streaming raw PCM, but having good quality source material can help. That and it just makes me feel better knowing.
I just wish I could navigate beyond the current playlist using the controls on the steering wheel. I have a "menu" button, but's greyed out. Same with the old GNex. I have a feeling the car is design specifically to work best with an iPhone.

Just got the lgg2 and the phone and streaming music via Bluetooth work fine in my car [2013 BMW]. However, when connected to the car via Bluetooth, neither the phones mic nor the car mic work for voice commands [like for dictating an email or text or google searches]. Probably a deal killer for me unless I can find a solution. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as otherwise I really like the phone.

2013 550 with HK and Idrive. Only difference I found is in bass response. G2 has less bass but was able to compensate for it in the EQ settings. What do you find worse?

The music is fuzzy or has a hiss or something. It just isn't clear and crisp like on my note ii or my friends iphones. It is most noticeable when the music get busy (bass treble and voice all at once). If I switch to the headphone jack it sounds great again but that defeats the purpose of the bluetooth and audio controls. Out of curiosity do you ever use slacker radio? I am having issues where I can't skip tracks using the car controls like i could on the note ii.
Does anyone know if we can fix this? Modify the bluetooth bitrate or add an additional profile? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I can't get this fixed in the 14 day return period I will have to find a different phone. I would be happy to pay someone to make a fix. Thanks!

I always play music in my car and I had the GNex. My G2 sounds way better and is louder, I use bluetooth with the (aptx?) spec receiver.
I noticed that when I first used bluetooth for music playback, it sounded fantastic. After using it for a little bit, the sound degraded and it now sounds, well, poor. So... I'm guessing I'm just going to have to go buy an aux cable.

oneplus 2 speaker weak...

the single speaker has a very low volume level. can anyone suggest a solution? (i read the other thread).
phone is difficult to hear in noisy environments. forget playing music on the speaker. it's just a very whimpy monaural speaker.
i have tried 4 apps to boost volume, and only SpeakerBoost made much difference, but the app warns not to exceed a certain volume which is the point you start to gain some volume.
can i actually do physical improvements to the phone, like converting it to stereo w/2 speakers? where could the parts be bought? i'm in USA.
i am not rooted. would there be a solid solution if i rooted? or did 1 + just skimp on the speaker?
the equalizer that was included w/the 1+2 initially is long gone, but it really was not helpful for any significant volume boost.
I am disappointed in the 1+2 (and the retail price has plummeted like a rock), and their poor customer service.
unfortunately, hardware mods is a far fetched idea as there is already very less space, and fitting a whole speaker is, almost impossible. also the power and audio routing is not feasible.
your best bet, IMO is to look into software mods, specially rooted ones. look up the forums, you might find some. check user opinions and you may find one useful enough.
this is what i use. .works quite well:

Out of the blue 1+ contacted me about a reception issue...
that was not resolved months ago. i would really appreciate any feedback on the following:
I took the opportunity in my response to 1+ to mention the speaker issue. anyway, after owning the 1+2 for months, i believe that the speaker and reception problems are design flaws; that 1+ simply skimped on some portions of the phone and hyped it as a flagship killer.
can anyone offer any input on a way to get significantly more volume out of the phone speaker without damaging it?
a top end tech at att wireless explained to me that someone in my building who has a cheap flip phone likely has better reception than my 1+2. this was the highest i could go up the att tech ladder. Further, i see this as a design flaw, because other immediate neighbors using the same carrier do not have the significant reception issues i experience.
anyway, i sent the phone on about an 8000 mile RT repair trip to some 3rd party repair shop that handles 1+ repairs for 1+. absolutely nothing was done about the reception issue.
Now, a 1+ representative wants me to again send the phone back to repair. they just ignore that i say these issues are design flaws.
when i heard a neighbor using their old samsung phone (speakers) like a stereo, i realized the 1+2 speaker is much worse than i realized.
i asked 1+2 for a refund or an upgrade; they turned me down.
