Sadly, yes.
The "bad" eMMC issue is very overreacted upon. Especially while the phone is under warranty.

Wait, if the phone breaks cuz' of the eMMC chip, while still rooted, it's covered under warranty? Btw, I have the monthly warranty from T-mo too.

ok so here's the whole history of how my phone died:
i was running cyanogenmod 7 and all was well, but i absolutely LOVE HTC sense. it just makes sense you know? so i downloaded evil's desire Z port of HTC sense, flashed it, but the phone didn't boot. not sure why. then i flashed the desire HD version also from evil, and the ROM finally booted into sense 2.0, all was well.. but not for long. about 2 or 3 days later the phone started lagging really bad. at one point it just completely froze and i had to do a battery pull. i was fed up! i found a sense 2.0 ROM made by faux and flashed that. all was well, but once again, not for long. after about a week the phone started lagging again, and one night, it just froze and i did a battery pull, and ever since it's been stuck on the splash screen. i booted into clockworkmod recovery and it gave me some errors about not being able to mount /cache partition. someone on XDA told me to flash the PD151IMG.zip file, so i did. and ended up with Fail-PUs. after that i guessed i was truly bricked. it happened around march or so, only a month after i got this phone, and back then, no one knew what was causing these "sudden deaths". but everyone pretty much knew that the phone was screwed, there was no way to fix it, so i called tmobile and told them my issue, and they sent me a replacement (with the good chip woot woot!)
so basically to sum it all up, symptoms of fail eMMC include:
-lag
-clockworkmod recovery shows errors about mounting
-bootloader gives Fail-PU when trying to flash PD151IMG.zip.

Thanks once again! You've helped me out sooo much. Once I root, I'm probably just gonna stick with Virtuos Unity, it just sounds like my ideal ROM, and it seems like the more roms you flash, the higher the chance of eMMC failure.

This is the first time this phone has acted up. I am running RG 2.1 with the kernel that was packaged with it. I was running Ck's newest kernel. I reflashed the phone that's why I'm running the packaged one. I am also using the newest radio and have been since it was released. The md5 matched. I have the bad emmc also. Could that be the problem? My signal just came back, so I jumped on here to see if anyone had any ideas why it's acting up. By the way RG is slick and fast as hell.

no problem. just hope nothing goes south since you have a known bad eMMC chip.
I flashed the stock radio and I am still having the problem. When the signal goes out and I search for a network it comes up with an error. Right now I have full signal. This is driving me nuts. One minute its good next its nonexistent.

Yeah I Agree, why worry about a 2.1 sense ROM when we have a 3.0 ROM that is probably better than anything HTC would give us anyway

Info on oc daemon can be found here
I recently "unrooted" my MyTouch 4G because I found out I had the bad emmc chip and didn't want to "brick" the phone before I got my replacement from T-Mobile. Since I've unrooted the phone, I've noticed that the battery life isn't nearly as good as when I had it rooted running Royal Ginger 2.1 (was running it since the 2nd day I had the phone, the battery life was pretty good on Royal Ginger).
Previously I had a Nexus One (unrooted) running Gingerbread and the battery life was very good. I'm hoping the new mytouch I receive from T-Mobile has the good chip. What ROMs are the closest to the standard android OS (i.e. like the Nexus One/S)? Also, is there a chance that the bad emmc chip correlates with battery life?
Cyanogenmod 7 and Faux's Nexus AOSP Gingerbread ROMs are good.
Stock Android on the MT4G front what I heard has better battery than sense ROMs.

lol yep, sense is a battery whore. sure it has some great widgets and looks good, but at the cost of battery life. if you want AOSP, try out Faux AOSP rom. its just pure awesomeness! also the kernels have a lot to do with battery life as well, as they have many tweaks to get great battery compared to the stock kernel

Okay. Thanks for the information. So faux's soap is basically stock gingerbread (like it's on the nexus s/one)? If so, I would imagine it is fairly light and very good on the battery.

read this thread for some insight on the good/bad chip.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081243
so far, there is nothing you can do about the fail-pu error or cache errors caused by the bad eMMC chip. T-mobile will charge you a price to replace the phone because its still bootable. Im not encouraging this, but you must brick your phone to get a replacement....
now back on topic

I think the auto fill took over and put soap instead of aosp. Lol. I actually put the faux rom on my replacement device (which has the bad screen and chip). T-Mobile is sending another replacement because I told them about the bad screen on the new replacement they sent. This rom makes this mytouch 4g feel just like my nexus one but with a lot more space. Thanks for the info. Hopefully I don't brick this device before I get the new one. I did sign up for the extended warranty, which the guy told me covers any T-Mobile phone you use (whether you bought it or got it from someone else). The only requirements for getting a warranty exchange are no water or physical damage. That was part of the reason I took the chance on rooting this one.

awesome! just remember when reverting back to stock using the stock PD15IMG.zip, you must be on the stock radio. flash the stock radio before anything else, then you should be good to go with reverting back to stock to send it in
